Harry's going to be hogging down the road with a new jeep tomorrow night!!!
;D ;D ;D

Go girl!
-
Scratch that, Harry will be hogging down the road with my new jeep Friday!
-
booo not soon enough
-
Oh boy, guess its time to start FSO and goose shopping.
-
Never mind, no jeep for me yet :( :( :(
-
Jeep acquired!!!!! ;D
-
Nice! Now, as much as it will kill Harry not to pick up the tools, Hannah needs to do her own work! Go girl!
-
What are the plans for this chrome door handled beast?
-
Slowly but surely I'll learn to do it on my own, but for now I'll need Harry's help!
The plan so far is upgrade the rear axel, a few inches of lift, lockers, and some 33's. Needs a few minor things like a battery, water pump, and radiator so I can get it registered and inspected.
And the best part of it all will be the paint job I'm planning on doing!!!
-
Panty dropping? ;)
-
boxer dropping... :o
-
this thread just took weird turn
-
/weird :o haha
Spacers, bastard leaf pack, longer shocks, swaybar discos, free rear Aussie, some streetable 32-33s. Gas tank and t-case skids, ZJ tie rod.
Driving this thing around the driveway... forgot how nice stock XJs drive!
-
i have sway bar discos and ZJ tie rod for this hog.
also have some good 1310 joints i'm sending in case they are needed.
-
i have 2" boost spacers maybe some used shocks
-
oh i have shocks too. rancho rs9000 fronts.
-
oh i have shocks too. rancho rs9000 fronts.
I have these same rear shocks in my basement someone gave me to test fit like 3 years ago... Hmmm
-
Yay! Thanks guys! I can't wait to start... I'm going to drive Harr crazy! First up this weekend is a battery, hood latch, and water pump... and a good cleaning. Jeepie's got a little mold growing on her in spots.
-
mmmmmmm mmmmmold :)
I have 4 of those eye-eye Edelbrock shocks from a couple years ago. I don't recall lengths but I can check if they may help. Turns out most everything I need is stem-eye.
-
First weekend was a success! While only breaking two bolts, bruising two knuckles, and having a bit of help from Harry, I installed the new water pump, (harry mostly did the belt) and we put in the new battery. She was almost bone dry though, barely any fluids left in there. We filled up the oil, coolant, and a bunch of water. The check engine light went off so that was great!
She was blowing a bit of smoke out the tailpipe, H said she might need alternator or a head gasket or just a new motor worst case scenario. All in all, I'm happy she's running!! Hopefully it will just all clear out after she gets going on the road a little bit.
Next time we're going to put some slime in the tire that keeps going flat, then ill be able to drive it around the driveway!! ;D
-
Got a new alternator in jeep this weekend. The battery still wasn't charging and I figured out the connections just needed a little scratching up. I might not be strong enough to unscrew some rusty bolts, but I'm figuring out how some stuff works :D
Harry towed Jeepie out to my house in Massachusetts so I can register it after the new year!!
Brake lights are being funky. When the lights are off and I press the brakes they work fine. When the lights are on and I press the brakes the rear passenger brake works but the rear driver side light goes off when the brake is pressed. Going to have figure that out before it gets inspected. I also need to install a new hood latch and find new side mirrors. Then it'll be good to go... For now!
This winter's plan: buy back Harry's old rear axel and put that in, fix the locker I got from Harry's friend, put that in, put stronger steering in, lift a little, and start looking for tires by springtime.
I'm starting to feel like one of the boys... Sitting at work today thinking of how much I wanted to be home playing with my jeep and not at work!

Probably just a blown bright eliment in one of the lights. I think they are wired to do that for safety.

