Title: ZJ wonder 5.0
Post by: M4wdFab on August 01, 2016, 09:18:46 PM
confirmed seized motor tonight.

mechanicals look not to bad, front end looks tight
new tires

needs exhaust clamp at header, and tail pipe connected back to muffler.
one unibody spot soft, but not terrible.

have a 99 xj motor sitting on the shop floor i got for 300$ but there are many differances that will require most of the accessories to be swapped, the distributor and a few other sensors to be swapped.

waiting on chip to pick up his phone and respond to me.  it was Andies sons jeep that died and was towed.  still havent seen the title, dont want to start on it till i do

Wouldn't this be wonder 4.0 as the black 5.9 ZJ was not a Wonder?

Oh I get it, wonder 3.0 was white one.
Title: Re: ZJ wonder 5.0
Post by: M4wdFab on August 02, 2016, 10:14:12 PM
might bail on this thing

its pretty rotten, not sure its worth the bs and labor and parts to have maybe a 1200 ZJ in the end to drive

could more than 4x my investment after 3 hrs labor tonight.

drive shafts, trans/case pulled from underneath.  has good front axle shafts, and almost brand new street tires.

Cant get the motor to turn its so seized to get the TC off and get at the flywheel/tone ring i need to swap to the other 4.0  along with a bunch of sensors and the distributor probably.

motor has to be pulled for for scrap anyway

i suppose i could flip it over and pull the pan to get the crank out but that seems like alot of work lol

finished cutting this up last night, 124$ in scrap today at 127$/ton with 2180lbs?

seems odd math
Title: Re: ZJ wonder 5.0

does 127.00 / GT not mean 127$ per 2000lbs?

UPDATED

picked up another 97 4.0 ZJ limited today.  white NC truck.  200K on body, 99 4.0 swapped in at some point.
add pics looked terrible rot but with that parts list it was worth looking at

got there, front fenders were cut and peeling not rotted
3 holes were rock slam tears that then started to rust when brought to NY
entire unibody and under hood everywere you could eat off of it clean with some red dirt from wheeling down south.
kid was not happy after putting 3K in lift parts into and and forced to sell, going to Europe for a while in a couple weeks.
NC title thats notorized with out a buyer filled in  :o see how that goes tomorrow.

solid buy even if it needs a tranny.  somethign is shuttering or skipping at 2-4mph then cleans up fine.  have another 97 ZJ 4.0 trans sitting on the shop floor from Chips GF son jeep that got cut up ready.

CL ADD details:
built this jeep in NC and just dont have time for it
230k on body 140k on motor WITH RECEIPTS and full tuneup, battery, plugs, dizzy cap, reset timing, air filter etc... no oil burn, runs mint.
I would like to trade for an MPG car or car plus cash on your end if it is a rough car

4.0 inline 6

5.5 inch extended and adjustable 3 link long arms in the front
Rc adjustable arms in the rear
4.5 inch Rc springs
AWD full time t case swap from a V8
Rc swaybar quick disconnects
ARB bumper
Adjustable Trac bars
Rustys extended travel shocks
Steering stabilizer
Fog lights
2" spacers
33 inch TSL swampers 2 good tread 2 low tread
Every option available, heated seats, sunroof and leather

The bad stuff
Exhaust manifold gasket could be replaced
Needs alignment
Control arm bushings are shot
Power steering leaks
Transmission hose leaks
AC and heat blower motor does not work (fuse? Looking into it)
Sunroof is caulked shut but the motor works (previous owner did this)

plates transferred and registered.

Had to hustle on it in case they caught that the NC title was dated in march, and no weight on title... kid going to Europe next week for a year and his address and licences is still in NC.

Kid some how got it notarized without a buyer filled in lol
date modification and googled the weight lol
all set

put some miles on this thing today.  its functional.  talking with work people sounds like the shudder is the torque converter that has some vans let go.

threw up on the lift. serviced front brake sliders, replaced missing bolts, starter inspecting ever thing.

under body clean.

changed wheel spacers to 2" instead of 1.5" with missing studs and missing inner lug nuts  :o

gona try to cut and stretch rear links 1-1.5" in the rear to fit 35 SCRs.  eventually i think this thing is 1ton swap and 40's worthy.

night two on this guy.  serous progress.

adjustable rear control arms found to have super long threads, and i was able to safely increase the length of all 4 links by 1.5" to clear 35"s in the forward portion of the rear fender well, and trimming in the rear portion of the rear wells.

