Completed:

1) Side nerf bars added and tested.

2)Rear brake lines replaced and rerouted with protection added.

Working on:

Shifting / Rev limit problems.

After some hots laps in 4lo and 4hi,  I noticed that the tranny shifts perfect in 4hi.
In 4lo the tranny will hold 1st until 4500 RPM and sometimes beyond (rev limit)

I looked through my wiring diagrams and found that the NP241C has a ball switch that shorts to ground when the case is in low range. This signal is sent to the PCM to to tell the tranny it has adjusted shift points.

I also think my fuel pump is failing. >:(  It was NEW...
Title: Re: Gif Built Buggy
Post by: gif on March 20, 2012, 09:35:07 AM
When the PCM or VCM 4WD-low input signal (circuit 1694) is high (approximately 12 volts) the computer will assume the truck is in a range other than 4WD-low and will command the shift points based on the truck being in 4WD-high or 2WD-high. If the truck is really in four-low, the upshifts will be late for the given throttle opening. In addition, the truck will exhibit overly sensitive forced throttle downshifts.
In each case the truck will exhibit conditions which will be objectionable to the customer, but will not set any trouble codes (1993-1995 models).

Well I think I got all the bugs worked out.    Buggy felt very solid yesterday.

To do list:

Change out the engine break in oil for full synthetic oil.

Build removable spare tire carrier.

Move gas pedal over 1"

Grip tape on floors.

Title: Re: Gif Built Buggy
Post by: gif on July 02, 2012, 01:07:57 PM
Found my failure:

Turns out that my super fancy removable subframe/skid plate was not up to the task.  It looks like it took a huge hit right in front of the tranny mount and bent the whole belly upward.  The transfer case was mounted closer to the cross member so it did not move.  The motor mounts are crazy strong so they did not move.

So it was like breaking a stick over your knee.  It point loaded in the middle.    "SNAP"

on the bright side it's an explainable failure, I always look at that as a good thing.

I picked up another 4L60E.  So im going to give this drivetrain setup another try.

I like the lower gearing combo of the tranny and case.

Just need to over build the subframe this time.

Speaking of,   Smike can you get any size / wall tube?

Now I just need to figure out my low oil pressure.

So,  low oil pressure is from cam bearings that got hammered.
Theory is that I had too much oil in the pan and the crank was splashing into a froth.
Aerated oil is not good for an IC engine.

Title: Re: Gif Built Buggy
Post by: M4wdFab on July 18, 2012, 12:27:41 AM
i call bs on too much oil   i run at least 2 quarts over any motor i race   haha
Title: Re: Gif Built Buggy
Post by: gif on August 20, 2012, 03:01:38 PM
Buggy is sad.

I removed the engine for repairs and cut out ALL of the subframe and skidplate.

I got the engine back with new cam bearings and started mocking the new subframe.  2x2x.25" wall box tube with .25" skid plate. I'm going for beef,  screw light weight...

I also changed the tranny mount so that its not part of the lower subframe.

I hope to have this thing ready for Big Dogs.

Then it will be time for final assembly (again).  ::)

Installing the engine and tranny is like a bar puzzle now.

Subframe complete.

Most of the little mods are done to allow for the new chassis.

Transfercase comes out the top now.  I made the scatter shield removeable.

also built a type of tranny mount "sling" to keep everything off the subframe/skidplate.

new belly and skid worked great.   was a nice feeling knowing i could bash rocks and not hurt it. ;D

Broke the front drive shaft 1 hour into the first day. boo.   but some thin wheel work and parking lot welding and she was good to go for the rest of the weekend. thanks to smike for the use of his welder.

Rear axle hub seal leaks now.
Front pass side upper link mount took a beating, still works, but not pretty anymore...

change/top off some fluids and shes good to go.

I think on board air is next for this pig.

Working on some OBA.

York 210 AC with twin V belt clutch.

I spun a serpentine off a power steering pulley and then spun down the v belt pulley
pressed the serp on and welded it.

Cut the factory AC bracket to make room for the York.

Then made up a new mount bracket.  Still need to make up the top side of the bracket.

Also need a small brace on the bottom side.

Welded up a small stainless tank and some fittings.
Installed an air intake filter, check valve, oil drop out filter, and pressure blow off.
All plumbed with stainless.

Just waiting on the 90-120 PSI pressure switch.

i see to still cut brand new KRTs at 25psi.

i guess its all how and where you put your foot down.

id skip on the crawlers, most people say the KRT is 90% of the crawler with 10X the side wall.

for a wreck wheeler IROKs or Pitbuls, or SX's seem to do the job if you dont drive like you stole it... which apparently i have forgotten how that works.

I had to use way more Simple Green than I normally do  to get them to slip on the rim.
Took me 2 hours of fucking with it to figure out I had to douche the thing to get it to go on.

But they look great on a 10" wide rim.   Thanks Ryan!

Its crazy slick on tire rubber.   I picked up a new bottle today to do the last three tires.   The new bottle has a "foam" setting.
They went on easy!   My old bottle must have been thinned out.

