440 3 phase
« on: December 20, 2019, 06:38:42 PM »
good info here

http://metalwebnews.com/howto/ph-conv/ph-conv.html

still need to get 440 volt though.

i have a 3hp static converter that runs my 220 3 phase late right now so far.    transforming up from that would be nice.  not sure its possible.  and i think the new drill is 4 hp

cant i just buy two 5hp motors and stick them together?  one 220 single phase and one 440 3 phase, sounds way easier and cheaper than converters and transformers

have yet to find a step up transformer- just stuff on how to run step down backwards, but there are issues there    need to read more

15kva transformer

looks like something to good to run in reverse with a rotary or static converter

bingo bango

5hp rotary phase converter
480v 15kva transformer (to be run backwards 220 to 480)
picked up 1 mile from my house for 600$

will be cool to ditch the 3hp static converter i run my lathe with, and now have the 1.5hp lathe motor running with much closer to true 3 phase 220 power instead of the weak third leg provided by the cheaper static converter.

220 3 phase to feed the 440 transformer to power the drill and anything else i decided to pick up later.

if i need to go bigger later, the transformer should hold a 10hp converter no problem.  (dont quite understand or care about the power factors and efficiencies at play here in the math)  15kva should be way over kill.

i might need some google fu or some actual help to get it up and running but i think all the bits are there.  need to decided if i want to put it down stairs or upstairs.  its a 310lb chunk of copper i would like not to walk away so maybe some locks on the milk house downstairs soon might be a good idea.

have to decided if i want to feed from my sub panel or the main panel in the barn also.

That thing converts single phase to triple phase?

Many industrial hard drive shredders are triple phase,  I wonder if that'd work in that scenario.   GA Power wanted multi-thousands of $ to have triple phase power fed to our warehouse...

You can convert single phase to three phase by using a phase converter or a variable frequency drive.

my understanding is all depends on how much power you need.  running my 1.5hp 3 phase lathe was easy with a "static converter"  that provides a weak / fake 3rd leg but works great on rotating machinery like mills/lathes/compressors for a cheap solution, but you do loose about ~1/3 the HP of the motor running it this way.  i think my 3hp static converter was like 60$ on ebay.    edit:  i guess its 225$ now the one i have:  https://www.ebay.com/itm/251081245073?ViewItem=&item=251081245073&ssPageName=ADME:L:OU:US:1120

rotary phase converters use an idler motor.  literally a motor running with nothing connected to it generating the 3 phase as it runs.  can be home made, or auto systems can be bought starting around 3-500$ and go up with power increase.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/American-Rotary-Phase-Converter-AR5-5-HP-1-to-3-Three-PH-Made-is-USA/281095520874?hash=item417299426a:g:IkUAAOxybi9RcwrJ

of course having the power company provide the correct power is the most efficient way, but depending on loads there are other options.

the big box is the second part i need after the converted 3 phase 220 power to step up to 440v.  my drill press cant be wired down to 220 as far as i can see and a lot of older machines are 440 3 phase.

shit is heavy. muscled around iron tonight after sick of rotten customer work this morning.  Lathe repositioned and new drill press in place.  rotary brain box mounted.  need to run some wire and mount the 5hp idler, then hook up the transformer for 440v.  getting there!  enjoyed tee shirt weather from erics waste oil tonight!  all gone!

success!  and i did not die either.

drill press has a high gear and low gear, with about 5 different selections for the 2 speeds.  seems to function perfectly.

Lathe happy with rotary 3 phase 220 also, cleaned up some sketch wiring and install is pretty clean all metal conduit.

pretty slick setup, i can turn the phase converter on with a remote box thats on my lathe, or the panel box behind the drill press.

there is an X0 terminal i guess is a neutral on the transformer?  not sure i need that.  also not sure if anything in the transformer needs to be grounded.   google said no grounds needed?  i tied the 220 and 440 ground together which goes back to sub panel ground bar.

From what I can gather here, that is correct.
