Post by: mr.mindless on August 20, 2014, 02:05:10 PM
Sure could. Would suck in it's class since it doesn't meet buggy rules, but would still be fun!

Bernie's said they're all over near the park for $400-700

would just be 4 cyl truck class? or does it need to be 4x4 for line mt 4 cyl?
Title: Re: bro lite revolution

Something about remote resi shocks in rules too I thought? As in remote resi in automatically puts you in buggy class
Title: Re: bro lite revolution
Post by: mr.mindless on August 20, 2014, 02:43:09 PM
I was expecting 4cyl without reading anything. I'm sure some of the 6cyl class cars have remotes. maybe it could fit unlimited buggy, being 4x2?

The buggies are on similar size tires, with some shock tuning I think it could be a 'go'

Downside for at least three of us is that it would run at the same time as the U4 class cars.

79hp @ 3800 RPM (1983 - 1985) Manual
82hp @ 4200 RPM (1983 - 1985) Auto
90hp @ 4000 RPM (1986 - 1988)
100hp @ 4600 RPM (1989 - 1995)
112hp @ 4800 RPM (1996 - 1997)

Looks like you really want a 96 or 97

DOM required is lame
open for spendy shocks is lame

all other rules good.

They have a Fox shock package, No hydro bumps is lame, Im ok with DOM, HREW would be fine, but for that cage it might cost $200 more for DOM, Meh

I like spendy shocks, they are shiny and nice........

Ranger 8. 8 I guess will work fine. 5.13 gears
Title: Re: bro lite revolution
Post by: luvmyxj on September 30, 2014, 07:48:19 PM
From what I've found your truck may not have a 8.8, they were standard in 4.0l models but can't find about 4 bangers, 6.14 is the deepest you can find, newer 8.8 have 31 spline older are 28spline, rangers never had disk brakes
Title: Re: bro lite revolution
Post by: Ryan on September 30, 2014, 07:55:59 PM
Yea, it will have a 7.5" but swapping in a Ranger 8.8 should be legal. 6.13 might be too deep, wow.
Title: Re: bro lite revolution
Post by: mr.mindless on September 30, 2014, 09:03:39 PM
6.13? Holy crap. Might use 4th gear with those if you can keep a pinion in it!

Found a ton on CL but they either want a fortune or they are rotten. I'd rather pay a few bucks more for less rust. But 1800 seems like top end for a 96-97 2wd ranger

I think I would like 1.750x .095" main hoops, 1.5"x.095" braces, door bars and shock mount areas, 1.25"x.095 seat mounts and other non-load places. Get some 16ga 1" square for mounting of bedsides and fenders.

What are the thoughts? Max weight on the full Ranger will be about 2400-2600 when done and complete. The title says 2988, removing 400 to 500 seems reasonable. The seats weighed about 75 on their own.

sounds good, smaller quantity of 3 sizes will bump price
what like?
60' of 1.75
40' of 1.5
20' of 1.25
20' of 16g 1" square
for each car?

Title: Re: bro lite revolution

1x5"x.120 or similar strength, 1.75"x.095 is similar strength. I believe Tim used it on his main hoops as well.

Tubing with a smaller diameter or thinner than .120″ may be used for areas not mentioned above.

to me, that means areas above need 120    doesnt say similar anywhere.  lets clear this up

If you got confirmation from the higher ups that .095 is acceptable. Then I guess I'm ok.
Even though personally I would rather build with 1.75 x .120
How much more weight realistic

A body that's got a main structural element (windsheild) removed, and is potentially chopped up significantly...

Not saying 1.75 x .095 isn't enough - just saying don't count on a body that you're gutting for weight, seat clearance, etc.

Am I reading the rules correctly?
"Differentials are open"
I assume open means no restrictions.
The next line of the rules reads "ring and pinion ratios are open"

So we can swap in any rear axle.
Need some disc brakes.
But they"must remain stock"

Shit is ROUGH.

I don't think you can make something front engined and 500# heavier get out of its own way on that course like a VW buggy can. I'm _ALL_ for you proving me wrong - and it might be fun anyway (in a trail tampon sort of way).

what are you guys thinking for front bump stops?

this is the biggest area of consern on these trucks for me to get them to not blow apart on jumps
Title: Re: bro lite revolution
Post by: mr.mindless on March 10, 2015, 10:37:38 AM
I haven't looked closely at the beams or radius arms to see how/where the shocks mount. Secondary suspensions are banned per rules but I've got to assume static rubber bump stops are permissible.

