the other comment made is all TH350's are not a like- the newer cores are light duty

Is the same true of the 700r4/ 4L60?

yes and no-

again- need to talk to Jim- he knows all.

i believe the big thing with the 700r4's is you want a case that has "K" molded into the bell as i recall.  different versions of 4L's use 4 and 5 star planitaries.

Matts TH400 actually has 4l80 parts swapped in with the extra 5th planatary or something-

there are all kinds of tricks and parts to tweak and swap- i think this was just a bad luck case of something stupid failed that was over looked and not caught from bad core parts in the rush of the time needed.

Probably. Have a cheap 700r4 to try as well now. If I make it easy to swap I'll try that as is while this one gets repaired, then go through the 700 and probably use the 350 as the spare. I expect to like the 4 speed a lot better.

Torque convertor thoughts too... Probably keep current for spare, and get a 2200-2400 stall for primary use?

If you plan on racing and placing well you will need better than a cheap 700r4  http://www.ckperformance.com/resources/700R4TRANSMISSIONS.html

You are fast when the car stays together, you can place well in races if you can keep things from blowing up. The th350 has been proven to be no good in there, the 700r4 is not a stronger trans in stock forms.

How much does it cost to go race, and break lap 1? The math says buy good parts

My saying for racing is  "it costs too much" hahahahah

I have a built TH400 that I built for my Sonoma SFA project that I likely will abandon. It still have 0 miles other than dyno tested at my college when I was in my community college majored in automotive service, built ~3 years ago. Not guaranteed but was dynoed good. My instructor, who owns and run an auto trans shop (builds lot of tranny for high HP vehicles, mostly drag cars) and teach at nighttime at the college. He said the tranny I built will holds 800 hp max (IDK how true to this but plenty nonetheless).

IMO TH400 or 4L80 is way to go if you want it to last, especially for the money.

let me know if you're interested in this and I'll sell it to you at a good price.

Anyhow, if you need some help to get it fixed like get the tranny pulled, or so, I'll like to help as I currently have nothing but time.

you now have the best trans cooling of any of the cars i have built, i think a built 350 will be the way to stay, its unfortunate this bad luck.

I think the much better 1-2 gearing and an OD is worth the 700r4/4L60. This was clearly bad luck but with doing floor changes and such anyway I'm not planning to limit myself.

Good round of cleaning tonight. Only Jetta parts under the Jetta hood for the first time in 7 months. I'd like to drive that out of the garage this week and see how well the car fits. No tape measure yet pulled, I'm not sure the spare tire carrier will let it fit. May have to put that back up on top.  Then I'll REALLY be needing a swaybar.

Hope to have a 700r4 bolted in and cockpit refitted by the end of the weekend, get the 350 back to Jim as soon as I'm done with the floor.

Not sure which I'll race on. Unknown quality used tranny, or 8 hours use failure tranny :)

biggest hack will be front firewall changes.  the center dash and floor tins are easy.

its only metal.

They make more every day. I don't have much in stock though. I'll probably be making a run Monday. Not sure I'll know what I need by Friday, doubt it.