FSO -> bigger trailer
Funny, I think I said we could use my truck to double hawg both of ours down ONCE this summer if we could find a trailer to borrow locally... funny how that turned into a "few" times ;D
-
Hahah, I suppose once would do, if we get to a few local places :D

Jeep got registered yesterday!!! Good to see plates on Jeepie!! Got to drive it all around in the snow, 4wd did some awesome work through the big snow drifts last night too. Thanks to Spencer last week at the junkyard, with his good bargaining skills, I got a fan shroud, chrome mirrors, and a battery hold-downy-thingy for $15. Plus a pocket full of fuses and some sweet emblems. Got to use my new tool kit too that I got over Christmas!
The verdict is still unknown yet if Jeepie needs a head gasket or a new engine... But for now all is working good in the snow here!!! (http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/01/04/e2yda8eg.jpg)(http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/01/04/ymu4eba6.jpg)(http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/01/04/uje8e3y4.jpg)

Already got the fingerlakes one on there :)

Jeepie needs a track bar. With plans for 2-3" lift and disconnecting sway bar, do you guys think I'll be ok with a stock replacement?
-
I would get an adjustable.
-
I was mostly worried about the stock type joint holding up to flex. I suppose then the steering becomes the limiting factor, don't think she's going to be changing much of that anytime soon. Not sure it's an issue with small lift shocks anyway. Thought $80 for Moog and redrill the hole 3/4" over or whatever was a good budget option
-
Pretty happy with the adjustable Rusty's unit on mine.
-
i ran a rocky road adjustable on my ZJ...
was very happy with it

Drilled mine and it has been ok

Did some 8.25 work! We got Harry's old 8.25 back from the guy he sold it to last year. It was siting around so it just needs a few things. I got all the gears and oil out in preparation for the locker. Didn't have new spring and pins to put the locker together so that'll have to wait a week. Can't decide if I want a solid cover on this axle too or just get one for the front. Hmm...
-
Solid cover is worth every penny of $60
-
(http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/05/20/u7usaqem.jpg)
-
:) thanks for getting them mounted Harry!!! Got my wheel spacers and coils ready so I'm ready to do this!!
-
Solid diff cover and spring kit are on their way! It's so satisfying buying new things for Jeepie :D
-
Nice tires.
New parts are the best!
-
Day 1 of my jeep build:
Front end is done! Put new coils, Spencer's old shocks and new brake lines. Now wonder I was wobbling down the road, my old shocks were completely useless. Broke a piece on the sway bar discos so we'll have to do those another day. Drilled the hole for the bump stops but those too will be put in another day. Mounted wheel spacers and got my new tires on! I'm so glad I spent a little extra on my wheels, I love them! Then I helped Harry put together an Aussie locker for the 8.25. Got it all assembled and put a solid cover on. Then we took the Dana 35 out of the jeep to swap with the 8.25 tomorrow. We have to swap all the break parts since the axel came with none. Hopefully it will all fit correctly and it'll all go smoothly. Got a set of stock leaves, shackle mounts and u-bolts for the lift. Should be all set to wheel soon!!! Something's going on with my hood latch though... Had to take out the lights to open the hood which was a pain! (http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/06/15/ana9anub.jpg)(http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/06/15/ebu6y9uh.jpg)(http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/06/15/typype4e.jpg)(http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/06/15/4yse4uzu.jpg)

Going to do some fender trimming tomorrow too! Made a sweet 20 point turn in the driveway to flip the jeep around.
-
Sawzall = Fun!
Keep up the progress!
-
Great progress, looking good Hannah! Keep the updates coming :)
-
all XJ;s have a square hole behind the inner fender to stick a screw driver in to pop the hood latch!
awesome build!
-
Thanks Smike! We'll have to check that out tomorrow!!
-
(http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/06/16/ygupymuh.jpg) Bigger is better in this case! Brake parts swapping from the d35 to 8.25

Day 2: lift is done, shackles and extra leaves worked out great. It's about 3" in the front and 4" in the back. Harry broke a bolt in the drive shaft yolk so it's not drivable yet. We have a bunch of little things to finish up too. We had to drop the gas tank to put the shackles in which was a pain. Luckily all the brake parts swapped into the 8.25 perfectly. We weren't sure if it was going to go smoothly. Next weekend we will do some trimming. Thinking of leaving the flares on and just moving them up. Next up are my rocker panels, already have steel for those, and some sort of bumper situation for recovery points.
Long weekend, got lots done, pretty excited to go wheeling this summer!

