Im in no hurry, so this will be a slow build to keep me busy this winter.

Dents pounded out of hood, grill and front fender.

Starting a full custom chassis/suspension parts list.

Oh come on!

(we're totally spoiled by sMike's speed of doing truck jobs)

60" wide rear axle acquired.  10 Bolt w/3.08 gears from a 1967 Camaro.  $60

Was part of a back half frame chop.

Removed all the old mounts and drum brake hardware.  Ready for final grinding and clean up.

could be perspective or what wheel offset does to geometry but I was thinking it lacks clearance for front steering angle?

you do realize the wheels are just sitting there.?.   This is a Concept Pic used for visual aesthetics.

I'm a ways off from suspension design...

v belts and low riders really dont tickle me.  i like a good farm truck stance ready for work.  nice looking shell.  crocked wipers would drive me nuts.

I dig it.

The old truck I picked up sits pretty low as well, and I haven't had any issues so far with it.. (other than the wife hitting her door on the curb......twice.......)

im on the other end of the spectrum.  I like the hammered stance.       I dont care for the flat bed look.

Thanks.. It could use a little less gear. probably address that over the winter they make a 3.23 gear set now for the old banjo rear axle which should get me to 65 ish MPH which should be plenty.

I've got over 700 miles on it since August when I brought it home.

the factory cab mounts on the original frame were in great shape, so i ground off the rivet heads and air hammered them out.

got them positioned and tacked into place on the new frame

next made up some rubber pucks and got the cab in place.

the front suspension will be a Mustang II IFS type with Airbags.   this should give the truck good car like handling and the Airbags will allow for adjustable ride height.

LOTS of math and measurement to get to this point.   check and recheck and and then check again.

Brakes.

needed to run longer studs to accommodate the newer wheels.  drilled for 7/16-20 Serrated Wheel Stud - .487 In. Knurl, 2-1/8 In. Length

i went for a .015 press fit

got the brake hardware installed and then worked on getting the power rack and pinion installed.

because of the ultra low "parked" stance i needed to notch the frame rails where the steering rods pass under.

Next started in on the bed.

over all the bed is in great shape, not one spot of rot!

pulled out the factory wood floor bed to start mock up of the rear axle placement, 4 link, air bags, shocks and frame mods.

this area will also need to accommodate fuel tank (factory unit was behind seat) air tank, air compressor(s), air management system and exhaust.

Front air bags installed.

I didn't like the placement of the air bag with the provided brackets, so I made my own.

Had to cut out the upper hats to make room for the brackets i made.

This keeps the bags away from anything that might rub.

Air bags have internal bump stops, but i think i might add some external hard stop bump stops just for an extra added safety factor.

At full deflation everything still sits 1" off the ground.

Spent some time sifting through the Monroe shock catalog to find shocks that meet my requirements. In order of relevance, mounting style/stroke/size/cost.  Shocks ordered.

Pics are at normal ride height.

Rolling chassis status.

Rear 4 link and air bags in  :o

calculating and getting the numbers right on this one was a nightmare.   needed to be extra picky to make sure the pinion stays within 3 degs throughout the suspension travel and that the forward/aft movement of the axle is in the half travel range as well.

Front shocks in.   Rear shocks sized and ordered.

Time for engine/tranny.

Pulled the 4l80E off the 2000 lq4(iron heads)  and put it on the 2002 lq4 (aluminum heads)

I have ECMs for both.

https://ls1tech.com/forums/automatic-transmission/1777893-all-about-flexplates-converters-transmissions-spacers.html

So how much crap can I delete/strip off the engine?

Any good links I should read?

Not much. Just the evap solenoid if I remember correctly. EGR if there is one.

www.lt1swap.com has everything.

leave everything on the motor.  delete EGR yes.  if you need a stock manifold that doesnt have EGR im sure i have a few.

leave entire engine and PCM harness / trans harness.  Rear o2s are not used.

the important connector is the black C2 connector.  pinks to ignition on, 2 reds or 2 oranges to keep alive power, big purple will kick the starter.  that simple.

progress has slowed on this project.

I tore my knee up this fall.

Started with a Downhill MTB crash and then trying to ski on it at first snow this ski season.

MCL and Meniscus tear on my right knee.  Surgery required.   fuck.

You dont even realize how much time you spend on a knee or crouching and standing when working in the shop.

