Just thinking aloud....
if i get two fabricated 9 housings one off set to the left and one off set to the right, i can build any off set diff car, front or rear engine, passenger diffs or driver diffs on both sides.... hmmm
-
offsetting both diffs?
isn't the 9" pattern reversible, too, so there is no right or left drop, just an offset (ignoring drain and fill holes I guess)
-
thats what im forgetting, if the pattern is flippable, ill have to look into that.
big choice is going to be spendy light 9's or do 14's i have to do some reading on both, but one will happen.
ya i was thinking pass diffs but after Ryans comment nothing says i couldnt flip the other 60 i have, weld on solid C's corrected and run it. new car will stay 4.10s in 1:2 70-80mph is plenty fast in the rocks :)
-
lots of load on 4.10s apparently? can't believe Rywan's broke.
-
The TrueHi9 is one I always thought looked damn good. Prices are rough though as expected.
-
I would never ever run a hi-9. ever.
debatable reliability issues and SHIT support issues.
-
With some shock tuning and good steering I don't think it would be too used up and would be a top contender. You can really drive these days, no doubt about it.
So am I fired? :)
571 might do the last RCrocs race with the motor as is. im not going to put another one in it right now.
you are fired for 572. :'(
plan to start bending tube in 2 weeks or so. Time to build the car i should have built, the way i should have built it.
-
I would never ever run a hi-9. ever.
debatable reliability issues and SHIT support issues.
Really? I must be reading the wrong stuff... whoops
-
IDK, its all about the Benjamins. ;D
Rausch style racing, would the 14b hold up better than the fabricated housings?
-
if i was going to run 9's id run the kind you find in junk yards, and have 2 spares. if it really was an issue, id get rid of them.
my thought with running the 14's the wrong- it way would be as strong if not stronger than a 60
-
unsprung weight is the biggest performance killer in high speed and in "rock bouncing"
going 9's would be a huge weight benefit taking a ton off the car
-
6.0 motor? 4L80E?
-
Fancy hubs can save almost as much as the housing, but seems silly to put bling hubs on a junkyard lump.
-
Just out of curiosity, anyone running rcv's in ultra4? Glanced at my "rock bouncing" calender on the wall... 99% of those guys have em. Carrying entire spares (if you managed to break one) would obviously be next to impossible though.
-
another 5.3, and a BUILT th400 will be my flavor in the new car.
i dont need any more power than i have now, ill keep my yukon super shafts and make them stronger with a lighter car.
-
some do run them, but it seems most don't break chromo 60 shafts to begin with.
-
if you really wanted to win a race you would just buy a retired campbell chassis, duh
-
why buy when i could copy in 3 days
ryans chassis is scary close to what i copied except what he asked to be changed.
the #8 car is what ill copy. more than enough in one of the crawl writups to knock it out.
-
Shrong!!
-
may/june 2011 crawl has stupid info on it. easy.
-
this one?
-
linky? google-fu is failing me, "8" is hard to search for.
-
that seems likely, way to do better than I Troyer!
-
That's Nicks that was at SEMA ? It is nice, small and light looking.
-
I think that's the SFA car Shannon won in that Nick races now. Where's Racerpedia when we need him??
-
yes, thats it
#8 car
112" wheel base
158" overall length
65" tall
18" belly
80" track
3300 lbs
510hp
36x19 ron davis dual pass
9's and 40s under it
2" main chassis, 1.75 else where
-
i started with #8 then googled ultra 4 #8 car
-
interesting how different the results are for that than they were for "ultra4 car 8"
-
get off your mice guys and build some fucking race cars
:o
8)
-
i would but im waiting on a guy who cant make up his mind if he's gonna sell his c/o's or not
-
if that guy is me you are shit out of luck. they are jack stands under scrap as far as i am concerned. New Co's are going under new car.
-
OK, so im waiting for a guy to sell me his jackstands then
-
just talk to ryan for new shit, mine are worth a grand as is. thats it
-
I pay scrap prices...
-

-
you told me at the RCQ that 9s were garbage?
-
they are, and id be kicking my self with them.... but still have decisions to make.
-
14b front and rear.
-
my opinions on the 14b aren't what they once were after talking axles with Startzel at EMS. Their track record surely is what it is though.
the points of interest, articulated poorly compared to a guy who lives and breathes axles.
- the 3rd bearing is a pure bandaid. the first 14b didn't have it and wasted pinion bearings constantly because the spacing is simply too close
- the 3rd bearing is usually hosed when a 14b is torn down. It's undersized for the job required of it
He strongly prefers a Dana 70 center section. In my eyes you surely can't beat a 14b for ease of setup among the big boy axles, and as I said their track record really really doesn't suck - they're just really not actually the holy grail, unfortunately.
-
i have take 3 well used street truck14 bolts apart and everything in them looked brand new. I guess if i cared id take the buggy rear apart because i dont think we know ANYONE in our extended circle that has used one harder than I in the last 2 years.
-
Is that the front rear or the rear rear??? :P
-
true that. I'd be interested. It would be an interesting conversation for the next time I'm at EMS too - and then maybe I'd get to put the 14b back to holy grail status :)
-
back rear
-
why are you considering new axles, the ones you have ,have never let you down other than the knuckles of coarse
-
everything is rapped and wrong
-
Going to make a stereotypical custom 8 into 1 collector for this rear engine high horsepower hawg? ;D
-
ear plugs are defiantly on the race prep list :)
i actually almost just started on the sub tonight. but grabbed some paper and my key board to work some details out.
-
i cant find anything bigger than like a 27"x15" core radiator thats off the shelf
any other places than summit and speedway?
-

Try searching NASCAR radiators

Some 36"x19" here

-
that looks awful big, random, and fragile
-
Those knuckles do not look schrong
-
Hope they're only half done.
-
Apparently noone read the build?
-
Heck no we just look at pictures
-
Seriously who has time for that
-
50$ from J&J added a ton of things to the parts pile for the new car
-
The Guy who had a random day off and drank most of his breakfast and lunch apparently .....lol. He had tons of gussets on top of that pic. That was just the placement steel. Still not sold, it was ridiculously huge and barely fit in a 22.5 rim but looked shronger than that pic.
-
Smike took 50 bucks out of a wad of money and told dude it was all he had lol
-
That's funny
-

true story
-

I guess I made my point. I would not take the time to build some crazy front one of a kind axle only to have it break.
The only weakness I see left in a HP60 is the Ring and Pinion. Replacement parts are off the shelf.
-
Smike took 50 bucks out of a wad of money and told dude it was all he had lol
ive learned at j&j just hand smike some money and sit back and let him do ALL the talkin
-
Bargain hard there, and start at half what you'd feel good paying. Sometimes they'll just take it.
-
Well this is no good. I appear to not want smike to have an LM7. I didn't see that this oil pan has a small crack nor make sure it spun. Which it doesn't. Fuck me.
Guess I've gotten too used to just being a transporter.
-
I cant get this thing to turn over, it is seized
there is oil / sand / sludge behind the throttle blade
the oil pan is clearly cracked where the oil filter is crushed from some sort of impact
the main crank / balance pulley has been destroyed with a gear puller of some sort and appears to have been re assembled- its hosed.
one of the idler pulleys and stud is missing
the starter motor and nurl bolts are missing
4 coil pack to plug wires are missing
cut wires on harness plugs, but i guess that was shown in pics
missing alternator as advertised
4 broken bolts in driver head as advertised
-
sounds like a good core motor...
want to order a reman?
-
if i wanted to spend 5 times $$ id go with a different platform.
its just so annoying to be nickle and dimed with all the little stuff. Even if i had a crate motor sitting in front of me, it would be twice what i just paid for this hunk to make it "Complete"
99' 5.3 LM7
i am guessing somewhere around 1800$ for a short block, 3000 for a long block, and 5K for a complete crate to drop in and bolt up no issues.
That's also leaving out EMS
-
I'm sure core charge is more, but $600 for a "core" condition motor is pretty shitty too.
For the absolutely no good it does, I'm sorry I didn't do a thorough inspection. .
-
gimme year make and model for shits and giggles..
-
doesnt one of the express vans I have have this motor in it?
-
99' chevy 1500 5.3 is what my ECM is flashed to run stand alone.
Not sure if express motors are 5.3 or 6.0
i was hoping for simplicity to stay with the same 5.3 platform for the new car since they appear to grow on ebay trees.
-
what are the year and model of the express vans, looks like a lot of them come with the 4.8l V8
-
Someone was telling me good things about the 4.8. Jake, come to think of it. His drag racer buddies build from them, saying they're stouter than the 5.3.
-
WTF? Getting your money back I assume?
-
Where is the link to the thread where smike calls the guy a summmm beach!??!
-
"I have never fired the motor but it is free, and there is no doubt in my mind it runs, motor is "as is".
"
he obviously lied but you know where he lives so lets go lynch his ass
-

Engine Series V-8 5.3L
Fuel Type Gasoline
-
already talked to the guy its going back 6/21
nothing i can do with it
-
2003–2007 Chevrolet Express/GMC Savana is the right LM7 block
what do you have arie? any thing wrecked? or running with a good 2wd trans?
-
worht taking a look at..
UCI Norfolks van... hit a deer i think... rad smashed engine looks good from what i have seen...
still all there..

good
-
6-lug on the 2500, seems odd.
Something is different with van motors, maybe just wiring could be intake differences, not sure more research needed.
-
6 lug is weird.
Oil sump is sometimes different. And on second look I remember that one. Rad is pushed back pretty hard, I'd double check accessory brackets but I think it's okay.
-
its a LM7 motor...
if it runs you can pay me something for it..
if not just wasted some time..
-
idea on miles?
motor and trans were probably functional if it wrecked, or was it driven into the ground after it was wrecked?
Ill make the whole van go away if you want
-
high miles...
but deff driving... only reason took off the road was due to the hit..
I can have mile bring the van down to you
-
2003 Express van, with a 5.3L engine and 4L60-E transmission. Probably should build a TH400 or get a 4l80E
I am game Arie, but id really have to know the financials on the complete van whether its a $3500 as is pile or its a 800$ as is pile....
-
deff the later of the 2 numbers would be just fine...
title included... so the scrappers are happy...
I just want to make sure its a runner before anything else..
your money is no good to me/Hahn unless its for something worth money..
-
is this thing local? If mike could drop it, awesome.
-
@ carter...
whenever mike can grab it is ok with me...
my MJ and CJ just need to catch the ride up....
WOW ... you really dont get emails
@ work.... I would hate to work in a dead zone..
-
gmail goes to my phone, i dont carry my phone at work for many reasons. gotcha.
ya ill take it if it runs and shifts

Everybody loves a VAN MOTOR!
94 is useless to me as a Dakota spare. OBD I. Otherwise coulda been a good trade for Express parts.
-
Mike.. the willys is done
want to do a carter run today and bring smike back the 2003?
-
That van should have 16" rims, and 6 lug. hmmm
trailer rim upgrade as well....
-
Mike.. the willys is done
want to do a carter run today and bring smike back the 2003?
gotta be after work
Trade for some lights? I need to make a list. It's short.
-
i find it funny you guys think i dont have 3 ways already planned to make money on anything i buy or scrap, as plan B
it leads me to believe that i am just better at this game then some of you. haha
No the link was not for a dakota spare, and 16" 6 lug rums off the van if it shows up are already spoken for.
-
Mike.. the willys is done

I can leave keys for Van @ scottys with willys and MJ keys
I dont mind them sitting outside overnight.. ill just move them inside in the AM
-
im going to be doing some manual labor acorss the street...
so if you need me or want to finalize a place shoot me a text or email
-
ill be in the shop tonight finishing up a skid
-
this van in the dark looks like its got some good potential
-
its a VA vehicle.. so the nasty should be minimal..
I know the repair estimate was for body work...(just looked at the file)
-
ya there is 4 grand easy i bet to make this thing a usable fragel van with all the doors, bumpers, front end F'd
ill drag it in the shop tonight and see if i can get it running and then go from there.
-
drove the 03 express van into the shop tonight, she is a 256K machine!
shame to cut her up its in descent shape.
what is the status of the title arie? available to put her back on the road?
lots o lights on the dash, gona hook up a tech2 before i go through pulling it.
trans looks coco puff fluid, motor seems to have no bad noises though
-
clean and clear....
I dont think its worth a flip if thats what your thinking
-
I foresee a knocking 5.3 swap into the van and a for sale sign in the window... ;D
-
Me and troy came to the conclusion that the knocking is in smikes head
-
i concur with dr. nick
-
i put it in gear to swap bays its like a snare drum
-
hmm.. snare is usually a bad lifter,
Timpani is usually a knock
;D
-
Run it until it blows.
-
build a new buggy mikemike wants to drive the old one till its gone
-
mike mike will have to run alot of mazda3's to get into the driver seat
-
It could be a rental, Mike, Matt, ALex, or anyone could rent it for a race. Hahahahahah
-
572 trailer?
-
Rental with 12k deposit, and 3K prep fee, sure
-
more to the pile....