Front was good with a fender trim fix and ARB bumper trim.

Found front CV drive shaft to have exploded and shot CV joint at case.  was hopping that was my low speed shudder but no good.

trans was 1.5 quarts low

returned from a test drive, radiator hose torn and spraying. fixed.

runs mint looks mint.  started tending to things like bulbs and headliner fixes.

needs a good vacuuming but driving tomorrow!

rear stretch and trim i did last night worked out great

front trim fix also really cleaned up the lines.

ill throw some rock sliders on it to get rid of the only 4 rust holes on the truck.  rest of truck 100% clean with some southern clay red mud on it!

i think this thing is starting in 2nd though

reading says Governor Pressure Sensor and Solenoid may be the issue, or sometimes down stream o2 frayed / shorting wires flake out the GPS&S reading.

my first jeep was a 95 4.0 with same 42RE trans.

the TCM failed and it stuck in 3rd all the time.

sounds like a different issue, but just FYI.
Title: Re: ZJ wonder 5.0

this thing shudders off the line, maybe slipping, some time squeels, seems very sluggish to 30MPH or so, then high gear and OD are ok.   somp on it doing 45, it down shifts and goes.

guess i need to pay more attention and adjust the wheel so i can see the tach also would help lol

reverse no issues.
Title: Re: ZJ wonder 5.0
Post by: TrailTamer on August 26, 2016, 10:57:24 AM
I experienced a lot of 2nd or 3rd gear start (usually called as limp mode) with the 47re my dodge. 42-48re are relatively same on how they work.

To get your first gear; must be completely stopped, put the shifter in neutral and wait for a second or two at minimum then manual shift *straight* to 1st  gear then you should have your first gear again. When you're moving, manually up shift to confirm you have the 1-2-3-4 shifting. You'll need to come to a complete stop to shift back in neutral then shift straight to 1st again to get the 1st gear back for the take off.

Don't drive it too much if it's actually don't take off in first gear or you'll cook the trans quick.

The jeep don't throw any codes for the trans? They usually have codes set when either the governor transducer or the solenoid is malfunctioning.

The 95 have a separated module for the trans? I thought they're controlled by the PCM.

I had to manually shift my 47re from Denver>Las Vegas>Phoenix when the governor transducer broke on it. At least it was mostly on highway haha. Bah.

OBD I were weird, separate TCM on all the electronic transmissions 95 and down as I recall. I think that may be just 94-95 or maybe back to 93? hazy on that.

guess this thing has a factory alarm.

i locked doors with door button, came back unlocked driver door with key, horn beep and antitheft 2 seconds motor run only.

key lock and unlock to driver door like my 5.9 98 did not turn it off.  google let me know on 97 limited you have to lock and unlock the passenger door WTF

smooth cruse control at 70 no issues on thruway.  love this thing.

win.

new header pannel and 6 new lights installed.  had to pull ARB bumper
headlight switch swapped, does the same thing, only interior night lights come on when you push on or near it
center console lid with working latch swapped.
rear plate light fixed.  had to pull hatch plastics and fix a break in the wire harness.   not even sure how i found it but got lucky.
front left shock bushing changed
right swaybar disconnect fixed
steering stabilizer mount to tie rod fixed
horns connected back up
head lights adjusted.

whats left:
no obvious evap issues at canister, lines, or tank
dome light no work from any door when doors opened, but works of you turn them on
HTR control
hatch calendars
rear brakes screech 100% of time after sitting, no noise on lift odd.
headliner glue up spots

Dome light:
If you press and hold the rear light lens it will toggle between having the dome light come on with the door open and never coming on when the door opens.
Title: Re: ZJ wonder 5.0
Post by: M4wdFab on September 04, 2016, 03:49:42 PM
no go with dome lights.  may have to do with rear dome never comes on, bulb looks good.
front inner fenders pounded in for 35" turning full lock.
rear brakes disassembled and seized ebrake hardware freed up and lubed.
ebrake adjustor in seized and ebrakes adjusted and working.
tank dropped all looks good but found pump nut retainer ring pretty loose.  tightened and cleared code.

