Debating on semi trailing arm rear susp or keep it simple stupid traditional four link.
-
Fabricate trailing arms so they dont bend.
Going IFS? :D
-
Found these:
http://www.rc4x4.org/rcforum/index.php?topic=18410
Picking them up this weekend for $600 when I visit Alicia at Pitt.
-
Did some research on the axles I picked up today and the 14b has the factory Detroit locker in it (its basically a lunch box locker). They must have come out of a CUCV. Anyone know anything about the locker that came in the rear and if it's worth it to keep in there?
These are def not "open diffs" as described on the Rausch forum thread.
-
Rear 14b carrier has spring inside the window (no spider gears). Debating whether to keep the Detroit or find spider gears to put in and weld.
-
Front d60 looks like a trac-loc (clutch packs on either side of the spiders) and apparently are rare. Gonna have to research whether the gears can still be welded or not. I would assume they can. May want to re-sell these axles and start over as they look to be worth a fair amount of money.
-
14b Detroit s good, but probably not what you want for racing/thrashing. They don't ride on cross pins like a Dana lunchbox locker and are pretty strong. 14b spiders should be able to be found on pirate cheap.
D60 track lock can be welded I think. I have a 35 spline open carrier if you want to swap it out.
Cucv axles go for 1K-1500 on PBB. Hard to get more when the whole trucks go for 2k
-
:withstupid:
-
ya good find.
i have an extra set of spiders and cross pin for a 14
-
Could sell the Detroit for $$$ :)
-
Steel, Ruff Stuff, Profender, and Solid orders going in this month. Eek!
-
i ordered 380 feet of tube yesterday
-
Awesome! I put a sweet ruff stuff order together last night. May try to get 15% off for vday and an extra 15% through Ryan.
-
1.25 heims, bushings for mounts, steering heims, rear disk brackets, pinion gaurd rear,

1.25 heims, bushings for mounts, steering heims, rear disk brackets, pinion gaurd rear,
Got all that was still deciding what to do on steering. They have a sweet steel light mount for dust/brake lights for like $110. Lights are cheap too!
-
Don't forget seat mount tabs harness tabs motor mount tabs panel mount tabs and soo on
-
Put in a BIG order to Ruff Stuff last night. Slowly but surely acquiring parts for this beast.
Decided to make this thing HD w/ all 1.25" heims and square links/trailing arms.
Coilovers and bumps from Profender are next on the list!
-
360 feet of tube put on the rack this morning!
ready to do work son!

Whole album of pictures of the bomber 3 on pirate.
-
I think this thing is going to be dubbed the "Budget Bomber"
-
*drool*
-
Racing on a budget is impossible.
-
I just meant this car will be built and raced on a "dude who's fresh out of college with loans" budget and it definitely won't cost $90k like the USED Bomber 2 car. However, schrong parts will still be used throughout. Lol
-
You will be at $90k before you know it, hahahah Maybe not but $20k easy.
You guys bending tube tonight?
-
Haha my goal is to just build a stout car for a good price, have a ton of fun both building/designing it and racing it, learn a lot, and make new friends. Can't really ask for anything more than that.
-
Smike said he's gonna be in the shop don't know what for. I'll be working on my axles, engine, trans, and such.
-
ya we will start tonight.
i have to stop at verizon. Need to sit infront of a laptop and draw / figure some stuff.
Every buggy i have built has a "one Pager" that defines all.
-
Matt, when can I use the schnozz of your truck to build some stuff? (tow bar brackets)

Main frame rails tacked last night.
-
Looking at trans adapters and it seems you can buy the hub adapter:
http://m.summitracing.com/parts/hup-hp3795
Or the same hub adapter with flex plate:
http://m.summitracing.com/parts/add-712500a
Smike weren't you saying you wished you did the flex plate as well or something? Looks like $100 more for flex plate option.
-
i cant find the PN, but i bought the adaptor that requires longer bolts. it was about 80$ total.
If i ever do another one, id go with the full flexplate. I never had input seal issues till this motor. you have to drill out new holes on the existing plate to make it fit. Small change i screwed that up enough to make a seal angry. Not worth the hassel of chance to not do the flex plate next time.

tonights progress

Nice
:D

hard part done!

-
only two tubes tonight! weak matt!

