well looks like this 26 year old east coast beater has a bit more brake issues that first thought...

awaiting the laundry list of needed parts after its went through a throughout inspection this morning..

Plans are still a keeper… with body work and paint eventually…

First want to get it mechanically perfect, and locate all interior parts..

Smike.. wanna try your hand at body work.. I’m stopping by custom truck this week in the MJ to see about a paint quote…
For what’s it’s worth I would rather you do the body work.. his guy it a bit of a perfectionist and well.. it’s a 26 yr old truck.. I don’t need perfection.. just good.

Wheels came in today also…
Getting them sent out to get refinished…

smike.. how hard would it be to remove the bed?

I have some ideas brewing....

but I want to hear your honest assessment of the vehicle condition first...
Title: Re: 1986 MJ "the keeper"
Post by: M4wdFab on September 25, 2012, 01:08:01 PM
it was a shame, the one i pulled the motor out of was the best condition of all three.  should have moved a title trans and front axle to that one.

Also, im not sure the new springs lifted it at all, it may have lowered it.  The old springs like like soft ride dual rate 2", with 2" blocks.  new springs are 3"?

starter motor likes to stick on

lots of rust and dings on just about every pannel, its a jeep meh?

the lift, shocks and arms are in.  Didnt get to the PITA brake line that blew.

it was a shame, the one i pulled the motor out of was the best condition of all three.  should have moved a title trans and front axle to that one.

Emotional attachment to this truck….  Before the floor repair I had very little in that truck…

Also, im not sure the new springs lifted it at all, it may have lowered it.  The old springs like like soft ride dual rate 2", with 2" blocks.  new springs are 3"?

the old springs were Moog cargo coils I threw in there bc the old stock springs were just shot...
can always add a spacer if need be.. I have the new tires mounted.. prob mock one up later this week..
was never really looking for height.. just a more aggressive stance..

starter motor likes to stick on

ehh... youre talking to me remember..  Brake booster and MC will also need to get swapped out..

lots of rust and dings on just about every pannel, its a jeep meh?

need a new front fender for certain.. but agreed...

the lift, shocks and arms are in.  Didnt get to the PITA brake line that blew.

Thanks.. ill try and swing the tires over just to get them on and get the old ones out...
Ill check later this week on rear spring status...

I don’t know if I posted this ever anywhere... but here is the brief history of my MJ..

1986 2.5L TBI
4 speed
4wd
Long Bed.

Bought it for $287 on Shelter Island about 8 years ago.. (this is when I was in my saving for a engagement ring phase..)
wasn’t running due to a Fuel pump..
had AAA tow it for free >100 Miles to my now wife’s college house in Uniondale NY..
Had AAA tow it again for free >100 Miles to my house in Woodbridge CT

bought a FP, got it running.. emptied it out and found a Jaguar hood ornament.. sold on eBay for $250
rebuilt motor receipt with only ~20K on it..

used this MJ as a beater and gave it to my dad a few years ago when I moved up to Rochester..
the floor were beat from being on an Island .. had a local shop (CT) cut them out and that’s where the project died..
My dad went and bought another MJ and this one sat in the backyard for a little over a year..

this MJ has been like the giving tree..

it’s the only vehicle I own that I don’t have a dime into in the long run..

it was the dumpster when my parents remodeled, my delivery & pickup truck when I owned my first business, it taught my wife how to drive stick, and I have zero repair dollars into it..
(well minus the floor.. but that’s neither here or there)

the short list before I body and paint.. just to stay organized...

M4 work
extended front sway bar links
coil spring isolators and perhaps spacers (additional max 1.25)
possibly swap out front springs for HC ones.. Rancho springs might be too tight
Ford 8.8 in rear
flange adapter and balance driveshaft

Scotty's
New motor and trans mounts
New Coolant hoses
95-98 ZJ prop valve @ MC
new hard lines and front flex lines
02 sensor

tried to shim door hinge and door blew too far open...
needless to say the driver side front fender for certain new needs to be replaced before paint...  Might have a body shop look at door alignment...

looks sweet...

4.10s will be some get up and go on this guy.
will need to regear the front... M4 style will be fine for the amount the truck will go into 4wd.

have you ever swapped hinges on an XJ/MJ?

Im debating doing that next or just have the body guy do it with the paintwork...

