« on: August 26, 2014, 11:49:05 PM »
spins 12"

face feed broke
cross feed works

nice 110 machine that surprised me what it would put up with.
some tooling and gears and such

no longer needed
make offer.  it can be slid onto a truck bead, probably 400lbs or so with stand.
replaced belt with link belt, works great.

Smike... I am shopping around for something like this.

It sounds like you found it useful even for a smaller machine?
What did you find were it's biggest limitations?
I am assuming it did not have a quick change gearbox, did that bother you at all?

I don't have room for something much more than a benchtop unit like this, but am tired of working like a hack to get around not having anything and would like to learn about this stuff.

you can do a ton on a small lathe, even if it doesn't have threading box.  Lathe threading is really annoying and you probably wont ever need to do it more than a few times in a decade lol   i really only use the box for knurling which is fun.

things to consider:  HP, pass through bore, swing size.

my older lathe was a 1.5hp 3ph on a static converter so basically 1hp on single phase 220.  it was pretty decent but could have used more power

small lathes you will never find something that has a 3" pass through, 1.5" if you lucky  (drive shaft work).   a good steady rest and live centers will get you far though if the bed is large enough.

my new lathe is 3hp on a rotary converter and loves it.

i wanted a big enough swing to do rotors or axle C's.

a shitty random old lathe can be made pretty decent with some good tooling / holder upgrades.  most you will find they just haven't been lubed, maintained, adjusted and just need some playing around with to tighten up.  its not like we are doing aerospace work here.

buy the biggest one you can fit! store shit on half the bed normally but have machine if you need it lol

Thanks Smike!

Friend of mine said the same about lathe threading, annoying and time consuming. He almost always uses a die holder in the tailstock instead.

Unfortunately, I don't think anything I will be able to fit in my shop is going to have more than 3/4in through bore. Most of the machines I am looking at are 10 or 12in swing.

This just got listed, I am going to try to scoop it up.

try to get a 3 jaw chuck.  you will use that 99% over a 4 jaw