Why does it look so narrow?
-
must just be the angle- its 52" wide at the hip pretty standard 45" roof too.
we spec;d it pretty dam close the B3 car

Had a bear of a time getting the lower rear tube to fit right but she's in 1/4" territory and will be ground to fit perfect at a later date. Added top cross bar and lower crossbar.

less than half the price of Jackson, and they are out of stock anyway, one week out.
:)
-
Speaking of eBay also just made an offer on these and they accepted for $119 shipped!
Look at this on eBay:
Chevy GM LS1 LS2 LS3 LS6 LS7 LS9 SS Block Hugger Black Coated Headers Street
http://bit.ly/ZQhNKa
-
why not use stock manifolds?
-
they are heavy and in no way point to a use full place. stock LS Truck manfolds are actually pretty good in flow design, but they tend to point right where you want your feet.
-
Checked out this hog last night, it is looking great. It kinda looks like Tiltons car.

How the shocks will be mounted, he has 14"s to, so yours should be about right.
I dont know how he got his motor where it is, looks hard to work on.

half the price would be because you have to spin them in the drill press with an air grinder to take off a few thou so they fit and function in the 380 head
LOL

whats up with upsidown pics matt? is that an iphone thing? my droid refuses to look at a picture or take one upsidown. sometimes its annoying haha 1% of the time.

Otherwise chassis is looking awesome.
A little diegrinding inside those headers for better flow and she will be front row.
Git her done

Got my axleshafts this weekend. Yukon 4340 blems and Yukon superjoints.
Mike and I got one Superjoint installed, it was a PITA. Ruined an O ring and snap ring (Need to call Yukon to get more). Not the best design IMO with small chinsy o ring on the ID of the cap that has quite a tight tolerance on the spider and rips quite easily. Also spider body is too large to remove caps without destroying for rebuild. Hopefully these last a good amount of time.
-
(http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/04/08/a4ygapag.jpg)
-
RCVs FTW!!!
-
biggest POS and worst design ever. look awesome and beefy though when assembled. i HOPE none of the orings are cut, no way to dissasemble joints with out welding or crushing caps with vice to pull them out once the cross is bottomed out and the cilp is crushed as much as you can. no needles to bend it to give the cross more lenght. no way to put a spacer in.
hope they last
-
It might be worth looking to see if they sell an assembled set. That was an option with my chromollys they were just out of stock and 40$ more so I gladly installed the joints myself. But for stuff that spendy and apparently frustrating and exact might be worth a few extra dollars.
-
you can't pull the clips, then drive the caps off with a small bolt through the zerk fitting against the cross? thats how the CTMs I had were supposed to be disassembled. easy.
-
clips are full circlip and are destroyed if you bend or cut them to remove.
the cross hits the yoke..... before the cap is half pushed out
-
Remove zerk
Thread in 3/16" or 1/4" whatever right size bolt that's 1 1/2" long, full thread
Expand full circle clip w c clip pliers and work out of cap groove without fucking it up. Or fuck it up to remove it and replace it on reassembly
Remove cap from cross by threading bolt into hole, bottoming against cross and using the hardened cap threads to draw the cap out.
No pressing, no bottoming.
-
my spicers with full circle clips are tits!
-
i doubt a bolt that small will do anything, but i had not thought of that.
these caps take about a dozen full arm swings with medium sledge to get them to go in. Both mine and matts shoulders hurt and that was two guys (some what intelligent) fudding with one shaft for and hour. they dont seem to care about getting beat on. it took us 5 times of watching the video on how to even get the C clips inside the yoke with the cross in before you get the caps in.
-

Oh.
Damn.
Maybe not so much with the CTM method, then.
-
Tcase mounted! Smike is a boss at bending 3/8" plate with a sledge.
Sent an email to Yukon about extra o-rings and snap rings, no reply yet. They are doing it wrong. Phone goes straight to voicemail. Bah!
-
no mercy on 3/8" plate with the big sledge.
-
Bolted up the t case to the subframe and trans/engine mocked up to where it will live. Mike made sweet motor mounts in the amount of time it took me to set the engine/trans in position and hook it up to the t case! Lol

Hugger headers clear the motor mounts very nicely.
Added a 1350 input yoke off of the scrapped GMC too.
Engine and trans set.
-
i was thinking about our trans yoke issue. i think we should leave out the bolt, and weld the bolt hole on the yoke shut. keep fluid in and let the seal do its job. for a fixed yoke the spline was like 4.5" long and i think that's plenty for this.
both our TH400's are fixed yokes, being solid divorced, 1/4" of play might keep things happier. 571 has a slip yoke TH350
-
Found this: has dims we can compare.

