found that i put the stage 8 lock nut on backwards and my wheel was close to falling off.  only noticed the bias mud line in the shop ridding dirty on one side of the lugs.

removed and re assembled tonight.

remembered shocks need machine work and didnt get anything eyed up to much.

i had one of my old school tech guys at work stop over and listen to my motor.  he says bottom end is good, but i have a blown wrist pin and the piston is slapping a valve.  only cause where its in a certain rpm band.  rienforcements are coming tomorrow for a second ear.

bottom line he said run it for the next RCROCS race, but he wouldnt run it for an 800$ race....

Post by: mr.mindless on May 02, 2012, 03:54:07 PM
told you they were gonna say pull the pan :)

what's up at M4 tonight? I have a wedge to drop off, a full set of fuel lines to install, and rear driveshaft ujoints to change out. All of which I can do there or home.... but I have a handy spare tire in the bed to test fit on the rear of your truck.

Probably free after 7:30 or so.
Title: Re: 571 RCQ prep
Post by: M4wdFab on May 02, 2012, 05:17:34 PM
zero point in pulling the pan in car.

if i can get a motor lined up ill swap it this weekend.

motor is puzzling guru guy number two.  he has an 9 sec nova, with plates    :o

he his thinking piston skirt, main bearing, or cracked flex plate.

is so confused how dam well the motor runs and sounds.
Title: Re: 571 RCQ prep

i think he talked me into pulling the pan, but really i see no point.  bah.

Title: Re: 571 RCQ prep
Post by: M4wdFab on May 04, 2012, 08:08:03 AM
wasnt too bad with the lift and new shop.

sweating concrete is annoyingly slippery though!

Title: Re: 571 RCQ prep
Post by: Ryan on May 04, 2012, 08:20:51 AM
Just replace it, why even bother looking at it?
Title: Re: 571 RCQ prep
Post by: mr.mindless on May 04, 2012, 09:38:49 AM
Troy should come grind the concrete and give it some texture!

look at it because it only makes noise so far, it's not really broken.  glad the lift improved the annoyance factor.

I only got ujoints done last night. Hope they were my problem.  Wrapped up just as the light show was starting, I didn't get dripped on.
Title: Re: 571 RCQ prep
Post by: Ryan on May 04, 2012, 09:49:27 AM
Best case is you replace main bearings and they last another race, then pull it again.

Worse case you pull it apart and discover scored cylinder walls from a broken piston, machine work and parts =$$$

Why not just replace it with one of the options and be done for another year? Why waste time diagnosing a problem just to replace it anyway? Time = money at M4 now.  8)

Title: 571 RCQ prep
Post by: mr.mindless on May 04, 2012, 08:43:08 PM
Not bad to see at all, and it never went to zero. I was watching it since as the motor got hotter the pressure would drop. Always at least 15-20 psi. P

found a 5.3 vortec with a harness local i think im going to give a try.  from a crashed 01

looks like all i need to bolt up my trans is this:

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/HUP-HP3795/

In 2001, GM - for the first time since 1955 - changed the crank depth and its pilot bore diameter of the Gen. III. Pilot bushings differ for these motors and transmissions built from this time forward had a deeper bellhousing and different torque converter.

Wiring it is not hard, I can have her running in an evening. You need the computer flashed before you get it going, or its gonna run in limp mode or something. Lots of things can be turned off and should be turned off. Trans controls, rear O2 sensors, Torque management, and other annoyances should be done away with.

looks like summit and jegs have a new policy they instant transfer from the visa attached to the paypal acount instead of the bank account attached, paypal had some 3 year old bad visa number and it was rejected.  wont let me "update" the card with a pending transfer so now i have to cancel both orders and re order.  what a fucking mess once again.

PayPal sucks. Don't let them hold your money, they're not a bank. If anyone gives them a complaint, they can lock that shit down and you have no recourse...

Take your payments and grander funds back to your bank and make your purchase payments with visa or MC like some respectable folk.

Title: Re: 571 RCQ prep

different brands of joints have different cap thicknesses/needle lengths & diameters/ cross diameters.

spec only dictates OD and lockup dimension, all the internal stuff can and will vary between brands and suppliers. I've had caps that will not fit on "the same" joint

Busy day at work so I'm not getting much 101 shit done, but booklet updates are all that's left and that should be sneakable somewhere. I'm picking up fliers today and will have them at the prerun.

exhaust, coolant hoses, finish motor mounts, fit hood, extend fuel lines, plumb gages, make MAF and filter fit, chase vac holes and plug shit and remove motor junk, pull shock to rebuild, rear sway bar, rear bushings rebuild, Fluids race prep, mod hood

ECM is being expressed over today, so maybe tomorrow or monday.

few hours of prep tonight after festive mother gatherings
she cranks when i hit the button, all harness that i need is plugged in and 95% tidyd up.  trans, steering, engine, coolant filled and ready for fire.  MAF and filter setup done.

remote fuel fill parts bought, but i was wrong on guessing pipe size, its a wire like 2 1/4" pipe size?

ryan you want to give me a hand tomorrow?  i think i am close as i can be and ill print shit out tomorrow more for my year.  im not sure your harness is the same as mine because it is a blue and red harness.

couple wires to hack into, and slap in a new fuel pump relay she will be good to go.

she has good oil pressure, no noises and purrs like a chetaaa

after a few starts the iac started behaving plugged in, must have been a learning thing its good to go now.

awesome power.  truck fully wired and cleaned up and test driven.  may need to pick the ass up with the janitor fully bleed the cooling system, but i think i realized this motor has a 195 stat and not a 160 stat so its probably fine.

on to little stuff like hood, sway bar, and race prep.  should be good to go for this weekends race.

front driver upper king pin fucked, note to self to investigate.

Other hinges done. It is late.

it will need at least one more patch on the inside, no more vluc work needed, unless he will fix the part that still has a small leak right over where he repaired the sidewall, and slime will do the rest i guess.  expensive tire.

No way I'm leaving early tmw unfortunately. Board meetings yesterday and today, big video system issue yesterday, and set up for some commencement stuff tomorrow along with catching up on usual work... Blah blah. Work gets in the way of things I'd rather be doing.

Think I'll just drive myself down. May be grabbing some tires from Trevor in Scranton on my way back up Sunday too depending on what we do.

the brake assembly in 571 is actually out of my 75 CJ5 and uses the OEM brake switch.  i had replaced it with a new one from napa when i built the CJ but it has failed.

sat on the nice cold concrete floor tonight for a few minutes staring at the front of the truck, i think it gets hosed because the dirrection of the bolt is wrong.  lock to lock the ram rotates, so it tries to egg out and fuck the mount,  may flip the truss side mount so the bolt is horrozontal instead of vertical?....

swapped some bushings and flipped some links.  also made a remote fuel fill for the cell

snapped both the rear caliper bleeders off after application of ample PB and torch, no go.  fuck them.  stupid reman calipers i hate them.  not going to change the rear flex line.