Without having looked at anything yet, I'm planning to set shock mounting to bottom the shock before frame contact, and run a shaft stop on the shock, assuming they have no internal cushion. Hard/med/soft available http://www.speedwaymotors.com/Speedthane-223539-Blue-Bump-Stop-2-1-4-Inch-Height-Hard,59315.html

Perhaps a rubber bump between the frame and beam as well - there may be something factory there already? In case the shaft stops blow apart, or a hard hit blows through them.
Title: Re: bro lite revolution
Post by: M4wdFab on March 10, 2015, 10:41:30 AM
factory stop on the frame there.

rules say rubber or poly bump stops and limit straps allowed.

Not sure if those shock stoppers are in the spirit of the rules.  id def not set it up to bottom the shock out though lol
Title: Re: bro lite revolution
Post by: M4wdFab on March 10, 2015, 10:44:53 AM
i was thinking something like this for the front

not wanting to pull a once race one replacement like 571 was though.
Title: Re: bro lite revolution
Post by: M4wdFab on March 10, 2015, 10:50:51 AM
harness tip:

the inertia switch located in the pass foot well kills motor (fuel pump?).  bi pass and short pink and green wire.  everything else under the dash junk.

Title: Re: bro lite revolution
Post by: mr.mindless on March 10, 2015, 11:10:10 AM
maybe better explaination of my thought:

in order of contact from droop to compression:

shock shaft bump
upgraded bump in factory location
fully crushed shaft bump
fully crushed factory location bump stop
~1/2" to shock bottomed
~1/4" to beam crashed to bare frame

should I reverse the last two so if all bump stops fail, the beam crashes the frame before the shock fully bottoms? Laying it out like that, I think you're right. Frame should crash with ~1/8" of shock left. With stops in place, probably wasting about the top inch of shock travel but hopefully won't ever hurt the most expensive part of the truck :)
Title: Re: bro lite revolution
Post by: JEEPWERX on March 10, 2015, 12:46:49 PM
I'd agree. Frame contact before shock fully compressed. I've run the daystar shock bumps a that slip over the end eye on my street CJ7. They seemed to work fairly well on and offroad. They were fairly soft compound. My guess is multiple hard Impacts and they will be getting replaced every race. Can't remember if they offered a harder compound.
I planned to give these bumps a try. They fit the rules and my guess was that a poly bump would hold up better when it's contained within a cylinder.
 Stinger Bump Stops.flv: http://youtu.be/UtJm8W_BIjs  (http://Stinger Bump Stops.flv: http://youtu.be/UtJm8W_BIjs)
Have to look closer t the truck when I can dig it out of the snow sliding off my shop roof. :(
Title: Re: bro lite revolution
Post by: M4wdFab on March 10, 2015, 12:51:29 PM
i doubt those will be allowed

Mike dont for get you can put any size shock, probably a 12 or 14 on something that travels 8" at most.... not like 1/8" tolerances need to be in to play...
Title: Re: bro lite revolution
Post by: JEEPWERX on March 10, 2015, 01:08:04 PM
Rules say rubber or poly bumpstops allowed.
It's not air or hydro it's some sort of rubber /poly contained within a tube with a extension shaft. Sounds legal to me.
Title: Re: bro lite revolution
Post by: M4wdFab on March 10, 2015, 01:15:28 PM

Title: Re: bro lite revolution
Post by: JEEPWERX on March 10, 2015, 01:16:45 PM

i can only find 3 degree camber eccentrics, but i guess some trucks came with non cast beams you can bend

Mine are cast.

cast into at least the lead beam is something like "do not weld cut drill this part"

So I'm trying to find shocks. I have these FOX  part numbers:

FOX 2.0”x10” & 2.0”x12”

SKU: FOX-980-02-032-BL

SKU: FOX-980-02-034-BL

The "BL" must be custom Bro Light valving. I can find the FOX-980-02-032 all over the internet, including Amazon:
http://www.amazon.com/Fox-Racing-980-02-032-Emulsion-Reservoir/dp/B009X1THHY

Talked to Tim, he doesn't have any shocks and neither does Miller.
Mike Mike - do you have shocks yet? I know Smike's are on order.

I may just retire my profender 14s to the brolite. They're probably not worth anything to sell anyway, and that's a grand I could spend on 2.5s for the real car instead - assuming I can find room for 14s up front.

ya they are fiberglass, they just screw on to the side of the bed with like 10 torx bolts.  we rolled a truck back over on to its wheels and they came right off.  couple niks and cracks near the tail lights that ill trim out, so not worth anything to yard.  at least 3 clean sets within view

Title: Re: bro lite revolution

5.3 chevies are VERY in the spirit as far as being cheap easy and everywhere.

My first instinct is to be VERY excited. My second is to be terrified. That’s a lot of horses for activities.

