My buddy's uncle and grandpa own Gun Trader in Lakeville

I know they are lean on muzzle loaders right now. Lots sold recently. There is a nice TC that we put on the floor when I was down there Thursday. I'll call tomorrow and see if they still have it and get specs and pricing.

Remington 870 is a pretty durable gun.  We have them in our patrol cars.  Synthetic stock, 14 " barrel (LE only).  They hold up to the abuse as long as you maintain them.

Agreed. I trap shoot with both an 870 and an 1100. Unless I'm going for multiple birds, I prefer the 870.

Maverick is the cheapest of the Mossberg line. I can get it cheaper than that if its one you want. You'll want to play with it in a store before you buy it though. Not sure you will like the quality. I can get you a new Mossberg 500, which is probably your best bet. I'll get a quote from my guy for both.

I've been watching that one for a price drop, but dont have the cash. SPAS are the king of the tactical shotgun, but even being a preban thats a little steep.

Didn't clicky the link but don't folding stocks have to be pinned in NYS?
only applies to semi auto guns made after Sept 1992. that one listed says its a preban, so is exempt from all Assault Weapons Ban rules.

excuse my dumb ness but is a pump considered a semi auto?

I really like the folding stock thing, i have never seen that before.

a pistol grip 12g seems like no small mans device, but flexibility is nice when needed.

Folding stocks are quite nice for close quarters/long range versatility.

Pistol grip is no big deal to shoot.  Just not real accurate.

Post by: KingtheZJ on December 14, 2012, 09:52:47 AM
pump is not semi auto. semi auto is any mechanism that uses the pressure from the expanding gas to eject the spent casing and load the new one. so that dosnt include a pump, bolt action, or lever action, which all require mechanical input to load a new shell.

folding is 100% legal on any pump no matter what else i has done to it. but if its semi and manufactured after September 14, 1994, it can only have one of the below features
   - Telescoping or folding stock
    -Pistol grip
   - a fixed magazine capacity in excess of five rounds
-an ability to accept a detachable magazine

more info on shotguns pertaining to the AWB
http://www.nyfirearms.com/forums/laws-politics/4509-new-york-state-assault-weapon-ban-faq-part-3-shotguns.html

another option is a telescoping stock, though a true folding stock is probably better for CQB.

FTR, any shotgun with a pistol grip is illegal within the city of Rochester per city law. Buffalo has laws too, but no one else around does.

This shotgun can be run as a semi-auto or pump gun at the flip of a switch.

Agreed. I have yet to find the need for a semi shotgun. Other than double tapping flying birds, Im happy racking the pump and back on target.

That said, my buddy has a saiga 12. I would buy one in a heartbeat. So fun.

I like gun shopping, Pro-Gun here in Victor is a good store, has a lot of rifles and handguns.

AllStar tactical in Webster is a great custom builder, I bought a Spikes lower from them a while back and was going to make a kit, http://www.ar15-kits.com/ from there.

While I've been told its not a true NYS law, most stores have the policy to only accept a NYS license or a 'touching state'.

Also, the Dome Center normally hosts a gun show every 4months or so. I don't know if they still will be since it was bought..

Winchester 1300 Defender blows all of the other pumps in speed and smoothness - even the Remy 870.

I've had a Winchester 1300 Black Shadow since 1994 for hunting and got a Defender a couple years ago just to shoot and as my main defense weapon.  Good luck finding one though, they were discontinued in '06.

The new version is the Winchester SXP Defender, but it doesn't hold as many rounds as my 1300 Defender.

All for guns and gun rights... Been a member of the NRA since I was 10 and started with daisy air rifles...   But there is a sane and insane level for everything...

Assault weapons and ammo dumps that rival small nations militarys are pushing it IMO...

perhaps revert to the 1950's and throw all the loony toons in a hospital for life?

I think we can do better...  on both avenues...

whatever you want to call it.. its a gun made for assault, not defense.

Ive been reading a lot lately on this topic, a member of JF was a first responder to the Newtown shooting, and that singular instance aside its amazing the statistics from our "great nation" compared to the rest of the civilized world...

Im not super politically active on this matter nor is it a new cause of mine... but when you look at it without prejudice or bias.. it really makes no sense..

Why do you or anyone else get to say what the AR-15 is intended for? If Americans give up the right to own a firearm, whats next? Maybe 350hp is too much in a vehicle? Ban "fast" cars, speed kills far more people than guns. Drop the speed limit to 40mph, lots of lives saved.