-

-
Axle*
Brakes*
Shackle nut broke free inside rail, that set us back a lot today. Would have been able to do some trimming if that hadn't happened! I was all for ditching the flares and trimming... But seeing it now with the flares on, I think it would be naked without them. Trim rear flare a little and relocate the front up higher after trimming.
Looks great!
-
Really looks sharp as it sits!! I'd do what was possible to keep the flares for now assuming they won't get ripped off super easily.

all XJ;s have a square hole behind the inner fender to stick a screw driver in to pop the hood latch!
Can you elaborate on this? 2nd hood latch failed in 3 months... ready for hood pins haha
-
I'm all for something on the outside if is easier to open the hood. Would the hood latch things from a wrangler work on a Cherokee somehow?
-
That's true... you couldn't even pull the cable when it was working right after we freed everything up and greased the hell out of the mechanism!
-
this knowledge can be attributed from working on wonder 2.0
this only works if the latches work, and the interior cable is either broke or jammed up i believe
with the hood open look at the fender next to the passenger latch. there is a square hole in the inner fender-
with the hood closed peel back the inner fender liner on passenger side, and you can access the passenger latch to pop it open, you then can get the the middle of the hood to pull the linkage to pop the driver side if needed.
Chip didnt believe me what the hole was for until i showed him on the four XJ's of different vintages in his shop they all have the square hole. Mj's also...
-
I'm thinking these are an easier fix

Fixed the yoke and a couple other things and took this for a drive.
Hit 65, no more death wobbling. Accelerates and stops respectably for what it is. Rear springs are stiff, hoping they settle a little but not expecting much from a bastard pack. No driveshaft vibes! Nice surprise. Feels a little toed in, need to adjust that.
Locker is acting up though. Pops and unloads under all loads. Need to check clearances, this is the same issue the PO of the locker had.
-
Worn cross pin or egged out case hole, out of spec
-
Thinking about this... I've done welded rear in the snow, not too bad for someone used to trying to do donuts and fishtail around turns. Ie, not Hannah. No offense, Hannah.
How does a lunchbox in the rear compare? I thought the front was great and helped pull me around turns.
Would a limited slip be a good compromise for this thing's intended use as wheeler, snow commuter, and driving around town fun vehicle? I realize off-road ability would be affected, but would it be better than an open diff enough to consider doing? Trak-loc is sub $300.
Any other options I'm not thinking of here within a reasonable price range?
-
that locker should act like a spool under load, and an open diff under coast.
in a turn as long as the inside wheel has enough traction not to spin in a turn the outside wheel will ratchet
usually an auto an aussie is pretty transparent, a stick some times gets some interesting things with drivetrain slop and hard shifting
-
i'm only understanding a few things out of this conversation... ???
i definitely want to be able to drive it in the winter (on my long commute to work it has to be safe and good on the highway), but also have it good enough to wheel. maybe this summer just have it all open if we cant get the aussie to work, and then by next year have something in there?
-
Limited slip or open the rear until she learns more. And she will learn quickly so be ready. She's a smart girl!
Even better, a selectable!
-
Locker in the front will tend to push in the snow. Locker in back will tend to oversteer but I would say is much more predictable and finessable.
If winter street driving is a sincere goal, limited slips or selectable a is the real way to go. That said, if one has a sense for vehicle dynamics anything can be done and be fine. And if you drive off-road there's no much of a way to keep from getting that sort of sense :)

Locker in back will tend to oversteer but I would say is much more predictable and finessable.
This is exactly how I felt when I first experienced my rear locker and winter driving. If the locker stays, the best thing to do would be to go to an empty parking lot when the snow starts falling and get a feel for how it's going to handle in 2 wheel drive. It always amazed me how predictable the whole vehicle felt after I got it, also controlled power slides are always fun. In 4 wheel drive, I don't even really notice the locker in the snow, it just stays planted.
-
I left my front aussie in over the winter. It may have been a mistake as I was more reluctant to use 4wd in traffic. I did find that I had to be much gentler with the throttle if turning in 4wd. I would do it again though. Straight line starts were much better and I had no "up hill fish tail" even when the front were not getting much traction.
No experience with the rear being aussied. Yet.
-
Gap is .173, instructions say it should be between .145-.170
How can I bring that in? Both thrust washers are in.
-
Have a mic you can measure the washers? They should be around. 026"
-
Bill would say 173 is fine. Are there flat marks on the crospin from the locker? Does the cross pin rattle around in the case or tight fit?
-
Cross pin felt tight, might try to get some thicker thrust washers and new cross pin and try again at some point. Threw the spiders back for now with the aim to get it driveable soonish.
Needs shorter rear shocks, new exhaust installed, fenders trimmed. I drove it to work today. Drives pretty nice.
-