shannon runs 20 or so of these kidney shapped ballons. there is a patent number on them we were going to check out. they have a basket ball type inflation thing. They are amount 3/32" thick hard rubber.
they must stuff about 15 in fully inflatedbefore they mount the wheel, and then stuff in like 5 more flat, but inflate them inside the tire to fill everything up. they probably have about 20psi in them. slime is used for lube to squish them in.
Apparently Bill Bared has a special monster press he uses to mount and dismount with them inside.
tire blows, shannon doesnt even know
-
so like a runflat system.
cool insider info!
-
i have herd the term tire balls, but i thought there was like 7 or 8 balls like basket ball size stuffed in, not 20 of them 3 layers thick lol
-
I had no idea they were air filled
-
I've got a sneaky suspicion those are just the ATV tire balls used in layers...in the ATV promotions they're single layer and ordered according to size to fit the tires.
They don't show any available on the website for trucks though. Hence my suspicion.
-
honestly, walmart kick balls look about right material and inflation lol Matt threw the number out 800$ a tire to do this- hench why shannon wanted them sent back
-
that'd make sense
-
looks like youtube videos of shannons stuff installed.
also looks like lots of places selling similar "things" but very little specs, 24$ per ball it looks like?
-
o nice,
walmart balls and pool knoodles were my two ideas, looks like others have tried!
http://www.polarisriders.com/104-outlaw-how/32996-walmart-balls-another-poor-mans-tire-balls.html
-
Packing peanuts FTW!
-
Yeah totally ready to stuff my tires with something lol, does not need to be Bill Baird's tire balls either. His are basketball sized and $800 per tire!
-
i looked at walmart yesterday- they have volley ball size ones, but i dont think they would take the load or pressure needed.
-
Ordered trans cooler, oil/ps fluid cooler, and radiator from speedway last night.
-
Cleaned the axles off and smike made a truss for the 60. Band saw is down for the count though so only 1 truss last night.

-
I see heims on both ends and no anti-roll apparatus, is that bolt dead on centerline?
-
It's below the centerlibe
-
Curious to know the reason for the bend in the LCAs. Longer shock length?
-
Shock mount needs to be lower on the arm when mounting up where it is. Trophy truck tip#1
-
Does that keep the arm from trying to roll over?
-
On compression yes. But when below centerline it'll tend to roll on rebound.
-
I would almost dissagree with that statement.... But a lot going on there.... Wonder if the damping really over comes gravity and spring force. And I guess limit straps are a must for tire lifting slow crawling.
-
both ends linked and 4 bumps mounted.
some heavy tacs and this guy will be ready to sit on tires.
Run last hood line, mount some coils, and she will be a ride height roller.
-
she is looking very sweet.

I'm digging it. Needs some seats to make vroom vroom noises from.

Thanks gif!!!
-
What is an acceptable range of continuous amp rating and voltage compatibility?
-
Does it say in the rules if a switch is needed? Push button seems weird.
-
Yeah I'd rather a switch.
Also might be buying 35" Maxxis Razr SCR's on from the Balducci's for line mountain :)

2 of these showed up at my house today.

Thinking of ditching the trailing arms in the rear and mounting rear shocks to the axle. Keep it simple stupid!

Custom torque converter ordered from Figspeed, 2300-2700 stall 600 HP max, built in adapter for old school TH400 to Gen 3 V8. We'll see how it does.
-
Along with a built TH400 I think you'll do very well with that.
I read something recently that Ried has started making SFI cases for the TH400. I don't think I've heard of any U4 cars actually scattering a trans or TC but it might be an option to think about if you have the budget for it.

They're a sticky. They'd probably last tens of miles on pavement at highway speed before being bald. Maybe hundreds. Maybe.

Good potential issue that got brought up in my pirate thread. Seems to have happened on a bunch Of rigs with fans blowing on fuel cells. Cell ends up acting as a heat sink and in turn boils fuel under vacuum at fuel pump inlet. Cavitation ruins pumps after awhile.