Maybe the right to freedom of the press should be abolished, or restricted. Maybe freedom of speech should go away, it causes too much trouble.

Make guns illegal (any kind of gun) and it ends up like drugs. Illegal, but you can get one anywhere you want, unregulated.

Mental illness is the problem, and just letting it go unchecked is what the problem really is, not law abiding citizens.

But whatever, the politicans are bought and paid for, whatever the banks tell them to do, they will. Dosent matter what any citizen or group thinks. Follow the money, it always wins. There is a plan to make us sheeple, nobody cares.

No it's not, an "assault weapon" is nothing more than a few select accessories.  Same gun, same caliber, same accuracy.  It's a BS, make the public think your doing something term.

the constitution is organic.. it changes when it needs to... slaves would still be slaves etc..
the spirit of the 2nd amendment wasn't that any idiot could be armed to the teeth..

It would be ok to restrict and monitor a human with mental illness but arguably not the same for guns or whatever..

the arguments are circular and throw out the conspiracy and big brother attitude and your left with both sides having compelling and legitimate arguments..

its an issue and a problem... with no good solution..

NON POLITICAL...

A baseball bat could be labeled an assault weapon when used in an assault.

you're factually wrong...
an assault weapon has a clear definition (http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/assault%20weapon) where as in an assault you can use various weapons, vehicles, body parts, or yes.. even an assault weapon...

stickler for syntax despite the fact I cant spell
Title: Re: 12g pump
Post by: Ryan on December 26, 2012, 08:18:36 PM
I think assault weapon has many meanings, the one in that link is a new meaning. A true "assault weapon" needs to have a selector switch. But again, I guess things change. Assault weapons may include other weapons by the time it gets thru all the steps to ban them.

Definitions
A genuine assault weapon, as opposed to a legal definition, is a hand-held, selective fire weapon, which means it's capable of firing in either an automatic or a semiautomatic mode depending on the position of a selector switch. These kinds of weapons are heavily regulated by the National Firearms Act of 1934 and are further regulated in some states. (See machine guns.)

As Ryan said, the definition of "assault weapon" is completely muddled. The federal ban defined it clearly as a list of things that pretty much wring out to "scary looking rifle." That's silly and meaningless. It's been further contrived through mass media misunderstanding.

There's zero practical difference when it comes to throwing lead at a high velocity of whether that weapon has a bayonet lug, or pistol grip, or adjustable stock... Yet we'll ban one and not the other. (These are both Ruger Mini-14 .223s)

The preban definition of Assault Weapon as a select-fire (full auto/burst/semi) rifle using mid-sized cartridges is far more accurate, but it's still a silly descriptor. Something like Tactical Rifle would be more accurate and meaningful (the latter Mini-14 above is billed that way on the site where I grabbed the picture from). But that's a reasonable title instead of a fear-mongering one, and thence not as useful to those with an agenda to push.

AR? Or AK
I guess doesn't really matter. Distributors are cleared out of everything in the whole country. You could try for a stripped lower (the actual "gun") but probably paying 50% over month ago market value. Watch armslist , sometimes there is something reasonable. But most are listing a 800$ AR for 1800$

If you're looking for a .22 I can highly recommend a Marlin. I own a couple already and love them to bits. The Ruger 10/22 is a fine rifle, but I would recommend Marlin Model 795, its a great reliable gun and generally cheaper than the Ruger. For plinkers I prefer pump or lever actions, with my favorite being a Marlin 39a.

Maybe I'll start asking around for a ridiculous price for my AR and sell it off ;)

You have to register you now illegal guns, limit your 10-round magazines to 7, re-register your handgun permit every 5 years, and get a background check to buy ammo. One thing that is cool, is that there are protections, if your county deems it prudent,  if you want to have your handgun permit info private, so you won't end up in a newspaper like earlier this month.

Seems so. I read that will the the case for a year then you will have to have mags that are limited to 7.

Also seems my p22 is illegal. Has a threaded barrel. Nice.

Same here with the p22 as the saying goes they can pry it out of my cold dead hands

Could you guys have the treads machined off the end of the barrel if you wanted to be compliant ?

Anyone happen to know if that background check process has been established yet? If I wanted to sell something, how do I make the check?

