Title: Flyer's CJ
Post by: FallibleXJ on March 08, 2018, 12:32:29 PM
Alright, after having it basically just sit in varying forms of disrepair, I'm finally going to start fixing up my 1974 CJ5. By no means will this be showing off the jeep and my work type thread, more a home for me to ask for help/recommendations.

Brief History:

Task List:
In no particular order

And finally a picture of the heep when parked in 2013.

What is the goal? Ice cream runner? Mild wheeler? Tons and 40s?

Light/Moderate wheeling and cruising down to the bars/breweries nearby.

Still considering buying a wrecked TJ (plenty of them around here) and Frankenstein-ing them together.

Would stretch the body to fit the frame, but again. Just a pipe dream I think.

Saturday the plan is to drop the tranny and t-case and get it torn apart.

Good starting point. Next would be springs to get it a reliable runner, smoke or not. That way you can enjoy the process, however slow you want to take it.

battery and trans sound most important, followed by steering and axle seals. check steering backlash adjustment. brace may help keep it alive or sealed as applicable.

pull that reverse switch if it's important to you, I'm sure it's relatively generic. measure threads and share photo...

My Deka Intimidator AGM 34/78 has been resurrected from death 4-5 times now.  Good price point (esp from Arie 8) ).

connect in parallel with another battery and put it on 2 or 4 amps for a few days and see what it does.

I've never had a charger with AC capability but that's the next step
Title: Re: Flyer's CJ
Post by: mr.mindless on March 08, 2018, 03:53:33 PM
The AC is supposed to be able to break up the sulfation on the lead plates, which is what kills batteries.

if you have access to drain and refill, another thing to be done is drain the acid, fill with distilled water and hook to charger. Rinse it that way a few times and put fresh acid in. Not something I've done, but Heard About On The Internet! which you know means it's true.

Actually this was a good reminder that I own a variable DC power supply.

Following this page: http://batteryuniversity.com/learn/article/charging_with_a_power_supply. I've got it sitting at 14.4V CV, in the last 20mins its crept up from 0.00A to 0.08A, so perhaps there is some hope here.

Assuming I find no seriously big problems in the tranny & t-case I'm planning to purchase rebuild kits from Novak. They seem to get a good reputation, anyone ever deal with them?

Nothing goes wrong when you buy from Novak..
There kits are complete and they talk shop..
All kits and parts I have purchased from them have been top notch.. actually just ordered some Buick headers...

But be prepared to replace gears when rebuilding those trannys..  then call me because that’s where the part hunting starts...

Have to buy a new jack on my way home today, forgot I sold mine back in Rochester. Got me thinking if I should take out the tranny and t-case from the bottom or just remove it all with the engine. I know nothing about engine work but I did want to give the engine at least a good once over. Would mean buying a hoist and engine stand along with the jack, but thats not a huge deal.

thoughts?

Maybe a compression test before pulling the engine to determine if it needs head work or rings? Smoke could be a poorly tuned carb?

Carb is on my list to be replaced, its just the stock carter, always given me issues.

The last time I was off to go wheeling, winter of 2014 or something, I couldn't get it into gear. Turned out the entire thring was frozen solid with mud... So I want to tear them apart as I'm sure it hasn't been happy running with mud for lube

So, what I've thought was an oil leak is actually green fluid way back at the tranny. Didn't seem right
Title: Re: Flyer's CJ
Post by: mr.mindless on March 10, 2018, 02:06:06 PM
clean gear oil is kinda greenish. I don't think you have any of that though.

taste test
check coolant level
check temp probe
check freeze plugs

I figure I should drain the tranny and tcase before removing. Any need to drain engine oil? I've never removed this, I assume I just remove the bolts at the bell housing?

Side note, trail damage is worse under here than I recall. New oil pan needed... Mike's skid has held up well though.

Got it out, should have pulled the bell housing too, lots of rattling rusted parts in there...

Pretty heavy for a one man job. Noticed my exhaust header is cracked right where the pipes meet up so they're falling off, will need to source a new one if I keep the engine. Opened the inspection cover, didn't see any catastrophic issues, just muddy.

Engine suggestions?(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180311/bfb9d35fb0d0abc7e4578e5bf2b326d2.jpg)

I got the two split today, though I can't say I really knew what I was doing. There is a large aluminum adapter mating the two, is that "normal"? It also didn't feel right that the gears separated like that, I mentally figured it would have been mated with a spline, but again.. no idea wtf I'm doing :)

short CJ T18s are more hard to find and $$, common option is to get a Ford T18 and adapt it down.

cool!

Since I've gone this deep I figure I may as well replace the clutch. What all do I need? Haven't even gotten the bellhousing off so I'm not sure what to expect. Also considering remove the old clutch pedal linkage and replace it with a hydraulic setup. I noticed novak sells a slave cylinder kit, are there off the shelf parts that would do the same? Any help would be great

Called Novak this afternoon, awesome people to work with. Tranny and T-Case rebuild kits ordered :)

How do I replace the clutch and what parts do I need for everything that lives within the bellhousing? :) this is beyond my automotive knowledge.
