Title: AR Build
Post by: KingtheZJ on January 24, 2013, 09:23:24 AM
Anyone know anything about ARs? good lord they have a shit ton of parts

So far i have:
Bushmaster forged lower
AAOK Flat top A4 upper
AR-Stoner BCG

I'm thinking ill do a 20" bull barrel thanks to the new shit about threaded barrels and muzzle brakes. I'm thinking a 16" is 16" total and would not be legal if I chopped it at the threads and had it crowned.

I'm not registering it so it cant have a "pistol grip that protrudes from the gun" so i'll be using this

I know, I know. Great time to build one  ::)

not sure if serious....

its an ok compromise. i'm sure it wont feel as good as the regular vertical grip, but i'll live with it and I like how it looks.

shit, its out of stock....

apparently wrapping the grip in one of these so you cannot put your thumb behind the grip is acceptable...in CA that is.

well isnt this whole thing just fawking stupid...

I'm in a similar barrel dilemma.

Rock River doesn't make a non-threaded barrel until you get into the bull barrel/varmint barrel line.

Looks like I'm going to buy a complete upper with a stainless varmint barrel to stay legal.

Interesting grip link as well.

this shows as in stock.

as i see it i have 3 options.
1. bull barrel
2. using a 16" threaded barrel and welding on a flash suppressor that has been cut to the end of the barrel. but i think that would probably look stupid.
3. taking a 20" threaded barrel and chopping it somewhere behind the threads and getting it re crowned.

cheapest seems to be option 1

Yankee Hill Machine sells a 18-20" upper with a clean crown. Thats what I build mine on. Great barrel though it may be pricier/longer than you wished.

Sadly I'm actually working on a deal to sell my parts off otherwise I'd offer it to you. If it falls through though I'll let you know. Only has 600 rounds through it.

i dont know much about guns or politics, but before people start chopping barrels and spending $ on stuff to accomodate the ban, what is the chances it goes before congress or whatever and is deemed unconstitutional and all this isnt even neccessary?

Well the threaded barrels are already illegal in NY. You are allowed to have a muzzle break but it must be pinned and welded so it is not removable. Chances this all gets reversed? pretty darn slim IMO

I'm holding out hope for this.

I have six of them.  I'd be glad to help out with any function issues or questions.    I do not know what's legal in NY or not (since I live in Georgia), so I'm not going to be involved with that.

btw, if anyone has an upper for sale, I'm looking for one. Would absolutely love to have a 20" A2 with triangle handguards.

I hold out hope that the courts find at least portions of this unconstitutional but I doubt it will all be fully reversed. The old NY and CA restrictions have passed scrutiny...

Thanks, I expect I will be taking you up on this.

These parts are taking forever to get here!