There is a little cap that fits over the threads. I think I'll just TIG it to the barrel with a tack on the bottom and call it good. If a LEO ever has a problem with that I'd be happy to take it to the SCOTUS.

No, it's not. You want to sell a firearm? I would run it through an FFL just to be 100% legal.

Kinda what I thought. Maybe I'll just start calling that number the FFLs use... and when they ask for my FFL number I'll just explain I don't have one but I still need to do a check :P

PRIVATE SALE OR DISPOSAL OF FIREARMS, RIFLES AND SHOTGUNS. 1.
IN ADDITION TO ANY OTHER REQUIREMENTS PURSUANT TO STATE AND FEDERAL LAW,
ALL SALES, EXCHANGES OR DISPOSALS OF FIREARMS, RIFLES OR SHOTGUNS  SHALL
BE  CONDUCTED IN ACCORDANCE WITH THIS SECTION UNLESS SUCH SALE, EXCHANGE
OR DISPOSAL IS CONDUCTED BY A LICENSED IMPORTER,  LICENSED  MANUFACTURER
OR  LICENSED  DEALER,  AS  THOSE TERMS ARE DEFINED IN 18 USC

S 922, WHEN
SUCH SALE, EXCHANGE OR DISPOSAL IS CONDUCTED PURSUANT TO  THAT  PERSON'S
FEDERAL  FIREARMS  LICENSE OR SUCH SALE, EXCHANGE OR DISPOSAL IS BETWEEN
MEMBERS OF AN IMMEDIATE FAMILY. FOR PURPOSES OF THIS SECTION, "IMMEDIATE
FAMILY" SHALL MEAN SPOUSES, DOMESTIC PARTNERS, CHILDREN  AND  STEP-CHIL
 DREN.
 2.  BEFORE  ANY SALE, EXCHANGE OR DISPOSAL PURSUANT TO THIS ARTICLE, A
NATIONAL INSTANT CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECK MUST BE COMPLETED BY A DEALER
WHO CONSENTS TO CONDUCT SUCH CHECK, AND UPON COMPLETION  OF  SUCH  BACK
GROUND  CHECK,  SHALL  COMPLETE  A  DOCUMENT, THE FORM OF WHICH SHALL BE
APPROVED BY THE SUPERINTENDENT OF  STATE  POLICE,  THAT  IDENTIFIES  AND
CONFIRMS THAT SUCH CHECK WAS PERFORMED.
 3.  ALL DEALERS SHALL MAINTAIN A RECORD OF SUCH TRANSACTIONS CONDUCTED
PURSUANT TO THIS SECTION AND SUCH RECORD  SHALL  BE  MAINTAINED  ON  THE
PREMISES MENTIONED AND DESCRIBED IN THE LICENSE AND SHALL BE OPEN AT ALL
REASONABLE HOURS FOR INSPECTION BY ANY PEACE OFFICER, ACTING PURSUANT TO
HIS OR HER SPECIAL DUTIES, OR POLICE OFFICER.
 4.  A  DEALER MAY REQUIRE THAT ANY SALE OR TRANSFER CONDUCTED PURSUANT
TO THIS SECTION BE SUBJECT TO A FEE OF NOT TO  EXCEED  TEN  DOLLARS  PER
 TRANSACTION.
 5.  ANY  RECORD PRODUCED PURSUANT TO THIS SECTION AND ANY TRANSMISSION
THEREOF TO ANY GOVERNMENT AGENCY SHALL NOT BE CONSIDERED A PUBLIC RECORD
FOR PURPOSES OF ARTICLE SIX OF THE PUBLIC OFFICERS LAW.

At least it sounds like it wont cost more than $10 from an FFL. Though I don't get the whole superintendent of state police bit. Sounds like we have to do the check, sign some papers, then send them off to get approved before we can make a sale... what a load of crap. Sounds quicker just to adopt someone then sell them the gun...

The approval of each individual sale and the need to have a ccw renewed each 5 years by the superintendent is extremely concerning. That right there is where the restrictions will come. All of a sudden they will say "we don't approve the sale of any semi auto" or "we are not reissuing pistol permits"

Fawk. This. Bullshit.

And guess who’s budget all of this comes out of, the State Police.

Implementing a state-wide permit process
Registering all existing and new guns
Reregistering permits every 5 years
Universal background check for gun purchase
Universal background check for ammo purchase
