Ford Ranger ECM wiring
« on: July 14, 2015, 11:08:08 AM »
Here is how you eliminate all the wiring inside the vehicle. The circuits shaded in yellow in the diagrams are all that is needed for the ECM to function. Stock gauges will no longer work, you will remove about 20 pounds in wiring.

These circuits share common wires to the circuit number.

Circuit 361 Red wire, Pin 97 and 71 Switched power, usually ignition switch on dash
Circuit 570 Black with white stripe, Pin 51,76,77,103. Ground. Make sure that this goes to a clean body or frame ground.
Circuit 37 Yellow wire, Pin 55, this is a constant keep alive power wire, hook directly to battery with a 10a fuse. Do not run thru the battery disconnect, this keeps your computer from losing its learned values.

These are the only 3 wires you need. I cut the body harness off at the large connector on the drivers side of the engine, leaving about 6" of the harness as pigtails,  and used a continuity tester to find the wires on the connector that correspond to the ECM wires.

The starter does not need the extra starter relay, you can run a push button 12v to the small post on the starter solenoid attached to the starter.

Check to see if you get power at the middle pin of the connector at the coil. If not then splice in an ignition power to the middle wire on the front coil pack connector.

Update 9-14-15

Just an update, we wired my brolite today using this write up and found that there was one wire left out which is what caused Michael to not have power at the coils. From the main bulkhead connector, you need to keep the solid yellow, solid red, two black wires with white stripes, and the one forgotten from the writeup is red with a green stripe. This last one is your coil power

i cant get mine to run.

really wish i could find non blurry usable pinout diagrams for the 2.3 ecm

smells like fuel in exhaust after cranking.

everything checks out.   im not getting any spark.

Red wire (ignition), yellow wire (keep alive), and ground found from Engine block plug.  all pins match to above on ECM connector.

Check ground from body to battery and engine.

The only other ting I see is pin 40, Fuel Pump Monitor input, That could be the shut off switch that needs ground or power. ?

I remember having an issue when I did mine, but cant recall what the problem was.

I wish I had one I could work on.

A little internet searching and I think that is the issue.

Try adding ground or power to (cant remember if it + or - to that pin) pin 40 and see if that works.

OK got mine going tonight.  for what ever reason power to the coils was lost.

here is my summary after 2 nights of scratching my head and double checking things  / pining out the ecm blabla.

(1) gut all wires from truck chassis, leave ECM harness to Engine untouched, cut wires at engine bulkhead connector on driver side of engine near brake booster, i left them about 2' long.
(2) from the wad of engine connector wires, discard all but the solid yellow wire (ecm keep alive), solid red wire (ignition wire), Red with green trace is ignition coil power, and two heavy gage black with white stripe wires ( ECM grounds).  nothing else is needed.  Purple wire is OBD signal if you care.  power and ground to these connections the motor will fire with fuel and a cranking starter motor.

(3) Alternator kick wires need fused ignition power also.  It's a grey connector with two wires yellow and green both need power for the alt to charge.

The easiest way to stream line the new wiring is to use a master disconnect and a push button for starter motor cranking.  (1)Master disconnect supply side hook up a small 2 amp fuse for PCM keep alive.  (2) maintain alt charge wire connection  (3)Master disconnect load side ON hook up feeds for fused power to fuel pump, (4)fan, (5)ignition/coil, (5)alternator kick circuits.  My truck the disconnect feeds 4 maxi fuses cut from 1 section of the OEM fuse box.

done.

Engine Connector

3 wires needed from engine connector

two grounds, green with yellow stripe (later found not needed, fuel pump input), solid red (+12 ignition), solid yellow (+12 keep alive)

power jumped to coil power, center pin on 3 pin plug.

ECM pins checked per above

id like to know if yours or Mikes needs coil power jumped, or if i cut something i shouldnt have....  i didnt feel like pulling apart the engine harness to follow the OEM coil power.