-
that cant be all of a $900 order, wheres the rest of it
-
check your math there troy, that is all of it.
lots o 1.25" heims adds up quick.
-
oooo, shiney! :)
-
I'm gone most of this week if you wanted to meet up for paperwork.. I know you work fast.. Didn't want a hulk sitting there longer then my MJ
-
ill probably pull the motor out next week. seems to run fine. ill part a few things out. Dont really need paper work, but sure. whats left will end cut up in the back of a pickup.
-
i need to take some time to get over to M4 and see whats a brewing.
-
express van cut up, monday will be a scrap day!
-

not running a sway bar
not running a spare tire
-
No spare tire? Are you planning to.just drive back to the pits on a whooped tire?
-
8:1? I'm not rec wheeling with this pile ;)
-
I think you need to run a sway bar and shorter shocks, at least on the rear trailing arms.
-
trophy truck style
i am with MaxD on swaybars
-
stage 8's for a 60 are now 62$ a side, dam
-
reached out to a few custom radiator manufactures today, see how that goes.
trying to get a 36x20x4 built
-
how close to a stock 2nd gen Cummins 4 core is that? seems near-ish but the Mopar part may be taller
-
spare oil pan $60 OBO; kanukistan
http://throttlehappy.invisionzone.com/index.php?showtopic=3914&pid=26495&st=0&#entry26495
-
also noted the other motor broke free and supposedly looks good
http://www.rc4x4.org/rcforum/index.php?topic=17128.0
-
didn't you get that motor for 600? he relisted it & upped the price?
interesting
-
Had to spend to get the pan fixed I guess? Hah
-
you never get what you ask, and if you do its more than you needed to sell it for.
an alternator and serp belt appeared also.
-
(http://sphotos.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-prn1/552472_3126844424609_1823347501_n.jpg)
-
Those pivots are above centerline and I don't see anything else holding the link upright. that's a lot of effort put forth to have floppy links poor control and be beating the shit out of the shock eyes.
FAIL.
-
Same problem here?
-
No. Draw a line between the centerline of the link joints. Shock bolts should be at or below that line. Fist pic are WELL above, second look same or lower.
-
pics blocked
-
http://albany.craigslist.org/boa/3143027373.html not color but a good unit and a good price.
-
i really just need to commit to my summit cart and start building this thing. killing me this week, going back and fourth. i am at the breaking point of parts on the shelf already absorbed cost that would make 571 just about where it should be to kick ass, or start over and doo it ALLL right HD shrong single suicide style
-
Take the winter and do it slow?
-
doing things slow just takes up space and costs me money

-
I think you are missing some tires
-
missing a few things. really going to be hard to keep the wheelbase i wanted with a 205 if i go modern trans a th350 old school short tail again would help, or a mated case which i really dont want to do.
front shaft will be short, rear three link will be tight, not nearly enough room for a cell and tire like i thought with most similar buggies i have seen.
-
ifs front would fix a bunch of things haha
-
It always does.
AMC had the right idea with the Eagle!
-
maybe trying to shoot for a 110 wheelbase is not the right idea
-
get yourself a land rover chassis.... ;)
-
those tin cans wouldnt last 5 minutes the way i drive 8)
-
sounds like you need an eagle with LS1 :D
-
i would build an s10 or other mini truck on like 34's be fun for line mountain, and be fun for regular wheeling trips when we are more tj/35's group
-
You might have to put a little though into where you are about to go... ;D
-
no thought just put a winch on the back too
-
i think i am going to go build a sub for this guy, F it. no customer work that i have unconsciously pushed off till Friday, and next week.
-
m4 fab has begun

-
That racing seat is 8)
-
3 or 4 link front and rear?
-
rear three, i was also thinking front 3, but i will see how it lays out. have materials for either on the self.
-
I don't see a seat for the guy that watches the guages...
-
your observation is correct.
-
man i burned the shit out of my right arm last night welding up the sub on this guy. to hot and didn't put the welding jacket on, stupid.
-
You are the man!
-
god i love fresh metal yesssss

-
is that the belly ? did you build your jig table at ride height?
-
that is the belly, table is higher than ride height.
-
tonight's progress:

-
cool. how big is the "foot print" of that belly.
I ask because i was shocked how much damage the belly of my buggy took.
I think low slug, lighter material and having a lot of belly surface area was the issue.
-
Seems.... interesting.
-
someones sore about getting fired :P
-
ya the front "foot print" i am not real crazy, but it kinda just ended up where it would be. keeping room for the front shaft, 36" ish links, and petals will be forward of the front sub. it will start to come together when tube gets bent, it may get changed a little, but its a start to get the drive train mounted up.
-
tall motor mounts will of course have a ton of tie in when tube starts to get run. it has some CJ upper 250 wall links it it. Motor mounts are all 3/8" plate and tabs shrong. 3" bushings. i should get a seat before i mount the trans and case.
-
Sub seems ridiculously huge for its height on the chassis at this stage is what I'm thinking.
-
i guess i disagree, look how "big" Atom was this is smaller.
WB is longer than i wanted but most cars are actually 120-125 these days
-
That is the bottom of the car, right. Not an actual subframe. Its like Atom was, not like yours and mine are now. That square is the from itself.
-

I would say its both.
Im just hypersensitive to belly size. :)
Im rebuilding mine like a battle ship!

-
yes, that is the bottom on the car!
-
shit is getting real now! time to order parts, i crossed the line tonight!

-
looks sweet..
-
a couple lines will change a little, but i think thats the general idea. Built around radiator fitting between the double pillars. Looks like everything is laying out pretty good. probably gona change the A pillar angle, i was trying to follow the campbell#8 car at that point, but i seem to have ended up with a huge window net opening again...
-
Done by tomorrow's meeting? ;D
-
That looks nice.
-
I like the lines of this car. Clean and simple.
Question. Why are the main hoops not complete single tubes?
-
NM. i figured your going front to back not side to side.
-
ordered last night:
seat
cell
harness
gages / tach
power panel
disconnect
oil pressure shutoff
push button starter switches / horn
header gaskets
misc wmall ruff stuff order placed
-
more tube ran tonight, on hold till parts come in and customer work complete
-
i talked to my boy Kalvin at PSC and he said they ran that radiator for KOH, and one other short course race. only pulled it to swap for one that had an oil cooler in it. hmmmm
-
Race-proven...
Like "slightly used" or "road-tested", only not. :P
-
and yes the gob a JB weld was repaired 2 days before KOH haha, no thanks
this look pretty awesome, the google said nascar demo cars

huge oil cooler, nice radiator
-
dual AN-12 sounds like nothing your motor wants to talk to without either hack or decent expense.
-
thought AN12 sounded small... easy to adapt

I can't find any used nascar pumper stuff on eBay.
-

-
I looked for a while. Guess I don't have master searching skills.

Funny how this hobby always has you wanting more...
-
Oh no
-
its a disease.
-
this build has me looking at KAYAKs and soft sided cooler. Looks great
-
i have built kayaks before, and i own a soft cooler. although it has been in the back of my truck for 6weeks with god knows what in it.

Funny how this hobby always has you wanting more...
A rear engine jeep willys pickup themed buggy similar to Shannon campbell's ttc buggy would be a sweet machine!

full credit back, radiator sent back

Glad he was a good seller

sold last of express van parts today, 300$ for tires 8)
-
i assume you are going with a 14b, but i know you talked about 9s at one point. good deal for a rear housing
http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/axles-tires-wheels-sale/1075132-ruff-stuff-specialties-full-float-9-rear-end.html
-
man so many choices, interco makes a 42.5" sticky bogger on 17" now
that could be a sweet tire
-
boggers never sidehill well, not sure how a sticky with deep tread would deal with being cut up for some lateral grip.
-
Rockers work well. Just look at Jeff, he would be lost without them. ;D
-
that true kids... Save your money for good rockers, put them on a hay wagon w/ a tow motor engine and beat $20K rigs in the rocks all day long.
-
3 wheel drive too
-
shop re organised for chassis fab.
pulled the lift out for a couple weeks.
got the left side roof line tube done tonight. she is tricky. finish up the driver side and it will fly after that.
-
tonight's progress. looks like a car now. i liiiiike it. 8)

-
ls flanges on the way, i thought i drunken ordered them last week, guess not. 2 other ebay auctions didnt ship. nice. thanks sticks
-
doing work.

-
look good
-
you need to make a sign and lay it on the motor that says.. "YES THE MOTOR IS SUPPOSED TO BE BACKWARDS!".. maybe that will stop all of the stupid comments on FB each time you post a picture...
-
they are just scared
-
Looks like your welder cart tire needs a little Slime.
571 is cool and all, but I really like the look of this one so far.
-
the welder cart is just aired down for flex, aired down via 1/2 hole
15' mig lead makes the welder not really move anyway :)
-
i cant believe how fast i can lay tube now with the plasma templates i am making as i go.
im going to make like 10 of them with different notch angles.
-
The problem with the welding cart is the front tires bind up and hit each other as soon as you try and turn it. :)
-
i cant believe how fast i can lay tube now with the plasma templates i am making as i go.
im going to make like 10 of them with different notch angles.
So, no official tubing notcher, just your plasma? Smart!
-
Good to see some work being done on it.
What is ride height going to be comparied to the table?
-
on the table its about 6" taller than ride height
-
more work, going slow. Copying chassis is much easier than doing your own thing.
packaging sucks. the rear axle links / pan bar / bumps / coil overs / sway bar / truss have to fit into like a 10" x 10" home....!

-
I love the wrap on that gusset/shock mount! Sweet!
-
Motor is never coming out? Hole looks small.
-
hole is small, motor can come out. This car is build on Easy trans pull out, Pain in the dick motor pull out.
i have been battling on how the fuel cell will come out... even in Fab stage.
looking like a high sway bar like the jimmys cars run, if one at all
-
Makes sense. And it is looking real good back there.
-
I like those link mounts
-
http://rochester.craigslist.org/pts/3349761805.html
-
With discs. Good deal especially if it has 4.10s
-
205s are so gawd dam heavy. F me
-
Case is mounted. Runing out of the easy things to do...
-
pics?

day 8

-
rethinking the cell placement for weight transfer and spare tire. its just not working in the back to support the rear coil mounts, and there is a TON of room behind the driver seat.
Tight up front, but workable.
-
no progress last night. got home, went to sleep. woke up to eat, went back to sleep.
ha, felt awesome this morning.
-
petals started, momemtum of this build is slowWing down.
have to put the lift back in soon to knock out a few customer trucks, bah!
-
man if i could find a 14" tall 32 gallon cell id be happier than shit. seems they just dont make them bah!
-
i need this cell
http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Jaz-32-Gallon-Polyethylene-Street-Racing-Fuel-Cell-Tank-w-Cap-33-x-17-x-14-/380485635593?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item5896b60e09&vxp=mtr
but in a steel thing
-
and im not paying a 1k$ for this, the only one i have found

orbital on the way for this guy, ebay special
-
more ebay placed
summit order placed
o my
-
cell
column
wheel
quick release
padding
driverside net
stage 8's for the 60
-
crazy, the orbital i got is vac packed with new fitings, and PSC numbers on the bags. looks never opened. 100$ score.
-
thats an awesome deal
-
Damn
-
Woah! Scoreee
-
hope its useful, it was so cheap i didnt look at the specs really too carful, but its the "middle" size PSC sells so what could possibly go wrong
-
column and quick release came yesterday
cell came today, fits good. ill make up an enclosure
-
blem boggers say 18" wide, site for regular says only 19" wide
hmmm
145lb tire
-
Mine are 18"
But they are also 11 years old.
But I've never seen them listed at 19" wide in any catalog.
And they actually measure aprox 15"
-
yours are 39's also
these are 44's
-
Ummm. They are 39.5 to be exact. :P
I found the 4 wheel parts listing for boogers 44's are listed as 19.5"
-
Mike and I made an Enclosure for the new cell today after fixing my cum apart

-
hahaha, fixing what??
-
Dodge blew water pump yesterday, Cummins Came apart
-
Much clearer, thanks. ;D
-
looks like it should do nicely.
is there a specific gauge the enclosure needs to be for KOH or Ultra 4?
oh and I see why you guys have limited RACE FUNDS...
stop spending so much money on all that high quality beer!
-
i read somewhere 20g minimum. thats what i did. its the same as both my RCI cells i have
-
Empty shop today with just this guy. Beat the 14 into submission. Finished the fuel cell enclosure.
-
cut some tube out of the back, and added to the sub some for the new cell.
looking good.
-
rear link mounts are looking shrong
also for reference

-
rear axle has disks and calipers on it
-
C's pulled from axle
nothing less than FUCK ME
that was beyond painful.
-
Did the porta-ram make an appearance.?
-
my porta ram is gay. it leaks
used matts 12ton bottle jack inside the pumpkin
-
Fancy
-
I made a compromise. It will be fine.
-
day 10 this hog is rear linked
-
talked to one of the motor guys at work today- he is buying all the software and hardware to burn the new GM computers- no more sending to LT1 guy any more :)
-
nice!
-
started hacking shit and making stuff work.
got the rear axle figured out. its 3 linked, and will have provisions for bumps and sway bar. not an easy feat with space with links, track bar, and coils in the way.....

-
Awesome
-
more work today
rear STILL coming along. close to bumps and finish up rear of chassis.
should probably have a radiator by now. time to start shopping again.

-
I didn't realize it until now. You are driving from the right side of the buggie? Little european in you coming out?
-
just UK... rest of Europe is LHD..
only countries that are left hand traffic were old British colonies...
something to do with knights and the side of the road your sword was on ?!?!
-
I always wondered why! 8)
-
it just worked, and why not- not like there are any rules to these things.
it all goes back to having "stock" axles and ease of replacement components.... they are just upside down :)
-
deal pending on a new motor for this guy. i think im going to build another TH350 for this guy, and move the motor back 4" and the Case back 10" wheel base is out of hand with the 4l60 being so long
-

-

-
Little grooving and they'll be groovy!

Fucker
-
The one from Flx? Damn

-
Pictures would have saved you 3 hours. ;D

I'm still hung up on the boggers ! ??? :o
X2
Didn't like mine.
-
I love what you can do with such a crazy canvas though...
Is that a Rockwell with ball joint 60 C's???
-
Wasn't even looking at that...wow!
-
race at RC and 5/6 races you might give boggers a second chance.
-
race at RC and 5/6 races you might give boggers a second chance.
I always thought of Boggers as being heavy and sloppy.
But I know they work...
And stepping up to 44" are you going to need deeper gearing?
-
ill take HP and an 800$ trans cooler over gears anyday :)
-
a 2500$ pallet of Solid goodness is coming for Matt and I!
-
I think they make a "sticky" bogger now too.
-
im gona take some time away from stickies- they seem really annoying other than a hot dry day they are stupid awesome. not the best RC tire. Needs lots of HP to warm them up and by that time 10% of them are gone.
i couldnt believe what a virgina trip did to a brand new set of stickies.
-
Im the perfect spokes person for Boggers.
Groove them and Run them at 2-3 psi for rec wheeling.
Air them up to 10-15 for racing. Maybe more as they break in.
Indestructible.
Best quality tire I've ever owned, and im 3rd owner.
Sure they are prob obnoxiously out of balance but then again what tire wouldn't be after a race at RC?
U gonna need gears though! :P

Smike, 1:56 is where you come in!
-
They are ugly lol, but I can't think of many times I've seen The cj buggy turned down!
swampers only get better with age :)
-
my swampers are showing their age. i think they need a groover soon to sharpen up some blocks. they have aweseome tread they are just worn out.
-
i have the $50 groover. its ok. 1hr per tire.
the expensive ones look way nice.
-
1hr per tire
On a 34" tire haha
-
that's a great downfall vid. hahaha
looks like it fell off the trailer on the way there! great
-
link was broken this morning for me, didnt see it

Wow. That's not bad if they are 60's.
-
They are.
That's Randy that owned United 4wd. That business is closed and that's the end of his inventory.
I spoke to Matt that use to work there to check for myself.
-
From $300 to $600, complete axles will be more int he $600 range I bet,
-
Hmmm. I'm am free this weekend...
-
Smike did your tires show uP yet?
-
Some of those axles are ball joint unit bearing style. I assume newer dodge axles.
-
i see 3 ford axles.
2 bj on far right and far left
1 kp 3rd visible from right.
-
i slacked- 44 boggers are gone.