Staying 4x2? If so, not nearly as scary.

I don’t think we could make 4x4 chevy frontends hold up to jumping with stock motor placement plus stock suspension design. Too much weight to live.

I’m not sure what the 4x2 frontend look like but at least we wouldn’t be trashing cv axles constantly when ball joints blow apart.

I think they will naturally need to create a class for the big motors. But it will be very difficult to find tracks that have the appropriate run off and safety barriers in place for that much more speed and weight.

That's the description of the fear I'm feeling. Runoff and barriers are the need. We can't be having headons or hitting Jerseys square on, I don't want to design things that will let us get hurt. If we get into v8 4x4s we'll be going plenty fast to be thinking about crumple zones and safety cells in a short course world so a tee bone or square hit to a wall doesn't kill somebody.

SCHEDULE UPDATE!!
You have been asking, here is what we have so far.
5/14 - Round 1 at Rolling W Ranch - West Sunbury, PA
7/30-7/31 - Round 2 & 3 at Bark River, MI (with TORC, pro classes run this weekend also)
9/10-9/11 - Round 4 & 5 - Rolling W Ranch double header
We will have 1 or 2 more races, but the weekends are not selected yet. They will potentially be points races, but may also treat them as stand alone cup races, based on when we can get the details finalized.
We will have a points championship this year! We will also post full results on finishing order, unlike last year... Each year we get a little better.
Entry fees will be $50/weekend + whatever the venue is going to charge us. This money will be reinvested into the program, to help us grow and get better. Looking forward to a great 2016!!

brolite is all about being as cheap as possible but keeping the racing fun and cool factor

we had 4 guys that spent 3 hours pulling parts for varous needs.  had a pretty good pile going that i did negotiation on.  got him to 100$ for all, which after we settled i was in for less than 50$ for the bedsides.

new aftermarket they are about 450$ a pair.

i think i just discovered that 2001-2003 ranger hoods are fiberglass

need to check j&j next time

Aluminum.  I just scrapped one.  It was hosed.

aluminum and steel were options, but the  01-03 "powerdome" hood was a fiberglass-like composite material. Those came on XLT 4x4's and Edge trim package trucks

racers, send this in to scott.  he will ask to fill in a little identification form, truck picture, driver head shot

ATTENTION RACERS!
We are a month away from the first race of the season and I need some information from you. If you have a truck and are planning on racing at the first race of the season, I need you to "register" this year.
Please email me at broliteracing@gmail.com I will send you a driver information sheet and get you on the list. I'm trying to be a little more organized this year and need your help!

i was curious how fast i was going on the straight before the step up jump

2nd gear is 2.2 or 2.25 depending on which Manual 5 speed, 4.10 gears, read line is 6250 from the factory, 26.7" diameter tire (215 70 r15)

thats 55.1mph  (wheel speed)

i was bouncing off the rev in 2nd just about 2 truck lengths before the jump consistently after failing to gain anything from shifting to 3rd.
Title: Re: bro lite revolution
Post by: mr.mindless on May 16, 2016, 01:53:50 PM
I was hitting 55-60 in second at jeffs. Not sure how accurate that is with the tire change but I expect within 15%.

Was hitting 50 before the lane change into the jump whose video I posted

ADS will build in less than a week. Our Bro Lite shocks were ready to rock out of the box, built custom for our type of racing and jumping. Def more expensive than Fox - BUT - you can get them when you need them, and they will call/email you back!

-AC may be removed.
-Emissions equipment may be removed
-Stock air box may be removed and replaced with a K&N style filter
-Engine must remain in stock location but engine mounts may be replaced with aftermarket style mounts.
-Factory OEM block and head(s) must be used and may not be modified.
-All engine internal parts must remain stock or OEM replacement.
-Exhaust system is open.

some trucks are factory non power steering.

rock auto has radius arms back in stock, i just ordered two more and bushings.   so both my trucks will have new arms and a spare in the trailer.

oh really! may be able to do some easier swapping, then, if there's a bolt-on box.

need to look at ratios vs quickeners, and if it's a standard saginaw box there may be a TON of different options out there.

I just picked an old year at random, 84 I think.
power and manual boxes listed. look interchangeable at a glance

pitman listed arms all specify p/s

also lists a steering rack bellows for manual steering. WTF? no steering racks listed - and that would be completely impossible with TTB anyway.

I'm hanging on for another year to give Miller/ Decker/ Blyler a chance to come back. I think UTVs might be filling that niche for them but I sure like 1/10th the price of a UTV for this.