Getting Rausch ready for September! Harry fought with the transfer case skid plate but finally got it on. It was running hot on the highway a few weeks ago well over 210 so we put a new radiator in, mixed up some new 50/50 antifreeze/water, and took out the ac condenser which was super crusty and was probably blocking a lot of cool air. Electric fan was also barely working so we replaced that with a new used fan. Drove it on the highway last night and it stayed cool at 190. Now trying to decide if we should drive it to rausch or tow it with Harry's new truck!
All that's left now to donate bump stops and recovery points. We have two for the front, but not sure what's happening in the back yet. Trying to convince Harry that we can build a rear bumper before rausch, not sure if that's happening yet.

Drove jeep to work finally. Did great at 70 mph! Brake pedal is a little sticky.
Co-workers think I'm cool, boss thinks I'm nuts. I was telling her about my jeep a few weeks ago and she was like, "oh so you have one of those trucks when I see it in a parking lot I think to myself why on earth would anyone ever have something like that" (http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14/09/02/2aea117847720f840e44840d5a0b7345.jpg)

Got my recovery points on yesterday! Got two in the front and one in the rear under the bumper. When the bumper gets bad then we'll build a new one. All that's left before Rausch is bump stops and to secure driver seat since the bracket is broken, and make sure the back isn't rubbing since we only trimmed the front.

Jeepie needs another 33" MTZ, tightened u bolts, maybe a new cross pin and another attempt at the rear locker. Then more rocks!!! Makes me miss my 32s/open diff days... A little. Simpler times
-
Good to hear it was a successful trip and still enjoyable.
-
It was awesome! Great trip! I can't wait to go again! Just need to stockpile a few tires :)
-
Because it's a project driving my jeep anywhere, about 4ish miles from my house the leaves shifted and of course I don't have a high lift with me. So I drove home 4 miles going 10mph with the leaves grinding into the sidewall of my rear passenger tire. Smells like burnt tire. Everyone shoveling was staring at my loud driving. (http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/15/01/28/40d96104d4bf0a12f4ea07f420afbe9c.jpg)

No fun hope the tire is ok
-
I'm waiting I find some better tires anyway, haven't replaced the spare since the Rausch trip in the fall! I think that tire is still ok just a little worn, it'll be my new spare :) Harrys going to weld a little bracket thing to hold the leaves in place. At least it was near my house and not on the highway

-
I can't believe I just spent more on the tires then the whole jeep. I'm very excited but maybe they're bad luck since Merc had an accident
-
New tires means more wheeling this season!
-
New tires are awesome! 8)
-
So I never updated a few weeks ago when the leaves shifted in the back. They ended up shifting because the U bolts were loose and wiggly, and on the rear passenger side the smallest leaf was broken in half, and the end of the second smallest leaf was also broken off. Not sure when that happened or why they were loose. Harry ended up torching a hole through the smallest leaf half and was able to put it back in even though it is half the size.
it also didn't want to start by turning the key all winter, so I've been starting it under the hood. Harry did some rewiring and fixed that.
Bringing all my tires in the morning to get mounted! I'll start looking for a good spare possibly, and if anyone knows of a spare snowflake wheel let me know!