Your going to need 44+ tires to rock that WB. :)
-
ya i was looking at my options. i could knock about 3" out of the rear with two tubs changed that mount the bumps, and i could probably pull 2" out of the front.
even move the motor back 4", change to TH350 or 400, and move the case back 10" total, cut the front sub out, Bah!
-
the limo!!!
-
120" on 571 has never bothered me
-
my butt will feel like its in a 90" car, massive tree bars and HP will take care of the rest
-
But your belly height is really good so you might be Ok with that WB
Your turning radius might suck...
-
RCV's are in
-
ooOOooo :)
-
tires should be here today or tomorrow
-
sweet let me know when and where to meet up to grab both with the truck
-
tires are in
-
tires look good!
-
opened up on of the RCV boxes to find a nice little disclaimer
no spools or welded diffs
no tires above 47"
cant find this on there site at all... awesome...
-
80 miles away... fawk guy will take 500 for the set.
http://syracuse.craigslist.org/pts/3681962192.html
-
I almost asked if they were for sure king pin, but that's not a Chevy question to ask, is it?
I wonder how far out of my way it would be to take 81 to 90 instead of 15 to 390 on Sunday.
-
If he has a way to load them into my utility trailer, I can retrieve them for you. Just not willing to sacrifice my spine...
Need to know before the bank closes.
-
yes he can load
kingpin SRW 4.10 chevy
Mark are you on your way back or something?
address is 3869 floridaville rd Cato NY 13033
-
On leave today. Just cooling my heels...
On my way to the bank.
-

-
Let me get them here first. Has he been answering texts or did you call?
-

how far is it for you? i can bring out those springs or what else do you need? haha Sunday or next week would work for me to grab them.
-
40 miles. Just got a reply back from him. Heading out now.
They can sit here until you are ready for them.
-
cool!

kingpin, 60 / 14 SRW (no dually hub crap!). said complete minus one lockout is missing / broken
500$
-
Crap...we were just up there. Could have saved Mark a run.
-
Thanks Mark for the delivery!
My luck its a dodge 60 and not a Chevy. Hopefully I can move it.
-

Front of this car looks like a space ship. I am rocking it. Looks fawsome with 42" profenders on it. I real sorry who ever has to lift this front axle or who gets hit with it.
-
255$ to the bolt bin after I was short some 5/8" washers last night.
-
needs steering tie rods, 2 front coils installed, tacks inspected / added, tires mounted to wheels Matts bringing tomorrow and this guy is a roller.....

-
Might need a front bumper for some logging.
-
Ya, its fins get a hoop to protect the trackbar. I hadent planed on it being in front like that but it will work
-
Oooo, put a huge stinger on there! :P
-
On tires inbetween the lift!
-
;D
-
car looks plain hot from all directions :)
Took 3" out of the wheel base, down to 124" now- tolerable. gona order some 2" wheel spacers, should look awesome with 42' / 44"s, but tolerable with the KRTs.
its a full welded suspention roller, moved back over to its bay, shop cleaned, matts on the table. Lift bay open for stupid jeeps ::)
-
new wheel, clamps, and ujoints ordered from summit
new 5.38 ring gear ordered from mudflaps.com 165$ lol PORC has changed names- who knew!
-
that's PORC?? they have one of the best prices on my airbag.
-
jeff showed me some pics. buggy is looking good!
124" WB on 42 or 44 would be perfect. low and long.
-
mounted a winch last night
cut 5" out of the ass of the chassis, re mounted bumps and rear track bar. 2 square tubes need to be rerun for rear driveshaft home, but she is good and i am happy with the wheelbase and stance.
-
I'm glad you were able to shorten it up a bit.
-
Sounds like it's close to Big Dogs ready!
-
not that close, but a couple weeks it will be making noise
-
first ever one shot gear setup
new 5.38 gear set
carrier, ring gear spacer, diff, miss matched races i found somewhere
slapped 4 shims on pinion, bolted in. preload mint
put diff in, back lash mint

radiator shroud done
Fan mounted
Radiator mounted in car
after the 4th one of these, i finally got it figured out how to do it with my piss poor non box break with the least amount of bushmechanicry.

-
fan shroud bolted to radiator mount
more front chassis tubes in
front air bumps in minus supports
rear sub of chassis cut and changed up for more rear shaft room
punch list on the wall. this is day 3 of pretty good progress on this guy in a long time. hoping to keep it going this weekend and get her full welded and ready for rear shaft / wire / plumb by sunday.

Are you shooting for shakedown at RC 6/22?
-
Probably a streatch, but there is a car show at work 6/27
-
on the lookout for a set of cheap non chrome ls headers

-
213$ headers ordered that im just going to cut in half lol :o
oil cooler adaptor and LONG throttle cable ordered.
-
Cheap oil filter adapter for chevy LS. Is this what you ordered?
http://m.summitracing.com/parts/trd-1020
-
Thats a remote filter adapter, for moving the filter to another location.
-
ya, that would work, but you need a remote housing adaptor also.
The one i found
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/hda-225/overview/make/chevrolet
has a T stat in it, and the filter screws right on it it.
i have the fear of an oil filter flopping around and breaking off what ever mount its mounted to since they are are shitty cast junk metal.
Hope there is enough room from filter to sub on my car

572 is looking good.

i know

Like a woman with shoes...
-
i like my shoes :)
-
your shoes need moar tread!
-
excited for the new ones on 572.
i still like the tires. they just take a different drive style and a little more fuel :)
-
got pics of those tires, waiting on address to send check bah! hicks in Alabama without paypal lol at least he took my offer to just pallet them and ship.
-
send check
Never! Just not worth it at any price.
-
send check
Never! Just not worth it at any price.
True story
-
what are my options for sending money to dumb people?
-
Money order. Cashiers check. Personal check. transfer.
-
And they all suck, you have zero recourse if he does not ship the tires.
-
ive filed multiple paypal claims against sellers who never shipped parts. it doesnt matter what the price is or how "cheap" i cant afford a total loss on the purchase price. its just not worth it to me.
but ymmv
-
Explain to me why you can't cancel a check? Seems like recourse to me. They don't ship you cancel payment. 35$ cancel fee seems way cheaper than a grand lost.
-
how do you cancel a check that is already cashed lol
-
if i was on the other end, i would cash the check, wait till it clears, then ship.
-

afaik, most banks will not reverse the check after its been cashed. if they will, it will take a lot of convincing.
canceling a check before its cashed (thus creating a "bad check") is different from reversing funds.
-

but ymmv
to be clear, you are saying to you paypal is no better?
-
I was under the impression the bank would also go though some effort to recover the funds if cashed. Evidently miss information.

to be clear, you are saying to you paypal is no better?
no, in my experience paypal was good and is the only way i send money for parts. they refunded my money twice when sellers didnt ship. the money has to be sent as payment for good (seller charged the paypal fee) in order for the transaction to qualify for the buyer protection (ability to file a claim)
-
There has to be money in the seller's account too.
I don't pay for goods from unknowns with PayPal balance or bank xfer. Only CC. Then if PayPal stiffs me I can reverse charges.
I learned that with a $40 Jetta grille. thankfully not something more expensive. By the time he really didn't ship he'd withdrawn funds. He never responded to the PP inquiry and lost by default but had no funds in the acct. he just lost the use of that account. Weak.
As for that situation? Hope it's fine. If its not fine it's flushing funds. Being a pirate deal there are always plenty who would help "enforce" if it went south so I'd worry way less than other avenues.

looking good! how long until that sweet exhaust is tested out?
-
hard to tell these days- customer work is going to get in the way pretty soon. race prep and trailer build also in the que. I "think" i have everything i need other than a 14 bolt pinion and trans / steering lines.
-
Tire update.
Check received, tires palleted and sent.
Might have to go to terminal in buffalo to pick them up, Meh.
-
We're up there weekly if that works out and you need them picked.
-
one hugger wrapped. disappointed in SS cable ties i got.
T case shifters fabbed and in.

tire pickup went well?
-
meh. i have to bitch to him. 2 tire have bead damage that will probably be fine. one tire looks like it was taken off with a sawsall. one tire mint. Awesome tread on all 4

fuck dash tube work, im stumped. on to finishing the rest of the car.
Rolled on the lift, front axle full welded and almost race prepped.
RCV's are no joke. man tools needed and tight tolerances to assemble.

-
that looks awesome
-
really that hard to assemble?
I got the set for the 6... haven’t opened the box yet
-
Mine came pre-assembled. Just had to pull the unit bearing, clearance the knuckle, and insert the RCVs.
-
the 60 comes with a tool to remove them. shaft assembly was easy.
install boot into knuckle, install shaft through knuckle boot. no grinding on the solid nuckles needed. large hammers and persuation to get the shaft into the boot, then allign with splines while large hammer to get CV to snap into boot.
never new the boots were hard plastic!
-
doing work!

-
never knew the boots were hard plastic!
The rest of the post before this makes much more sense after reading this haha
Looks frickin awesome, though. Cannot wait to see it in action
-
ya the boot is like same plastic as a Funnel, thats 5/16" thick
-
That boot is a pain! I'd repressed memory of that part... :P
-
RCV's or Superjoints? Which were more of a pain?
-
superjoints lol
-
taking friday to run around for metal, welding gas, hydro hoses and such
11 vacation days to burn left
-
Yeah they are a PITA. Then I had no idea how much grease to put in them. Eric and Brian thought more is better. My knuckles and wheels will never rust:)
-
Bah forgot to measure my car for hoses
-
you should of read the directions prior!
-
mine came greased, the dirrections did not say to add any i didnt said to just put oil on the boot to slide in
-
They come with a tube of grease and a zerk in the end?
-
tube a grease, zerk is flush on the ball of the CV
-
sMike's got big boy RCVs.

Bench mark hydrolics out in Ontario is real good for hydro stuff and custom lines

How much we talking

TSC is cheap and if you just use basic connections.
-
Cheap and easy for basic stuff, yes – but useless if you need AN stuff aren't they?

Jic is what I always use. An is expensive.
-
he talked dash sizes, that makes me think AN.
I don't know what flavor fittings are on the trans and engine.
I'm too spoiled with the cheap leaky simplicity of NPT
-
Yes, if he the hydro lines were made with actual AN fittings it would be expensive, JIC is functionally the same as AN.
- sizes are 1/16" so a -6 is 6/16" or 3/8" JIC, same 37 degree flare.
-
I use this place

258$ for 3 lines and a bump fitting that adapts pump to jic

You're going to need cake after this push to finish!
-
some battery cables, fluids, mount a fuel pump and a night of fab- we should be ready for some real vroom vroom noises.

I might be able to deliver things tonight.
4-springs ($160)

and steering hydro hooked up i think
man short of brakes thats really not that bad for a test drive this weekend!
-
3" spring cost me $45 each when purchased. :'(
-
I can maybe do a little hacking of wires tonight.
-
ok, i take that back, i forgot they are bigger than 2.0's :)
it would be sweet if we got the harness down to power, crank, and keep alive, and tac wire for me to hook into later haha

the pleasant teaser tune we heard will not be ass loud as i thought

only security i know about is the fact it has a remote lock.. usualy means some security feature.
-
GM has used VATS for a long time.
Smike, look up your year make model on ebay for remote start bypass module(s)
But, if your having the PCM flashed anyway for other(s), then he can just flash out this too.
Im having remote start days flash back... I think its just a resistor value.
post up the year / vehicle it came out of. I tell you what you need.

no worries.

Did u dip the heat wrap in water for a few mins before wrapping exh? If not u might wanna then set it to dry out and it'll tighten up a lot more n won't fall off down the road,I didn't do that on my bike exh was a fawking piss off
A thought from Pirate for future reference if you have issues?

i will never ever ever use header wrap again- i hate the stuff its a mess and gets everywhere
they have sprays and such also

Flush trans with its own pump through cooler lines?
Shit, I think you'd have to pump it in, it's just pressure out not draw through. Hmm
Tapatalking in traffic

It's a pain, but I did my Jeep and Burb through the lines. Let it piss a couple quarts into a bucket, shutoff and add two quarts, repeat until cherry red again. Probably wastes some fluid, but better than dropping pan if you don't have a reason to.
-
HF has this thing you hook to a shop vac, i was thinking about trying it.
my own fault pan should have gotten pulled and temp sensor / bung / aftermarket pan should have gotten installed

side note- motor has way more ass than 571 for some reason, maybe its just the 5.38 gears and noise it makes but it feels LS good :)
-
gears and noise. they clearly need to race each other though.
-
I have most of the tabs your ordered here in stock, if you are in a hurry for them.
-
just replacing stuff i stole from Matts pile, no hurry on this one.
-
its also a higher HP motor 4 year newer i believe
-
ya-
The 1999 LM7 engine produced 270 hp (201 kW) and 315 lb·ft (427 N·m), 2000-2003 engines made 285 hp (213 kW) and 325 lb·ft (441 N·m). The 2004-2007 engines made 295 hp (220 kW) and 335 lb·ft (454 N·m)
so stock its 15-25hp more, tuned it might even be more of a difference. they figured out how to cam away EGR on this gen also.
-
they figured out how to cam away EGR on this gen also.
If it's a static cam, that's got to be bad for it in tuned form in my mind. Unless they did away with the need for it entirely on the tuning side
-
is it ready for testing at Lake X?
-
will be ready one way or another tonight! i want a full speed rip before dark on M4 grounds!

fully preped and beat on around M4. Fucking thing leaks anywhere gear oil is so that will have to be delt with next week.

needs more brakes
rear 14 bolt needs wheel seals / vent added
front 60 needs inner axle seals
RCV boot clearance issue - i think the boot is rubbing on the king pin threads, weird.

bunch of other shit normal prep

Tony, Matt, Myself, and Another FLX guy went to Pines today to rip around.
Buggy rips hard, no issues still. trans seems to not care on near vertical climbs. The deeper gear of the 4l60e and way better shift points along with the 5.38s make this thing feel like twice the power to the ground as the other car. is pretty silly with your foot down.
Fixed the case leak last night, two pin holes in the PTO cover rotted out- swapped with an SM465 PTO cover i had laying in the shop.
-
i have decided not to race this weekend. i am going to continue to prep the car, but i just dont want to rush it be cause it will stay hacked.
I still plan to take the car down Friday afternoon, prerun the course but wreck wheel the weekend.