-
couple issues noted last night
we had the coils sitting on the dual rates- i was dumb and didnt notice that. Front needs 150s swapped from current 100s uppers, a wee soft but should be fine for a trip
front 60 yoke is about the same clearance as 571 to the engine sub ::)
the 3 / 5 gages that work are not hooked up-
no tins but floors and fire walls 95% done
no tins roof or hood
wires and hoses tidy'd up
Do list:
Link nuts, adjust front pinion angle / placement / front brake line ties near coils
Fix hydro hose ties
Fire wall piece behind petals
seats need to be bolted in, harness tabs need to be welded in
shocks / bumps need to be air'd up
should at least have water temp and hook oil idiot light up
mount winch

This thing did awesome at Rausch! Every line I tried in the comp course was scaled with ease. Got some new aluminum Liquid Iron Industries mirrors from Tim that held up nice in the woods. Both sides of Trail 5 hill climb were attempted. Walked up the left denied on the right. Broke a front shock shaft from the coils rubbing on the high steer arms. Knew this coming in but wow didn't think the shaft would break from the springs rubbing on the high steer arm. Big thanks to Mike Snyder at Down and Dirty Offroad for letting me use his shop and time to put another shock shaft in. Next stop is the Twisted Toys 4x4 Club Christmas Toy Drive at Wayne's World in Corning, NY next weekend. Lots of rock bounce style hill climbs and such always a great time.

do they have idiot light capability? I like digital for accuracy, but needles can be easier to glance at. I wouldn't mind digital if I could make a turns-yellow and a turns-red set point; I know some do that. It looks like there's an outer sweep on these (judging by RPM gauge) though and that's pretty nice.

Took this thing out on the RTI ramp at the Finger Lakes 4x4 club picnic. Next stop is Johnson Valley OHV for more testing and trail riding during KOH week.
Added Lifetime LED headlights and 80W CREE bars.
Bump pads made in the rear.
Limit straps ordered from Trail Gear.
Needs panels and spare tire mounted.
Might build an anti link twist bar on the rear lower links if I have time and the 5/8" rod ends come in from Ruff Stuff in time.
No swaybar really makes the car twist in the rear when you punch the gas. Need that as well!

I always meant to run a bunch of those parts off on the Torchmate for easy weld together DIY Kits.
Anyone interested in buying if we did?
-
I'd take one tube mount.
-
i'll take 2 that mount flat.
-
Ok cool.
I'll get something started.
The "tube mount design is just a 90 deg bend in some plate that uses hose clamps to attach to the cage and or the extinguisher.
But it can be substituted for a flat mounting plate instead.
Like this.
We can cut some parts and mix and match mounting designs.
-
I need the practice welding if you just want to cut the pieces. Seems like tube piece and extinguisher piece should have more material so that it doesn't rock back and forth. Maybe flare out a "T" of sorts top and bottom?
-
Agreed
-
i used a piece of 2" 120 wall that fits on 1.75 tube
i have 2 on 572 that Pete from Right coast cut out on his table to look at also.
i found it is 10$ for 4 clamps and a 3/8" pin at Lowes per setup

gages a nice but a big hassel for the $$ spent
gage vendor though summit sucks- terrible support. 2 gages DOA
2 weeks to send back, they claim no issues, but decided to change two of the lenses because they were worn (new in box gages)
temperature sending units are very fragile, not really for racing.

if we are taking them to Mike, probably Saturday when Matt goes to PA.

schematic shows how the return fluid goes into the reservoir after the cooler.
This allows any air to rise to the top. Air free fluid is pulled from the bottom of the reservoir into the pump.
reservoir should be the highest point of the system.

P185 pump is what we want
P185 was available in 97-99 chevy Medium Duty trucks with a 6.5 diesel.
most "P" series saganaw pumps will put out between 3 and 5 gpm depending on flow mod and pump shaft speed
keep in mind there are different stile P pumps there is the p132 and the p185
the 132 is the every day run of the mill p then the 185 has the larger ring and rotor (it pumps more oil) which is like the "1400 pump" from PSC
there is only one true way to tell the difference between a P132 and a P185 and that is to compare the ring and rotor (the P185 ring is .200" taller)
*** most re builders seem to use the lower flow pumps in applications that were factory high flow ***
top pic is 185 bottom is 132

Are you sure your orbital isn't something funny, and dead-heading the pump when not moving the wheel or something like that?
-
No that was the first orbital. Heard the pump cavitate loud when in hard lock left hairpin and that was it. Now no flow at idle.
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
-
What's your reservoir setup? I wouldn't expect one cavitation to kill it, but...
We don't really have any volume change with the double ended ram but something funny is obviously going on. I think if I were you I'd garbage pick a high pressure gauge and keep an eye on the supply side pressure to see what it's doing, might give a clue or confirmation?

identical setup to 571 plumbing and res, other than 25um filter added 1' from low pressure return to pump.