tires sold for 180 that came with this unit.  mismatched bald dry rot 33's on jeep wheels.  100$ in wheels 10$ in rubber.

investment down to 620$ for this unit    8)
Title: Re: ZJ wonder 5.0

trans still same
kind of annoying.

notice there is a hack fix on the TV cable.  going to try and swap that first, and adjust it as per web instructions.
if not, going to try and research governor sol / governor pressure sensor.
if that fails ill pull the trans and replace with spare.  lines weeping anyway.

still need to get inspected.  dropped tank, cant find LARGE evap leak to fix code.  smell gas in rear on multiple occasions upon shut down.  maybe its as simple as a bad gas cap?  hoses and clamps all new and tight.  canister lines look good.

There's any codes set for the trans?

When it shakes, the rpm bounces? It slips or it felt like it either upshift/downshift or TCC lock/unlock?
Title: Re: ZJ wonder 5.0
Post by: M4wdFab on September 23, 2016, 08:59:01 AM
rear hatch struts changed
gas cap changed- still smelled gas this morning
rear dome light bulb changed, still no rear dome or any dome lights ever.

Title: Re: ZJ wonder 5.0

The light isn't as simple as a factory dome override switch activated or inoperative, is it?
Title: Re: ZJ wonder 5.0
Post by: M4wdFab on September 23, 2016, 10:26:04 AM
seems inop

dome rear has a switch to turn on or off doom lights with doors open, i am thinking its a power issue in the hatch since i have never had that light or any of the doom lights come on.  door panel courtesy lights work as they should.

the vic is also gone, but sure if that has anything to do with it.

hopped on thruway yesterday to go see mom, realized tank was empty, stopped in Batavia to fill.  proceeded to pump 22.5 gallons into the jeep and 1.5 gallons on the ground.

Evap leak probably coming from top of tank somewhere lol.

guess the tank needs to be dropped again and inspected / gasket changed
bah

rebuilt front CV shaft and installed for winter 4x4
changed sway bar bushings
bipassed whatever is wrong with heater control so has working heat and defrost
dropped tank and changed fuel pump/sending unit.

tank to pump had NO gasket present- gross evap leak identified.
now fuel gage reads empty.  cant win.

first test plowing went well.  trans seems fine with case in low range and doesnt skip at all.  solid unit!

need to fix up the manual til option but power lift with ATV winch is wired.  need to clean up incab but its functional and tested!

ya its a much lighter 7'4" plow than my other two full size plows i have.

its lifted by an ATV winch, and has a manual tilt function.

Made a pin mount and structure out of old 2x2 square buggy links.  Was supprised the jeep only drops about 1/2" when you pick up the plow.

pushes snow fine, maybe needs the springs tightened up for frozen snow now in the lot

looks like it needs trans cooler lines and at least one ball joint
plow frame attached
cleaned out
needs a new switch for heater blower and should be good for winter duty minus a valid inspection sticker

all front end parts and brakes ordered.  i think i have unit bearings in stock.

silly that entire V8 steering is cheaper than one replacement tie rod end for the rugged ridge system thats on the jeep.

got a sticker yesterday, reg renewed today!

good for another 2 years whooo

anyone ever adjust the front band on a 42re?  looks fairly straight forward once you manage to get access to it.

i have shudder/ slipping from stop to 1-2MPH if load is anything over minimal untill speed gets above 3-5mph.  not RPM related.

Title: Re: ZJ wonder 5.0
Post by: mr.mindless on October 03, 2019, 11:13:12 AM
adjusted bands on the 44RE in my Dakota a few times. Easy procedure: tighten until touching (I think it's 12 or 18 inch-pounds or similar) and back off prescribed number of turns, and tighten the lock nut. One is on the side of the trans and one is in the pan IIRC.

ya did some reading.  its just buried to get to.

nothing that clearly relates to any symptom i have.  replaced the bag of normal parts you through at a 42RE  and nothing changed.  has not changed its performance or issue in 5 years, same issue with prevous owner also.

last issue with the jeep id like to fix after putting glass and parts into it this time around.  bah

Kim's Venza developed similar symptom forever ago. Toyota said full trans rebuild, it's gonna grenade within months. She's still driving it without having touched that $3500 job as far as I know. Probably put 60k on it since. It was light throttle 2-3 shift on a 6 speed. Felt fine in as full-boogie as a 2.7L 4cyl can do.

