Title: Makita LC1230 dry cut metal saw
Post by: M4wdFab on July 31, 2020, 09:28:34 AM
bought a metal cutting chop saw on auction- just ordered a blade for it.  46$ on amazon for a 12" carbide blade rated for some pretty good metal.  should be interesting what results it makes.  its a 450$ makita saw they still sell at home depot that has good reviews.  lots of bad reviews of blades from people using them on 3500rpm abrasive saws vs 14-1700RPM cold saws.

I have this and I'm not super impressed.  https://www.lowes.com/pd/DEWALT-15-Amp-14-in-Chop-Saw/1207935.  The blade flexes quite a bit if you put any pressure on it which results in an uneven cut and it makes a mess out of the material, needs quite a bit of clean up.  If you don't put pressure on it it literally does nothing.  Was planning to look into different blades but it looks like this is a 4000 RPM unit.

I’ve got experience with a cold saw 15-20 years ago and it was excellent. Mostly on 0.120” square 1 and 1.5”.

Low pressure, keep the heat out of it to make the blade last.

I got a 7.25” mitre saw and threw a metal cutting blade in it with meh results but still better than a chop saw to my taste. I hate chop saws.

Real cold saws are the bees knees for sure.

I bought this for ~$250 at Christmas time. Happy with it so far. Way better than the abrasive unit it replaced.

blade came today.  ill be impressed if it lasts a bit.  seems to cut tube or flat bar nice.  you can tell you really have to be nice to them and consistent light pressure.  seems not a tool for a fab shop or garage with monkeys.

Agreed, not monkey resistant. Monkeys go through blades.

forced myself to use this for an entire project.  its pretty neat.  My trans jack that i got only tilted in one direction and translated uselessly in the other direction.

about 20 cuts and im pretty happy with it.  flat bar 3/8x2" and 1/4" tabs, 1/2" rod, 3/4" square.  thing eats it.

blade still looks and cuts like new so far.

So I did what no man would dare do and I watched a youtube video on how to use a chop saw haha.  Guy said put as much pressure as needed to remove material quickly.  If it's not shooting sparks than you're just glazing the disk.  This method provided much better results.

I listed my DeWalt on FBM and I've received 15 messages in 24 hours.  Didn't think it would be that popular.

well, one blade lasted 13 months in my shop, i think that's impressive especially for my new go to metal saw.  it gets used a ton.  it was starting to drag and quite a few of the carbides were broke off after looking at it.

new blade on today, and cuts like butter again.  supper impressed.

ha, 3rd blade put on today as it was starting to hawg and need alot of down pressure, this one lasted over a year.

its so amazing how this thing cuts through 1.75" x 250 wall DOM tube like balsa wood with no pressure with a new blade.
