i think it has half in countersunk bolt that hold a 1/2" peice of HDPE with 1/8" steel under that, then there is a steel frame work with nuts that sits in.  im sure its was far beyond serviceability though or it got chagned / steel welded over it

That original design does ring bells. I think the edges later got captured to avoid peeling the hdpe to say nothing of the condition of the bolts.

Don’t have snap ring pliers at home. Need another set. Time to continue to build three full sets of the important tools. Tired of not having everything in one place.

Anyway, tore down the tcase that was in the car and the spare a bit. Spare is a little contaminated but not bad. Case has wrong mounts. Good internals though.

Rear shifting parts all look 100. Thought my issue was the rear not wanting to stay in low. I looked through this thread and didn’t out myself. Must have been in the event thread or on FB. I’m sure I posted about it somewhere.

I’ll have to do a full tear down and close comparison. Can’t see shit on the front without getting the gears split and I got tired of fighting without the right pliers and on the ground like an animal.

there's a little more motion in the rear low gearset on the rear output shaft than I'd expect. Forgot to compare that to the spare case at the time.

I was looking for rounded off teeth or bad shift forks specifically. Good news on that front.

C clip was knocked out of its landing. I’m going to gamble that it will stay put and reassemble. I will buy a spare and put it in the car. Should be able to be done in the car if needed by pulling the rear driveshaft only. Gear oil and cleanliness would be a concern but otherwise doable.

May be shaking down in Attica this weekend. Trans and power steering fans currently known bad. Should have already had replacements on hand but have NOT ordered yet. Dummy.

Fans in. Not wired. Case assembled. Not in. Welding and grinding and assembly tomorrow.

And because I’m gonna care about it when I want less rear ride height and more preload with the spare moved to the top.

14x175 over 16x225 right now.

Sway bar is marked as 13/16 and measures 0.85”

So much nicer out today!
Have a little loud work left. Remaining:

Notch floor panels a sneeze from frame tabs
Seats
Belts
Wire front fans
Zip tie upper coolant hose over fans
Grease rear driveshaft
Grease front axle (joints and knuckles)
Side tins

Rear bumper
Tire carrier
Lighter rear coil rates
Stiffer swaybar

Transfer case repeated issue today. Rear will not stay in low.

Fuel issue diagnosed.  See-through lines rotted out and brittle. Cracked and not leaking under vacuum but would air lock feed side.

Great day of playing around. Sarah enjoyed too. Would have been better if drier but I’ll take it.

Fuel lines (tank to valves - critical; all - PM)
Fresh 1/4” ratchets for seat belts, passenger failed
Tcase rear output snap ring. Repeat issue.
Spare carrier
rear bumper
Tune for happiness and power under 2500rpm and less stalling
Reduce mud

Will try to pull apart and diagnose tcase asap.

Miiiight go to Rausch with the full crew (Sarah and titan) if I can get a better fix on that.

I’m very nervous about being away from work for Crandon the first week of classes. I’m definitely not updating my [out]dated safety items before then to race. Dog plus joe fuel economy affect motivation. Sarah can’t get out of work for that to join in.

crosspost from fb

Need some coil spring sanity check. I need a lighter spring in the rear. It's been marginal, limit strapped to about 1/2" preload, and without the spare hanging all the way off the back now, I need to lose about 2" of shaft on top of that. I'm showing about 9.5" on a 14 and want to get closer to 7-7.5. Shocks on the axle and close enough to 1:1 as not to matter.
14x175 (@10-7/8") over 16x225 (@13.5") now, that's combined rate of about 97#. Spare isn't on and will add about 60# centered over the springs.
A friend has some springs I could swap right on, but slightly odd lengths.
could do a 14x150 over 18x200, that's a little softer all around at 86# with similar progressiveness and almost certainly solves preload fully.
Corner weight math
(16[free height]-13.5[compressed height])*225[rate]/6.5[desired squat]
tells me my target overall rate is (varying inputs between compressed height of 13.25-13.5 and squat of 6.5-7) 80-95#. Longer spring gets me preloaded right. I have about 3" of thread above the spring now.