42RE is a lot easier to find than an AWD Toyota trans. Shame they're probably all raped.

i have a known good spare sitting downstairs same year.  lost the known good TQ in the move though.   pulling and swap is a pain with the long arm kit it has installed so that's why it hasn't occurred. Not hard failing also makes swap effort not exciting.

The shudder still occurs when shifted in “low”?

I still think it’s something to do with drivetrain. I remember it’s transmission mount is very ‘soft’ and allowing a ton of movement. Ratchet strap the t-case down onto the trans crossmember tight and go test drive and see what change.
Title: Re: ZJ wonder 5.0
Post by: M4wdFab on October 03, 2019, 01:46:39 PM
not going to waste my time with thinking it has anything to do with drive train.  100% obvious a trans issue.  yes occurs in D and 1, but seems better or different in 1.

ill pull the pan and adjust the rear band- that's the last thing i can do, then im done again trying to fix it.

not worth pulling and swapping without a catastrophic failure, especially with 3x the work involved with the long arm kit in the way.  it drives fine for me, and even plows snow fine if you are not a moron.
Title: Re: ZJ wonder 5.0

Rear band has nothing to do with your symptom. It’s only used when shifted into R or L
Title: Re: ZJ wonder 5.0
Post by: mr.mindless on October 10, 2019, 06:42:52 PM
That doesn’t make sense. Shifter position doesn’t impact what the trans does in 1st gear, whether in low/1/2/D

I don’t know what band is which but 1 and R typically share the lowest gear
Title: Re: ZJ wonder 5.0
Post by: M4wdFab on October 10, 2019, 08:53:09 PM
no L selection in this application.  12DNR

shifts and acts much better when manually shifted.  still has the issue though to some extent.
Title: Re: ZJ wonder 5.0
Post by: TrailTamer on October 11, 2019, 02:53:07 PM
Sorry, L and 1 means same thing. Service manual call 1st gear selection as “low”, so...

The rear band sparsely get used as it only engages when manually shifted into 1st/L or R. Pretty much why it’s buried inside as it hardly ever need adjusting for most people, or why you see a lot of old Ram plow trucks for sale saying “no reverse” from shifting between D and R all night long.

Trans get its first gear different way when shifter is in “D”

i would have but i have already done all the 42RE valve body fixes to this trans, and it functions great other than the 1st gear shudder/slippage.

the other trans was out of a ZJ that one of chips girlfriends sons seized the motor in on 390, supposed functional trans.  meh

swapped in the second trans, all seems to function and do all slush box things without complaint!

all gears work, down shifts, OD, ect.

just had a small drip per 4 seconds i noticed after filling but pretended i didnt see it before test drive.  back on the lift after i remembered i left one of cooler lines finger tight that i had to swap, all good now!

i guess the jeep will get a muffler and tail pipe, a trans pan gasket and filter, and look at some front steering leaks.  other wise if i can get the monitors to set maybe ill try to get a sticker this week and get reg renewed.

ran to buffalo and back tonight in this hog.

wasn't making temp on the way down past 130, so stopped mid way home and beat on the thermostat housing which it then sat at 210- got the 5th of 7 emissions monitors to set shortly after that.  6th should run purge tomorrow since the tank is now between 1/4 and 3/4 and should be able to pass plug in even if the last one doesnt run.

trans and cruse works great.

id say the tires are a mess, needs a valve cover gasket (constant oil burn smell if fresh air intake HVAC is on), needs probably full exhaust over haul and brakes are dragging /squeaking intermittently from sitting so long.

otherwise, plenty fine for winter duty if it sticks around.

pushed a lot of snow this morning, might need to put some drive SCRs on the front for winter instead of steer cuts, but other wise she hawgs pretty good with the new to it transmission.

it does want to stall now though when going from revers to drive or drive to reverse.  need to google that and see if its something that can be fixed / adjusted.