That was my initial setup when I first converted to full hydro.
Same as smike. Stock saginaw housing but I put a remote reservoir in the system.
Would constantly suck air from the stock housing cavity and burn out the pump.
After 2 bulls hit reman pumps to get me going again I broke down and called PSC.
Lance said never use the stock housing with the remote reservoir. It needs to be the full sealed housing with high pressure line and return below the top of the housing.
Also ended up having to place large hose clamp around entire housing with RTV to ensue no air leaks.
Been working great ever since.
I'm just trying to help.
I'm not trying to tell you what to do.
-
Since rebuilding my system they have introduced a new design reservoir. In and out at the bottom of the can...
-
I think all 3 cars have essentially the same can o ham + remote, and I think all are using the stock return line fitting on the can.
I don't think there's an orientation difference between 571 and 928. Not sure what 572 looks like off the top of my head.
-
But what about the filler neck?
-
I sure could go for a ham sandwich
-
Steering has been fine through backcountry 4 wheelers and RCROCS 2 beating..., trans ran under 250F all race with extra added cooler circuit, air filter mud guard worked great, next big issue to tackle is the high engine temps from mud getting in the cores and lack of cool fresh air induction.
Need to weld exhaust crack and re hang.

On my 6.0 I took a thermostat and cut the plunger thing out of it, just leaving the plate with the hole in it, It slows down the water in the block to allow it to pick up the heat but does not let it run too fast.
Thermostat is not really necessary on a buggy.
-
That was the other avenue I was going to take.
-
I need to get thermostatic control on my fans. I'm VERY happy with the way it cools without the stat.
I'm figuring low at 160, high at 185 ballpark. trans & steering cooler on full time and second trans cooler on at engine 160.

It turns out that plain old distilled water has the highest specific heat of all liquids commonly used for coolant. Water has a specific heat of 1 - meaning one pound of water can absorb 1 BTU for a temperature increase of 1° F.
A 50/50 Ethylene Glycol / water mix has a specific heat of 0.5, meaning it takes only 0.5 BTUs to raise the temperature of 1 pound Ethylene Glycol / water mix 1° F.
A 50/50 Propylene Glycol / water mix has a specific heat of only 0.3.
Therefore, it takes twice as much heat to raise a pound of water 1° F than a 50/50 Ethylene Glycol mix; and over three times as much heat to raise a pound of water 1° F than a 50/50 Propylene Glycol mix.
Ultimately, what this means is that straight water can carry away 50% more heat than 50/50 Ethylene Glycol mix and 70% more heat than 50/50 Propylene Glycol mix per degree per unit volume.
-
Karl Knack told me a couple races ago that switching to straight water cured 95% of his ills because of exactly that fact.
He stores his car in a heated garage.
I keep at least one gallon of antifreeze in my system (that's probably ~20%) to help with galvanic action, rust prevention, and because I don't store things above freezing.
-
I know I'll forget and it will freeze.
How low of a ratio is still freeze safe?
Depends on Temps I suppose.
-
That's easy.
Get a hydrometer and test it and get an actual accurate number for like $5.
Or here's a chart. Looks like we should probably aim for ~35% in our climate with low temps almost never hitting the 0 to -10 range.
I was wondering about heat transfer with water wetter after what gif posted. Not a huge difference according to this

I think smike usd the term Snake Oil.
We used to buy the stuff by the case for the Race Bikes.
No Glycol allowed on the Track!
-
I think I'm following this but let's make sure I'm not a complete moron…
I'm looking at 1 to two week with "near freezing" temps (might get to 32 over night). In the summer it is nearly always 90+ with lows in the upper 70s. In my case I could run straight water (with some type of additive to help prevent rust) from Feb to Dec. In Jan I would want to add a quart or so of AF to avoid frozen coolant. The upside to this is more efficient engine cooling system. The down side would be remembering to add the AF and flushing the coolant every spring.
Right?
Is there any real advantage to the engine life/efficiency? Seems to me that this would be "better" for the environment as there would be less chemical dripping from my various cooling systems. Granted the coolant drips are much smaller than the various forms of petroleum drips…