I think the long distances are hurting participation and it'd help to have events move around a bit more. Not a ton of trucks near my favorite track (RollingW). I'm sure the VT crew says the same thing when they drew none of us for the first Monson race this year.

awesome day of racing!  only 3 of us showed up so they put us with v8 4x4 trucks.  suprisingly we were almost faster than them.  i led the first heat for 4 laps and then finally 2 v8s got by along with dillon right at the checker to get around me bah!

second heat opposite direction was much harder on our 2wd trucks the the track was over watered also.  4x4 v8s took over alot quicker, dillon won again.

Mike had clutch issues both heats that slowed him down.  he did get 2017 points series champion though!

Talked to that Bill Smith guy via FB chat- he seems cool.  bought Ayersmans truck, and is planing for June 5th

i told JJ to order his clutch parts he needs and to drop it off to get him to come out too.  would be cool to get 5 trucks or more to rolling W

Mike you think about bringing 571 to V8 4x4 or 4x2 class?  id do it

i have like 4 XJ steering pumps.  i think i might try to adapt.

Bill was talking about running an electric water pump he had that bolts up.

hoping my motor is not hurt, it flogged it pretty hard with no water pump for 2 laps till it pulled timing enough to die.

I let all the steam out of mine first time and it was fine the second. They’re pretty tough motors.

Friday i plan to work on mine.

Oh nice.

I was thinking of heading out with buggy for shakedown but haven’t touched it at all yet. Worked a lot for a day off…. Waiting at vet now. 30m behind appointment time so far but got in in a day so I shouldn’t gripe.

i bush hawged the 3' tall infield of the track this afternoon!  the cub took it great.  first time i have worked the machine at load for sustained 3-4 hours.

JJ had done some skid steer work last night and He and Tucker were doing something with a water truck of some sort so didnt see them much.  sun baked my arms and knees pretty good so i took off when i was done!  farm hat and cooler was nice but need to throw some sunscreen in the IH for car show season i guess.

Super crunched JK and crying Female in parking lot.  saw the jeep was beached and left when i left.

Landed safe at rolling w. Left home at about 9, had the most relaxed drive down… so nice. I didn’t think I’d make it in one shot.

Sheep on the other side of the fence are saying hi. 8 or so other rigs here, one campfire still going.

whats the rules for an XJ in 2wd 6cyl Rally that garys daughter rules in?

pull the lights, weld the diff, new spicer joints on the rear drive shaft, pull the front shaft, and trick the trans to hit OD in 4 low?

yeah that's about it.

Sarah kept threatening to want to send her Malibu in Rally class but won't help with the prep and who wants to weld a FWD diff for a one-off throwaway? XJ/WJ 6 ought to be a winner. They usually run FWD not RWD iirc. With the right tires I think I'd rather be rear ¯\_(?)_/¯
Title: Re: bro lite revolution
Post by: M4wdFab on August 23, 2022, 10:12:57 PM
pretty sure Garys daughter runs mostly RWD because i remember him saying she keeps breaking the drive shaft yoke at the rear axle landing too much under power

i think FWD was only run when it was super slopy

can you just cut a hole in the trans housing, drain, weld, then patch with zip screws / rtv lol?

Gross intake leak made mine not run. Nothing else found immediately. No real checkout done yet.

I don’t have any duct tape at all it seems. Just the good aluminum tape, packing tape, and painters tape lol

rough weekend for the 4 trucks.  i think the most we have ever wrenched Saturday night on them for a race weekend

my truck:
shit fuel system both races saturday, pulled off.
cleaned and changed remaining fuel lines on pickup- mush found in pickup and AN bulkhead- fixed for sunday ran good
rear brake hard line failure, pinched off.
sunday ran hard but last in the muck first race.  second race got hit hard and broke wheel/hub/drum off passenger side rear

Wills truck- he spun and endo'd / rolled saturday 2nd race.
cut rad hose
broke power steering pulley from impact
leaking t stat housing
other
all fixed and he won the money sunday

Jeffs aussie truck piloted by Jeremy
rolled sat
Hard beam bending damage.  lots of chain and binders used to bend beam back so would allow steering
mechanical clutch rod issue- required fab and welding
couple new body smacks
lost a few beads, did well for first time driver

Jeff in MikeMikes truck
power steering was in op at start sat
jeff won money saturday
sunday, another belt, a vacated pS pulley replaced
clutch locked, found C clip poped out and fixed
punctured clutch line from res to master, changed
PS line leaking, shortened, still failed
1 or 2 belts failed
sunday race died upon landing- found a blown fuel pump fues in pits after
other
my truck sitting on back of it and pushed the train into trailer

sat weather and racing was awesome.  super disappointed i didnt have a running truck.  Sunday was rain all day, but still fun.