:( for racing, but probably the right thing to do. Can't wait to see this thing in action! 8)
-
define wreck wheeling
-
Van Motor FTW...
are you sure you dont want a 6 popper...
-
define wreck wheeling
Recreational wheeling, while attempting to find weak points (wreck the car off course)
-
(non-racer version)
= recreational off-roading until something breaks on your pile.
or
= recreational off-roading with whatever junk (aka wreck) you brought to the trail.
-
Well put Mark
-
I think if it as recreationally wheeling - without mercy. When in doubt throttle out. Give 'er. You ain't stuck if it ain't broke. Etc.

fork me i still have a ton of shit to do.
got a hood (looks like shit), interior pan, PCM mounted, couple things welded up, more real plumbing mounts done, front track bar brace welded in and thats about it.
Needs side tins, chassis brace on front, limit straps, rear tin and lights hooked up, fuel cell fire wall, rear mid shaft gaurd, oil pressure gage and idiot light, window net
bah.... need another 3 nights not 1

first aid kit
catch cans (think im good)
Numbers
Amber rear light on ignition
rear firewall side to side

Get some sweet Lowe's mailbox numbers! :P
-
Numbers are not necessary. Run it.
-
numbers are necessary according to rules
brake lights or horn is not.
-
They are not too strict on some of the "rules"
I had no numbers on the Profender car.
-
brake lights or horn is not.

this thing plain works. i like it a lot.
did anything 571 has done and more in 1 day. love the solid 3 links- im sold. curous if i under sized the track bar rod ends though see how they last.
lots of oil leaks to fix, fluids and tool storage needs to be delt with, and finish up the rear of the chassis.
jotters is fun now :)
-
this thing plain works
Can't say much more than that.
I'm blown away. None of the rear engine issues I was thinking of as possible. Climbs like a billy goat.
Hope the gears last, coast-side ring gear loading is the only concern I've got left and that'll take a while to prove out.
-
loving the high belly. its really nice not to have to belly flop and pole vault with HP over stuff.
hit it once or twice running walking in the park at race pace while the rest of the group was in convoy headed back
couldnt get up stair step, but i bet ill be able to run a little more to the right on pitman rock

Did you get lonely all by yourself

nope, the 4l60e and leaking 205 kept me company

Facebook videos look awesome. Sorry I missed the maiden voyage

If you gotta order 205 output seals I could use 2
Where do you guys get those small lug nuts from, fastenal?
-
small lug nuts?
my 205 is coming out, i hope to find what the leaking issues are and solve them. it leaks 1 quart in 6 hrs of use
-
Ya ,mine take like a 1 1/8" socket to take off you and Ryan's look like a 3/4" socket
-
are they 1/2" or 9/16" studs?
ebay a full set of enclosed lug nuts that use 3/4 socket for 9/16" stud are like 24$ for 32 they are awesome, Gbroslostbomer, 571, 572 all have them now

Let me know when you are swapping springs. I will try to get there to do some shock tuning while they are off.
-
Those came with my spacers. Enclosed will protect the studs
-
is the pitch on those 18,they dont list it?
-
not sure when i will get to working on the car- things are really starting to get in my way and piss me off.
-
spent some time reading the homebuilt paper work i submitted for back in 2011 for the other car. Looks like having a 200X motor kills the deal to do it full legit- must have emissions for motor year.
getting a VW title or some other title... bah!
-
Sometimes I can't imagine what was going on in their minds. Any newer engine is going to be running 100% cleaner even without all of the emissions than the older exempt engines. Why put a restriction on it like that? Stupid NY.
-
I'm assuming it's not as simple as adding an OBD port and a cat?

Isn't all about the $$? How else can they justify the constant increases in fees (aka taxes) on any motor vehicle?
But I digress...
-
so list the fees and key terms defined, dont DMV jungle gym it into a 4 month unknown process
-
big boy rear shaft welded up tonight
-
new rear shaft installed
rear 14 bolt hub seals replaced
front 60 torn down, inner axle seals installed
axle vents both ends installed
205 pulled on the bench and re sealed / re gasketed
oil cooler block off plated tapped and oil pressure sender hooked up for gage, idiot light sender installed
dash and leg padding installed

lost the instructions for the tac. was nice of them to put huge warning labels on the wires not to hook them up wrong and void warranty- you think they could have put a description for the 4 wires on those labels- no

weird, didn't work for me and right click to view in new tab brought me to their search page
same here.

shock tune much better but its got more to go.
i think the front needs more taken out of both, and the rear needs more taken out of just the rebound
ass end wants to go over the front when jumped just like the other car does. not sure if its driving or not. i dont think i was wimping it, and stayed on power
-
limit straps all 4 corners installed,
ready for more sky time
-
gps in
winch control mounted in dash
tack installed, but i guess i need a resister and white wire pin 10 for 03+ ECMs to work
tins cal''d up

flogged the shit out of this car several times this weekend, it refuses to fail. i am pleased.
couple small known issues that occurred
popped rad hose that was exposed, new aluminum straight neck in hand
bent rear mid shaft ( pillow block needs to move further back and shaft material upgraded
broke limit strap eye day 1 obstical 1, possible mounting issue
PSC ram loose internally
left header flange contacts plug boots cracked a plug, coil is grounding out somtimes- meh
slammed knee on orbital mount in otters trail, need to fix or move or pad better, no good.
front suck down loop broke off, needs more steel
bent front track bar, needs more wall
several rock bounce attempts inside shoot the moon exit, had to turn Rs in mudd with bounce assaults on right side. that trail is nuts now.
All 3 cars made it up both talismans today. i gave up on lower, then gif and jeff made it, so i hit it harder and made it barely with lots of Rs and smoke
front end needs more shock tune too bouncy going slow
-
I watched the flogging 572 took. It was impressive. I have to say, I have never seen a burnout on a tree that was still standing with a wheel that was 5 ft up it before. We need to start taking more videos. ;)
-
flog by brail to where the traction is....
-
Failed TG strap Rc47 bolt ends
-
i guess "it'l be fine" is no longer good for my wreck wheeling style. Chassis welds broke in 5 places around rear end....always knew it needed more tube, just didnt think it needed it for a RC wreck wheel trip....

we are not nice to the buggies 8)
define welds broke. I would think the material next to the welds broke. your welding looks good.

ya material failed next to welds

that was me wreck wheeling.
then you and jeff had to hawg your way up so i hit 10 times more 3x harder and made it lol
-
someone asked me if there were plans to build my buggy from today hahaha
-
broken material ground out / re welded. 6 or 7 tubes notched in and tac'd up. good start about half way to rear end finish.
F Mud.
-
I feel like we are just driving around looking for something to break the buggies. In one day of "Wreckage Wheeling" I broke a CV, Front stub and rear axle shaft. Boy, did we have fun though.

No. No. No. We are looking for challenges to test our design and fabrication skills.
-
Yup. Does that mean that Jeff's fab skills failed miserably? ;D
-
im pretty sure im down to either an electrical failure, or tires
probably should get a trans gage, but thats why it got two big boy coolers.
-
Yup. Does that mean that Jeff's fab skills failed miserably? ;D
No. That means he has exceeded the components operating limits.
-
Several times.
-
this hawg needs a new shifter before next trip.
-
new limit straps on the way
need a night in the shop to inspect, complete cooler/ tool storage, and fix trans shifter.

forgot about that, thanks.
it was fine when i pulled into trailer last week. when the problem occured, the dash indicator light was dim and flickering, has to be electrical supply issue.
-
trail gear sent me 2 new limit straps, free overnight ed. thats pretty stellar service, when they gave me half off on the first 4 shipped lol
-
you move your steering valve?
-
/no :o
prep done
some fliuids
fixed rear limit strap
HD front suck down
added some front tie downs
made shifter cable solid rod
needs a bath, fuel, and straps.

new rubber in the back of the dodge. yummy
-
H1 12bolts are neat. they have this oval shaped valve stem hole- he gave me these things that bolt in and make it NPT. weird. I welded and re drilled for normal stems. Cut the rubber run flats down with a chain saw :o took about an hour of grunting to get the method down on the first on but i got these guys mounted up Friday. They were nice and painted. They were re centered to about 3.5" BS by a real company with nice pressed centers. The 5th wheel i dont need looks a little hack with a flat center, meh. New combo looks HD. looks crazy. Also started on a light bar Saturday and get it mounted and wired last night. Fixed a couple other issues and ran a real cell vent. Had to move the coolers and tweak the upper radiator hose to keep the bar inside the chassis.

Looks good! KOH ready!

sounds like M4 might have to use a tape measure before anymore late night purchases LOL

we new it would be wide and i have a wedge. they were bought for Nates and jeffs and other local woods wheeling really. Wedge duty trips. Anything far we go to is for Rocks and KRTs so id have the enclosed trailers then

I bet they are not nice to drivetrain parts. lots of traction and mass

short side inner RCV shaft gave up.
time to go to the 4K$ 300M option

hmm i guess they are only 3K awesome :o

short side inner RCV shaft gave up.

Warranty?

sounds like they will allow you to upgrade your warranty to 300M shafts. didnt know they were only 800 more.
wont be taking the same shafts to the desert thats for sure!
-
So much for "indestructible"... :(
-
I think mike's application falls out of the suggested guidelines for indestructible.
But I won't say anything.

I assume that location of failure raped the carrier? I have an open one if you need it.

Good point.

plenty of guys on 44's that dont brake those. And with way more HP.
I would think the pinion at the yoke would have broke first. Or maybe the 1350 joint at the axle end.
I think he got a defective one.
-
Burn it. :P

I'd tend to agree. And also agreed on what the weak points SHOULD be, much further up the chain from the axles shafts.

Same I was sure it had to be the spider gear welds. Upgrade to 300m doesn't sound like a bad idea though. Might try and get a spool with that upgrade?

i was surprised i was able to use 2 telescoping magnates and with some jiggling the chunk of spline slid out of the carrier though the tube. Carrier does not appear to be f'd just the seal. I didn't pull the diff cause no point in 2x work. it got a spindle and hub thrown back on and stuck in the trailer.
Ill look at spool costs. id say the weak link is still the stock rusty front 84 GMC drive shaft with one semi dry original 1350 ujoint that was in said drive shaft when i picked it up out of the scrap pile lol. it is 5.38 times less ass there and really only 300hp on a cold day. A ring gear running backwards or the shafts still have to be the weak link.
300M and maybe a spool will be the fix. needed a fluid change and a diff cover bolt guard is near in the future
for what i have done with KRTs in the rocks, i dont think it was defective. anger and HP could not break them at least 2X

RCVs now for rockwell 2.5 tons
47 spline :o
-
237 for a yukon 4.56 and up isnt terible. would get rid of the spacer i have now.
-
email into RCV.
their live chat is not so live.
probably have a 4130 shaft warrantied- either sell the set or keep as spare. Then just get another full 300M set because no sense in having 3 spare weak shafts.
-
any more air videos of 572 haha. thats a fun rock jump hill
i like the one josh got of 4 wheel roosts though two gears launch
-
that ledge looks so small on video
-
its only like 4' :)
-
Called RCV- they said it broke the way they break.
287$ option to upgrade the shaft to 300M, or free warranty of the 4130 shaft.
the upgraded 300M kit has 300M CV's so ill just warranty the shaft, and get another full set of 300M RCVs.
he was very supprised to hear 300hp and 44" tires broke a shaft. same response copper fab gave me when i was the only guy to break one of there sway bars so far. Cant wait to break a solid knuckle next!

Chromos w CTMs
12 year old bald boggers
And 68 HP...
Thats how its done SON.
Dont risk it w anything less.

you have much still to learn erik haha
CTMs are silly when you break chromo shafts (shafts not yoke failure) im up to 4 or 5 now i believe

Old interco's and low HP is clearly the way to go!

4 wheel steer full 300M RCV'd 47 spline rocks with 53 Mickys, ya. later. still into racing for now.

Next weak link. R&P
we talked about this, and dont forget- i running a 60 R&P on the coast side backwards. good thing though if that blows, ill just cut out the center and put a 14 section in with all the same parts

14b has the same weakness, no? Or just not worried about strength of that monster
-
just looked up what 'rockwells' were. I think I'm most intrigued by the pinion mounted disc brake options. I'm looking at that and thinking "how much simpler could it be?" I'm assuming there is only a solid shaft in the axle tube for that to work. Or could you use an open/auto/lsd and still use pinion braking?
Granted 572 would never use anything but straight welded axle anyway...
-
pinion disk brakes are primarily used as a parking brake..
they are available for 231’s D300’s, Atlas etc…
I would think.. if you use a pinion brake at any type of speed the DS is spinning a hell of a lot faster than the wheels with less mechanical advantage...
shits gona brake (get it)
-
shits gona brake (get it)
Ha!
That parking brake makes more sense than driving brake. I would also expect they require some type of balancing too.
I'm thinking 573 (should she ever exist) should be built on rockwells. Then we could start a pool on how long it takes Mike to need new shafts.
2" diameter shafts... I think it would take him a bit longer with those.
-
monster trucks use pinion brakes..
-
Rockwell pinion brakes are mounted on the 3rd member, so driveshaft strength would not be a concern
-
A lot of rockwell guys use strictly pinion brake. They are a lot more heavy duty than those designed for a parking brake. But yes they are much less functional at speed.
-

yup...
and double yup.... wouldn’t not want them on a street or race rig....
all I’m picturing is 65 mph and a panic stop…
driveshaft lock up.... crunching and snapping to follow...
-
Umm mechanical engineer disagrees. I get 5.38 revolutions now of pad on rotor to stop 1 rotation of a tire? The mechanical advantage is the other way. What do larger rotors do... more linear feet of dragging per* wheel rev. ( pressures and surface area considered)
Didn't read link you posted arie yet

no useful information there.
also.... what is this drive shaft speak? its a pinion brake, not a transfer case output brake people... no load on shafts unless your doing a brake stand
-

Automatic trans?
-
straight from the pirate- you guys read and maybe will clear up some things.. read it more than once. i think the conclusions are a little bias based on poorly designed OEM systems, but the physics don't lie, pinion brakes can and will create more braking when used properly.
OK, so, moving rig has kinetic energy, kinetic energy must be turned into heat, rotors must absorb said heat. Big deal, so what?
Well, the equations that follow are used to calculate the temperature increase in the rotor for a given kinetic energy. Remembering that kinetic energy depends on weight and speed, they also explain in incontrovertible terms (big word – means you can’t bloody argue with me about it!) exactly why “pinion brakesâ€, flat out suck, and why Patooyee’s rotors keep trying to melt off ! Remember – to add insult to injury “pinion brakes†are often used on Rockwell-axled rigs – which are big and heavy, and weight is a multiplying factor in the equation for Kinetic energy.
[As an aside – the previous discussion on brake torque also explains why some feel that pinion brakes work well “at slow speedâ€. It’s because the rotor is placed before the axle differential, meaning the pinion brake’s brake torque is calculated as above and then multiplied by a factor equal to the axle ratio. This means, even with small callipers and rotors, they can develop tremendous brake torque. But – remember what we said about the requirements of a braking system – it must also have sufficient thermal capacity – and they simply do not. In fact, they’re dangerously inadequate in this regard!]
-
It seems to me they would be much stronger due to the reduction of the diff (resistive force created by kinetics from moving vehicle goes backwards through diff so ...) but then you would have an increased likelihood of diff explosion. It looked to me like these things use a standard open diff with spiders (but then I may not have been looking at the pieces correctly) which would seem to allow one wheel to freewheel with a pinion lock up (reverse of traction loss).
As a bonus, the loss of critical mechanicals and rotational weight at the wheels would seem to provide in increase in responsiveness (albeit small) and longevity.
That is just from the outside looking in though. I would still think an automatic would be prefered to keep the drivetrain happy in a panic situation. That won't fix any related diff explosions though.
Smike, when you getting some?

later. they are way to dam heavy for now.

thermal capacity is a limiting factor... but boy howdy do they do work.
was looking for and failed to find a pic of the sparks the MJ trucks throw during a freestyle run.
without lockers or spools though you're in bad shape if you lift tires.
-
also.... what is this drive shaft speak? its a pinion brake, not a transfer case output brake people... no load on shafts unless your doing a brake stand
never mind.. this solved it for me...
no more discussion needed...

