Ease of getting them is worth something. No off-roading required for pick up.

Shame the glass isn’t better but I think that’s asking a lot of 70 year old trucks.

day two pretty close to her home.  chassis and cab trimmed, dropped down to pretty close to where it needs to be.  some center cab mount tin work and some bolts should be mounted tomorrow.

big summit order placed, radiator and fan on its way from ebay.

investigated glass costs, need to pull the PCM to send out.  could be firable next week/weekend

I'd say keep it SRW but make bed barely wide enough to cover DRW.   When you sell it, you can offer an upgrade to DRW for $1.5k (random number I thought of) extra.

There’s different models to choose from toward bottom in this link. Chrome and black enamel to choose from if you click on the model

took a good scrubbing but its very nice.  fits right in with the truck and interior "colors"

mounts welded in tonight.  it slides and back folds down for storage behind.  lost my under seat fold up storage.  they only had cloth montana mini van seats this time at J&J.  probably should have grabbed it anyway, maybe ill get it next weekend for the international.  not sure i like the other seat i got.  looks way new and its a little narrow actually.

come on PCM!  almost time to push things around and get haggerty pics and plates for both of the rigs!

Mike,

What did you do for the coolant sender.

I bought jegs gauges.. Which don't fit the coolant port on the head, so I bought the ls sender from auto meter that fits, however it's a different resistance than the jegs sender. Only reason I bought he jegs package was due to the programmable  speedo, and the the fuel gauge was the correct ohms for my fuel cell sender.

So I'm just about to drill the port in the head to 1/4" npt and call it a day. I'm just curious what you did.
Title: Re: 1949 chevy 4100: shop rod 2.0
Post by: mr.mindless on May 16, 2018, 10:10:58 AM
I think that's what was done for the old mechanical gauge's sender on my last motor. my Acutech SMI gauge came with a proper threaded sender for the LS head, so I didn't go through this recently. I wouldn't feel bad about tapping out a hole though.
Title: Re: 1949 chevy 4100: shop rod 2.0
Post by: M4wdFab on May 16, 2018, 10:42:11 AM
i have done it a few different ways

Matts car we sourced the correct metric thread adapter that his sender fit in (paper thin bushing)

most of our cars, a 1/4" npt tap has been run into the very close metric tap on the passenger head where the plug is. (oem sensor on driver side head).  no problems on 4-5 motors.

on the hot rods i am a little lazy and i pull the heater core nipples out of the water pump.  holes left are perfect size to run a 3/8" npt and 1/2" npt tap.  on the race cars they get brass plugs, on hot rods i put the sensor in the front one, done.  not best place but lets you know abnormal temp if occurs.
Title: Re: 1949 chevy 4100: shop rod 2.0
Post by: M4wdFab on May 16, 2018, 10:44:47 AM
if your worried about thread chips beyond a bunch of greese on the tap, put some compressed air on the steam port nipple (coolant drained) to force chips out with positive pressure.  same way i tap the stupid vents on TH400s, air pressure on pump vent to force chips away from pump
Title: Re: 1949 chevy 4100: shop rod 2.0
Post by: wnyjpgy on May 16, 2018, 10:47:34 AM
Thanks for the info.

I planned on taking my 1/4" npt tap to the hurt old head I have so see how it went.

I assume you didn't even bother drilling it since it's very close?

I have the adapter with the correct thread from autometer like Matt used, but it has a smaller diameter sensor that fits in it. It also came with instructions not to drill out for the other sensor since it get too thin.. Sounds like you guys made it work though.

Unfortunately my heater hoses are hooked up, so that's not an option.

I'll probably just run my tap in the passenger side port..

Post by: wnyjpgy on May 16, 2018, 10:49:46 AM
I'm not too concerned about the chips, I've tapped steering boxes assembled without issue doing in carefully, I would probably do the same thing here.

My gauge works, just the range is off.. It's on my remaining short list to address.
Title: Re: 1949 chevy 4100: shop rod 2.0
Post by: M4wdFab on May 16, 2018, 11:05:00 AM
no drilling for 1/4"

unless you really fuck up and then drill it out for 3/8" NPT

now that i think about it, that was done on one of matts motors, but i think his fancy gages had a smaller sender that fit in the supplied adapter.
Title: Re: 1949 chevy 4100: shop rod 2.0
Post by: M4wdFab on May 16, 2018, 11:08:41 AM
some other good info, for your oil pressure- if you get an oil cooler delete plate (OEM for any 1/2 ton above the oil filter) the cast hole is correct size for 1/8" NPT tap.  you just have to take a 3/16" drill bit and though to the pressure side before running a 1/8npt tap in.

works mint.  good for esender or copper mechanical line

put some miles on this unit tonight.  ETC makes alot of noise.  might try to score a new one from work.  also needs brake work.  very weak brakes and severe grinding at low speed stop.  inspection says start with the rear that looks whooped.

4.8 is def not a 6.0    much less power than last truck but still fine!

boo for 180$ wiper conversion working for one rain day then falling apart.   what a pain in the ass to install and adjust.  barely jams in under the dash too.  not impressed.

hopefully my fix is good.  bah.

ordered a brake light switch.  was stuck on last night causing a dead battery this morning.  might fix for 11$ or might need a new petal assembly since its bushings are beat.  it will get a hydraulic switch instead then for simplicity.

new brake switch fixed  problem.

last thing is to get the fleet van dummy tune out of the motor/trans, other wise solid unit!

PCM should be back today or tomorrow with trans calibration fixed!
Had a good 20 minute conversation with a potential buyer located in MA last night

both adds updated with new current pictures.

2 more trips. week from today and 13-Nov.

would be nice if there were factory recovery points on both sides. would be easy to do if that were the case.
I should plate the TDI to see if I want to trust it for the trip. probably shouldn't. Need to slap a radiator in it. That's the one that should get the tow bar mod. it's salvage already, who cares what happens to it.
