Most of it will clean up w water pressure. Some will require some scrubbing. The chrome is pitted in places but overall once washed I bet it'll look not bad.

I kinda want to drive it to delta sonic as-is :)

What's a running 4.2 worth to your guy, Ryan? I think making this a non-driver before I've collected any parts for a tdi or LS or any other swap is folly, and I'd need healthy motivation...

I was thinking that pressurizing the tank with the fuel pump disconnected would be the easiest route too. Not sure if there's a pickup sock/prefilter in the tank that I might be clogging via that method. I kinda doubt it but don't know.

Oh, or I could run a line out the filler neck. Duh.

Pressure in, gas out. No need to run through the fuel system at all.

right so after you flush out all the fuel the wrong way you and fill it up with gas you find your tank is full of shit, plugged, and fresh fuel you have to take all out again.  :)

Well if the tank really is full of shit, there's only so much that would be washed out with the fuel anyway regardless of exit path

It may need to bet dropped anyway. Either for full clean out to go diesel or just for a shot sending unit - unless it really is near empty.

Gas gauge works. Has a quarter tank of premium in it now and a half a can of Seafoam.

I couldn't get any old stuff out, it was near bone dry. I didn't bother to blow it through the feed line.

It will catch and fire off gas but not quite actually run on its own. Could need plugs cap and rotor. Could be timed a bit off plus bad fuel. Could be carb is gunky.

All sounds completely right when cranking but I want to hear it really run, and see that the trans is good too. I did make a note it was JUST over the full mark on oil when I started, I should check that again. Would be sad to wipe out bearings.

change oil FWIW..
fill with 5-10 of good gas
fuel filter is right @ engine.. easy to swap..

clean plugs.. don't bother replace.. same with cap and rotor..

there not land rover engines.. but 258's will run as long as there is compression..  ive seen some that run without too..

Smike used to have one of those (without compression) :)

I'll clean stuff... I could certainly buy weak spark as a cause with crappy gas and questionable crb tune too

tried to get this fired again tonight. failed again.

when I first hit it, it ran for half a second and died, would not refire.  I bypassed the ECM and it will now nearly fire consistently so that's probably shot. I pulled the stepper motor off the Carter BBD carb and ran the needles all the way out as suggested, but it's possible it would need further turning from there. Tried to pull the cap to look at the rotor and can't get the more difficult rear screw to break free. Turns over a little slowly with MUCH electrical load (judging from cable heat and interior lights going almost completely out even with battery charger connected on 'start'), seems the engine doesn't turn over well/ starter issues/ something.  I pulled the easy belt and the AC and alt spin freely. Would have to be water pump or PS pump if it's accessory related.

Will probably pull the other belt and check that out next and I expect to find no issues.

Haven't pulled plugs yet, that's probably after to see how it spins with no compression.

Don't want to pull a starter on a CAR that I can't drive up onto ramps, but that may be something to do too after that.

I should check the oil for fuel again, haven't done that lately.
starting fluid doesn't help it out.
Tried it again just now after a good 2 hour cool down and it was still a little sluggish cranking. It's right about at that speed where you start to worry about things not starting.

I tried quick OMW to work, it cranked fast and damn near (again) started. I think the starter is weak and excessively prone to heat soak or has an internal issue causing overheat and poor performance.
