case is apart in this thing, Mike you avail tomorrow to stop by and take a look at the bits in this 231? only thing i can find that looks terrible is the surface the shift rod seats to in the rear case housing, its got some egged slop in it. there is also some wear on the low range teeth, and a little play in the shift for pads to slider...
over all, nothing obviously blown.....

If you wanna fly me back up from Huntsville sure :)
-
Symptoms?
-
pops out of 4 low under load / reverse
seems to go in and out of 4 hi no issues.
i am going to try and get the shift pads local from a stealership today, and see if i have another rear case half in the junk pile since the shift rod surface in the rear case is all chewed up and loose
-
fork pads at the dealer tomorrow morning.
-
just figured out the problem with the case. he cracked the rear housing at jareds last year and replaced it with a crown unit from 4wdparts. first step in dirrections:
Customer must remove the shift rail bushing from old case and insert into this case half or purchase a new bushing, part #4338945. Customer may have to remove the case dowels (there are 2 of them) from the old case and insert them into the new case or purchase part #4116310.
there is no shift rail bushing present! thats where it is chewed up!
-
Bingo!
-
actually i think the case half he bought was for a year of 231 they had bearings in them, the newer ones they must have eliminated that. the case half i have from the wonder doesnt have a bushing, but the material is there.

buttoned up and good to go, the Dog gear was in backwards!