are you having cooling issues? many other factors involved...
-
Issues? No. Jeep temp just slightly higher here. Drip rate the same. But if I don't have to put glycol in then I'd rather not (nasty stuff).
Now the ford ('11 focus) is definitely running hotter. Still under trouble temp (last odb2 was 224 after longish drive). That likely just need a coolant change as its looking darker than normal (but definitely not oil contaminated).
-
Jeep is dripping?
-
Always has. Pinion seals. Valve cover. Oil pan. Radiator drain valve. Overflow can.
Oh and the shower that comes out of the power steering reservoir.
-
That's not good sir.
-
Long list!
-
The Toyota used to leak all that but it will stop if you hang in there and wait it out!
-
Back to my buggy..., ;p lol
Gonna run a 160 thermostat since I wheel in the winter. Will be interesting to see how yours does mike mike with just the restricter plate.

does the PCM look at the coolant temp when fuel mapping on these engines?
I know with my TBI engine coolant temp plays a big part on the fuel mapping.

They're probably the only way to go when you want to take on 10-20 gallons at a remote pit though. Can you imagine trying to put 3-4 5 gallon gans in quickly? I'd rather heave-ho an 11 twice. Best with a drylock fitting so you can't overflow, but that's a lil too bling for us, I think.
-
We have the ranger for remote pit gas transport. May be able to rig up a tower in the back for fuel dump? Probably not enough time to fab.

we are talking for KOH no KY

It feels strange not having to work on the buggy before a trip.

Sucks it's still stumbling.
Fitting broke on the remote? I have a spare from my bad shock that I'm not swapping onto my right front any time soon if the remotes and fittings are the same. or if it's a hose issue that's probably a straight up spare.

Thanks for the offer Mike but the Issue is that the shock is botched back together and has ATF just to keep shim pack lubed. Doesn't deserve a reservoir.

i drove on a flat no care for 4 miles at speed. wheel looks fine. one of the rocks i hit cracked the wheel in the middle between the beads. both beads have minor damage. much stronger wheel. could 20lb hits and weld up the little crack it probably would be fine.
-
KMC's way thicker than WE or Methods. i havent had a side by side monster yet. cant beat the price of the KMC's
-
Sounds like Artecs & KMCs is the way to go (width be damned :( )
-
KMC claims a 5.5" wheel back space is available. probably 6 Months or more to have them drilled.
i run the 4.5"
you would be 2.25" wider meh

6 months? Seriously?
I would expect deeper KMCs wouldn't clear Artecs any better than H2s

Not an o2 issue. Motor doesnt need o2 to run, 571 has raced and wrecked witg none
-
Vacuum leak, fuel pressure issue, coolant temp sensor issue, MAF.
Maybe if the O2 is bad AND lying about values? Unplug it.
-
Why would it run worse with different wires though? Ran perfect when I first put them on. Pulled out of garage and developed the same miss and got progressively worse
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
-
My 6.0 ran like crop because I had the o2 plug in backwards. It does not need them to run but does need proper info if they are hooked up. If you can hook up an obd2 port you could check it with the tech2
-
I really wish I had an OBD II port... That doesn't even make the current todo list though.
If it's that simple, you have a loose/bad wire or broke a plug or have a loose plug or loose top connector on a plug.
-
cause its not the wires?
-
I recently changed plugs and it was fine after. Lasted an RCROCS race and developed again at twisted toys. Been on and off ever since. Seems whenever I fiddle with plugs and wires it'll run ok and then go back to not running on all eight
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
-
I had the same issue, starting at the line at rcrocs 2. Ran fine before the race, was missing right off the line. found a broken plug and changed it after chasing vacuum leaks fruitlessly. all well after changing plugs until it did it right before line mountain 2. was a loose plug wire. Has been fine since.
YMMV
-
Coil?
-
i remember smike having a cracked spark plug.
are you running good plugs? i have seen crap plugs "leak" the spark to the block
have you ever pulled or replaced the plugs?
does pulling one wire at a time change the engine stumble...

Recently changed the plugs to Denso Platinum. Fixed problem for a race and then came back after rock bouncing. Maybe another is cracked. Have to check I guess. I needed new wires anyway.

