Title: SEMA Show 2015
Post by: JEEPWERX on November 04, 2015, 08:57:29 PM
Last night we arrived back in Vegas after a road trip to San Diego.
Headed over to Vegas 4x4 for their BBQ.
The owner Larry Nickel is one of the owners of Crawl Magazine. He and his wide Wendy are great people and have become great friends.
Larry runs his LJ in the 4500 Class Stock Modified.

We got a chance to run into Ryan and Liz yesterday afternoon.  They are adjusting well to the move!

We made it to bed at a reasonable hour last night and we're actually able to make it on the shuttle to the convention center this morning.
To avoid the shuttle this afternoon,  we called my brother and his friend and talked them into picking us up tonight.

Heading to the House of Blues tonight for the Optima Batteries Short Film Competition. Will Gentile from Heavy Metal concepts is a finalist. Can't wait to see it.

Talked to so many people today, my brain is fried!
Time for some more photos!

Caught a ride with our partners from Nemesis Industries from Vegas to St George Utah to Pick up our New RV. Then we parked it at a friends house!
Free WiFi and free shuttle service for downtown shopping and dining. Can't go wrong with that!

Took a good portion of Route 66.
Never been on the Historic Sections before.
Day 1
Left St George Utah Tues aprox. 2pm headed back south to Vegas because everywhere else was getting snow. Very high winds made it fun for the first few hours of driving.
Spent our first night in Winslow Arizona Walmart 28 degrees

Day 2 on interstate 40
Un eventful. Settling in very quickly with the new RV.
Air Ride suspension and brakes are absolutely amazing.
I've never felt so good after driving so far.
Spent the night in Amarillo Texas Walmart

Day 3
More wind in Oklahoma.  But so much nicer driving the freightliner compared to the Kodiak.
Finally getting the hang of filling both 50 gallon fuel tanks to the max.
First 2 fill ups were a Fuzz shy of full!
Just settling in now at Walmart # 3 Collinsville, Illinois off I70

M2
350 HP Merc, ambulance package, 6 speed Allison 4th gen push button

1,800 miles into the trip we found the Economy Mode on the transmission, rides nice and easy and better mileage!

We just got charged double on the t-way because we are over 7'-6".... has anyone ever heard of that? Now they are charging for air space on the t-way? I think Erik's work van is taller than that!

High vs low, you bet!
53' trailers get charged 2x a 48' too - pre-ezpass they would actually hand you two toll tickets.

Thruway authority only doesn't seem greedy if you're a passenger car.

$30 (4 axles) to cross PA/NJ bridge each way this past Monday...  :o

Must have to move farther south or west.

Can't believe NYS  is doubling the charge for being taller than 7'-6". What a ripoff. Funny how using EZ pass for the last 18 years or so you don't realize what they are charging.
I'm 90% sure my RV EZ pass does not catch that.

Trip update...
Arrived home last night at 1130pm
2700 miles total which include detours like running route 66 for a few hours and a quick sight seeing trip through the Petrified Forest National Park.

Truck portion of the RV worked flawless. Air brakes, 2 engine brake settings, air suspension and air seats are the highlights I'm not sure how I ever drove across the country as many times as i have without?
Only changes desired are...
Headlamp upgrade
Stabilize driving lights (bumper vibrates at speed)
Maybe upgrade the speakers in the cab, low volume = low quality
Exhaust Temp Gauge
More in cab storage
New satellite radio antenna
Aux jack extension

RV has some quirks. But nothing I didnt expect in a 7 year old machine.
Items to replace...
Screen door
Slide out canopies(dryrot)
Rear tires are original (steers) 1 has dryrot
House batteries are mismatched and not holding charge as long as required. Currently have 3. Space for 6.
Misc knob and latch adjustments.
Slide out rail and seal lubrication required.
Generator maintenance  (oil change, fuel filter, glow plug, clean spark arrestor, air filter)
It's quieter than most I've heard.

Time for a new toilet as well. Getting some tank odor in the batbroom. Ball valve doesn't always close completely unless you slam it closed.

Funny... alot of the above items are the same items we just replaced or repaired  in our 9 year old Gulfstream.

All in all, the new rv made for a so much more enjoyable trip. Previous trips to California and Utah have left me completely exhausted and beat up from driving so long.
Not now...
I'm ready to turn around and go back.

after doing some traveling i cant really complain about the nys t-way, from 490 to syr 690 its $3.20, to take the p.a. 479 to philly is twice the distance but about $25 to travel

the height is an issue of weight calculation..
thats why there is an exception for motorhomes... (height doesn't equal weight)
HUT tax can't apply to all non CDL vehicles.. hence the exception and height issue..

the throughway is one of the best kept roads in the nation.. and also have some of the heaviest travel..

take 5/20, 390, or rt 17 next time..  poorly lit, not priority for plows and much longer in terms of time..

I have no issue paying for something and tolls pay for something..

motor home looks awesome..use in good health and on well maintained roads :)

They keep using money towards the canal. .... pave  the canal and have two main thruways..... I don't own a barge to send down the canal. We have very nice lakes for boats

I’ll beg to differ on well-maintained, especially the downstate bridges and the ultra lumpy new sections around Buffalo and Syracuse.

I prefer 390 and most of 86 to 90 any day. But I’ve definitely driven MUCH worse elsewhere.

I am not sure of that.  I pay the same rate with my 5th wheel camper as tractor trailers because it is over 7'6".  Bumper pulls are cheaper.  Ridiculous

I followed a friend with the same truck and a bumper pull, same route, and he was considerably cheaper.

I just know what the DOT auditor told us..
from the horses mouth

5th wheel and tractor trailer are different than strait truck or motor home.. (single chassis w/single or multiple axles)

got that again from friendly DOT investigator..

more than happy to send my guideline book out.. then I can hire you as a consultant :o
