Title: XJ
Post by: rejeep on October 31, 2012, 01:34:57 PM
Smike..
might need some help here...

finally got the XJ into the shop to do a preliminary DMV check for my salvage inspection Monday..
ends up the rear spring hangers are soft as hell...

there are some other issues being addressed by Scotty’s right now, but I wanted to know if I got you the jeep tomorrow or Friday would you be able to mend the soft steel...

pictures attached..  seems its accessible from under the rear seat...
Also have a winch bumper and winch... figured since it will be down there and all ;)

I can postpone the inspection.. but if it can be done...

Driver side.....

Post by: M4wdFab on November 08, 2012, 08:06:10 AM
pulled this kid into the shop last night late, very nice interior and pretty clean on the outside.

Cool jeep.
Title: Re: XJ
Post by: rejeep on November 08, 2012, 09:49:37 AM
it was deff done right...
the guy I got it from is a fanatic about clean interior...
I ever like the way he cut the carpets... kinda the lazy way to fix the typical XJ leaks..
Title: Re: XJ
Post by: M4wdFab on November 08, 2012, 09:55:11 AM

Post by: rejeep on November 08, 2012, 02:17:40 PM
is it really that much higher?

break out the tape...

from what I am told its the RE4.5" spring kit on the jeep
Title: Re: XJ
Post by: M4wdFab on November 08, 2012, 03:14:11 PM
mine has a 3" kit, and a massive ARB bumper, not to mention pretty bald 33"s     ;D
Title: Re: XJ
Post by: M4wdFab on November 08, 2012, 09:38:21 PM
I should have left this guy alone.  nothing around the rot is structural to the leave mounts and those are solid as are the unibody rails.

i punched out the passenger side and welded in a first piece, it will need about two more, and some seam sealer.

the other side isnt too bad.

nice jeep, i like how he cut the carpet out
Title: Re: XJ
Post by: rejeep on November 08, 2012, 10:06:18 PM
I might drop the winch over @ south tomorrow with the Seam Sealer... whatever we have in stock...

glad to hear the rot wasn't so bad... but since it has to go through a real inspection id rather be safe than sorry...
I really want to get my wife out on a trail and this jeep will be more than adequate....

plus it will give me something fun to drive this winter...
Title: Re: XJ
Post by: M4wdFab on November 09, 2012, 10:17:26 PM
bumper mounted,
looks like truck was hit in front passenger side.  bent that back out, welded in a couple nuts, not sure how the bumper was intended to be mounted.  looks good

Steering stabilizer and motor mounts done.

Motor mounts were a pain in the ass, who comes up with this shit.  Have to remove the oil filter and oilfilter housing from the block to get the motor mount bolt out.  Both were exploded and completely separated, so good find for fix.

no progress attempted on rot floors  :)
Title: Re: XJ
Post by: M4wdFab on November 12, 2012, 09:48:42 AM
this guy is done, other than leaky orings

did you see my txt arie? can you get those?
Title: Re: XJ

i dont think so... what O-rings?
Title: Re: XJ
Post by: M4wdFab on November 12, 2012, 11:07:43 AM
saturday, 4:26 you should have a txt from me.

anyhow, i need the 3 orings in the oil filter housing.  It was required to removed this housing to get the motor mount bolt out on the passenger side.  i have taken it apart and cleaned it 3 times (a real pain) and it wont seal back up.  has a slow drip at idle.
Title: Re: XJ

Title: Re: XJ
Post by: M4wdFab on November 12, 2012, 07:12:06 PM
its driveable, and probably fine, but it just has a little seap about a half drip every 10 seconds.

It is locked and out side, FYI.

probably a 30 min fix on the lift.  annoying as hell, but i have it down.
Title: Re: XJ

Title: Re: XJ
Post by: M4wdFab on November 12, 2012, 07:31:43 PM
I welded a broken exhaust hanger back on also.

Sweet thanks..

I figured it might be easy or hard..

I think I'm going to like rocking this rig..

Just need to balance and allign this guy..
Title: Re: XJ
Post by: M4wdFab on November 12, 2012, 07:37:45 PM
not sure how the front mounts are intended to bolt up, i welded in a couple nuts into the unibody rail, and used some of the existing hardware / new grade 8 stuff.

Looked like the truck was hit in the front passenger, once i realized that and banged it back into shape everything lined up a lot better.
Title: Re: XJ
Post by: rejeep on November 12, 2012, 08:15:41 PM

o, and just to be clear the burn mark on the passenger side trim was already there right?  i didnt even see it till i was 100% done and moved to the other side of the truck!  after a moment of panic, i realized it was done by who ever welded in the sliders because it was no where near what i was doing, but close enough to make me think twice!   i bet we could find that at the JY

if the paint doesnt stick well to M4 seam sealer, i can fix that later if we can find the right stuff with 5 minutes and a wire wheel.  Everything i did was pretty cosmetic work, and the mounts were solid where they needed to be.

Title: Re: XJ
Post by: rejeep on December 17, 2012, 01:53:08 PM
steering box might need adjustment...
its deff floaty...
it can also be the heim track bar mount....  lets see how much I drive this thing before I invest in something different..

Post by: mr.mindless on December 17, 2012, 01:53:38 PM
Smike's ram pull ended up being wasted control arm bushings. At rest it measured true but under load the from axle went out of alignment. May be worth a look if you feel like chasing it.
Title: Re: XJ
Post by: rejeep on December 17, 2012, 02:03:58 PM
for a generally clean truck is a rusty crusty front suspention...
might be a spring time project if:
A. I actually drive the thing
B. Its not for sale by then
C. I dont get use to the problem
D. nothing more important comes up

Everything I have seen has the alu fairlead mount to the winch frame...
I don’t know... very odd..
there is a bracket that came with the bumper, it’s for the license plate…  it shouldn’t matter for that model winch..
