Clatter and spring noise from LF is a broken spring.

Getting struts out of knuckles sucks as much as working in a driveway. I’m too old for this shit.

Re-timed this today. Haven’t checked the graph on the computer but if correct cam and pump were retarded by 25 degrees or so. Hope it’s spot on now. That’s an annoying job. It did start and sound right as soon as it could run. And I dumped a pint of oil on the driveway from the valve cover by doing so haha

Just a sneeze outside perfect on the graph.
No codes. Ready to inspect.

EXCEPT.

Glow plug relay or socket failure and both need to be replaced. Socket doesn’t seem a common failure item. Was setting code for glow plug relay unexpected state or somesuch and starting hard in the cold. Was gonna swap golf and wagon, didn’t need to.

push them both out with a soldering iron.  clean.  slip on two pieces of heat shrink, connect externally, solder if you want, shrink.

The male side is the relay itself.

Because cold start is a smoke show without proper glow.

I’d need to really fuck up my harness to run a different relay. Each plug has its own output. One big feed that’s melty, 4 outputs, +/- triggers and some sort of reference pair for monitoring.

Big pin is hot and the case is bulged in one spot.

Joe G mailed his relay and plug up. Got here in a day usps, sweet.

Backed all the terminals out of the old plug and swapped on the new one with a yellow heat shrink butt from existing to replacement big terminal. All good to go!

Took a bit to get all terminals free but once I figured out the method it wasn’t bad. Did arc one before I disconnected the battery. Apparently it wasn’t a direct ECU pin since it still runs and i have no codes so it’s all good!

Maybe inspectable once monitors set. 8 months and counting from when I registered it.

coworker Davis is borrowing this while his '13 SportWagen is in for body work (tree fell on it). Body work going longer than expected, so this is making a CT trip for his Christmas. Davis and I are splitting shop rate on doing a bad front wheel bearing, that should be done today and it'll be a quieter beast.

It started great last night and this morning. I moved the Golf last night and it started great too 👍

Shop doesn't like the tint (it's a wagon, front windows are clear, the rest are limo dark. I'm quite certain that's fine) and also doesn't like one burned out plate light and a long throw on the ebrake handle. Apparently it has a second, symptomless broken spring too (right rear - I swapped left front a month ago)

I guess this is what other people deal with, huh? So no sticker.
10 day strong. Hope it doesn't cause Davis any issues - eyes open on the way into it though.

I guess my tint info is either wrong or misremembered.
'passenger car' station wagons must allow 70% transmissivity on rear side windows.

Yep, not on passenger vehicles.  In this day in age, I wonder if I could identify as someone with one of those medical exceptions :scratchchin:.

Me too.   Fortunately, GA is very, very lax about that.

Love my dark windows!