4 lanes of traffic in Hartford. Needed to change lanes. Looked down to mirror and back up and lady in front had stopped. Locked up front tires but still collided. I thought I was going to drive away until the radiator started leaking. Cop forced a non AAA tow but confirmed on the phone that AAA would reimburse. $132 ticket. Rad support and headlight area needs a little tweaking back and spare radiator car came with installed. Could have been much, much worse. Lady I hit, cop, tow truck driver and insurance company were all great. Hopefully I just pay the ticket and move on.
Back on topic. No test drive today due to non operational wipers. Pulled assembly and found motor warm. Disassembled and found small magnet fragment inside. Upon cleaning the magnet became unattached. Almost wanted to work but no luck. New one procured. Supposed to be sunny tomorrow so we can get some nice shots of it :)

Thanks Harr!! Can't wait :-D

Is that a hack & tap or something similar? Looks different that what I'm used to seeing...
-
With the bolt holding the yoke on, I'm pretty certain it's a hack & tap. And now I know what that means! :)
-
It's a hack & tap, the stock driveshaft was bottoming out so we got these parts and Harry's picking up a front drive shaft to stick in there. Headed to Rausch this weekend to see how the new tires do!
-
8)
-
Since we did the lift and 8.25 swap at the same time, the longer D35 driveshaft was a good fit, maybe a little on the long side. Now that the rear has settled, it's definitely too long.
Hack'n'tap is the only option for a 242. Older cases have the oil seal around the slip yoke. Had to also get the replacement seal housing for hers which is that red piece.
-
Been awhile, Jeep needs some much needed love! Since I've been busy moving to NY recently, but really want to wheel this fall for the women's day wheeling event at Rausch in October, Harry's helping me out. Tonight he replaced the stock control arms with some beefier arms we got used. Dented the arms pretty bad last time wheeling so it was good to finally do this. My next few weekend plans are to help make rocker panels and weld on stiffeners to the unibody before it gets worse. Since last wheeling trip my door is a little off and rain leaks in just a little bit. :o Going to try the locker in the rear with a new cross pin this time. Crossing our fingers this will fix it's issues!

Productive weekend! First, took the t-case skid plate and cross member off, used the grinder and got all the black coating off the unibody rails, and got the stiffeners welded in. Cut out end caps and welded them to the box tube ends, then ground them smooth. I finally got to weld for the first time, I was super excited :D Cut out the old rockers and Harry and I fit the new ones in and he tacked them all. There's a spot we had to cut out that was crushed and rusty so we'll have to fill it in later. After I left Harry's tonight, he welded more of the rocker panels, until he ran out of oxygen. While I'm at work this week he'll prime the stiffeners and I got some flat metallic charcoal spray paint for the rocker panels to match the flares and door panels. Next up... lockers ;D

Reattempting Aussie 8.25 install with new cross pin and thicker thrust washers. That better do it!
-
what was the center gap before?
-
.173
-
That's OK. You can go up to .180 in a gray area... but with her tire size I wouldn't be worried at .173.
-
Was popping on road before and took it out. So got new crosspin and an assortment of thrust washers of various thicknesses to try to tighten it up a little. Previous owner experienced popping and would unlock sometimes on the trail. Dan and I inspected and teeth are a little worn on one side but doesn't look like it should be enough to cause an issue.

Cross pin is a very good place to start. Slipping can sometimes be caused by a bent axle shaft or tube. Take a look when you have some time. You can send me pics of the teeth and I will let you know what I think. If you are still having issues, I have a C8.25 scratch and dent she can have. Some of our older 8.25 Australian units had a bad couple batches that were replaced under a warranty recall. Do you know if her locker says 'made in USA?'
-
This locker is at least a couple years old so I'm guessing it is an Australian unit. I will get some pictures.
-
I would demand stickers for all this hassle from Customer Service.
What a pain!

Busy weekend coming up!

