Title: The trip north!
Post by: mr.mindless on March 04, 2013, 01:03:31 PM
Matt,
When can I take a look at the schnozz of White Whale II? I really need to build some bumper brackets this week, unless I could on just fabbing something up at Aaron's after I fly down.

Tues-Weds are definitely good for me, otherwise I'll work around your schedule as needed.

You were expecting me Saturday? Oops. I was doing taxes and other fun paper things.
He texted me an hour ago that it's parked for a bit, going to try to take a look at it there tonight. won't be able to build anything, but at least I'll see what can be/needs to be done.

I'm getting over another sick myself. That's twice in as many months! boo.

did you look to see if a wheel dolly rental would be comparable?

uhaul tow dolly is cheap...

$200 for a uhaul dolly.  tire size for strapping is not mentioned. weight limit is within reason for no drivetrain. no idea if width is allowable. Wikipedia puts width at 79.5" but that's got to be body not track.

Front-wheel or all-wheel drive vehicles must not weigh in excess of 3,450 lbs.
Rear-wheel or four-wheel drive vehicles must not weigh in excess of 3,900 lbs and you must disconnect your driveshaft.
Must have a maximum outside-to-outside tire width of 72"
Must not exceed a body width (at the doors) of 75" Note: body widths over 72" must use late-model U-Haul Tow Dolly (identifiable by silver galvanized color)
Low-hanging equipment on the vehicle being towed such as spoilers, air dams, ground effects, etc., may be damaged by contact with the tow dolly during loading and unloading. Make sure there is enough clearance for these items.
Tow lights (tail/stop/turn) required at rear of vehicle being towed

just tell uhaul your towing a FIAT...

I used a uhaul dolly once.. got to the Jeep and it had 33x12.5

strapped as best I could and let air out till i got a couple wraps on the ratchet..

I would throw a tape on matts and drop by the closest uhaul and mock it up..

I hate flat towing

Outside sidewall width on my truck is 80". No way.

1/2 x 1 7/8, 1.5" depth clearance

I think that'll be fine from eyeball to just run a bumper bolt through.

Tow bar and various truck goodies all packed and ready to ship down ahead of me. Need to remember to hit FedEx tomorrow.

Need to stop by Matt's truck again to double check myself, and grab a couple long gr8 bolts as a backup plan.

I'm using Aaron's tow bar; shipped the in tow lights and wiring adaptor, draw bar, and some tools down to him yesterday.

Couldn't get a sticker in advance (computer wanted to flag it for review - ram 3500 wasn't in the available dodge models for some reason. That plus a typed VIN meant no sticker), so it'll be coming home on SC temp tags instead of on my plates with dealer written reg (requires inspection sticker # for the paperwork).

Wait.  What are you towing?  I thought the DB deal was DOA.  Driving the Eagle down and towing it back?

I'm a little lost, as usual...

Walmart will destroy capitalism.....

An oxymoron comment, but if you think about it..very very true...

I don't like their business practices and I choose not to support them. Just like I don't like CFA's stance an support on several issues and choose not to do business there either. I can see one of each from my lunch stop. Cfa smells really good....

How does she tow better than the DB?
Title: The trip north!
Post by: mr.mindless on March 16, 2013, 01:17:37 PM
Shifting is hard!

I can't compare towing. My empty goose is similar weight to this 2500 shell and that doesn't tax my truck at all

This thing is plain dumb empty. Bak in town safely an Chadley's truck is dropped at his shop. Wife loves it (it's hers)

Had some issues in a snowy parking lot w the tow bar. 2500 headlights were hazy and needed replacement anyway. Damnit.

Better than the dumpbus's second day of ownership crash by a long shot!
