Alright, after having it basically just sit in varying forms of disrepair, I'm finally going to start fixing up my 1974 CJ5. By no means will this be showing off the jeep and my work type thread, more a home for me to ask for help/recommendations.

Brief History:
  • 1974 Jeep CJ5; Dana 30/44; AMC 258; T18 Tranny; D20 T-case
  • Got it in 2012 from my Grandfather not long before he passed away, for this reason I have to keep it.
  • Mike has done all sorts of work to it over the years: Built a rear bumper, sliders, and skid plate. Tied the roll cage into the frame. Converted the front to disc brakes.
  • In late 2013 I took the tub off, rewired the whole darn thing and gave it a fresh coat of paint.
  • From 2013-present it's only moved maybe 100 miles most of that plowing my driveway.
  • Was parked pretty permanently after finding a frozen muddy mess in the transmission.

Task List:
In no particular order
  • Rebuild Transmission - leaks and was full of mud, also need to repair the reverse switch somehow... leads are busted off and I could never find a replacement part.
  • Rebuild Transfercase
  • Parking break lever/bracket needs to be replaced. The old pedal is long gone and a generic floor lever was installed by the previous owner, but the bracket is crap. May make a semi center console while I'm at it.
  • Needs a new battery, old AGM sat uncharged for too long...
  • Front bumper install with winch.
  • Front steering box was replaced in 2013 but leaks like a sieve now...
  • Front and Rear diffs need new seals all around... they also leak everywhere
  • Been debating installing some Aussies while I have the axles open
  • Leaf packs are pretty old and rusty, likely do a YJ leaf conversion
  • Engine smokes and runs pretty crappy... not sure where to go on that one.

Light/Moderate wheeling and cruising down to the bars/breweries nearby.

Still considering buying a wrecked TJ (plenty of them around here) and Frankenstein-ing them together.

TJ/CJ sounds like a LOT of work and will yield a rear driveshaft length of about 10"...

Would stretch the body to fit the frame, but again. Just a pipe dream I think.

Saturday the plan is to drop the tranny and t-case and get it torn apart.

Good starting point. Next would be springs to get it a reliable runner, smoke or not. That way you can enjoy the process, however slow you want to take it.

battery and trans sound most important, followed by steering and axle seals. check steering backlash adjustment. brace may help keep it alive or sealed as applicable.

pull that reverse switch if it's important to you, I'm sure it's relatively generic. measure threads and share photo...

How did you resurrect yours? thats what my current one is. Multimeter says 0v  :-[

connect in parallel with another battery and put it on 2 or 4 amps for a few days and see what it does.

I've never had a charger with AC capability but that's the next step

The AC is supposed to be able to break up the sulfation on the lead plates, which is what kills batteries.

if you have access to drain and refill, another thing to be done is drain the acid, fill with distilled water and hook to charger. Rinse it that way a few times and put fresh acid in. Not something I've done, but Heard About On The Internet! which you know means it's true.

Actually this was a good reminder that I own a variable DC power supply.

Following this page: http://batteryuniversity.com/learn/article/charging_with_a_power_supply. I've got it sitting at 14.4V CV, in the last 20mins its crept up from 0.00A to 0.08A, so perhaps there is some hope here.

Assuming I find no seriously big problems in the tranny & t-case I'm planning to purchase rebuild kits from Novak. They seem to get a good reputation, anyone ever deal with them?