Working on the tranny tunnel now.  Needed to bring the tranny up into the cab area and clear tunnel space for the rear driveshaft when the truck is aired out and in the parked position.

slow going, but feels weird if im not in the shop this time of year...

I think my my pain tolerance is just way more from normal back issues.

As my knee starts to feel better I have gotten back into the shop.
Started working on raising the bed floor to clear notch and tanks.

Found a set of stainless block hugger exhaust manifolds that only took a little bit of mods to clear the pass side motor mount.

Also built a custom brake pedal set up with a 8" dual diaphram booster and 1- 1/8" master.

Got a bench seat mounted.   Fits perfect.

Steering linkage is also done.

Air tank and dual compressors in too.

looks like you have a ton of room.  i use the black sewer rubber elbows that depot/lowes carries, 9$ with two clamps between TB and MAF, then another 90 or coupling to air filter (vans have round filters)

ls is 1.5 on bottom and 1.25 on top.    Dayco flex hoses from summit (9-15$ each) are now cloth wrapped and look super awesome in an old truck install.

john in shortsville can burn any PCM for free to him now if you dont care about the VIN in the PCM.  i bring him a 12pack and he did 4 for me last time.

also FYI if you dont like that oil fill cap extension, the cap also directly works on the valve cover once the extension is removed.

you have to use a special tool to flare your fuel lines or just a standard double flare tool?

I last touched this thing in June.  left off with the plumbing mocked up.

Waiting for after the holidays to dig back into this.

Next steps are the E brake and column shift.

Followed by engine/PCM and electrical.

I plan to have it on the road this summer...

I got a chance to get some work in on this.
E brake setup done.   Column shifter fab done.
Started weeding out the PCM harness.   Got all connections labeled.  All non needed wires depinned and pulled. Started to draw up a schematic.
Bed wiring harness fabbed up.

Forgive me if I am out of line asking this as I'm not an engineer.  Do you have any concerns if the red circled part will get bent upward if you hit a bad bump or via fatigue over time?
Title: Re: 1958 Chevy Apache
Post by: gif on January 21, 2020, 05:58:40 PM
The material in question is 1.5" wide X 3.125" long X .25" thick.
It is welded to a 1.25" od X .188 wall vertical post.  The shock mounting stud hole is 1" from the vertical post.   A shock is non load bearing and should never reach the internal bump stops.

Think of it this way.    Put a piece of the same size in a vice with 1.25" exposed,   then try to bend it hitting it with a rubber mallet.

Its alive!  :)

PCM installed.  Air intake installed.

I wanted to hear it run, so i jumped the gun and added coolant and fired the engine.

Started up so fast it scared me.  Engine sounds tight.   Runs clean.

Have a real bad fuel leak on the drivers fuel rail somewhere i need to address.   Couldnt get the the coolant to circulate.  Must have trapped air somewhere.

Sucks to have the shop doors open whens its -1 out...

fuel rail- if you need any of those orings let me know

coolant-  there is a steam port on the driver side head that probably went through the TB and then to the rad.  put a bolt in a short section of hose so you can bleed the head here.  usually you just have to do this at start up with new coolant.  some guys plumb this to the suction side of the water pump housing.
Title: Re: 1958 Chevy Apache
Post by: gif on February 15, 2020, 05:57:11 PM
fuel rail leaks chased down.
Coolant loop was fighting me.   Ended up drilling out the weep hole in the thermostat to .25".  This allows the coolant pump to move enough coolant to purge the air in the high spots without waiting for the thermostat to open

Air suspension tank installed and plumbing started.
Air management system still undecided.  more research required, but i do have one bookmarked for purchase...

Also started configuring an old android tablet to be used as an instrument display. (factory cluster is non functional)
This will include rooting the tablet to gain access to the files that need to be changed so the the tablet will auto boot when the charger cable is powered (key on).  Then a taskmanager can run a macro app to start a OBDII display app.  And when the charger cable is powered off (key off) the macro app will stop the display app and power off the tablet.
The end result will be a display that turns on and off with the truck.

The displays (air ride controller / Samsung tablet running Torque app as my dash display) are mounted with earth magnets to a steel backer that is mounted with a friction hinge so i can flip it up out of view.
Or flip it down at any viewing angle.

