I guess I never started a thread for this car
It threw a transmission error two or three times in the last month. A key cycle would get it back, no drama.
On the way home from work last night the trans went into limp home and stayed there.
Lasts through a battery disconnect.
I finally went through getting the bmw diagnostics software INPA installed in the last hour and have it talking to everything EXCEPT the transmission.
Both TCM fuses are good. I’m going to have to see if there are any other diagnostics to do before tcm replacement.
Almost exactly at 150,000 miles. First issue after working around bad top sensors and fixing some oil leaks. I think I’ve put 7-8k on it.

Saved and cleared codes in ECU and TCU.
Errors didn’t come back immediately. Took a 5 mile test drive, all good.
Going to take it to work tomorrow and see what happens, and look at the stored codes in more detail.

4 heat cycles, 70+ miles. Nothing.
Hmmmm
Back to daily status for now. Need to look at the codes I dumped in detail.

153k it’s back in limp. Needs a manual swap. Damnit
Noticed some oil spots on the rear bumper. Low fluid?

Got this in the air tonight for a moment. Wanted to drive it in the warm if wet weather this week.
Rear output is dry as a bone. Front of trans is quite wet and I suspect it’s for a front pump seal leak. I did not change fluid but just topped it off. Want to see if it acts right when filled up. Took about 3 quarts, which supposedly is what a quickie pan drain yields, so that’s really fuckin low.
Didn’t smell burned. Did look quite frothy.
153k on it.
Could send it “with an oil leak”
If I drop the trans to do a pump seal it seems silly not to rebuild it doesn’t it? I need to look at longevity of this trans in other models that actually get miles. Sarah does seem to want it for a summer driver if the Z3 proves itself for me.

Coolant leak maybe found. Need to pull some things apart and pressure check. Sounds like radiator side tank, I heard a hiss when I got home yesterday and saw steam
Not a bad leak but it has been getting worse.
Will drive it today and tomorrow then put it back on the list. Now with rad and trans front pump seal as the items. Bah

big oil puddle under this after the trans top-off. clearly a big seal issue somewhere.
these middle-aged car problems are tiresome.

Trans out. Trans jack ordered for reinstallation. This thing is heavy. And I find that I drive through a dumb rubber doughnut plus 2 u-joints and a carrier bearing. Weird. I was expecting a slip yoke and 1 piece shaft. IRS stuff I guess ¯\_(?)_/¯
I was hoping to see an extraordinary mess between the trans and torque converter, but I do not. Will still move forward with changing that seal since it did appear to be the source.
No huge mess from rear main on the engine. Some drool from front main. Bmw used material for gaskets that acts like hard plastic after 20 years of heat cycles, so most every static gasket that I didn’t change yet weeps just a hair. Probably do valve cover gasket at some point and see if that kills the majority of the rest of the oil drips.

heads up, all of the cheap transmission jacks only tilt in one dimension. they have a useless sliding function. i missed this when i ordered mine. modified it to tilt both dimensions pretty easily though.

This thing is sloppy but does tilt both ways.
Got home too late to actually test it out.

Proved it leaks when sitting static though. It’s low fluid level now so I tilted it forward. TC still fully seated and it’s giving a drip about every 7 seconds.

first rockauto fail I think I've had. should be just about done putting this back together, instead I'm looking for any local availability on the input seal I've had on my shelf for [checks notes] 76 days.
part number and lookup match, but actual dimension is over a quarter inch off on OD.
thrilling.

finding lots of cross references that have dimensions all over the map. decided to go with the BMW parts counter option so I've got a sneeze more confidence in right part and hopefully a better cross ref if it's still wrong... 🤞🏻