I was picturing this kind of setup but with the brake on the driveshaft side of the axle pinion..

Next weak link. R&P
we talked about this, and dont forget- i running a 60 R&P on the coast side backwards. good thing though if that blows, ill just cut out the center and put a 14 section in with all the same parts
umm 14 bolt front...
Are the splines the same from a 60 to a 14b? or upgrade to the 40 spline...
Wait you are running a chevy front correct that is upside down?
So actually you would be running on the drive side of the gear.
-
not sure if splines are same, but id get a spool or different inners
front chevy flipped with input dirrection changed... running on coast backwards
-
rear 14 is flipped also, running on coast side
-
Cut and paste:
Q: What's wrong with pinion brakes?
A: Nothing, really. Pinion brakes are awesome but there are some things that need to be understood about them. The main thing is that the reason they are so effective at stopping a rig quickly is that they use the Rockwell axle's deep gear reduction to multiply braking effort whereas a conventional axle has the gearing working against the brakes. But in exchange for this multiplicative effect the pinion brake spins 6.72x faster than a conventional wheel brake would. Thus, roughly about 6.72x the heat is developed to stop the vehicle. At 30mph braking at the pinion is very similar to a normal wheel brake rig riding the brakes at over 100mph!!! So pinion brakes are really good at stopping a rig quickly but not for long periods of time. If you don't ride your brakes coasting down long hills or go fast a lot then pinion brakes are probably great for you. But if you drive on the road or wheel at places like Harlan, KY pinion brakes probably aren't the best choice.
2.5 tons wheel brakes:

also noticed that in a 4 wheel skid in FWD, the rears lock up like they have 75% brake power. i must have the front/ rear swapped, or it just how it is....
i decided to leave it this way because when going fast in 4x4 it doesnt matter, but in front dig it puts way less stress on the front shafts just tapping the brakes to lock the rear.
meh

I believe KOH has claimed my brake flaring kit. searched all mine and Matt's tool bags, looked in all the trailers, and then did it all over again for fun. wasted 2 hours looking for it, and then got to advance 20 min after they closed. (3rd auto parts run for the day)
got back, used the tub clamp part from an old kit that dies are broken and threads are stripped on press part....

Trans blow proof cover?
What I read was orbital needed to be "behind Cowl"
I assumed that meant under.
I was hoping to just encase it in its own aluminum box under the cowl if it's an issue.
-
Enclosure of the orbital would at least meet the spirit of the rule, very much so. The intent is that a bad fitting/ loose fitting/ blown line won't douse you w burninating hot fluid or pose an injection hazard.

gotcha.

ordered 400 tear offs for my new helmet. 45$ shipped.
http://www.racedaysafety.com/
-
That's cheap.
-
it was cheap enough to try. Everyone says to try them i dont really see them being usefull. no mud flap and hard to just grab one.
I did great this weekend with just a roll of paper towels. i would be unstoppable with a box of wipealls mounted to the roof.
i have also considered a headlight wiper assembly or some other type of electric wiper.
-
tear-offs are the shit!
-
So the advantage to the desert is no mud. Too bad sand is just as bad...
-
i assume i am going to learn there is a reason why no one we race with uses tear offs. the goggles we got are pretty good with roll offs but they have their limitations.
i ran for a while with the roll off goggles over a full face helmet. that would be the ticket if we could find a larger roll system.
-
I thought what you said the other guys did with a squirt bottle and rag would Prob work ok too. Simple.
I don't know if I would hate silt worse than mud... never been in real desert silt so I can't really say.
But I really hate mud.
-
tear offs work great for atv'n dont see why not in a buggy
-
mounting the roll off to the helmet has promise, I think. Agreed that a larger rolloff would be very nice both in length and height.
I think a bike water bottle cage w big bottle could work well for a squirt n wipe but that's some complex operation while under way.
-
Co dog should give the squirt and wipe.
Driver need to look at oncoming muddy forest.

sitting in the shop ready for a wreck beating!
-
so i finish my 10 minutes of packing and mount 2 new trailer tires, go to pull buggy out of shop, running and stumbling like crap and while im looking for a coil wire or cracked plug or some sensor loose i notice there is coolant pouring from the front of the block around the water pump. awesome. Pull the pump and find the compression limiting gasket is nuked. run to shitbox store and get 2 new gaskets, and an entire water pump assembly that also comes with its gaskets.
decided the welder is buried and packed so sealing up the new WP heater outlets will be a hassle. Throw new gaskets at old pump with everything cleaned up. what a PITA to line up these gaskets without the bolts falling out. start car, fill coolant system, and still has small drip in same place but not pouring out like before. motor starts making horrendous high pitch screeching sound with 4psi oil less than normal now. after 20 min of searching, the hose i rerouted ( i think PCV from left head) into the manifold that was causing my throttle to stick on is now causing all the noise in the intake, the motor running like shit, and the oil pressure. i have no idea, that hose is hanging now and the manifold port plugged. ignoring the coolant drip for now.
had not planned on a late night.

good question- i dont recall. it was a 2004 2500 express van, 6 lug
There is a factory power brake fitting plug that would be installed in the manifold we could check on 571 and 572. 571's motor was unknown application also.
I recall ryans 6.0 motor did have hydroboost and had the plug we had to remove.

both king pin bushings were exploded and bits.

it seemed to be ok with exploded KP bushings?
like you said, bronze would be nice, but having a little give somewhere in the system is probably good. since the nylon ones are a $3 part, might just be a replace every 2 races kinda thing.
-
Looks good.
So it has a bronze bushing in there?
Breaking things to get give where things should be tight doesn't seem ideal to me. I like the idea of bronze and no springs for tight steering all the time. It's not like that 1/8" or less of give when the plastic shatters is going to help prevent catastrophic failure.

It'll be fine through LM 3.5 I'm sure. Especially if the rest of the car breaks around it ;)

right side wheel no turny
probable shaft failure, doubt the globe blew- regardless its getting a yukon spoll to match the front for easy broke bits extraction next time.
jotters was dry. i was rock bouncing the left side after heating them up and making the right side.
big snap after lift off and down hahaha
-
No good

shaft failed.
5 min swap and back in business at least for the race this weekend.
looking in to long term upgrade.

Good god. Such a clean break

50$ shipping to get a 200$ gear set and pinion seal here thursday.
bah.
Back up plan was make the car 4.56's which i have sitting on the shop floor in my way, but thats about 4X the work for a downgrade.

just ordered my chromoly rear kit from summer 269 shipped... got a steal.
-
couldnt wait any longer for fedex guy bah
updated account settings for drop off to leave all packages. meh. ill be running around later im sure to find my gear set.
-
Should have asked me on the gear stuff, I would have hooked you right up.
-
unfortunately i didnt have more than an over night shipping option from summit this time around. i see some gear changes soon with probably all three of the cars this year lol
delivered at front door apparently.
-
Gear set and pinion seal in hand. missed that pinnion yoke seal surface is a little beat, i guess that will be next prep when it starts to leak again haha
-
bolted on rear tires last night trying to get as far along as possible with what i had- noticed the driver side chassis link mount has 1/4" play and the bolt is rattling around in the bolt lock. looks like welded in top lock broke free in the chassis. removed, have a fix plan- just ran out of steam last night.
crazy.
-
front end re geared, rear link chassis mount fixed. window nets and numbers, loaded in the trailer just needs fuel!
-
i set the pinion depth .008" more to compensate for outer gear chipping. Added .004 to pinion preload. both gear sets were +.005's
Id give this failure 50% random setup that lasted 1 year, 50% loose pinion nut loss of pinion preload.

pumper needs replacement or fix
rear sway bar would be nice
ruff stuff parts lists are very confusing for sway bars
are the arms just plates or assembled? do you need the "kit" also?
are the arms sold in pairs or single? fully welded ready to bolt onto a bar?

Can't pick a bar out. Sounds like he wants a phone call for bar stuff. I need to do same but I think wheels may have to come first :(

What about the currie kit?
Arms aren't as stout as ruff stuff. Are they more of a crawler kit?

took my scale over to the shop
each of my tree sliders weigh 25 lbs
front bumper 15lbs

front 1/8" plate removed 8lbs

14bolt spool is 27 lbs- might lathe off another 8lbs
14bolt oe clam and welded globe 33lbs
-
have building some spare drive shafts in the back of my mind since even though i have been through a lot of iterations of improvement- they still seem to be one my my common failures.
mid shaft in the car is a good spare, but it has a slugged section, with the failure of plug weld designed removed. i have 3/8 wall DOM to replace it but having a hard time coming up with a way to adapt while maintaining strength. have a few 60 pinions laying around, 1350 yokes are 50$ each
im tempted to go back to original 2" 120 wall tube to 14bolt yokes, with a slug of 7075 inside of it to keep bending down
-
ordered some fresh KRTs
started turning down a yukon spool last night- currently at 12lb lighter than OE clam, have a bit more to go. all carbides are not a like! turning twislers!
-
14bolt weight reductions in
14bolt OE clam 33lbs
yukon spool 27lbs
M4 shaved yukon spool 18lbs

Wow these are heavy.
I suppose you could pull it out for weigh in
-
placed ruff stuff order last monday
still no confirmation
cant this be easier
-
amazes me the ruff stuff sits on stuff
ya uh we are waiting on a big heim shipment, maybe Thursday. so keep my money for 10 days and don't ask me ?

I think BFG charges when they ship?
-
i got them thrusday i think, no charges yet
-
the mud guard for my relay packs under front hood, 8lbs steel removed
all cooler mounts and battery top mounts removed and swapped to aluminum flat stock, 12lbs removed
I think fuel cell enclosure / mounts are next after running some numbers. i am at about 190 lbs of 240 needed to be gone.
my sway bar / hardware is 28lbs, removed but i dont think that was on for last weigh in.
AGMs are 45 lbs each :o

-
My guess is that triangle mount might not fly. May appear to on coming traffic that you are broken down.
I believe it comes off and is only displayed when needed.
-
flip it around so reflectors are pointing into car.
-
the car is required to run rear facing reflective surface. surface requirements undefined. Reflective break down devices must be min 12" tall. (or battery beacons). Min 2. i made 3.
I got the idea from Bill Barids car. very similar, except his exhaust runs though the middle of the pinned triangles.
the black part in the center of the triangles can be folded down 90 degrees to make them self standing, or 180 degrees to stake into sand / ground. 0.050" aluminum and cotter pins for quick no tool release.
i think its well with in the rules.
-
They're perfect. particularly since the rear reflective surface requirements are undefined.
-
i thought it was pretty genius taking bills design that doesn't meet the free standing rule and fixing it 8)

It's a great design. No doubt.

shit is about to get real

damn that looks good! not sure if it was the front end do-over or the chassis paint but that looks awesome!

How long do you have the scales? I would love to get corner weights on my car for when I order 2.5s

So when you're on the track and you encounter a point where you'd need to winch out, how do you do that when you have no codriver?
-
You get out and do it.
-
getting out sucks. you loose 10 minutes plus what you had to do. belts and nets and radios and pumper hose. something is bound to get put back in an agitating way.
your car being in the way is also a risk, especially since i cant really see behind me. at all.
Tonight start good, turned bad, returned to good.
pulled the rear bench seat from the 4500, made a carpet covered deck, mattress fits much better now. Rear tool box removed. Radio antenna mounted to headache.
Stripped out a rear wheel stud locking down lug nuts on the car.... added spare front / rear studs to the parts pile and spare lug nuts....
packed car tool bags and on board spare parts.
pumped out matts car. 11 gals of fuel is FUCKING heavy.
added back my remote fill to the car. no way you guys would be able to fuel me safely without it.
packed and packed more. Matt and I dropping 4500 at regional 8am for sticker.

Buy a used Ls1 or Ls2 from that place in Buffalo. They say they have many 5.7 and 6.0 takeouts from GTOs and such. It should be plenty in stock form, or do some head work and get a few more out of it.
I think Cody Addington is running a stock bottom end LS1 with just some ported heads and got like 350 at the tires.