As a bonus it cleans your tires and rims...

I  run 5" of up stroke and 11" of droop on the front.

Rear is 8" up and down.

How did the Reds do?

REDS are the shit!

I need to learn to drive them.    My weak link is no longer traction!  :o
I guess I need to upgrade my rear driveshaft joints.
Im going to need new 35 spline stubs for the front too.  I thought those were going to be the first to go...

Got to pull the tranny and get it rebuilt.  was slipping bad in REV.

But I was getting lazy picking lines because they were going up everything.
The rear driveshaft was case in point.   I was hard into a big rock on the front axle and gas it to try to roll the rock (J truck style  ::)) but the REDS did not slip one bit, so BANG!

Doing 1410 shafts is almost the same cost. Just gotta find the right parts. Super duty rear shafts are 1410 2 piece on some trucks. I got mine on ebay for $100 or something. That gets you all parts necessary for a 2 piece front shaft.

My junk yard search was a good one.
I scored a Ford Super Duty front driveshaft and a front shaft from a late 80's blazer.

The Ford shaft is a great source for 1 ton parts.

First, the CV is a true Spicer 1350.  Next the Slip yoke is also a 1350 with a 1.5" 16 spline.

For my use I need to mod the flange to mate to the stock 241 output flange.

The R3 GM is on the right.

The Ford center hole is only 2".    So I had to open it up to the GM 3.125"

The blazer front shaft is a 1/2 ton CV 1310. The drive shaft I broke uses this style.

On my driveshaft the slip yoke is a Ford 1350  with a 1.5" 16 spline and uses 1/4" wall tube.

I rebuilt this shaft to have as a spare.   This time I used Spicer 1310 non greasable u-joints.
I could see obvious break points at the grease fittings on the joints that blew apart.

I know it will hold up to a lot of abuse, however I wont trust this shaft for crazy heavy use as I have learned...

USA Standard shafts are made by Yukon - same materials, process, plant, drawings, etc. The U-Joint area specs aren't met. Meaning they won't hold a CTM or other aftermarket joint, so they are downgraded to USA Standard. As long as you are fine with running Spicer joints, this will never be an issue. They are still strong and etc.

Pulled the 14B cover to check for water.   All oil.
Noticed the bottom of the axle was getting thin.   In fact the bottom most bolt for the cover was ground off.
I added some 1/4" plate.    Not bad for upside down welding.
Should be good for a few more seasons.

Bushings suck.   I thought they would absorb the vibes as not to feel it in the chassis.   But they cant take the load.

Bushing do not last in a buggy. No lube or anti twist will help. Smashing the axle back and forth destroys them. I am anti-bushing in anything that sees moderate off road use.

Damaged brake line below  :o

For what ever reason I had a spare.  http://www.summitracing.com/parts/fra-311040/overview/   :)

During our high speed runs the brake line got pinched between the upper link and the chassis.   That means I bottomed out the shocks and the bumps   Time to increase the charge on both.    Also need to clearance 1/2" on the chassis to allow space for the hoses and brake line.

New 1.25" Heims swapped in to replace the bushings.   Wow! what a difference they make.   Buggy feels tight again.   No more clunk and no axle roll when I stomp the brakes.

I did have to rework the mounting tabs because the mount was too shallow for the Heim and I stepped up to a 5/8 bolt.

no, but a 14 bolt pinion with the gear cut off is a light pres inside 2" x 120 wall dom- fine for a protected shaft- like on 571

572 rear mid shaft is 2" DOM with 1.75x250 wall dom pressed insided

this is a D60 pinion I machined to fit my pillow block bearing.  This will allow me to use a 1350 yoke.    i figure this is the weakest point in my driveline now.

solid stainless pillow block with steel bearing.  yes 1.25"

Im more worried about the pinion. I wonder if i weakened it with the machine work.  But i figure its the same as whats in the axle...

i was wondering the same.  my band saw just sits and pollishes a pinion if you try to cut it.  have to use a cut off wheel.  you must have used some carbide serous tools on a lathe to cut the case harness off

for no reason other than easy removal because the CV bolts are so annoying to get to right?

no, CV bolts are easy to get to

My Tcase is on poly mounts so it "could" move and i wanted a bit of slip

i dont want the Pillow block bearing or the Tcase to absorb the movement

Found out why the air compressor locked up.   One of the connecting rod bearing bolts fell out.

No other damage found.    Ordered a new gasket kit.

Planned upgrades for this pig:

1) PSC Power Steering Pump -  1500 PSI / High Flow

factory pump is dying/dead     cant find a good source for the P185 pump
figured its time to step it up

http://www.polyperformance.com/PSC-80-Up-Dodge-GM-Hi-Performance-P-Pump-w-o-Remote-Feed-Can

2) Stewart Stage 1 High Flow water pump and High Flow 180 thermostat

Looking for better cooling on full throttle assaults.
may also incorporate electronic thermostat to engage high speed cooling fan

http://stewartcomponents.com/index.php

Flow in GPM (Gallons Per Minute)
RPM    Competitors Pump    Stewart Stage 1
1000    17                              18
1500    25                              32
2000    34                              42
2500    42                              55
3000    51                              65
3500    59                              77
4000    68                              90
4500    76                            101
5000    85                            112
5500    93                            122
6000    102                            132
6500    110                            138
7000    119                            148
7500    127                            157
8000    139                         158

3) New 1-1/8" bore, brake master cylinder for more volume.  ( less pedal travel )    was 1" bore

also adding mechanical stop to brake pedal to stop pedal stroke before bottoming out master cylinder bore.

i have found that in a panic stop situation the brake booster allows for enough force to bottom out the master cylinder.