Title: Re: 1986 MJ "the keeper"
Post by: rejeep on January 07, 2013, 09:14:55 AM
wheel spacers as well..
front are sandwich, rears are bolt on...

I ordered some new front hinges and a fender.... maybe take a peek and see if they are the bolt on or weld in...
I think thats it for this guy... Scottys has to do some coolant hose work.. didnt want to bother you with a drain and fill, not worth the hassle IMO..

fronts need longer studs

Title: Re: 1986 MJ "the keeper"
Post by: rejeep on January 08, 2013, 07:56:56 AM
aside from being mathematically perfect I have a bit of rubbing when at full lock... perhaps the isolators fixed that?? I know the .375" spacers might not have cured it... but???
Title: Re: 1986 MJ "the keeper"
Post by: M4wdFab on January 08, 2013, 08:34:49 AM
the rubbing is the inner side wall of the tires on the lower links.

you would need a lot less backspace to get away from that, or i could make the stops longer
Title: Re: 1986 MJ "the keeper"
Post by: rejeep on January 08, 2013, 08:36:48 AM

Title: Re: 1986 MJ "the keeper"
Post by: M4wdFab on January 08, 2013, 08:44:38 AM
carier break is 3.73, so if it is numerically less than 3.73 you will need a carrier and install kit

or get a used 4.10 axle
Title: Re: 1986 MJ "the keeper"
Post by: KingtheZJ on January 08, 2013, 09:07:12 AM
i assume this hog has 3.55s now?

i have a 3.73+ carrier if needed. in my "D30 Fix" box. no use to me now  :D

been looking... but for the amount of time its in 4wd i figued the re gear would be faster and cheaper...

I sunk tons of parts into that front end recently.. ball joints, u joinds, hubs, brakes etc...

I already have a Timken Master kit... just would need carrier and gears...

dunno.. still looking for an easy swap option as well..
Title: Re: 1986 MJ "the keeper"
Post by: M4wdFab on January 08, 2013, 11:41:14 AM
i just ment used axle to pull the gear set out of, not swap the axle...

much easier to tweak a pattern in a different housing than start from fresh with all new parts.

Also, if you want new studs pressed in for the spacers, we should do that at the same time.

gear set shouldnt be a problem- have the shim kit for it?  i think my Dana30 stuff is beyond gone.

whats the door hinge problem?  they usually suck and snap off
Title: Re: 1986 MJ "the keeper"
Post by: rejeep on March 18, 2013, 01:13:10 PM
I have a timken rebuild kit i keep on the shelf in my garage.. should have everything..
wont the shims be reused from the old one?

I got a set of NOS door hinges.. they are sagging and I dont get a good seal...
caused me to tweak the front fender.. that I also have a new one for..
Title: Re: 1986 MJ "the keeper"
Post by: M4wdFab on March 18, 2013, 01:19:17 PM
need a few shims to do it 95% of a 1000$ gear install in 15 minutes once tore down, or i can throw it in as is and it will be noisy and most likely fail pinion bearings down the road.
Title: Re: 1986 MJ "the keeper"
Post by: rejeep on March 18, 2013, 01:22:34 PM
you know more than me... gears scare me..

it is in a truck that will only see 4wd if it gets stuck or I need to drive a pickup in the winter...
Title: Re: 1986 MJ "the keeper"
Post by: M4wdFab on March 18, 2013, 01:25:31 PM
if you have the install kit throw it in- i will only use a few shims from it if needed and send it back.  i might have what i need.  i have been tearing down scrap axles and just keeping the parts on the shelf since Bill and I always need them it seems.

October 7th I’m scheduled for paint..

Need M4 to get bumpers and header panel off before…. (header panel due to fragility of studs)
I wanted to get the underside of the truck checked structurally (bumper mounts and uniframe) the spare tire winch removed and possibly a coat of Chassis/undercoat..

Ill prob have some other misc stripping to do afterwards as well… bead liner, mirrors etc..

trying to find stock..
Title: Re: 1986 MJ "the keeper"
Post by: M4wdFab on January 27, 2014, 05:38:29 PM
rear bumper got installed.

Front bumber plates mounted to frame.  When you slide on the bumper to bolt up to plates, it hits OE finders with about -2" that would need to be cut off.  No real way this can be screwed up.  Plates are directional side to side and right side in.  One bolts to the steering box holes.