Any other options out there?
-
i think my current system is fine- i just need to find the problem. i chose to use one vented walbro, which may have been a mistake based on lack of research.
i also added 1 cubic foot of foam before KOH which could have disrupted internal plumbing.
once the plow truck burns all the fuel in the cell, ill remove and dissemble the entire cell. rebuild with all new parts, and put a renduant pump / filter system in as backup.

yeah for having to pull RCVs and send them back again

found a level of IB and jim bean Maple that allowed me to do some fuel system work tonight while Matt and Joe prepped 928
Found RCI cell internal hose disintegrated at walbro tee, sucking air 5" above bottom of cell. This was our running out of fuel at 22gallons used issue at KOH.
All foam removed and cut into smaller pieces. hose replaced with some other upgrades. Walbros in good shape.
Fuel system no bubbles with 4 gallons in the cell now.
Car race prepped, bolt checked, fluids, front shocks bumped up 1" ride height and dual rates lowered 1"
-
Rci-supplied hose? The normal fuel injection rated stuff we use should be submersion rated but who knows what they use. Crappy, but good it was obvious and easily fixed.
Tapatalking in traffic
-
yes RCI supplied hose. looks like it was standard trans cooler type hose with a push connect AN at the top connected to the bulk head fitting though tank. i suspect the hose is not rated for ethanol like there foam and cell gaskets aren't.
regular PFI hose is NOT submersible. The ethanol rated coating inside the hose is very thin and weak, strengthened with a not rated external fiber reinforced shell.
rubber submersible hose is very expensive, like dollars per inch- i used some to connect my walbros inside the cell. it was in great shape.
-
571 and 928 should have all aluminum hard pickups of it recall
-
My foam is still bagged in a cabinet, and I'm not racing any u4 this year, so I might confirm that next winter? :)
-
ran 30 miles like a rapped ape. loved front shock mounts in the trees. shock preload and dual rate adjustments were massive improvements. limped 10 miles to finish 40 miles
barely wanted to climb trailer fenders tonight to unload. at least the problem is still present. going to tear into fuel system- pull and flush injectors, change pump, check cell pickups again.
install fuel pressure gage
man this thing is dirty i hate mud races.

i only used it once so far, so no verdict yet.

did you think it had a 4l60 all this time?
-
no clue the visual difference. i assumed it was a 4l60e, but wiki says all 2500's have 4l80e
ill have to confirm i guess next time the car is torn down (its kinda buried inside and not visible 99% of the time)
-
got the lift tonight on this guy
found a broken rear slider bolt! new failure, suspect wreck wheeling slammed calliper up i guess?
also found a huge chunk of black rubber gasket material blocking filter inlet. going to change filter and pump, call that fixed for now.
not sure my plan for 2" fox bumps is going to be a bolt on swap. the can lengths are much different and i was bottoming on the end of the bump in my design. might just run as is for now, fix can mounts for IN race.
rear shocks and limit straps pulled for Fox 2.5 install

prepped and done
motor sounds reborn with 60psi of fuel instead of 45. filter was being blocked by a 1.5"x.5"x.5" hunk of jello gooo inner hose gunk.

chassis power washed down again
front hydro lines and fittings re arranged for fix
fluid containment balloons swapped
i seem to have a bolt / miss alignment failure and not the actual heims that are wearing and causing the slop. not sure whats up.
-
You're still not on top locks, right? Could be loosening just a smidge and allowing some play/slam/wear?
-
All top locked and checked tight at least 2x since KOH. Heim ball doesnt move, bolt doesn move. misallignment moves in heim and around bolt.
i did notice some of the tabs are not quite parallel and maybe edge loading the missalignment so might adjust and add some washers ect
-
Could the misalignment spacers be just a little bit long inside the Heim joint?
I guess that would not explain the spacers moving on the bolt, just the ball around the spacers
Tapatalking in traffic
-
i think its just the softest material compared to the heim ball and the 3/4" bolt and it got beat.
We are changing to all Stainless steel misalignments for east coast problems. i guess the strength will be different.
-
I can test hardness of old and new stainless spacers of you really want to know.
-
i could to, and do a lot more at work- but it wouldnt matter. we are stuck with what we have. SS should be here tomorrow.
-
wheel bearing service completed.
2 new KRTs mounted up, 3 more tomorrow after sifting though worst mounted on KMCs
-
SS misalignments made it in today
-
all new 3/4" grade 8 link hard ware and new SS misalignment spacers installed. 8 heims out of 12 changed for any kind of play. front upper was fine on both ends, rear right side lower was fine.
all joints had crushed/worn misalignments as 90% of play. looking at the thickness of the design, i think its just weak and crushes with race prep torque. see how the SS work. i didnt go nuts and only torqued with impact instead of 3' bar hump.

gona start banking parts for a 14bolt front axle build
tricky part i dont see much about is making the 35sline RCVs play in something that will hold a 14 bolt ring gear. rest is easy with seals, a new pair of solid C's and parts swap.
-
what does the Torq axle use?
-
I know one potential solution is having ARB side gears broached.
not sure what others use. more likely custom axle shafts to match the standard 14b 32sp involute?
-
14bolt is 30 spline on 1.5"
60 is also 1.5"and of course 35 spline.
-
Here is an interesting quote.
35 spline would be a strength downgrade from the factory 14-bolt 30 spline layout, so I'd be surprised if anybody will be offering them as a standard-production item.
Personally, I think if I had to have that, I'd make it out of a set of D60 side gears, a stock 14-bolt carrier, some tube scraps, and a bunch of welding wire.
-
yes, i read that also. in the same thread i also read someone say that running a 14bolt backwards is no stronger than a 60 forwards... which we have proven false many times over this year.
I also have $6K in axle shafts that are 35spline. could spend 2K on 4 more custom inners, that would be much lead time to replace.
-
I have a Dana 60 broach, didn't need one for my 14 Bolt design.
-
can i have and aussie that fits in a 14 but is broached for 35 spline 60? :)
that would solve all my problems haha
-
Yes you can!
-
wonder how materials compare to a yukon spool to hold the 300M

pulled in tonight.
i have two failing non water proof switches for front lights and HI rad fan. need to source match to other waterproof switches.
exhaust flange swapped to 3000 deg graphite
flat tire from badlands got two new valve stems
pumped 22 gallons of fuel from cell after when erik put 10 gallons in last lab of badlands and a full hard day of wheeling with Gif at RC. At about 8 gallons pumped, air started to show in supply. AN fitting on cell found to be finger tight! F
-
WOOOOO finger loose! :-/
Hope that was it. You digging deeper?
Tapatalking in traffic

will being able to pull 22 gallons out of the cell after badlands lap and day at RC, im good for now. if i have problems at line mt, ill pull cell apart again.
My LifetimeLED headlights took a beating from the front end loader chain at badlands! tweaked and cracked but adjusted and still working lol
chassis tube up front found cracked
-
put 29 gallons in the cell
bolt checked
rear left tire changed back to full tread
fuel filter changed
lubed
just need to swap two switches and dry out the seat.
just about race ready.
-
car working great. felt a little loose first lap but i just needed to settle in.
Eric peterson pulled over to let me by, i went through some tall grass and found a 24" tree stump. hit hard. thought the car was ok but soon after the rest of the chassis mounted front 3rd link mount let go. i thought it was the front R&P so i continued to run at reduced pace on lap 3.
the link slamming around eventually took out wires that killed the motor. severe damage, front coilovers, shafts, bump and steering damage, front drive shaft yokes beat.
2 hours to strap it to mobile and limped rest of 3rd lap.
worst carnage to date probably. shitty.
-
You and trees just don't mix! Sorry to hear, that sucks.
-
Only one incident can really compare. Considering that one cracked the transmission case as well, it's still in contention for worst.
Really sucks. I'm glad you didn't get hurt.

I thought it was bad when we were bombing around RC south property and hit a few of the new stumps at wreck wheeling speed.
Cant imagine at race speed!
-
too see the materials and sizes of welds that failed on the car- is impressive. the third link mount to the floor failed at impact- but felt fine because the main support tube just bent up and jammed up against the dash bar but eventually failed miles later and started flooping around and took out the main power too my dash panel. Low side driven fans and radio was good so i knew it wasnt total electrical failure.
my neck hurt all day yesterday, is pretty good today.

Wayne got some new shock eyelets from Fox this weekend at a short course race he was at.
Also talking to the guys at PolyPerformance about getting on the race program and waiting to hear back express shipping quotes for shafts, eyelets, and a gallon of spendy oil.

washed
front right tire leaking air
upper link mount on axle truss cracked and ready to tear off
chassis upper link mount failure
30% brakes for unknown reason
looks like front CO shafts are ok.
One bent eye, one blown eye
rear coilover dual rates set too low, bottom coil crashing and exploded dual rate spacer both sides had to pound down upper coils.
right rear coil over lower coil flapping around and beat up bottom of the shock like profenders do normally. FAIL from IN tuning fix.
front shaft slip yoke hosed
front D60 yoke hosed
lost gallon of coolant in fluids storage
at this point i left the shop and sick of looking at it.
Fuck this thing. sick of 1000$ to run a 40$ race
-
parts on the way
de trail rigged and spares / tools removed for short course.
badness cut out and most of heavy fab work done and full welded on the chassis side.
brake line found failed.
-
no response from poly guys, after live chat "he was back from lunch and sitting down to it now"
-
that really annoys me- i put together a nice professional proposal and they new that really i just needed parts quick this time, but would like to be on there race program for next time. no responce. Glad i just moved forward with Chris and Wyane at Altech to get parts.
50$ a gallon for shock oil! eeek
-
front upper link back in, new driveshaft in, brake line replaced. steering and brakes bled, full zip tied!
tomorrow shock parts order should be in, need to pull all 4 shocks for parts to swap in, going to increase spring rate in the rear also.
-
good to go minus tire swap. Might change in new 300M RCV
-
12 laps of short course is too much for my cooling system. first time its been pushed. We got lucky Derek West flipped in the woods caused a Red flag that gave us 20minutes of recovery time before the last 4 laps of the race once restarted.

we need more HP simple as that if ever coming back to Sturgis.
new shocks in the rear and springs felt good.

continued fuel system issues past 8-10 gallons used.
cell getting pumped out and pulled again this week.
-
total fuel cell disassembly last night. Found hardlines and walbros on top of foam chunks. drained, pulled foam, cleaned and shopvac'd crap out of cell. leak checked pickup to walbros no leak.
pulled foam, reassembled, fixed leaking cap. (was a vented cap)
changed fuel filter, all is good so far.
-
yellow foam?
-
foam was in good shape- there was chunks of disolved black hose, black gasket and orange gaskets. the 70um walbros really keep any big crap from getting up to the main filter and pump.
im going to go solid baffling for KOH now that the cell is clean. my try the grey thin sewer drain and see if fuel kills it

Try it in a bucket first :)

probably just give Wayne 200$ for his stuff. Might ask our materials people here for off the shelf ideas to put up with pump gas
-
old gas cans :)
-
thats not a terrible idea lol
we have about 10 YJ poly tanks out back, also have a 22 gallon fuel cell. could cut some 2" rings and stick them in. would be a lot of deburing thouh from a chain saw blade or circ saw the cut it
-
Wouldn't take much to clean them up with a fresh flap wheel. Would be harder to make sure they are really clean than deburred. I don't know about the shape of those YJ tanks and making shapes that wouldn't nest, while still fitting through the hole.
Tapatalking in traffic
-
i was thinking taking the tank and slicing it like a loaf of bread,2-3" thick rings would fold into the 6" hole i have. i bet 2 tanks would do it with 20 rings
-
Stupid question, but this is to reduce sloshing?
-
its a required tech item for Ultra4
crash protection with a half full cell not wanting to slam through and rupture.
-
use the tire grooving tool, then no deburring necessary
-
or the air shear or power nibbler.
The other idea, possibly more simpler i read about guys doing, cutting the tops and bottoms of 1quart oil jugs
-
http://www.alltechmotorsports.com/accessories.html
Call for a racers discount
-
would anything hard in the tank, like the pick-ups, be vulnerable to plastic chunks sloshing around?
-
Very much so. Anything like this has to be packed in there pretty tightly.
Oil quarts is probably the best low buck option in this vein, I'd seen them discussed before Wayne found his supplier. That, and things like bike water bottles.
-
car was running great. i backed off a bit this race and kept in comfortable control
heard what sounded like one of my headers fell off, then got sprayed with hot coolant. Hans and fire suit kept from steam burns on my back and neck. 2 fellow racers helped pull me out of the car fast. in the moment i was looking at the wrong dam gage and couldn't understand what was occurring. Radiator fan blade blew off motor. pinned gage, probably motor damage with this one.
Magivered one of my trans coolers in front of the radiator which allowed me to drive at 260-275 in 1/4 mile bursts with a cool down of about 5 mins off.
2 fast consistent laps, short cutted out to camp on lap 3.
no fuel issues to report.
-
next time you look for tires maybe consider these
http://www.rdmoffroad.com/General-Grabber-Competition.aspx
-
id like to stick to 40"s
-
broken fan blade is a random failure :o
-
not really. we have had 3 taurus fan failures so far this year. they cant take racing. time to move on.
-
the fan looked ok, most likely the retainer clip vacated. maybe welding it to the shaft would fix that not sure. wont know until it comes out, and thats about a 3 hour job.
-
debris getting to the blades ?
-
Mikes i think motor burned up and seized, Matts the fan housing broke muitiple times, we made a steel cage that seems to have fixed.
My first fail, motor bearings failed and seized, this one the blade assembly vacated from motor shaft. Mine is very protected and stays clean.
-
My motor went electrically open. still spins free.
-
Moved last night out of the trailer. Cylinder #2 def a COLD HOLE.
Boooo.
Probably do compression check after confirming no electrical issues, then pull that head, its the easy access side. it will be less than an hour of work on that side, and either a new head would fix (if combustion chamber isnt box of rocks) or with the top end removed, maybe the motor would lift out without chassis cutting. meh.
-
#2 has compression (same finger check pass as cylindar next to it) and spark.
plug is black and wet. still a cold hole with plug swapped.
not sure what that means? going to pull exhaust manifold and watch valves on cranking.
addition 5.3 doner or heads for 6.0 build acquired. 4l60e 4x4 core also came with it. 350$ complete
-
Swap wire and coil... Seems weird.
Score on truck.
Tapatalking in traffic
-
power washed and hot lapped back to the shop. starting to think this thing was on 7 cylindars for a while. it feels the same fine. #2 is dead.
still need to do compression but everything else is ok. no fire.
-
seems like there are alot of junkyard LM7 with Ebay turbo builds that are pushing 600hp
sounds like something worth investigation.
-
WTF
125psi compression in the #2 cold hole
running down the head back to front, 120,120,118
-
What is common, if you have a very high mileage engine... is low compression across the board. Low usually means anything under 120 PSI (although the service manual says 100 PSI is the minimum). If your engine has reached this point... it's also smoking from the quart of oil it's burning every few days. The other symptoms you'll see is that the idle will be very rough.
-
i guess next is swap an injector. maybe the wetness observed on the plug is oil and not fuel?
coil pack, wire, plug swapped to another cylinder, work fine after some at work suggest spark loss under compression.
-
must be fuel based on the above findings
-
injector resistance good. pulled injector. minimal debris in 30um inlet filter. flushed and verified function. cranked and fired motor with bank of injectors out of the intake. no fuel spray from the cold hole.
ground good to injector. pulled ECM pinouts... no dice for continuity to the pin it is supose too be!
wire harness failure.
bingo, jumped in a new wire for testing, V8 status returned.
now to assemble, and fill with water / fix radiator / remove trail fix hacks and see if head gaskets blown at temp.
-
Nice work!
-
Let's hope that was it!

yessssss.

I hope so! Damn thats weird. You find the actual short/ wire damage? Look fresh?
The change in exhaust note is whats staying with me here, would love to explain that.

