The U1601 came back immediately after days with batteries disconnected.

Smarty programmer says

CAN ERROR #121 WRONG COMMUNIC.
CAN DIAGNOSTIC 037f1a12fffffffff

And (obviously) won’t connect.

In another place it’ll say ERROR UNKNOWN SOFTWARE

The cluster won’t give any codes. Displays - - - - - - - - and then -done-

SIA didn’t respond to my query. May call them as a next step. Not sure if it’s worth calling a nearby dealership to check likelihood of revival with a reflash. I suspect they’d fail and throw parts at it.

All fuses in TIPM pass continuity

I did not disconnect things and start checking harness continuity. I haven’t looked up a checklist for that. If the right CAN bus wires got chewed I think I’d have no contact as opposed to a corrupt software code but I’m unsure of that.

Have found that the code is specific to anti-tuning security signatures in post-2009 Ecu bootloaders.

Some info here - last answer quotes the tsb that described the secured bootloader

https://www.justanswer.com/dodge/9vhae-07-2500-6-7-cummins-shut-off-driveing-one-day-u1601-code.html

EFILive has their workaround here, but I
1. Know nothing about efilive
2. Don’t have the base tune saved
3. Seems that being in this locked out state might complicate things

https://download.efilive.com/Tutorials/PDF/Cummins%20BootRSA%20Patch%20User%20Guide.pdf

How did I get here though?
I don’t have a fresh tune loaded.  There’s a chance I reloaded the same tune I was already running during earlier troubleshooting, so it had 200-300 miles running since then, minimum. Likely 30,000+.

I would not be surprised if unstable power and fast ecm reboots caused reevaluation of the bootloader or maybe flipped one but somewhere in storage to make the RSA signature incorrect. So this u1601 could still just be a symptom of a wiring issue somewhere.

Fire is looking good, innit Mark?

Costs enough in parts and licenses to almost entirely chase me away from self solving with efilive.
But if it’s any sort of an ongoing problem, 2-3 times of someone else fixing it and I’m probably there.  Given that cause is unknown….
Their box 625, includes 2 VINs. 125 per 2 addl VINs
Dodge Cummins tuning license 450
(+Another 450 to touch GM stuff)
bench harness almost certainly needed in my present state 400-600 or I’m hunting for Ecu connectors to make my own

I’m also sending out feelers to Cummins parts posts inquiring of computers and harnesses and TIPMs

None of these issues have ever presented in the rain or wet nor after rough roads or any hard maneuvering. Would be a weird harness problem to happen on straight smooth dry roads.

You will be better off to replace the ecu. that code on the 4945387 pretty much means its at end of life. Get an  updated pn 4945611.

Well OK, then. Done.

End of next week give or take I will know if that was the right call.

Michael,
I am working on processing your order for the ECM. Unfortunately, there is a massive core shortage for this ECM, and there is no availability anywhere in the country.

We do have the option to send your core in to be rebuilt. Here is what that would look like for the R&R service on core:

- 10-day turnaround on unit, does not include shipping time

- If your core is NOT rebuildable you would receive full credit minus the freight and a $100 test fee

I sure feel better gambling $250 one way than $100 the other way. I don't like this option...

id much rather find them a core from a yard or ebay and send that then send yours to the wind and hope for the best or at least return of it.  that sucks

Trying another vendor (usdiesel first time, now Dale's), and found another reman that claims in stock and universal to all part numbers with no core charge for 1600 at https://www.fs1inc.com/2007-dodge-ram-truck-cummins-6-7l-engine-computer-pcm-ecm-ecu-programmed-plug-play.html

ebay is relatively thin pickins for cores, fbm has struck out. could try car-part. I have never seen I Cummins in our local yards.

only a 3 year part on my truck too, 07.5-10.

HP tuners says

07.5-09   Dodge Ram/2500/3500/4500/5500 6.7 Cummins (Diesel)

is supported

HPT repository there are only diesel Auto trans base files for 07 and 10.

I looked at both files (free to DL and view) and no option to change to manual trans.

may be worth trying to see if i can pull your file (i forget if you have no OBD comunication working) and then try to force it to another PCM (100$)