Got on the Fox racing program. Will be ordering new bumps and shocks. Ideally doing bypass c/o combo all around. We need to hit the whoops hard if I make it into KOH and my backup plan is 4400 class in 2016 Mint 400. BITD is way more organized and legitimate than Ultra4 and Timmy is already planning on going back next year. And no rocks! 8)
No go on Maxxis race program, no surprise I'm still a noob.
Current action items for Badlands (whew):
New rear bumper that doesn't suck
Replace loose heims
Build spare driveshafts
New Optima Red Top (or something else, apparently they suck now?)
Bigger radiator style trans cooler
Move radiator behind our heads
Pumpers
Lower hood line, order shocks and bumps
Trail Ready wheels drilled deeper
T case shifters
OBD 2 check
Mount treps and buy three more spares (oof!)
3/4 ton brake conversion
Weight loss (firewall, floor, links)
New Skid plate HDPE
Brown Paint!!! Ha!
-
ignoring the optima debate (yes they suck now) why would you not go for a deep cycle or marine mixed cycle battery? a couple winching sessions with a dead motor that kill your battery flat dead will destroy a starting battery. Letting your car sit with a parasitic draw for a month or two to flat dead a few times will destroy a starting battery. a deep cycle is mean to go down to 10v over and over, and we generally don't need huge spike draws to start our engines.
I'm completly sold on deep cycle for wheeling and mixed use rigs. Just some food for thought.
-
only the yellow top is meant for winch and heavy draw use, the red is still considered a starting battery
-
Haha fail I built a custom battery box around the red top!

Non-optima may be different. Not sure if the excide spiral cell are exact match or not.

I use DieHard Platinum Marine Battery Group Size 31M. 1150 Cold cranking amps.
I had one in the Jtruck The dash winch switch shorted in the rain over night and engaged the winch to pull. The hook was on the Bumper D ring. It tried to pull until the winch motor over heated and melted. Truck started the next morning. That battery is 10 years old and still in service in my enclosed trailer.
I bought a new one for my buggy. They are unstoppable. But heavy as F#$K! 75 lbs i think.

Smikes yellow top was not the same ext dims, we checked when I built the box. This red top has never let me down since 08 in the YJ and the buggy. Timmy was running some trick batteries at the Mint, I will have to inquire.

Found out this past weekend I can hit 50 mph in low range still with 5.38s! Buggy ran awesome on shit water CA fuel, hoping that is the reason it crackles at full throttle. Covered 10 miles at WPH with no issues. Hoping we can put together a no stop no pit race!
Pumper system install, usual grease job, and bolt/fluid check are only things on my list for race on 5/2.
Debatable on making new 30" high rear bumper...
Mike mike do you know how to isolate driver to co driver radio chatter from car to car? Smike thinks it'd be funny for everyone to talk to eachother though for this race, I agree. I will have it recording on my go pro!

VOX gain needs to be turned up
-
Without a doubt your VOX isn't set right. Gain too low means you never break squelch to hear each other. Hook up a music input and it will be very obvious: the music volume ducks when squelch is broken.
It's a very fine line. Kim & I didn't listen to any tunes most of the time and just left open mics between us. I don't think two excited guys yelling a bit would ever have an issue if mics are well positioned and not facing backwards.

Yea ours works fine. PTT isn't transmitting Intercom it's transmitting to everyone.
I adjusted the vox as needed.
But with headsets vs helmet kits we opted for a lower setting.

yup, intercom volume is the other knob on the intercom, and incoming radio receive volume is the volume knob on the radio set.

the info we were working with last night.
need to check pin 58 is correct wire we were using.
need to verify reader works with plug in to jetta or Ram
Torque app was saying connected to reader, no errors in reader, but unable to connect to ECM.
We have gotten my reader to work on Matts car before, so not sure why we wasted 2 hours last night failing at it.

was another bad O2- we wired it for a code reader now so its easy to look at realtime info on my phone
also had massive exhaust leak pre O2 that wasnt helping. I believe ran fine at KY other than over heating and puking motor twice before we pulled co seat and cut out mud sheilding
-
Get that rad cleaned out fully, too. Looked really dirty in those pictures, mud pack doesn't help cooling....

hours were spent straightening radiator fins and making sure clean. no mud at KY, that wasnt the problem.
the radiators are just too small for 100% duty short course or all out sustained desert running with ambient near 90F
even my car was running 230 after 6 laps in KY. Full angry foot on floor 95% of course
-
10-4
very curious what mine would do. I expect similar to yours (230-240) since both seem to run relatively cool in the woods races.
-
id bet you be closer to matt- mine gets way better air than either of the low radiator cars. My car is rated for 20 more HP though.
-
Matt’s has heat trouble in woods racing though, doesn’t it?