4) heat shield to block heat soaking from coolant fan blowing on the fuel cell.

only a small part of the cell is exposed to the fan,   however i have noticed a pressurized fuel cell spitting gas out the vent tube.

All parts sitting on the work bench.

Sounds good.

Question about brake system volume?
Can you achieve more volume to the calipers by increasing brake line diameter?
Or swapping in 1/2 ton calipers on the 60?

brake line diameter doesn't mean anything.  some claim excessive flex line or low quality rubber line eats up volume because of bulge.

smaller diameter pistions on the calipers would be more travel but less force.  i changed to 1/2 on the 60 front and dont see a difference.  i do notice my rear brake pads are wearing 4X as fast as front.

What is more efficient in a hydralic brake system?
Velocity or volume?

Smaller lines should flow less volume but more line pressure?
And vice Versa?
Just curious.
Need to address 2 pumps necessary on buggy system.

forget about efficient and velocity.  a braking system is basically a static system in our use.  yes there are things like heat and cavitation but ignore that for now....

pressure is Force / area is all you need to know.  with a MC, you have stroke and bore.  we run E350 MC that have 1 3/8" bore and about 1/2" longer stroke than the corvette MC.  your brake pressure is determined by petal force / bore area... your stroke x bore area is your volume you can push at that pressure to your calipers.   There are many "areas" you can adjust to change any of these things.   bore, stroke, petal geometry, caliper sizes, booster or non booster, ect.

Hose diameter does not effect any of these things (negligible).  a 3/16 dia brake line has more than enough volume to work on any of our systems with out causing restrictions that would slow up "petal feel" or create excessive heat.

2 pumps? are you talking fuel now?

If you have to pump the pedal you have pads backing off for some reason (warped rotor, loose wheel bearing, sloppy slides) or trapped air.

buggy 100%

I was lazy and did not return the PSC power steering pump.    So i installed it.
Steering is back to 100%,   maybe even a little better...
I did take it apart first to inspect it.  It is a new pump, not reman.  It looks to be built for PSC based on the stamping i saw on it.
It has the pressure and flow maxed out to the P132 pumps upper limits.   1500 PSI and 4-5 GPM

I will confirm this with my testing equipment once i get it set up.

This will be a good test for my buggy because I can buy a new P132 pump (standard automotive) and modify it myself to get the same results.
At a cost of $42...   not $166 form PSC.

cooling system worked great.

almost too good,  system was running so cool i think it was bumping back into open loop mode.
Needs a little fine tuning on the fan controller.

Steering was perfect.
Brakes were great.

I did notice that my alternator was only putting out 13vdc

i checked the amperage draw on the alternator with fans on high and lights on.   74 amps !

Stock alternator is 105 amps

Ordered a new 220amp alternator.
Title: Re: Gif Built Buggy

High output alternator fail.

This one is sold by Powermaxusa.
Specs: CS130 220 amp @ 1200 RPM
They use an overdrive pulley to do that.

i installed this alternator and tested it for amps, volts, heat.

Results:

 Idle @ 675 RPM:  105A  /  14.5V  / 238 F case temp
        @ 1500 RPM: 217A  /  13.8V /  252 F case temp

This alternator runs extremely HOT!

Next, I started recording CAN data and let the engine come up to temp and heat soak everything.

I found many voltage drop outs.

So, back in the box it goes to be returned.

I dont know the root cause of the issue and i really dont care.   I just know that the alternator would stop charging for no other reason than maybe it was over heated.

Here is a zoomed in view of the data for one of the drop outs.

Alternator update.

This is a CS130  140 amp   By POWERMASTER sold by Summit

I did the same testing and found no drop outs.
This one is a keeper.

Upgraded my charging wire to 4 awg.

nice.

I gotta do the same - but need to consider chassis side mount changes and clearance to front skid and exhaust at the same time.

Goal: remove all the crappy ballistic joints and stop bending the lowers.

All new 7075 T6 aluminum links installed.   2.375" lowers / 2.0 " uppers.
that was a lot of work...      but was half the cost of buying them made to order.
thanks to smikes lathe!

The ruff stuff joints are holding up great on our buggy. Picked up some squeaking after a year but I haven't tried spraying them with any sort of dry lubricant either.

New links took a beating.   Lots of gouging.  But still straight!

Passenger seat belt latch kept getting jammed.   I think it gets dirt and small rocks in it.   Need to replace with better restraints.

buggy was perfect this trip