-
How much steel is left on the diff?
-
diffs are still good from last year KOH prep. didnt really do any rock races this year...
in fact, the 14 bolt has the same oil in it since KOH2015 prep which is unheard of for me for a year.
-
stripped and fresh coat of paint on the chassis

-
did you pull the old one yet?
-
no- havent made a decision yet. steering is a pretty critical part of the car, and i want to make sure no contamination or changes occur to the system.
i took the mounting bolt out the back and Red RTV'd it, has stopped weeping. could run it as is. its been weeping for at least 2 races now.
-
made some orders, hopefully the last wave of $$ for this year
SPDT with center off water proof toggle switches ordered for front cube lights (amber/white) and for main Radiator fan (hi/low)
new fire suit
new helmet shield
more header wrap and clamps
full hydraulics replacement from surplus
OEM GM steering pump ordered
bulk punching balloons from ebay found
couple new air filters found similar sizes for cheap to play with

going to concentrate on getting this thing sorted this year to either sell or hit back racing hard again in 2017. By this winter, i may start on a new 2 seater multi use truck.
Racing is getting tiring, id really like something with summer plates on it that can take my abuse

If your going to sell 572, just repair the the tranny, let the new owner sort out the rest.
I agree that a dual purpose rig would be nice. But the fact is you crossed over to dedicated off road vehicles. Thats hard to come back from. No way could i tolerate 100:1 gear ratios and slow wheeling. Thats the only way those dual purpose rigs survive.
-
I've not experienced the full race car stage but I can see Gif's logic.
But sMike didn't say anything about going slow, just being able to plate and drive what he races. 4600 class calling?
I can't wait to see what sMike comes up with next! I've thought something might be changing soon... :P

unit relocated to the shop.
90% unpacked from KOH

got a 1/3 into trans pull and found the range shifter position sensor is cracked.....
stopped and need to do research. probably should have read trans codes, and possibly change this sensor or at least swap with the other one sitting on the shop floor. gona be pissed if thats all it is.
-
range shifter position? Is that something that reads shifter position in addition to where the control valve is in the valve body?
-
not a ton of info i can find (maybe my issue) i thought the mechanical lever only really actuates the park pin and detents for the other possitions. the sensor is what tells the trans what to do.
other tell tail i found with my no motion in any gear, check level engine off, then check level engine on in P, if same level, pump blown. if lower, pump is working.
-
Are you certain the pump runs in Park? I don't know for certain on the GM trannies, but I do know on the Mopars you must check in N. The pump is disengaged in P. Best practice to cool them off in N for the same reason.
-
i dont know. i think when i flush my cooler it pumps in any gear and P with engine on
21. No movement in any gear: pump failure, or total loss of fluid. Remove transmission and rebuild, or refill pan and find the leak. If out of fluid, avoid running the engine until the transmission is refilled to avoid pump damage. To check for pump failure, check fluid level with the engine off, then start the engine and recheck fluid level. If level does not go down when engine is running, the pump is broken
-
GM is check fluid in Park. Just checked mine yesterday and it said to check in Park on the dipstick

what trans your YJ have ryan?
can you unplug the two connectors from the range sensor and see if the trans works at all :) ?
-
I've been doing some reading lately on 4L60E. This is the trans I've installed in the Willys.
The "range sensor" is primarily for P & N safety switch and idle bump when in gear. It also provides dash with info for display.
All of that to say the trans will operate just fine without the "range sensor".

also considering going to a bipass air shock w/res on the front of my car.

go git it!
waiting on another response, probably DSC on my car. no numbers yet, not too quick on email turnaround.

i ping'd him twice to answer you. his # is 951 675 8224 and a phone call seems to go a long way. got a shock quote for me at 25% off fox retail in <24hrs from his local King Guys that have stuff on the shelf, as opposed to 10-12 weeks for fox to build.

ADS has very fast turn around!

We have a great relationship with our Fox contacts and I expect no delays in my time frame. The ADS guys seemed pretty relaxed and cool, but i have never seen them before at any event (or heard of them). Having Wayne and Chris come out to east coast U4 races and even private VA tune sessions seems invaluable to our needs.
-
they are west coast time, right? any times better or worse to call or something like 9-6 PT?
-
chris has always picks up his phone, he is usually banging on shocks when you talk to him though haha
-
broke free the Torque converter from my trans. pump inner gear failure occured. very sad, two little nubs of metal stopped me. interweb says 700r4 and 4l60e are powder metal inner gears. will have to see what this one is because its a rebuild.
-
gaskets and seals, along with a deep pan and filter, new range switch ordered. 141$ in parts.
Plan to swap pump and converter from spare core sitting on shop floor and run it.
-
ordered material for new front shock mounts. cant find any pictures or ideas near what i want to do so just going to do it haha
-
front springs should be 250/300 on a 10" CO now. just need to measure and adjust for my link dimension guesses.
12" 4 tube 2.5 bipass going where the old CO were.
-
swapped in another pump to trans, added a deep pan and filter. ready to put back in minus needing a new rear tail housing extension.
-
back in car and hooked up. turns both ways now. should be ready for a lot test after seat and zip ties.
-
back in business. full tear around shop all is well. snowing now :(
swapped out broken power steering cooler. also found a finger size rock that had one of my trans cooler fans locked solid, fixed.
race ready minus some fluids checks, and waiting for shocks.
Material for front link saddle mounts came in. shouldn't be more than a night of fab to get new shocks on when they show up.
-
Fedex from OH should get me a front cover by wednesday or so. Probably should prep it and pull the cover to make sure anything else isnt broken ha
race prep / VA prep will in volve grease job and bolt check, tool pack for wreck wheeling.
-
new front diff cover, grease job, bolt check, fueled and loaded in the trailer for 3 days of wheeling and a 50 mile race.
-
solid run on this unit.
prerunning i hit something the hardest i ever have that threw the front diff 3' in the air at 30mph. worse than the stump hit that failed the 3 link. kept on it, found another dented diff cover when returned to pit.
no race issues, treated the car like a stole it entire course, almost ran out of talent on the back straight near 81 but stayed in it and powered out of loosing the rear end down the ravine. Trans performed as it should with new pump install. power of car more than adequate. looked up and saw 67 in the woods straight the instant before letting up far beyond point of fear.
3 link feels loose, would like better brakes and front shock package is still a mess at low speed chop. seems to be best at 40mph over 6-10" chop but that takes commitment.
-
bolt check and loaded
fox has new shocks done

7 weeks? 8?
Glad they’re finally done. Oi!

the quote has 3/14 on it
ha, i didnt really push it. chris doesnt work with Wayne anymore either.

carrier bearing failure, loop support contained rear shaft and any other damage- did its job. probably could have continued but it sounded like rear gear set.
front right flat- looks like driving on it carefully at a slower pace saved the wheel.
-
considering changing to a 3" pillow block bearing. need to wash and tear down tomorrow night. bah.
-
rebuild rear shaft tonight and installed.
discovered the grease fitting is not to grease the alignment, but there is a grove and hole in the actual bearing that pumps grease into the internals of the pillow bearing.....
fail on my part.
cant believe all of our cars have lasted so long with out a few shots of lube there ever.

grease hole

should look like this with grease pushing out the bearing
This is what mine looked like new

shocks on the way

hopefully grabbing shocks from Arie's dock after work today!

shocks showed up today

That's some nice jewelry.

bipasses slid right in, have a plan and a start for CO mounts. probably need to get shorty lower eyes to help out for the CO's that should have been 10's instead of 12's
-
also found 4 lug nuts missing from the tire that got changed at line MT race lap1, a 5th lug nut was cross threaded and my new 20V impact took joy in shearing that stud easily.
no idea how many miles of wreck wheeling it was run like that
Hack shack racing no good for tire change help!

What is the sleeve w/ pinch bolts on the lower for?

coilover shock mount.

upper CO mount thats happy still hasnt appeared. all other work sorted and just about done with loose bolts.

2.5" long?
-
2.5 is plenty long.
staying with the allen set screw style is much easier for adjustment, what I have to do with 2 same size hexes above each other is kinda annoying.
-
well if it works out ill have a 5 pack to pick up Friday lunch time at granger and you can have 2 of them
-
side note, changes to my radiator shroud last go around with bolted in tabs and weld nuts, made changing a radiator fan a 20 minute job instead of a 5 hour job.
winning.
-
email this morning says granger has my 3/4" set screws ready for pickup. grab at lunch, install at line Mt. i welded a nut onto what snapped off, but left it so its mobile.
-
king pin adjusters in hand
my lord the 20'syr old parts girls behind the Granger counter- i gota will call more stuff there
-
king pin adjuster swapped no issues at line mt friday night. 2.5" is probably .5" longer than original, no big deal.
shock notes- much more compliant on little chop for a much better ride over all. still harsh on mid to high range / high speed impacts. Coil over gets warmer than bipass.

looking like 14bolt spindle replacement not as easy as i had imagined. looks like guys are slugging on at the tube. that sounds silly.

took the porto ban to the hub and sacrificed to get to try and save the spindle.
success! cut and ground about 1/2" of the spindle off and was able to remove spindle nut.
hub replaced, rotor on right side, calipers and pads on both rear sides changed. made a two bolt retainer clip to hold 14 bolt key way in on the trimmed down side. all good.
new brake line run, ready for bleed tomorrow and standard race prep for Saturday.

2 good wheels and a 3rd rock ring freed from shreded BFG pile
steering leak fixed, found suction line pressure gage on steering not up to the task of ridding along. removed and plugged.
window net removed and seat cleaned.
pulled hood and started looking at wilwood brake install, should be doable. job for another day. current brake booster might not have another race left in it before master rips off it.

one trep mounted up, 3 KRTs dismounted.
cracked a KMC trying to straighten, boo. might give it to one of you aluminum welder guys to fix.

no issues this weekend.
treps performed about what i expected :) they still have air in them which was the goal of the weekend.

RCVs getting really loud.
tore front end down for inspection last night.
4 or 5 pinnion chips so its going to get a new gear set tonight.
spindle bearings hosed of course.
RCV grease good and clean.

that's a low pinion Chevy axle being run upside down, right? which leaves it driving on the coast side of the gears when going forward, or would it be drive side since it's always "in reverse"? I guess drive side?
just sanity checking myself and thinking about gears...
-
same as yours but running backwards all the time on coast.
this setup was 0 to -1 back lash and a welded nut before KOH. one of the longest lasting thus far.

Have you considered to put in Dana 70 gears in it? Jana76
-
http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/axles-tires-wheels/946421-jana-76-tm-how-install-70s-your-60-a.html
-
I'm going out on a limb.. But I would assume your thinking 14 bolt due to the 3rd pinion bearing to reduce any deflection that might be going on in your gear set?
-
i have flogged the shit out of my rear gear set is more what im going on and its fine (runs backwards too)
The rear gear set in 572 was in 571 racing for 3 years, and now has been in 572 since new. its broken 2 stock 14 bolt shafts, and 1 yukon chromo shaft, 3 rear drive shafts, and a transmission. the thing has been zero maintance since new and still looks new lol
I have looked into the Jana70 long ago. dana70 parts are very expensive, custom bearings also. it makes gear changes 5-600$ and spool costs are were crazy when i looked into it.
i plan to do a full 40 spline conversion and 14 bolt center chunk, salvaging my solid knuckles and 3/4 ton brake kit, PSC ram / steering tire rods / Artec arms. The build will require new housing / truss, gear set, 40 spline spool, 40 spline Branik 300M shafts, CTMs, new Solid C's/kingpins, 40 spline hubs, 40 spline spindles and bearings, 40 spline drive flanges, 14bolt inner axle seals, 14bolt 1350 yoke.
its gona hurt but i dont see any other solution to my gear set issues and RCV issues.
-
Ok so be it! I just wondered and suggested maybe Jana 76 will get you by until you get to do the ultimate 14b front build.
Have you looked up "super king pin" Reid just released? Huge knuckles to run 05-up Ford D60 unit bearings and have more room for even bigger RCV joints (I think Rockwell sized) and the stub engages into the unit bearing directly so no drive slugs needed (similar to as dodge ball joint D60 unit bearings)
Also there's a good thread on which 14b housing will be best to use. I'll find a link to it shortly.

Found it. Yes RCV Rockwell joint fits. Beef! ;D
We just received our first batch of inner Cs so Kevin Yoder came by today to pick up a set for KOH. We stuffed his Rockwell RCV into the knuckle assembly to confirm fitment of the boot. He's off to complete his front axle now.

Or 1550 u-joints can be used also (Briank make them)

More axle pron
CTM 1550 joints 60 degree steering

seems like an ity bitty joint and tiny ears for all that stub.
its ok im sure they did all their FEA work up front ::)
-
that stub's got to be like that to get rid of a drive slug or lockout hub, I'm guessing?
-
that stub's got to be like that to get rid of a drive slug or lockout hub, I'm guessing?
Correct. Engages the hub directly.
Edit: and no more stub shaft bearings in the spindle to destroy.
-
front axle buttoned up. put a full tube of RCV grease in each side.
-
rcvs were 50% queiter, and in a few trail hours i noticed most of the grease was pushed out and the sound the same now.
found a huge fail on my part tonight. when i changed out the hub to one of the ones i got from chris, i didnt notice he took the outer bearing snap ring out to swap to his new hubs. outer bearing race slipped in 1/2" and no preload on the hub bearins. caused seal to leak. i almost left it. shaft and rotor only holding wheel true. shurly soon to failure.
found snap ring in old cut up hub in scrap pile, new seal, cleaned and assembled.
found a lot of link bolts loose tonight.
attempted to seal MC cover
lube job.
Have two tires to break down, mount 2 treps this week, fluid check, tool bag check, fuel.
plan to load Tuesday or Wednesday.
-
two KMC/KRT's broke down, two spare treps mounted
Fluids checked and topped off.
-
You running the smaller alternator? Why not the AD244 alternator? Big jump in amp output over the smaller one even when hot.

got some lift time last night
#8 exhaust dead COLD- looks like a new plug fixed it and running back on 8 again with some learning needed.
front output (rear 205) yoke replaced, drive shaft got a new ujoint and installed
front 35 spline drive slugs need replacing soon. tons of slop in splines. grabbed a slug from joes parts pile and fits 80% tighter.
front spindle nuts re adjusted
full grease job.
-
added 4 quarts of oil :o
severe blow by noted.
white, black, blue smoke on throtle rip
unplugged MAF and it also seems way happier on speed density
not sure blow by source but sounds good and def running on all 8 again.
-
severe grinding on left side noted
motor running great but blowing hard smoke
lots of flogging this weekend and still functional/
-
42" reds?
-
42" reds would probably take care of that grinding noise.
-
20"s will never happen so thats a no go
-
front diff inspection performed last night.
gear set in great shape.
Put the girdle cover on Bret traded me. not sure i like it- i don't have a set of pass through sockets to properly tighten carrier cap nuts. also seems like it will be a one time use once the front gets smashed by rocks and becomes un serviceable.
brakes / hubs steering seems in good shape. not sure what to occasional grinding noise is i was hearing.
-
RCVs? hahaha
-
they sound HORRIBLE but thats not the sound im worried about.
probably should have done a complete hub tear down but didnt have time. dont have spindle bearing parts on hand anyway.