Got front and rear Aussies installed today, both seem to be working. Thanks Cora for hooking a girl up! Also got a new Solid cover on in the front, thanks to Harry :) Got my rocker panels and stiffeners painted too. All that's left is to put the t-case skid back on tomorrow, needs to be straightened out a bit first. Almost ready for Womens's Wheeling at Rausch next weekend!!(http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/10/17/d3cea0ff9cdc880b7d2dfc632fca72e2.jpg)(http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/10/17/80097755f11c41e7085bf24c713b2138.jpg)(http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/10/17/dbcd8046e306ffa72ba30498220feca8.jpg)(http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/10/17/315dce81f60613590afbf1b341e8debc.jpg)(http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/10/17/7e8277ac867406774011bebc2de86061.jpg)

Thanks Cora for the pictures and feature in the latest JP Freek Adventure magazine, pages 56 and 68-73! Women's Wheeling day was a blast! http://currentissue.jpfreek.com/publication/index.php?m=16482&l=1#%7B%22issue_id%22:282532,%22page%22:1%7D

Decided last minute last night that with a free day today we'd finally get started on my front bumper build. Got some steel this morning and got pretty far with it today. Making brackets wasn't too bad, and I got to practice my welding skills which got better by the end. Tomorrow we will weld in the side pieces and start grinding them all smooth.

Yesterday I got the side pieces of the bumper tacked on and welded caps in the ends. Trimmed the recovery points. Smoothed out all the welds so far. Then I plasma cut some pieces that will double up the recovery point, and wedges for underneath strength. First time Harry's let me plasma cut, and it's the greatest thing! I never want to use cut off wheels again!

Plasma cutters are the best 8)
-
Thanks Cora! I really like how it's coming out so far. Simple and keeps the front still looking clean and untouched. Harry thinks I'm ready for the welds that won't be ground down so hopefully that will go ok next! Plasma is the best!! I told Harry I'll plasma all his stuff for him

Coming along! Welded up the bumper today. I think I'm improving :) Just need to do some grinding, painting, and cut holes in the tow points.

So, 3 weeks from motor order date and my 1.5 week lead time motor has not shipped. Motor is built aside from cam. Two, yes two cams have shown up chipped or broken. So driving this sweet ride 270 miles to RC is looking like the plan if we want to wheel July 4th weekend.
Coming up with a prep checklist
-Accessory squeak, guessing either alt or idler
-Steering box leaked from column input when let droop during bumper removal, self healed. ?? investigate
-Dim headlights, investigate. Maybe add some aux lighting
-Starts hard, consider ignition tune up
-Perform Dan's driveway alignment method using chalk or something, he swears by it but I need to be educated
-Gas leaks from top of tank when topped off, safety issue worth dealing with before trip?
-Check ball joints, wheel bearings, tie rod ends, wheel spacers
-Check and top all fluids
-Check and tighten all suspension connections
-Check brakes
Battery, belt, radiator are all new, cooled well on last highway trip. Runs good, has been reliable since we've had it, though has probably only had 3000 miles put on it.
I forgot about the gas leak until I started making this list, bah. Drips from corner of skid when topped all the way off, appears to be coming from the top of the tank. I suspect there is some slight rotting up there and the skidplate pushed the tank up into the floor a bit.
Reasonable amount to get done in two weeks I think, and all things that need to be checked and dealt with anyway. But leaves the potential for several hundred dollars to be spent on a budget wheeler inside a short period of time.
-
so set the tow with a tape measure and fill tank to 3/4 is what i read
-
*toe
ditto!
-
lol
-
Needs MA safety inspection too, or just go with it expired and run risk of a fine if pulled over
-
I think it's going down and back on expired sticker
Box isn't leaking
Howl is just idler
Front end feels tight
Gonna drop tank and replace breathers if that's what's leaking, or whole tank if needed. Tanks been out before so shouldn't be too bad.
-
Gas leak is fixed. Problem #1 for Rausch prep.

Today: Gas tank replaced, idler pulley no longer squeezing, lights replaced, alignment done, front bumper all smoothed and painted, drying now.
Tomorrow: Tune up, replace broken wheel stud, attach bumper
-
Bumper came out great! Tune up now and test drive!

30 mile test drive on backroad and highway yielded acceptable results. Didn't wander too bad, power and rpms were fine in 3rd gear lockout, no noises or vibes.
Ready for a 600 mile round trip with two days of wheeling in the middle! Fine, but I am guessing we will be ready for a truck and trailer after this trip.