Fender flares are pretty wide and dont really match the truck.  Like i said we should look at it before we start hacking metal out to make them fit.
Title: Re: 1986 MJ "the keeper"
Post by: rejeep on January 27, 2014, 05:44:08 PM
I got a set of clean stock ones coming....
I trust when you say a lot of metal..  I thought I would be able to get away with it... But I'm not running 35"s

Front bumper is a head scratcher...
Bottom of fender is flush with header panel...  Bumper should rest right bellow..

Same bumper as the XJ...

The manche you posted from RC looks to have a similar bumper... bottom of fender mounts flush with the header panel..

flares deff @ south...
1 set of rears.. 2 sets of fronts..
does the bumper need to be trimmed or the fender?
Title: Re: 1986 MJ "the keeper"
Post by: M4wdFab on February 21, 2014, 02:31:44 PM
oops missed that, ill grab them today then.

One or the other needs to be trimmed :)

id rather see the flares on, and then trim the bumper to fit the truck as that is removable.
Title: Re: 1986 MJ "the keeper"
Post by: rejeep on February 21, 2014, 02:48:14 PM
got it..

bumper looks good... wouldn’t want to ruin it :)  sheet metal is repairable...
XJ looked great as it was mounted... I forgot the PO had an ARB bumper on there.. fenders must have been trimmed...

stock XJ/MJ front end have the flares extending bellow the bumper turning into an air damn that runs the length of the bumper.
Don’t need all the crap…

Almost time for you to buy a enclosed trailer to avoid the awesome salt bath on the fresh painted jeeps

That would require me to get a truck that could tow it, and I don't tow enough to warrant..

I'll be driving this truck year round... Salt is enevidable.

A small aluminum enclosed wouldn't be to bad to tow

Expertly done..
The rear bumper is real nice how it protects the rear corner from bellow..
Stock flares were the way to go.. not on big enough tires to justify all the trimming that would have been needed.

Working on refinishing some of the plastic right now before it goes on the truck..
Would like to be driving it this time next week to hopefully be picking up some cleaned up CJ sheet metal.

Need the truck as well to drop off tub for spary..

for this truck...

would I measure for a driveshaft with a load in the bed or at 90% normal empty?

Driveshaft companies will want a measurement of center of u-joints, at rest, normal ride height.

TO DO:

Attacking vacuum lines this week on this beast...
rough idle is starting to get to me..

amazing how dry and cracked the 30 year old rubber is..

Vibration at speed I am willing to attribute to the rear driveshaft..
unsure if there is a good way to check this..
if I recall.. when the 8.8 went in the DS was either too short or too long..  measuring tonight

Interior needs to be done..  Too many family members are borrowing and I like having lendable vehicles..

bed tie down...  need to figure something out..  not having these made the bellow happen

dent in box..  yeah after fresh paint a rouge ratchet strap had it out for the bed side..

my "never needs anything" truck needs something...

amazing how many stalls I had today while driving in the city.
had to ride the clutch in first to get it underway.. and even with that I stalled more times than my wife learning how to drive stick..

hard starts (long cranks) were the result..

parked at office awaiting some interweb diagnostic...

could it be the clutch is just shot?  of course with the renix, for all I know its a ground issue somewhere.

Happened 1-2 times on way down...
Got progressively worse drive through city...

Comanche board hints fuel issues...

thought last night while in bed is I'm out of gas....

ran ok with weight in the bed... once the weight was out, started stalling on acceleration.. (tank slosh)

ran ok on hwy.. (no tank slosh)

going to limp it down Main Street to fill up

no functional fuel gauge? ??? ;D
Title: Re: 1986 MJ "the keeper"
Post by: rejeep on September 07, 2016, 10:09:30 AM
Perfectly functional....    Either arm was bent on install or sock broke loose and I'm missing the bottom 1/4-1/2 of fuel.  Put 21 gal in.  Runs perfect.  25 gal tank I think...

Daily status this week has prompted me to finally address driveline vibration issue..

Spoke with Vic today and will be taking some preliminary angle and length measurements for a new rear driveshaft...

Laundry list of "others"

need NYS inspection
no heat, but engine running fine