You might find this helpful. Link to the girdle cover installation guide
http://www.jantz4x4.com/jantz.php?p=manual&pro=girdle&mid=jgi
Install four non-locking ½ x13 nuts, 80 ft lbs. I made a ¾ socket with the back end hand ground like a spark plug socket drive to reach the nuts. You then drive this socket with another socket and torque wrench.
-
or just weld two deep sockets together to accomplish same thing?
-
they sound HORRIBLE but thats not the sound im worried about.
You're not touching them because RCV will not warranty them until after they break completely?
-
im sick of touching them and rebuilding them.
they are too expensive to maintain, i have broken 5 shafts including a carrier damage. the splines are now so warn i have about a 80 degree difference of travel tire to tire.
planning to just run them till catrostrophic failure then sell the bits with the other 4340 set of RCVs i have.
Matts have ~500 miles on them and are starting to sound like mine.

pulled out of trailer to hook up pumper and window net
found water pump dripping from shaft seal. changed used spare from trailer. leaking from back bolts. ran to zone for a white box and changed that with success. that was at 10:30. Packed and prepped trailer, window net, pumper. nothing else prepped meh.
-
didnt really feel like killing tires so i was taking it easy. got wacked after i pulled over for a siren just after the first check point.
half mile later the carnage spread to a 14bolt yoke, rear shaft, air bumb, chassis damage, and gouges in my fuel cell enclosure.
swapped sway bar links to trackbar location after a 2" difference fit was eyeballed, drove the car out in 2wd to the road and back to the property.
-
back in shape minus two leaking diffs, a cracked chassis near rear three link mount, and tool bags are a mess.
new rear shaft installed
sway bar links installed
rear 14 bolt yoke changed
lube job
broken shaft rebuilt and assembled as a good spare

full front end tear down
fresh short side 300M inner warranty shaft swapped in
RCVs lubed
2 new inner axle seals
1 new spindle bearing
gears inspected and OK, new lube
brake master cyl cracks welded up and reassembled
picnic flat trep cleaned and re seated- appears no tire damage and hold air
needs fuel

needs a motor swap.
picking up another 5.3 later today.

good deal maybe, but 2000 would be cast heads i think
-
took a gamble on a 2002 5.3 today. got some extra parts with it that i can part out if its junk. meh
stripped down and almost prepped for swap. planned out how its going to happen. should be more than enough room to slide back, lift, turn 90 degrees and pull motor out of top after most of it is stripped down in the car, fuel cell, exhaust, sway bar, and coolers removed. rad and light bar should be find to stay. dont think its going to be the night mare i thought it would be, should have new motor running saturday.
-
almost started emptying fuel out of this guy tonight and then realized it didnt wash itself....
3 broken exhaust bolts extracted from heads, water pump faces cleaned up, coolant temp sensor hole taped to NPT.
super excited to have all good exhaust holes for once on an LS motor!
-
Can come over tonight and assist.

pulled the old van motor tonight! managed to twist and turn with only the addition of the light bar and oil filter removed past what i had planned. no chassis cutting was necessary.
some chassis work / inspection and should start on the new install tomorrow. hope to fire saturday!
-
New motor fired, sounds good. No knocks or tics, has good oil pressure and no apparent smoke with garage testing. No blowby on dips tick.
Just a few odds to wrap up and lock the cell back down.
-
total investment will be 14hrs. probably about 6 hrs more than our front engine cars.
-
i guess that includes some harness wire way fix, some exhaust wrap fix, and chassis fix near the 3 link that likes to crack
-
what are you doing with the old motor ?
-
what are you doing with the old motor ?
I have a 5.3, PCM, wiring harness stashed in my storage unit...
-
i tore it down tonight to take a peek
cylinder walls look mirror finish with no damage (cross hatches not visible)
I did find some pitting and damage on the 2 rear cam lobes and lifters
rotating the assembly, there is oil thats pushed up around the rings every rotation lol
John says the ring lands are probably cracked. all pistons you can move in the bore laterally 1/32-1/16" i don't know if that's normal with floating rings.
disassembling one of these things i have no idea how you could keep one clean with the intent of putting it back together with fresh parts. everything is dirt covered even with continuous shop vac action as you go.
-
I think you have to take it all the way down and clean every part before assembly. Trying to do something in the car? I even felt bad when I flipped my intake.
Interesting about the bore condition and oil intrusion. That seems like a lot of piston play but I think LS are known for piston slap when cold.

complete power wash round 2 completed with tins and seat pulled.
rear bumper rebuilt
more cracked chassis tubes repaired
spare idler and tensioner pulleys mounted on car
failed twice at patching trep from race. boo. tiny center tred puncture, like a ran over a piece of rebar.
-
got quick bolt check, lube, air filter cleaning, trans flush, fluids topped off and tool bags prepped today. ATF shine for the party.
-
suspected oil pump failure.
engine seized and locked up hard day 2 into hammers while returning home from shock tuning.
boo.
-
its very sad with the photo bucket thing when researching 14 bolt IFS bah

rebuilding motors is for the birds.
never - ever - rebuild a motor
What’s the plan???? ;D

i know im already cursing myself. not rebuilding just swapping a few parts. making a $400 motor a 1400$ motor, could be worse....

Yup. Could be making a 1250 motor a 2000 motor :-/

I love motors
-
i hate motors
i have about 6 at the shop id like at the bottom of a lake
-
extracted from trailer and pushed into shop, so it begins again.
-
motor pulled
-
new motor fired on a stand, good cold idle oil pressure. need to tack some mufflers on so i can hear any motor noise over open headers but looking good.
-
fired with mufflers. sounds good not tics or knocks cold idle 40psi
torn down and stripped for cam install Saturday.
-
o my.
she has a real car sound with the buggy exhaust 8)
needs about 20 minutes of work to drive out but in the car and fired.
-
wide ban O2 and log able AFR gage installed for HP tuners
OBD2 port added to the car
-
300M shafts put back in after last sand hallow breakage
-
loaded in trailer yesterday

need to get my tach working for next tune session
-
good enough for trails?
-
ya it should be ok to do some wheelin
-
You have Torque, you have dongle. What more do you need?
-
moved this thing today. i should do something with it. bah.
-
F&F 6/22-23?
-
That's the next brolite race! Double Header at Rolling W!
-
F&F 6/22-23?
sorry no interest in swamp moss wheeling still
-
moved this thing today. i should do something with it. bah.
Can I go pick it up and play around in it? ;D
-
everything is for sale. not much for rent
i must be getting old. more excited about the 49 completion and getting ready to work on the Ford. should have planned better for winter projects though lol June already is crazy.

I took you on the wrong trails at the wrong time of year. I’ll make it up to you if you ever come back :)

ordered this guy
https://www.ebay.com/itm/2300-2600-high-stall-4L60E-4L65E-300mm-Torque-Converter-1998-up-TMBX-TLBX-VJCX-/253683200166?_trksid=p2385738.m4383.l4275.c10
2300-2600 higher stall converter
-
pulled in tonight, trans removal prep started.
-
8 hrs later i now have a boat anchor stall converter instead of 2600rpm as advertised. fucking junk. FUCK
made a snap / pop first time i shifted it into gear, no power in any gear. F me
-
Fuuuuuck!

Could be front pump drive again? Or junk converter? I’d check super closely... :(

i broke the pump installing the new TC.
pulled everything out again this afternoon. need to source a new pump or replace pump rotor in this unit
-
freshly rebuilt trans pump assembly sourced locally for 75$ with core exchange
re assembled and fully functional.
Massive improvement with stall increase from stock ~1500 to 2600 now.
doesnt push through brakes and crawls the loading dock with ease again.
lets go wheeling / racing.
-
Who rebuilt?
-
my LS guy recommended Bart in Palmyra, he runs a small auto repair shop but does a ton of transmission build stuff. was very knowledgeable and had everything i needed, gaskets ect.

after basically loosing a season of racing and wreck wheeling im going to source a stock 5.3 block and R&R. i dont have the patience, funds, or expertise to tune a big cam 5.3 for ofroad use. i give in. sounds cool but just isnt cutting it for practicability.
-
Day on dyno with experienced tuner would fix.
My 2c
Mine won’t crawl either now. Won’t spin the tires in high range. Almost couldn’t drive up hills with rocks in high with the stock converter.
-
i could see wasting alot of dyno hours trying to explain our usage and problems. mine will do dyno pulls all day long. its the low end dynamic issues- not really going to experience that on a dyno.
-
Not all dyno use is top power runs. But I’ve not actually worked on tuning. Put foot to the floor
Anywhere under 1900rpm and my problem is 110% repeatable
-
hot cam and associated parts ordered for new 5.3 build....
What “hot cam†is it? (I’m curious and know very little on cam stuff)
-
585 lift
-
ah the sigh.
hoping to pick up another doner motor tonight.
sending the cam motor- F that thing. would like to wheel this summer.
maybe it needs to go into a hot rod haha
-
flat tire, dead dead battery and fuel cell pickup is plugged or froze solid.
in the shop.
-
i was just thinking its too hot in here
looks like you got another 5.3
-
my cheap ass didnt get my propane tank filled with unknown loss of my shop this spring. looking at a 150$ 7500watt 240 volt heater since i dont pay for electric.....
-
Get a 100 lb propane tank? That way you fill it as needed?
-
motor pulled.
-
new to it motor installed.
guess i fucked that up. idle wont come down from 1800 with a stock tune PCM, no indication of manifold leak anywhere.
sounds like somethings loose in motor also and banging / tapping. bah.
-
that sucks...
-
That’s no good.
-
only 60 lbs compression in #4 and #8
pulled the head and found a hand full of broken burnt plastic bits. both cylinders also had smashed bent spark plugs that im 90% sure were fine when i put them in. cylinder walls look surprisingly ok on that side. John says maybe mice got in the intake and chewed it up, debree got in and bent some valves.
might be a candidate for a freshen up and confirm that i hate building motors once more fore the cost of a head gasket, bolts, and a head. too bad i scrapped 6 of these heads 2 months ago. FML
note to self! add real mufflers and a radiator to start cart for a good functional check. 10hrs labor lost so far bah!
motor pulled again, ran over to johns- he had a 5.3 on his start cart ready to go and fired up for me. 150lbs on all holes. 300$ and sitting prepped in my shop ready to go back in tomorrow. could have killed my self tonight and got it in but decided not to. noticed i may have damaged transmission lines / fittings during this process, so i am going to tend to that before there is a motor in the way of easy trans pull.
-
the gnomes did not put a motor in this thing yet. bah.
-
all back together and good minus a gallon of water and side tins.
5th 5.3 sounds good and tight first fire.
-
lots of parts swapping and aggravation tonight.
confirmed bad IACV driver in PCM.
-
That’s whack. Wonder how that fried.
I haven’t sold my spare pcms but you probably have spares too. Not unlocked/tuned.
-
so some time spent with John this week
he burned me an "emissions pass" PCM (any 99' PCM is free for him to burn with his batch liscence
i kinda wana build a street U4 now lol. do home built, it would pass no issues. F NY
-
also, unit ready to wheel. all issues resolved and tins put back on.
-
short side RCV gave up yesterday, boo.
new motor hot oil pressure is no good.
otherwise had some good laps on the short course and fun at the picnic
-
Seems like it needs 40 $pline :(
-
ready for trail status.
outer clip on short side decided to not do its job, shaft moved into spool, sheared last 1/4" of shaft after moving an 1" inward.
stupid failure.
-
tried to change 2 shot rod ends on steering and gave up. shit is tight. spent more time than what it would have taken to Lathe out new tie rods. F it, let it be there.
-
this hawg took 27 gallons at the pump today.
Man i wish i could have plates on this. so run to rip down the road to the neighbor fuel station dirty
-
man had to go to page three to excavate this thread.
aired up some tires tonight and hawged a few laps around the property tonight at speed.
planned rear diff inspection and fix a slow leaking cover- found 3rd pinion bearing support in the 14 bolt smooshed over to the side. all else looks good preload wise and gearset wise in the diff.
front has a broken diff cover bolt so that got pulled also, all looks well in the front. will get an 1/8 turn on the king pin preload and new gear oil. found some sweet cracks just about all the way around the truss near 3link loading. will get a grind and weld and 2 small triangles added.
lube and fuel and good to go.
-
snagging two 50$ 14 bolts tomorrow, because you can never have too many 14 bolts.
23$ bearing on amazon is 5 days away meh
-
572 relieved from tractor duties now? ;D
-
multi use machine, but my cub has been doing great with tractor duties
-
meh, got impatient and need this pile off my lift- picked up two doner 14 bolts yesterday and harvested the bearing i needed that amazon says now will be delivered Monday instead of saturday. should have just had one sent from dennys in buffalo for 10$ less and probably 22hr fedex. meh
both diffs serviced. found broken hub bolts.
all heims on the car are loose wreck status. added some ATF to steering. need to scrounge though my broken RCV pile and see what spares i can make and what to send back.
time to un winterize the trailer....
-
had two fuel line failures last wheeling trip, and another when it was parked in trailer. i guess rubber thats 8 years old gave up.
replaced all fuel lines in system. loaded in trailer for Hallowheeling.
-
2 low rear tires and fired right up. pulled in the shop. had some good halloween candy still in the side pockets
-
another 14bolt shaft gave up this morning, and then shortly after took out the spindle, making it look like a rear stear car.
got tow trucked from CV hill climb back to my trailer.
short trip!
bah!
-
well with what i have and what i have to work with, im thinking im going to try and slug in a new tube/spindle. the 14bolt i have sitting here complete spare must be newer, both shafts are different lengths.
ton of work either way, but i think ill strip off the right tower, shock, link, track bar mounts, section in a new tube and burn it all back together.
should be a good days work tomorrow.
-
found not only shafts and hubs different, but spindles are different and its not going to work.
So swap entire axle brackerty and worry about getting brake brackets to work later, or find and 87 and back 14 bolt to steel a tube from.
nothing listed local. one 2 hours away that still needs to be cut from a truck. bah
-
JJ had a housing and I ran out and grabbed for 100$ credit on bill due for brolite gear work :)
same housing, but in the end decided to slug on just a spindle. hard part done, just need 4 tabs back on and reassemble.
-
what could possibly go wrong
-
Never considered a “Z” cut on a tube. Smart!
-
ya figured anything i could do to make this stronger should be done. the slug is thin wall to not block oil to the hub and not really structural more for alignment. i sectioned it in the middle there also because the tower for the track bar and bump pad straddles that area and will add a ton of structure.
hopefully will be a non issue and be good for years more of service.
-
finished this up and back to used up race car status
bah.
-
winter flat aird up
inspected on on lift.
looks in good shape other than a flat bump can and a couple loose heims up front. should be summer ready if needed.
-
needs fuel and a lift day after a couple wheeling trips.
-
cracked/leaking radiator changed out today. had to mod chassis for removal. it hadnt been out since original fabrication.
new colant
new oil / filter
have a leaking 14bolt hub thats going to need a speedy sleve.
more fluids and general maintenance on the list this week.
maybe some fresh tins if i get out to the hood this week for AL
-
finished up on board air install today with a york 210.
works pretty good. seems to be holding pressure fine, but i have a complete regasket kit if needed.
i had to dissasemble the entire york and soak it / break it free. it was seized solid.
also swapped on a new cirp style clutch. uses factory truck AC belt listing.
-
new air hose and install finished.
