howell TBI
« on: May 30, 2013, 04:59:16 PM »
have been getting some hesitation lately in my 258 with Howell TBI..

started all of a sudden with no changes or mods..  Jeep would seem as if it was hesitating at higher RPMs...

got a code 44... O2 lean

swapped o2... no change
fuel filter... no change

Fuel pressure at TB is right around 12 PSI...  low on the normal spectrum..
so at this point im assuming i have a low FP issue...

any thoughts?
I never wanted a red car.. always thought they were tacky and common...
I now have 4 very not common cars and they are all red.. :o

does it have a coolant temp sensor?

GM TBI is very fussy about the coolant temp.  If the ECM looses the coolant temp it goes into open loop.  (runs rich)

does it have a MAP sensor?  maybe a vacuum leak...

does it have a TPS?    might be giving incorrect readings to the ECM...

does it have a way to report error codes?   OBD real time

yes it has a coolant temp
map sensor is recently new and with new vac line
yes on the TPS
not sure about this... its an OBD1 system.. i do have a scanner..

Gif is right on with the coolant temp. I've seen the weirdest most unbelievable shat out of GM TBI with a bad ECT. On 571 and on a couple others since.

I spoke to Howell this morning..
Howell says the system is working perfectly and could be an issue with the stock ignition system.. TBI only controls fuel..
its basically a fancy carb..

Tune up and new ICM this weekend...

yeah my cynicisms kicked in and that’s what I thought as well... but they are really MORE than helpful all the times I have called..

and it makes sense what they said... the o2 only reports back what the engine is burning...
all sensors are at correct voltage and no failure codes.
If the FP is dead nuts and this just happened without changing anything, something else that motor relies on for a controlled combustion is off...
only thing not controlled by the Howell is the ignition...

either way.. it’s a direction to go and needless to say.. tune up parts literally grown on trees around here..

hey its not a Toyota.. ill get it run just as crappy as before

sometimes its the simplest things that are just made overcomplicated...

plugs, wires, cap, rotor...

runs like a champ...

but I did run 3/8th fuel line while I was at it, up from 5/16th.. and replaced the DuraSpark unit just because I had one...
