Title: Attic climbing gym for etk
Post by: etk300ex on July 06, 2020, 12:04:55 PM
Started on project attic renovation into rock climbing gym.  First task at hand is demo and re-insulating as its not done properly now.  It is a "knee-wall" configuration with ridge vents only.  Currently the rafters are insulated up to the ceiling and blown in on top.  No soffit vents or baffles for air pass-through.  I plan to add soffit vents, baffles and insulate the knee wall and floor to have have a "cold-space" to hopefully fix my ice sickle problem.

Problem #1 is the rafters are 2x6 and the baffles take up about 2".  This leaves me only able to use 4" insulation which is not ideal, but acceptable.  But, 4" insulation is not available in 24" wide anywhere that I've looked.

I would rip some extension pieces to bump it out to 2x8, but I really don't want to add an extensions as I'll be screwing the climbing wall board to the rafters and there is just not enough meat to screw it all to the rafter securly.

I hate working on houses...

Thinking it may be wise to just build an dedicated angled wall fastened floor to ceiling.  That's more work than I wanted to do.

I did baffles and bats on dimensional 2x4 to good effect. Was 16”OC tho

It does, that's kinda what I was thinking as alternative.

You used regular 3.5" batt and baffles in a 4" cavity?

I found some 3.5"D x 24"W batt on HD website but it appears you can only buy in a pallet.

Let me see what I can see in my construction pictures to jog my memory.

I know I did the baffles down at the eve during redecking in prep for blown fiberglass, and I did several things to breathe from that roof to the peak which it hadn’t done before my work (which is why it all needed new decking)

I know i added 2” foamboard in that area as well but let me confirm I did the baffles and batting there too

I'm asking because my understanding is you should take the depth of the baffle out of the insulation thickness as your not suppose to smoosh it.

I can get it delivered from Lowe's 4 bag minimum at $93 a piece :o

That’s correct. Smooshing will reduce r value.

Breathing is more important than insulating for longevity and it seems like you’re staying there a minute. So I’d fix the breathing, given the choice.

The baffles will smoosh some too, if pressed, which is its own challenge.

Added the only applicable pics from oct’16 to my second roofing thread just now. Fun reread.

Plan to cut some 16” in half and hold it all up with vapor barrier. Fuck that price.

Agreed on ventilation over insulation, there were a few spots of black mold on the underside of the roof.  Sealed it with mold primer.

Oh man Idk.  I might bite the $200 bullet on this one, I'm very sensitive to fiberglass.

I’d spend half a day for beer if you want. Especially in the next week and a half when I’m still laid off. I’m pretty tolerant of irritants.

Although... I need to get this rodent situation handled. Someone had one in her office this morning and is more than a little rattled. All was fine when the cat was catching them in the basement. Now not so much fine even a little bit.

They’re going places they haven’t been since their habitat is destroyed. I’m babysitting one under the dishwasher right now, quite sure it’s the one that was up in her office this morning. She saw it make the living room, I saw it make the fridge and it went under the dishwasher when I moved the fridge.

72 cheap Sticky traps and a dozen snap traps arrive Thursday.

In the meantime, you can make a mouse trap bucket.   5 gal bucket.  Wire hanger in middle of bucket with a can lathered with peanut butter. and ramps to the can.   Fill bucket halfway with water and it'll drown.

None of these would go for that. Way too skittish especially with the animals around. I’ve tried traps like that before and they only work with hungry mice or in a very quiet place where they will go cross country in the open.

Rosie got this one for me. It got out of my barrier and under the fridge again. I had her keep watch while I moved the fridge and it was done.

I ordered the 24"x4" insulation from Lowes.  Pickup date change 4 times and now is cancelled ::).

I ordered 24" wide from lowes and HD and both orders were cancelled without explanation.   Went with standard and cut, it wasn't that bad.  Removed a closet, standard size, it had about 80' of 2x4 and painted yellow for some reason haha.  Walls are insulated, baffled and back up.  Going to pull 2 corners back down to add some studs for support.  Making progress.

I have practically no ice-cycles while surrounding houses have 6 footers.  Nice to see all this work has done something!

I have some more knob & tube to deal with and then I can finish insulation.  Will be fairly easy except for one hallway light I'm not sure how I'm going to fish it.  Might have to cut a hole in the attic floor to get to it, but not a big deal.  Should be the last k&t in the house.  This is the third circuit that I've found connected to the same k&t in the second floor ceiling ::)

I fucking hate this project.  Ceiling is finally done after months of procrastination.  It is a giant jigsaw puzzle.  Nothing is straight, level, even, consistent or otherwise.  Each piece had to be cut on all 4 sides into some sort of parallelogram(?) shape.  It's been a while since geometry class.

In positive news, last month my heating was cut by 1/2 and AC cut by 1/3 compared to last year which had practically the same high/low average temp.
