air bags for rear of truck experiences needed
« on: March 17, 2014, 10:53:34 AM »
With the plow prep package on my chevy, my truck sits level.  Put on trailer and it starts to look like I am way overloaded in the rear.  It handles fine and doesn't wag at all. Thinking about adding air bags in rear to help level load and keep from drawing any un-needed attention.  Anyone got any experience with they?

I used the Timbren extended bumpstops http://timbren.com/ on a couple of trucks and they worked well and were cheap.

I have Firestone Ride rites and like them. They're pretty easy to instal and definitely leveled it out with the bigger trailers on it.

my cummins has a firestone kit on it installed by the previous owner. when loaded with a trailer and air in the bags the rear end is VERY firm. With it being a SRW and the few times ive towed a goose neck (one being a wedge) i was very please with how it handled and felt. I have no experince towing without bags.

I have the air bag helpers on my dodge. Don't know the brand since they came on it and never really looked at them. I love them and would get them on another truck.

Thanks for the input for a few hundred $  doesn't seem you can go wrong.  Smike Next time I am loaded I will bring it across the scales.  I know what me and the truck weights, so it will be easy to see what the trailer is putting on the rear end by leaving the trailer wheels off the scale.

High Miler came with a set, but one damaged bag. I got replacement bags and have never installed them. I don't think I've ever missed them, but maybe I don't know what I'm missing

My truck slams the bump stops when the bags get low. That's when I know it's time to pump some air back in them.

I had ~3,000lb in bed of my truck a few times and didn't really need air bags. However my truck have the camper special package so it have overload springs to take over when it see the weight. 245k miles and the POs was farmers so my truck was used on the farm and pulled trailers and goosenecks entire of its life before me. Gravel road dust was everywhere on it.