We have arrived home safe and sound from our 2016 4th of July UA experience.
Pretty consistent shake and bake now at all highway speeds. Rear brakes and hard start need dealing with before too much more time but not bad for what it did on the trails and approaching 205k.
Ready to have truck back for next trip but we had fun and glad we did it.
-
It got beat on pretty good for driven to the trails. I wouldn't be surprised if the shake n bake is tire balance if they're not dynamic. Spin on wheels or some lost weights depending on method.
Lil jeepie did damn good!

Thanks! Had lots of fun. Had my doubts but we made it!
Definitely lost some tire weights, we will check it out next free weekend.

Forgot to update a few weeks ago... after jeepie sitting for weeks and weeks and weeks Harry and I finally had a chance to look it over after it's voyage to Rausch earlier this summer. The issue of starting really hard and slowly got worse after that trip. We replaced the fuel pump and fuel filter. Seems to be starting a little bit better. After hardly having breaks after last trip we replaced the master cylinder which led to the discovery of a rusty bleeder and had to replace a caliper. It was a long weekend of Harry working on his truck and instructing me through the steps, helping only when I needed more muscle, and me being grumpy about working on a hot weekend a few weeks ago, jeepies all fixed up and we're all ready and signed up for black trails for women's wheeling at Rausch later this month. Can't wait!

Great day at women's wheeling. Rained hard last night into the morning, leaving it slippery for most of the morning. Had a small group of four today, a d60 jk, a buggy, and Mollie with an equivalent xj to mine.
Got a bit sketched out on the Walk in the Park hill climb, sliding sideways, got a winch tug to help me out and then made it with slack the whole time. Next time...
Did trail 20, always a favorite, while the rest of the group did trail 13 along rock creek I ventured in and had the best time. First time in rock creek and cruises the whole way to the cut through at the end of 13. My new favorite Rausch trail! Then we went to Yellow Jacket, the d60 broke a shaft on their way up, the xj's cruised up. Met up with Mark Wing, did trail 6 behind the office. Fun and challenging trail, getting better every time I wheel. While heading up the end climb my transfer case popped out of 4 low, which happens earlier n the day but didn't think anything over it. Remembers this happens once last year. It continued to happen more frequently on our way out of the park. Done for the weekend, will check it out in a few weekends.

Means you care and can drive ;)

Got the 242 out and disassembled today.
As suspected, pads on both forks brittle and strewn throughout inside of case. Fork for planetary engagement is worn enough it will need to be replaced. Main symptom was inability to stay in 4 low, makes sense.
Also found this retaining washer really beat up and made getting the output shaft out very difficult. This appears to bottom out near the needle bearing inside the planetary housing. When I did the hack'n'tap, I noticed there was probably 1/8-1/4" in/out play on the output shaft. I am guessing this is the reason for the beat up washer but I don't understand what should keep the shaft from doing that. I'm sure it got worse with the fixed yoke. Maybe I don't care, unless it somehow exacerbated the shift fork issue. Anyone have any insight?

was the shifter linkage properly aligned?
IIRC.. parts mounted to the case, transmission, and unibody... lots of tweakable there and fully not engaged forks will be what you have found...
-
Popped linkage off t case in Rausch parking lot and ensured the paddle was in low. Issue remained

Weekend update:
T-case rebuild- Replaced beat up washer, welded and ground down a new pad on the old fork, reassembled t-case and installed back in.
Built a new crossmember since the old/original one is super beat up. Will finish installing it next weekend.
Will get t-case skid straightened back out and put back in, then hopefully give it a go and crossing fingers all will be fixed.

I helped with design/layout, I drilled the holes, and lifted it into place under the Jeep. The rest was eagerly tackled by my better half

Installed the finished crossmember and t-case skid plate. Test drive around the yard and seems to be working. Keeping fingers crossed for next wheeling trip.

Spent 4th of July working on my rear bumper. Repurposed Harry's old bumper to fit mine... between straightening it out, filling cracks, and grinding old paint off, it would have been faster building a new one lights aren't hooked up yet, since we weren't planning on making it this weekend.
Trailer space opened up for this weekend at Rausch so both jeeps are heading down. Didn't want to wheel again without this upgrade so Monday PM we decided to get it done!
Proper recovery points now will make this weekend all the more fun.
