Picked up new plug, wire, coil, points, condenser, ignition, oil, and fuel everything.  Voltage regulator is still shiny under cover.  Solenoid is easy to test out.  That leaves a couple safety switches.  Wiring is super crusty and was all painted over at some point.  Might just replace it as I go, there’s not that much.

Pulled the battery out of the TDI to use temporarily, it’s at 10% after sitting for 3 weeks, meh.

We have a runner!  Solenoid was bad.

Took two cranks to break the motor and/or starter loose, but fired right up on third crank.  Reportedly has not run in at least 25 years.  Smokes real bad, but it got better after a couple trips around the yard.  Muffler continues to smoke after shutdown, probably a critter nest in there.  Belt is ready to blow any second so I shut her down for the day. 

Needs:
Belts
Battery
Muffler (see if old one will come off first)
Air filter
Re-wire
Throttle cable or its missing return spring?
Whatever fluid goes in the rear end?
Clean carb?
Tube or front tire
Steering is real sloppy

Throttle should be a push-pull and stays where it’s set.

Governor should keep engine at speed through load changes. Governor may need lube or have spring issues.

Steering slop should be easy to find. With lots of hours it is probably everything. Steering gear may have adjustable backlash, axle pivot and spindles are just wear. Tie rod ends usually need replacement, if wear sleeves aren’t worn through it probably needs brass sleeves and bolts replaced and hopefully not spindle or axle or pivot wear.

Doubt it crosses with Case or Wheel Horse axle or steering parts but if anything is severely worn I’ve got a few complete front axles.

I did not check if it was charging properly, I should do that.

If it starts and it’s wired right, excellent odds it’s charging. Same windings, after all

Likely.  The voltage regulator is the only item in the electrical system that I believe is original.

My starter/ generator? Almost without a doubt not charging.

A biggish battery will run a coil for a long time. Down to about 7.5v, it turns out.