3.54 gears are blown.  i started dissasembly thinking it was an 8,25 which i had a used set in my pile- realized its a D35 bah.

i have a YJ 3.07 gear set that i think is the same and could pull the front drive shaft

i kinda need the jeep this week.  RAM is blue sticker, needs brakes and tires and inspection done bah

I guess if i slap in the 3.07s in ill confirm YJ sets are same to a ZJ D35, and either order a 50$ used gear set off ebay,  I do have a used set of 4.56 gears for the front low pinion D30, so i could commit a sin and order 4.56 gears for the D35 lol bah

best i can tell says all D35 gear sets are same across all jeep yj XJ MJ ZJ WJ  with maybe a different pinion seal and spider gear differences of course.

amazon has 139$ 4.56 D35 gear sets and i already have the 3.54 and up carrier.  have mismatched stuff for the front in stock.  i guess ill go that way, but to get it off the lift it will get 3.07s slapped in it.  its already apart and C clip, o well.

more 42RE sighs.

trans performs 100% cold, but very shortly once it warms up begins to want to "stay locked up" when coming to a stop (occasionally), and after a short drive will lock and stall engine if you shift to reverse (100% of time warm) from park/neutral.  like if you pull into a parking spot at a store, it better be a pull through...

my research shows:

could be issue with brake switch not giving signal to unlock TC
bad TCC solonoid
bad TC (less than 500miles on new TC when trans installed)

not really anything i can find that sounds like a smoking gun

annoying!

i have had this transmission out twice now, and i have fixed or bipassed cooler lines at least 2 other times.

how is it that i did not realized until today there is a check valve in one of the cooler lines?

i was flushing out the cooler with air and noticed it only going one way.  pulled the pan and valve body today and did the HD upgrade kit.  filter and magnet was packed with fines but not chunks or hard parts in the pan.

if this doesn't change it, im guessing the new torque converter has failed or the lockup solenoid is intermittently bad.

and zero change with the 42RE fix kit, filter, fluids.  another 150$ down the drain.

i guess next will be a brake light switch and then a lockup solenoid- but its probably better to just get another jeep.  really sad this TN truck still has no exterior rust and isnt falling apart.

soleniods are common issues. no cracked accumulator pistons when you did the upgrades? I remember that being a thing from my Dakota days

the govenor pressure sensor / solenoid is the well known failure in the 42RE and apparently a big snap ring breaks and you loose reverse and then 4th.

neither were issues in both transmissions i have.

i have found one or two threads that describe exactly what i have by the poster, but no clear resolution ever posted.

ill try the TCC solenoid and brake switch next time its back in the shop.  had to put the snow plow back on today.

new shoes mounted today.

tire machine wires pretty good- plenty of room for a 35 or 37

these measure out at about 33"

empty equipment trailer behind this unit almost deleted the trailer hitch.  apparently more structural rot than i had though.

wonder if the dealer will put a new hitch on for the exploding gas tank rear collision fix recall, or if crusty rotten brokenness deems it safe enough not to replace.

tried some seat covers as ZJ seat bottoms are impossible to find in 2022

better than $29.95 rando ones but not sure worth the 109$ i spent.  bottoms fit nice, backs are too loose.  bottoms need better side fastening.

TCC solenoid came in and i have a 5 gal bucket of sny ATF+4 now.

im really starting to think its a valve body problem.  i have another 42re i could rob the valve body from and it can be changed from underneath.  i guess i have to think if i should do that first or second.  i guess its only fluid and pan gaskets

spare trans on the bench and pulled apart, a few you tube videos later jeep on lift, valve body pulled.

plan is to swap valve bodies, adjust both bands, replace governor and pressure sensor, replace lockup solenoid and harness, fresh filter and fluid.

reverse band was about 2 turns too loose.... not sure what that means meh.

might be fixed or at least more better?

it just kinda lugs a little bit now in reverse now but doesnt lock up and clank / stall any more.

asked will if he has a fancy scan tool i can borrow

one thing thats different.  if you do a rolling shift from drive to reverse, it doesnt go into revers unless you hit gas.

found one thread said fix was pump replacement.  maybe scan tool will say if pump pressure is low?
bah

at least i didnt break it worse doing all what i did.

no codes but has 2 monitors not set, wont pass.  evap and catalist.  cant remember when last dead battery was but has to be weeks and hundreds of miles ago so thats a bummer.

sticker up, i guess it will get a buffalo trip to hopefully set monitors.