Also have a complete stealth stereo system including forward facing Pioneer 6X9's under the seat, shallow Pioneer 12" sub, old school 2003 Kicker KX550.3  3 channel amp.  Using my cell phone as the music source with a stealth remote volume knob and remote sub level control knob on the dash so i dont have to fuss with the phone while im driving.

Paper work resubmitted.

The DMV clerk sent a note back with exactly what I had to do to get around the "Altered proof of ownership"

Success.  Plates came today.

Note: Acceptance of this form as proof of ownership is at the discretion of the DMV. If it is acceptable for registration purposes, you will be allowed to register the vehicle, boat, snowmobile or ATV, and DMV will issue a non-transferable registration document to you. Title Bureau staff will make the final determination as to whether or not proof of ownership will be accepted, and whether or not DMV will issue a transferable registration to you.

Now just need more nice weather for a proper shake down run.

Inspected.   100% road legal.

Couple of things to button up.

1) bump the power steering pressure up.  Steering feels under powered when not rolling.

Mustang II power steering racks want to run at 1000 PSI or the steering gets twitchy.  However i think because of the heavier truck body i need to
bump it up.  Stock GM pumps are rated to 1350 PSI.   I have a pressure reducer kit installed, set at 1000 PSI

2) change out valve seal to new "hat" style.  Slight smoke out the exhaust after a long idle.  Dont ever see it,   but you can smell it.

3) fix some of the rattles in the doors.  Mostly the windows in the window frame missing the felt liner.

for felt liner, i literally use felt from the fabric store, rough cut an inch wide strip as long as you need.  run a bead of RTV in the channel and use a flat screw driver to glue it in.  after its dry, take a wire wheel and trim the excess flush.   looks factory mint for pennys.

i use felt as well.     i did the bottom tracks before i put the doors back together after getting the windows cranks and door handles to move.     I use 3m super 77 spray glue       been using this stuff forever

Power steering pressure bumped to 1350 PSI.    No issues.

Found an exhaust collector bolt laying on the shop floor.  :o   All the collector bolts were loose.
Collectors came with 3/8 bolts with flange style nuts. The one place i did not use a top lock style nut....
Replaced with grade 8 bolts, lock washers and top lock nuts.
I use copper collector gaskets so they were fine.

Also noticed a lifter tick that randomly comes and goes.
Running conventional oil in the engine now as I was unsure of the condition and didnt want to waste money on good oil if the engine was junk.
Going to run some Sea Foam and then change out the oil for some Royal Purple Full Synthetic HPS.

I will also change out the valve seals at that time.

Everything thing else is 100%

Its LOUD and low and ride/drives great!    love it.

hows ride quality & handling?
Title: Re: 1958 Chevy Apache

seating position, cabin space, visibility.  all great.

road manners are on par with a car.   minimal body roll, smooth over road joints

4 link is spot on.  IFS is just about perfect at 100PSI and has no dive with hard braking.

Not going to change a thing!

wife says it's too loud ! ::)

On one of the warmer days we went for a longer cruise. With the windows down, load on the engine and between 35-50 MPH the exhaust is real raspy and drones a lot. (to be honest it does sound like a race car)  I never really noticed it at first until we were in some traffic and had to follow the speed of traffic up a hill.

so i started looking for a way to tone down the exhaust. the best option i found was to build spiral or auger style inserts that go into the existing exhaust tube.
these are easy to make and can be tuned to your liking. I made a 6 flute 2.5" version.  (I can always cut them down if i want more sound)
Best part they are removable with a couple of capture screws.

Wow, what a difference they make.   I went for a drive through south bristol hills to put a load on the engine.  Very melllow now, but still has the V8 sound.
Should make longer drives a lot more tolerable.

Do they rattle inside the pipe?

Great solution though!

I decided i missed the rumble of the aggressive exhaust.

I installed a pair of electric cutouts that bypass the second auger mufflers i just installed.

This gives the the best of both worlds with the flip of a switch.

I have been rolling out to a bunch of pop up cruise nights and car shows.  Apache gets a lot of attention.   I have not seen one other vehicle on air ride, so i guess the amount of questions I get is to be expected.   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d8hddO7g8lU

The auger thing you made goes after the muffler?  im going to try and do something on the two trucks i have- they both have the same problem.  fappy rattle under load thats really annoying.  sound great at idle / idle rev.

biggest problem ill have, is not much of the exhaust is straight pipe, so i might just cut into the pipe and slip in baffles
