Harry (among others?) was right with the split shift boot being the gear oil  on the transmission cause. Replaced along with center console cleanup and a radio replacement.

Just talked to him about batteries yesterday, didn't realize it had been that quick of succession on the vp44s. hope there's a cause, but I thought hat was all airdog and whatever goodness already. no good!

Had a hiccup with this today. While I was unloading the camper, truck idling, it surged hard 2-3 times and stalled after the last one.

Dash was going berserk with WIF and check gauges and check engine flickering and engine temp needle flickering, and preheat light lit solid. Heard an underhood relay flapping as well.

I should have tried to pull codes before I key cycled to see if the computer was alive and responding but I didn’t. Pulled codes fine after key cycling (nothing notable), and it fired up and idled fine for another half hour.

Will be driven to work to pick up some oil Monday, it better behave…

68 key cycles on the new computer.

Sounds good. I should have put air in that tire today and looked it over while I was cleaning up but I didn’t. Maybe if I wake up early AF ( I never do. Still famously good at staying asleep :-/ )

Issues on the way to work today. One hiccup on the highway, on 64 in the village of Mendon, that gave me a dead pedal briefly. Long enough to hit the 4-ways but it recovered before I pulled over.

Then at an intersection red light while I was stopping, it shut down like I turned the key off. Able to immediately crank and re-fire, but it died about five times in a row after running for a second or so. Dash was doing the flicker dance again like when I was unloading the camper.

After having to take an unplanned side road due to dying in an intersection and pulling over at the corner, I’m dictating this while I drive down Jefferson Road and just about having palpitations at every red light.

P.S. - ran perfectly for another 20 minutes after this and got to work Just Fine®

to-dos, I suppose:
triple check all ground points and ground straps
pull back loose harness connectors from removed parts including cooling fan. there are 3-4 under the hood and at least as many down where the transfer case isn't.
other than the dash flicker, a failing CP3 could make sense.
no TIPM codes, but I'd imagine it could cause these symptoms.
Chase that fuel tank level sensor issue and verify it's not wiring fault. maybe drop the tank and throw pump & sending unit at it ($171+ship) if no wiring issues found. I need to run wires to the tail of the truck for camper plug voltage drop and backup camera anyway. Will be a great way to spend probably half a day, but further motivation to keep cleaning up the shop.

borrow a scanner again or see if I can find a PC program to do constant logging of PIDs and voltage and whatever else. I did confirm that there are NO new codes stored.

Couple instances on the way home of hearing and seeing ‘check gauges’ and some or all needles going to zero reading. First time it was batt and rpm to 0, then back quicker than I could scan the rest of the cluster. 15m later I got 3-5 in a row of check gauges with 0 rpm and mph.

Had a suggestion to check the firewall CAN connection, that smells right. I’ll have to see where that goes through.

I wonder if unplugging the cluster or overhead makes the truck die.

strong replacement contender
https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/778152868007833/

he's had it for a couple years and like 6000 miles, He'd put a stand-on skidsteer on the bed and tow a dump trailer doing firewood work. could get another set of HD aluminum ramps with it for pretty cheap too.

only issue it's had since he owned it was that it died on him once in the middle of an intersection... three trips in to whomever was working on it, about a year ago, and it was a harness fault above the transmission. something got squished there. No issues since.

might be a clue on mine?

I'm going out there to look at this as soon as I get the chance, and think I'm going to do it. if sarah and I ever want to do cross country stuff with the camper by ourselves, something with 100k instead of 500k on it seems appealing. and a camper and small trailer (or even medium trailer) is 100% in reach here. might make sense to pass along the goose, depending? we'll see. I just want a reliable truck again!

Could fit a small permanent crane and a spare tire ahead of the camper on the bed, and the camper will overhang by about its bumper and that's it. genny exhaust would need rework, it's the furthest forward thing.

Would the deleted items be an issue with NYS emissions/inspections?
