Another ford ps pump bites the dust. Leak source unidentifiable without removal. Assume between plastic and housing. Tighten the hose clamp didn’t help

Battery is either low on water or has a weak cell too. Saw a boil bubble out the cap charging at 14.0. Sits at 12.6 but didn’t want to crank. Terminals have been shit every time I look and that hydrogen bubble is definitely why. Cleaned.

It’ll do another lap then sit all winter and I’ll read this later.

Power steering pump is leaking probably between pump and can
Driver axle seal is leaking
That battery thing
Radiator
If you don’t put antifreeze in it, it’s done. Been on tapwater most of the summer.

Quickeners don’t like catching a trackside tire, I don’t think.

PS pump was kilt in heat one. Pulley vacated. Did a lap or three without any PS and just couldn’t quite hang onto it in the hairpin once. Thought I could skip the tire but I hooked it instead, swung the truck right around the RF tire.

Reverse torque overload failure of the sun and planet both. Wasn’t enough to even hurt my hands, but without power assist the shock was more than would have come though with power assist working. Those teeth are awfully small.

that's not a sun and planet. it's a ring and pinion.

I ordered a replacement which _is_ a planetary setup. Supposed to be stronger and should be better than 3x if it's 3 planets (since they also support each other). I didn't look to see if Howe quoted torque rating, or torque load to failure.

How much faster you need steering to be? I read that stock Ranger have 4 turns lock to lock.

What about swapping in a different steering box, like from a Crown Victoria for the faster ratio at 3 turns lock to lock.

somewhere in the other 26 pages are some further info on steering. I think the manual box is 4 turns and the power box is 3 turns. I tried to run a manual box with the quickener after seeing the power steering issues so many others had early in these trucks, too much physical effort. So I put the power back in and I've loved it. It's still relatively high effort but it's exactly what's needed for a tail happy 4x2 in party mode. Now that I've had the same pump failure that everyone else does, I may try to gear pump it along with the big car just for consistent spares. Either that or I'm raising the driver side of the engine an inch to keep accessory brackets off the steering gear and trying to fit a TC pump in there. Anything to get rid of the troublesome plastic rear housing-to-pump case setup.

TC pump about 1/4 installed.

I’m short on long 5/16 bolts.
Going to make a back plate for the pump and brace to one mounting bolt of the bracket.
Need to make a clamp to mount a resi, and that resi needs a pressure relief, and a drain port out the bottom to pump suction.

Need to mount and plumb. May need a line or 2, might be covered with what’s laying about. I think stock belt will work, centerline didn’t move much and i think stock Jeep pulley is same size. Should clear all I hope. Not sure I have a belt, lost on track last run when the Ford pump failed.

Jeep TC pump now.

Should try to seal up the bad parts of the radiator before I park it, that should have it at 100% (ignoring bed sides)

That plate didn't fit the cap under the engine cage. Going to secure resi to the intake manifold instead.

power steering pressure hose might be fun. I think the fitting types listed on RockAuto aren't fully defined. So I've got Ranger PS box and Jeep PS pump.

Ford hose is .3125 inverted flare at the box to 16mm 'swivel o-ring'

Jeep hose is 16 & 18mm o-ring. I don't have a hose around.

I do happen to have a (garfed thread) Malibu hose. which is listed as 16 & 18mm o-ring.

And doesn't fit the Jeep PS box. I think the thread pitch is different.

I can clamp on to the factory Ford return to make that long enough to go into the resi, no problem. I probably need to get a conversion line or fitting for the pressure side but need to finger out the right fitting for the Jeep TC box.

hopefully got the right junk on the way. this improvement has ended up costing more in plumbing and fittings than I could have imagined. I think more than a new in box pump and new ford spec lines would have. hilarious.
