Making a habit of looking for air in the feed line before cranking. 2/2 minimal air and relatively easy start. Not helpful! Haha

Looks like I may have goofed on setting pump timing. Finally caught a hard start and there was NO air at all.

Vag-com says timing is too retarded to graph, so I’m way off. (I’m not sure how far off is too far off)

Time to pull some covers and zero some things, apparently. That’s a first. First head swap ever on anything, too, so ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Could absolutely explain poor economy if the pump isn’t able to advance as far as it should as well.

Fail on me!

My not so quick fix at lunch was a waste of time. Still out of bounds. Gotta reset from scratch, I’m out of adjustment for the tooth I’m on. That’ll be a nice few more wasted hours.

Gonna put some heat into it running for a thermostat first thing tomorrow, then set timing from scratch and then do the thermostat and hopefully swap front windows, then get a sticker.

Headlights and broken radio antenna swapped.

Timing reset from scratch and I went from too retarded to too advanced — so I really feel like a retard.

I could not find the timing mark on the flywheel, I thought I had it when I installed the head, but I must have seen a ghost. I pulled the #1 glow plug and used a piece of wire, but apparently the crank position sensor is more accurate than I. There’s probably 15-20* of rotation that I couldn’t feel a change in piston height, so I aimed for the center of that. Computer tells me I may have been off by 6* or more. As soon as it’s off idle it corrects, but presumably cam timing is off by that far too. So I guess I’ll go for it again sometime.

It did start well this morning. So there’s that, and I’ll take that.

Horn issue is a bad clock spring. The giving car has a good clock spring IF I can get the airbag out of the wheel. It will come. I don’t need the wheel or bag.

Backup lights are good, plug at the switch had broken wires. Terminals will be here Monday.

Non tinted front windows swapped yesterday. I guess that’s _actually_ an issue. I haven’t stood by through an inspection since that window rule went in place so I’m not certain why. I just know it is. Joe steamed my 1.8t and pulled tint to pass it.

Inspection ready!
Easy starts since timing adjusted.
Picked up an annoying exhaust to body contact rattle. Will fix that with turbo swap whenever that happens.

That should happen sooner than later: registration expires in April on the wagon and the golf has another year. Be nice to transfer instead of renewing.

Is it just me that the only reason any of your road driven vehicles get fixed are to pass inspections?  Lol

This thing roll coal at least?

They all always have little things wrong. Months late inspections are just moving deadlines.

More like the inspections get delayed until the little things are taken care of. The only REAL wait item here was swapping front windows.

Tried to get ac up in both TDIs today. They both said no. Both have potentially proper charge (85ish psi static), neither will engage compressor. May be bad pressure switch, could be compressor clutches, tbd.

Big turbo on.

Drain line (looked crappy, fitting to block not torqued) and PCV likely oil leak culprits. Intake was HORRIBLE and I’m pretty sure I cleaned it when I did the head and started driving it. So I think I’ve got lots of oil coming into the intake Andy here was evidence of oil coming externally from the egr and shutdown valve.

Catch can ordered.

Didn’t have all the right fittings to go air filter to turbo and turbo to charge cooler.

Parts to wrap will be here Thursday.
Boost gauge and pyrometer will be here Tuesday.

Camshaft and ecu tune sometime soon. I’m a couple degrees off on crank timing since my timing belt job and it throws a code, so I’ve got to go half as far as swapping a cam anyway. Should be almost a fast car after that.

Beetle will donate traction control too I think. It has full stability control, hope that’ll still work.