Yes only race I stayed below 220 at badlands. Fast woods racing it gets up to 240 still.
-
I don't think I have seen 220 at LM. Only time I've seen the temp light is when my fan failed and I think I have that set at 230. I'm usually down around 210, I think.
It's the reason I haven't put a tstat back in. I don't want to screw up my cooling by remedying the tempermenant fix I made!

I'm not running a tstat either. Airflow isn't the issue either since a seat was pulled in KY and the car still overheated right after the main. Looking at more CBR stuff today.
-
did you put a flow restrictor in?
-
No, just hollowed out the existing tstat.
-
I bet you are moving the water too fast.
I made some parts from my 'stat into a restrictor plate.
-
moving too fast= complete BS
-
moving too fast= complete BS
yes. why does this myth continue to live on? :o
would you ever say that you are moving the AIR to fast?
A common misconception is that if coolant flows too quickly through the system, that it will not have time to cool properly. However the cooling system is a closed loop, so if you are keeping the coolant in the radiator longer to allow it to cool, you are also allowing it to stay in the engine longer, which increases coolant temperatures.
-
i have no idea why that myth lives on
-
engine puts BTU in the coolant, radiator takes the BTU out. the faster i can get the coolant around the loop the better, IF the radiator is sized properly for BTU removal in the first place.
When I was at GM i had a thermal test bench that we used to test the Fuel Cell coolant pumps. I had years of data that said "higher coolant flow = better cooling.

it was bad. worst so far. Details probably better over beers sometime.

things mostly OK?

Things are okay. Sacrificed a helmet, flannel shirt, outerwear, and a few melted zipties and wire casings.
-
a second night of "i cant believe what just happened"
We couldn't get it started in the trailer again, so it got drug out and pushed into the shop with the shovel.
couple hours later, found some melted wires grounding out the ecm causing no spark through the oil idiot light.
fired and locked again. pulled #8 and continued fuel poured out. determined stuck open injector electrically, then pulled and mechanically verified.
someone at work suggested changing the oil if a known fuel flooding situation occurred. pulled oil drain. watched 2 gallons+ of fuel spray out. holy shit
swapped in another injector, ran a few minutes with an oil change, drained and changed oil again.
Ran like a rapped ape again on 8 cyc, broke another 4130 stub at wrangler ave.
-
That thing has been on 7 for a long time. Kinda crazy that it just went to flooding status. Very lucky, up glad there wasn’t. More damage via fireball or cyl wall and bearing washing

took a while to relearn and a couple restarts to get that bank running. it must have been leaning the shit out of 2,4,6 to try and make up for 8 just dumping fuel. its had to have been like that for a while.

In dans defense - you had hiems on both ends? Below centerline + bushing should be better off.

below centerline = broken shock shafts when easy coast rock crawling. id give that link a weekend at RC before something around it fails. FUEL SYSTEM INFORMATION
1999-2003 4.8, 5.3, 6.0 all had a fuel rail with 3/8" supply line and a 5/16" return line. The fuel pressure regulator is on the fuel rail, and has a vacuum line to the intake manifold. In 2004, truck engines went to a single 3/8" supply line, with NO RETURN LINE (returnless) except 5.3L L59 Flex Fuel vehicles. For 2004, Flex fuel engines KEPT the return line, BUT used a fuel pressure regulator with a lower pressure ratting. 2005 5.3L L59 Flex Fuel engines switched to a single 3/8" supply with NO RETURN line in 2005. Non flex fuel engines, fuel pressure spec is 55 to 62 psi with vacuum line disconnected, fuel pump running. 5.3L Flex Fuel engine 2001-2004, 48-54 psi with vacuum line disconnected, fuel pump running. 2005+ with returnless fuel rail all shared same fuel pressure spec, 55-62 psi. There is no vacuum reference on these, so fuel pressure should remain constant under all operating conditions. The computer is programmed differently for fuel flow rate depending on type of fuel rail.[/b] This is important to know when having a PCM programmed. (exception: 04 express van and 04 trailblazer/envoy still used return style fuel rail, 05+ single line, retunless rail)

Matt found some severe rear axle truss cracking on the top right side upper link at axle. Further investigation mandated using the porta ban to remove and rebuild. the truss isnt trying to rip it self off the axle, but rather the top plate of the 1/4x2x3 box is trying to shear it self in to pieces from the push pull loads from the upper links. plug welded 3/8" plate top plate with brackets put back on with additional braces is the plan.
