Title: project vegetable garden
Post by: M4wdFab on March 10, 2020, 09:04:02 PM
im thinking i might give a go at growing some stuff this year.  as a kid i did strawberries, tomatoes, onions, potatoes, peppers and a few others.

i am completely ignorant on this and need to do some research.   looking for large quantity from seeds i guess.  i have a 3 acre field full sun, water source from house or from greenway creek.  lots of deer, and of course need to maintain the race course :)

You're late!

I've been using these lights for seeds and on the aquaponics.  They work well, best bang for the buck I could find.  4' version is abetter deal if you have the space, which I'm sure you do. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07ZD2CB6V/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Yeah, it’s sproutling time not seed time.

Gotta start somewhere if you’re gonna start though. Learning year.

yes i did not know this.  going to half ass some stuff this year so when deer eat 3/4s of it i wont be too disappointed.

If you’re thinking out in the field I think you’ll need some good fencing. The deer eat my plants, and they’re not even good food plants.

im thinking a little smaller this year.  but maybe make something the buggy could drag around if i wanted to go bigger haha.

bought some seeding stuff today and about 12 packs of seeds.... no idea how much that really is

what could possibly go wrong.

Me and Marie had a pretty successful first year with a big garden last year. It is actually really easy but the biggest thing is the bugs and animals which are a pain to keep away. If you can fence it in that helps a lot.

All I can picture is smike driving the buggy around with a set of draggs attached to it, while in muck boots, denim overalls, no shirt, and a straw hat.

Perhaps flag down the farmer on tractor in the field along the Erie station to do your field for a small fee?

hmm tried my version.  not so good.  either needs a big weight box then i wont be able to lift it with the winch line over the roof to the rear, or i need to get my angle on the teeth so it digs in on its own.

boo!

fixed fuel system issue in the buggy though, cell inspected and collapsed hoses changed.

how do rear steer setups work? can you do the same but use the hyraulic ram to lift/lower your plow?

thought about it, but no tank for volume usage in the system.  and i dont have much for hydro cylinders laying around

will take some thinking.

stuff like this is why i choose a sub compact tractor with a MMM vs a zero turn mower.   A lot more versatility.

ya but mowing with a 5mph tractor every week has got to bring the super suck.

not sure my plan here.  i think the buggy has enough ass to do something, i just need to figure it out.

tomatoes are really taking off.  about 2" tall and leaves.  carrots, cucumbers and peppers not to far behind.

started some window onions today from roots left over from onions i just used for dinner.  watched a few youtube videos and cant wait to get back to store to get green onions to start.  i guess you can grow them all year long and just keep clipping the tops!  crazy i wish i know that before i buy 2-3 bunches every time im at the store.

Just leave an onion be, it'll sprout and you get get chives out of your veggie bowl on the counter for a couple weeks if you want!

Looks awesome!! Just saw you were doing this, really excited for you. I love gardening if you need any tips. Bush beans and sugar snap peas are always my favorites to plant since they are fast growing and you can usually plant two rounds, early spring and late summer for into fall.

decided they were going to need too much work.  put them up on market place.  just loaded them both onto a trailer for a guy, and made 100$ more than i paid on them.  also got rid of two junk 8 lug tire/wheels to him.  win.

have been trying to get window onions going for a few weeks now.

just bush hawged around the field and started smelling onions.  stopped, and realized about every 5 feet my entire field has green oinions growing and they are about 2' tall.  crazy.  grabbed a hand full and brough in.  they are better than the store ones you pay a 2$ a bunch!

win!

next will be finish the two fence ends, and get the water situation under control.

How’s your back? Or did you make a planter?
Title: Re: project vegetable garden
Post by: M4wdFab on May 24, 2020, 09:23:06 PM
didnt really use my back today.  used the tractor A LOT.  i did wear knee pads though and got some sun burn in some new places im not use to working on the ground lol

transplanted 4 trays of seedlings.

rows of red tomatoes, yellow tomatoes, banna peppers, carrots, two kinds of cucumbers, onions, and 4 big pumpkins that are growing super fast.

the un fenced portion i think is just going to be all sweet corn and maybe something else easy.

next up is getting water out there.

