Title: FC 170
Post by: rejeep on April 12, 2017, 04:32:58 PM
This Jeep found me..
Friend of a friends brother stationed out of state..
17 years under closed doors - drove in under its own power in 1999..
Ex PA bush fire truck
SRW, 3 speed  :(
but I guess that means it wouldn't be a crime to change things around..
Should have it home within the month... garage needs to be cleaned out

YES, my first FC...
I was kind of saving/looking for something bigger and more imported... but this kind of fell in my lap..
Really solid truck..  I have the whole history..
ill see if I have any more pictures from when I took a look at it..

Just want to get it running and driving...  However head is spinning with ideas like diesel and DRW ::)

funniest thing about this... for me anyway...
I never wanted a red car.. always thought they were tacky and common...
I now have 4 very not common cars and they are all red.. :o

Post by: rejeep on April 13, 2017, 10:10:45 AM
I agree from what I saw/can see.. its a solid truck...
didn't really get under it.. the tires were deflated to get it into the garage..
real simple goals here..
get it out, get it home, get it running and stopping...

see where it goes from there...
I wasn't looking for a project.. tinkering ok

old jeep rescue kit ordered..

- New carb
- New Fuel pump
- New electronic distributor
- Tune up ignition
- New MC and WC all around

picking up Sat....

I found the 'text' from the for sale ad that never got posted..

For Sale 1958 FC170.
$5000.00 dollars or best offer
Odometer reads 28743.9
Factory drivetrain Hurricane six, 3 speed manual gear box, hi/lo transfer case, and Dana axles front and rear.
Refitted with an alternator
Has extra gauges, switches, relays(wig/wags) and a monstrous set of running boards from its fire truck days.
Original factory service manual.
Drove it into the garage 1999 with fresh oil and a full tank of gas. Has been keeping the structure from blowing away ever since.

Cab has some rust. The worst spots are the cowling and rear cab corners. The pick-up box is rough, part of it was cut away for fire pump plumbing, the rest is in dire need of a good metal worker. Rear fenders are shot.

It was originally set up as a brush truck by a fire department in PA. It was sold at auction to a local who drove it till 1992 and sold it due to a nasty divorce to a mechanic in Cuba, NY. The mechanic sold it to guy in Scottsville, NY. It was used as a beast of a winter commuter for a few years. Then it was sold to me and has been garaged for 17 years in East Rochester, NY. I bought it in April 1999, and stored it in August 1999 when I enlisted in the Navy. I recently inherited a very sentimental project and don’t have the room or finances to support two projects

Fairly uneventful extraction yesterday with the FC...
I might be getting wiser as I age, and decided hiring a wrecker wouldn't be the worst idea instead of struggling with jacks and my trailer for hours..
Ive pulled too many Jeeps from fields and barns to have learned my lesson the hard way..

was a very tight squeeze in an even tighter driveway... but the Jeep drove in, so it was for certain coming out..
dropped off right in the recently cleaned "shop bay" of my garage..

Post by: rejeep on April 24, 2017, 02:23:42 PM
Got it running yesterday.....
Swapped out the old distrib for a new electronic one, new plugs and wires.  Took a few tries with timing and clearing the fuel lines...
Clutch and transmission function well, amazing how bad old fuel smells..
Brakes need some attention next, currently no pedal.
Interior is great and original.. no plans to butcher this...

Old MC out.... The master cylinder placement on this is just plain moronic...

Factory remote reservoir not present, going to see what I can come up with...
Title: Re: FC 170

new lines and wheel ends... this machine goes and stops...

rebuilt carb waiting for a tank of fuel to burn through..
current problem is tires are like driving on lumpy matzaballs..
horrible shaking and vibration at anything over 30 mph.

Opinions on tires..

current size is 215/85R16
not looking to lift of modify the suspension so i think I'm sticking with the size..
I have seen some nice commercial tread tires.. or even ribbed tires...
don't see the need for an all terrain.. am I making a mistake?

I think this truck needs a set of Michelins ;)
Title: Re: FC 170
Post by: mr.mindless on May 21, 2017, 08:04:34 PM
Highway tires would ruin the look. I think it needs some aggressive all seasons at the very, very least. Or do I misunderstand?

Some commercial all position drive tires would seem right. Something almost like a military ND or a turf tire.

It's an interesting size for availability....

Original was 7.00 x 16

A radial tire with the proper weight rating would give you a better ride than a commercial tire, or a bias-ply tire.

I am old and hate hard riding things.

I wanted to recommend Interco's new "Cobalt M/T" as they're similar to the old gumbo's thread pattern. They don't have them in 16" :(

that was the first tire I thought of - I didn't mention it because it's such a modern look.
I don't think I've heard a bad word spoken about them, and i see a LOT of them.

It's fun...

Need to spend an hour or so on the directionals..
Once I burn through a tank of gas I'll put the rebuilt carb on and dial in the motor.

If I got serious it would need an overdrive...

4-5 neighborhood spins
2 Home depot trips
1 restaurant / committee meeting later.....

First drivability issue...
accelerator pedal rotted out.. quick afternoon fix as a precursor to new floor pans...
with the exception of an 1157 bulb, all lights functioning...
Sparton will need to be addressed.. directional won't "lock" in place, needs to be held down..

took my first real road trip with Big Red...
drove down from Rochester and looped around Canandaigua lake..
had some stores/customers to visit and some stuff at the cottage to pick up...

Amazing how well this guy drives..  not setting any land speed records, but the power is there.. had no issues going up and down the hills.  Tracked well, stops, and all gauge needles stayed right where they should.

I prob should address some of the cab rust, whack off the insanely heavy running boards, wire wheel and chassis coat the frame...
