starter seeming worse and worse.
turbo has a failing seal, it's eating oil. investigating options on that, I don't know if changing seals is a thing. I haven't torn it apart to see if there's any play. the turbo only has about 50-60,000 miles on it.

I think turbo is in fatal status. it sounds like a radial engine inertial starter every time engine speed climbs from idle. That replaced a clatter that sounded like a bad belt pulley bearing over the course of about 10 miles while I was considering turning around and going back home.

these are fatal noises. really cool sounding fatal noises.
Don't have any functional turbos on the shelf. Just 2-3 that need remanufacturing of some flavor with stuck vanes or lots of shaft play

SUPER embarrassing, but this was a false alarm. a piece of rust came off the worst fender and was rubbing the sidewall of the tire. it was the little lines on text of the sidewall that were making those terrifying noises. I went around and around and around on this thing feeling wheel bearings and brakes and couldn't find anything that matched how bad it was. Finally I caught the shiny sidewall of the tire right in the light and remebered the 4" long strip of fender that I ripped off when I got out of the car at home 🙄

so dumb.

still starting to car shop anyway. that's a proven lack of faith. so I'll drive it to Ithaca tomorrow for a conference 👍

Both rear calipers locked up hard
Serpentine belt broken
Ac might be seized
Shifter won’t engage reverse

this thing has been in the way for a year. that got it touched a little as shit is stacked up and a lot of things need work. need to be able to move it out and move it on its own.

Charged the battery and found it to be shot. swapped starter solenoid to take care of broken stud (the earlier hard starting was a loose battery cable on the starter, and the stud snapped off as soon as I touched it with a wrench). battery tray didn't want to come out, broke 1 bolt off and ripped one through after it spun the riv-nut and wouldn't move (out of 4)

alternator feels seized? I thought I just did one on this, but I don't seem to have posted about it. thought sure I did with the weird ratcheting overrunning alternator pulley. wonder if that was Sarah's automatic? AC isn't seized, but clutch is rusty. All of underneath is rusty, from being rusty before plus how humid the shop was this spring and nothing getting road-blasted cleanup. Hanging crunchiness everywhere underneath.

Swapped new injector nozzles on quicker than swapping the used alternator on. But hopefully ready for full time duty.

So USED alternator. sounds like it was off the Beetle 1.8t, so relatively low mile.
Guess I should try harder. I bet I have a serpentine belt in stock.

tensioner is siezed and won't move. lots of force on alternator and it won't move.

see if it starts and goodby from the shop for a _while_