500' roll of 1/2" pex is 94$ on amazon.  that would be cheapest and tempermant solution.

real solution would involve 300' of ditching, running power, water, cable, gas to garage and then barn. then hose bib off back of barn.  not sure im going to sign myself up for that yet.

300gal IBC tote on the tractor forks is not going to work out.  too heavy at 1/3 full and super sketchy to lift up 6' in air for watering wand i threw together.

Might be worth the work to get water to the barn, it's so nice to have a sink to wash up in

annoying part about water in barn, no mater what i do, it will be seasonal un less i want to get creative with heat tape.

that's a fact. which may mean overall pitch is important so you can have an easy and effective low point drain

300 gals of water on the buggy roof would be fine right?  asking for a friend.

Only either with seatbelts in use or an unstrapped tote.

Your springs may hate you

Post by: M4wdFab on May 26, 2020, 08:46:39 PM
lol i did put my harness on after about moving 15 feet.  felt like wheeling a narrow track CJ5 on 35s. yes well strapped to car.  i filled it about 3/4 full which was more than enough water for a good soaking on the 25'x50' plot

some how lost a bead on a rear tire, that didnt help my journey.  i need to make a winch powered lifting mech for the head to account for slope on the land, or make the wand a full 30 feet and supported better just watering one dirrection.  IBC valve right over my right shoulder worked great.

You’re not that deep. Pull it in 100’ sections and dig the ends to connect? I feel like it’s going to start stretching with that much resistance. Good call in the wet.
Title: Re: project vegetable garden
Post by: M4wdFab on May 30, 2020, 12:27:03 PM
almost made the full 325, i think it was my fault.  in on section i went way too deep and it got tight.   just broke a few times right at the tractor. only lost about 3' of pipe.

wasnt happy with depth though driveway so did some digging then decided to put the line inside conduit.  its about 5" below grade in 40' of conduit.  meh.

made water down at the garden!

putting up 160' of gutter sounds like a lot of work 25-28' up, not sure anything off the little garage would help.

ripped a 325' long line from house right now down to garden.... i guess when the water bill comes ill evaluate.

Commodity Charge per 1000 gallons: $3.38

based on the time it took to fill 2/3 a 300 gallon tote, id say im using less than 1000 gals of water a week extra.   i can live with that for now.

ran two 100' rows of pex for watering.  not great results.  think i need about 5 times the water flow or i should have used smaller than 1/16" for my holes.

cleaning up the barn a little today, got into that crate of save o lot auction buy.  found two mechanical sprinkers that test good!  they might just do the trick for a little while.

havent been giving many updates but still working on this.  the weeds are crazy,  i kinda gave up on about 2/3s of the garden.  weeded around the strong and moving with those.  deer at 95% of my corn plants outside of the fense.  i guess that was a lesson and that my fence works lol

have been picking sweet pees for a couple weeks (had no idea i planted them- i thought they were pickle cucumbers)
picked a few sample size of carrots and they are stubby 3" right now.  just picked the first full grown cucumber, a zukinni and a yellow pepper i missed tonight!  zukkini plants are about 3' around and tall.  i guess those do well.

pumkin plants are 6-8' long and a few baseball size fruits are starting.

have probably about 100 tomatoes that are going about golf ball size and green right now.

my seed-started pepper plants aren't doing anything interesting.

for next year here,
compost is building.
nothing is yet firmly planned. likely go raised beds due to soil and drainage. I'd like to do it on a higher area without ponding, so it could all get tilled in along with some horse exhaust and maybe make the ground habitable to things that like good soil instead of being stuck on raised beds forever. or maybe that's not so bad? I don't know, they just seem annoying since I can't drive a tractor through them.
