Title: Mikemike’s shanty
Post by: mr.mindless on March 11, 2025, 06:27:22 PM
I never made a thread for the truck camper. Did a project thread amount of crap to it today on top of last year’s outfitting. I’ll have to work backwards sometime but today it got a generator oil change, propane tanks filled, jack control override wired, the first toolbox light, and a basement fan upgrade so that it can run with alternate heat sources instead of only running when the furnace runs. I installed a temperature controller that’ll turn the fan on when the basement gets down to 40 and off at 50.

In the immediate term that means I can run an electric space heater on shore power. Also means I can install a diesel heater.

Still needs solar and better batteries. I learned last fall at hallowheeling that the batteries are barely enough to run the furnace all night. I might bring a jump pack just in case, and gamble?

IIRC It is a 2007 arctic fox 1140 dry bath with a fridge/dinette slide opposite the kitchen and bath.

The cart to put it in the shop is the frame from my popup. Made it back and forth to the house for extra guest rooms at thanksgiving!

Thanks! I was probably just into pa when you sent that though.
If I’m not mistaken I’ll need new chargers for lithium batteries for slightly higher voltage to get max capacity, right? Normal lead acid voltage is 80-85% of full iirc?

Inverters and batteries and charge controllers and solar panels, oh my!

Yes, lithium needs specific charger. Mine are AGM.

Bathroom skylight has a decent leak driving through heavy rain. Either the front skylight or the air conditioner have a tiny leak.

Gotta figure out the Ram running problem…

Then I’ll plan to be all over!
Title: Re: Mikemike’s shanty

First day working on stuff at all after being sick. Didn’t feel up for the detail and annoyance on the Ram, so I worked on bigger simpler battery stuff on the camper.

Got the old batteries and box out. Looked at layout options in the cabinet under the sink.

Should be able to get the two 150ah batteries I got (with room for a third) along with solar, 12v, 120v chargers and new diesel heater into the space surrounding that battery box, under the kitchen counter/silverware drawers, between the oven and hot water heater . Inverter may sneak in there too if it fits with adequate clearance to heater exhaust. Need to make a dead panel under those drawers into a door and figure out exactly where I put the diesel heater duct output. Hopefully that’s not too loud, I need to run test my mount before I commit to possible resonance with the oven and a very short outlet duct.

Figured out a plan for including the big inverter I have on hand (3kw running 6kw peak claimed, low end unit hanging out from early days of Joe) without making a loop between 120->12 and 12->120, while still having the generator charge the battery when run. The vicron multiplus line marries a charger and inverter into one unit and avoids this issue - and also costs about a grand. I’m using an 8 pole 30a rotary switch instead. Off grid, I’ll select inverter as opposed to shore power, which will disconnect the 120v charger’s supply. Inversely, on shore power, inverter output will be unhooked from the camper so theres no backfeed. Should be mildly annoying to wire up and then - I believe - foolproof?

Called it a night while looking at existing wiring and seeing a mystery of where the main battery cables go. 2/0 or so + & - go from the batteries down next to the fresh and gray tanks in the basement under the kitchen. No idea what they go to down there. I can feel a mounting point and they go back from there. Smaller cables go to the battery disconnect and a couple auto reset breakers that I’d like to identify. The factory charger had its own dedicated cables from it direct to the batteries. I also need to see where truck 12v feeds to and reroute that to my 12-12 charger. I hope I can turn that charger down to ~10a as to not tax trailer wiring until I run a dedicated 6awg wire for truck charging. Hopefully do that along with hunting for fuel gauge shorts and wiring harness issues sometime soon. I dont think ill have all done before fingerlakes national forest cleanup. Camper maybe but definitely not both, and probably not solar within the week yet either. 2x200w panels are going on with easy addition of 2 more.

Only picture I took was getting the lead-acid battery box out after I got the battery box door off.

the space between the interior floor and the bed of the truck. that's where all the tanks are, and on these 4 season units there's a bunch of insulation on all sides of that and an air gap through which some interior air intentionally circulates to keep it all thawed out.

it's 12-16" between the interior floor and the flatbed deck.

24hr turnaround I got electrical drawing back after emailing Northwoods, the manufacturer. Cool!

The big cable that runs down and back goes to the generator, apparently. I didn’t expect that size but I guess starters do draw pretty hard and it’s probably almost 20 feet as the wire runs

Diesel heater 85% installed. Broke a fuel filter, so didn’t quite get to wrap it up. Insulated the existing battery door and will probably semi-permanently seal it once work is complete. It used to intentionally ventilate the lead-acid battery compartment , now it’s wide open access under the kitchen counter. New doors are well north of a hundred bucks, I’ll make up my mind on that later.

Just about buttoned up on stage 1 of the power upgrades last night on the late shift. Stage 2 will be getting solar panels up on the roof and re-sealing anything else up

Batteries and chargers are all in and mounted and wiring should just need terminals snugged up and wiring harnesses re-tied up. Diesel heater needs its controller harness extended a foot or 2 and one more hole drilled to run it through from under the counter.

Waiting on some Dicor to set up after putting the battery door back on. I might have to pull one battery out to get the diesel heater exhaust assembled, so that put a pause on.
I might actually make it out this weekend, if I'm not clinically dead after lack of rest after today.
- hook up heater exhaust
- extend heater control harness and plug in
- snug up all wiring terminals, secure harnesses, reinstall fuse box
- clean up construction mess
- fill water tank
- get it on the truck

Stage 1.5 is a thorough washing, roof to bottom. Planning dish soap on the roof, and if the walls don't come clean that way I have a Reliable Products Spray Cleaner (came with the house!) that just wipes off the black spots and streaks with zero effort.
Stage 2 is installing solar panels on the clean roof and getting them wired and resealing anything that looks leaky, which is the edges of most things on the roof as well as the kitchen vent. Might split that up into 2 stages since I have wiring for 1 string run from the factory, and the other string I'll need to run wires up for, going to use the TV antenna hole for that.
Stage 3 is installing and wiring my inverter if it passes a running test.
Stage 4 is running 4ga wire to the truck battery with Anderson connectors, and I can crank the DC-DC charger to 40 or 50 amps depending, and with that I could think about deleting the generator.

Almost ready for interior reassembly.

I took apart the back side of the cabinet above the sink for running a couple wires.

Got the inverter in and fully wired. Seems to run the aircon and claimed 7 hours run time. Need to be careful about fridge - it draws 30 amps off the batteries running on ac.

I gave myself a pretty complex problem and successfully solved it. I added a manual transfer switch ahead of the automatic transfer switch (which gives generator priority over shore power) so I can select shore or inverter source, and added an outlet that is selected between generator or shore but never inverter.

Didn’t get the roof washed today, might just spot clean it to work on solar panel wiring and panels while it rains. Running the wiring from the roof to the breakers is the last thing needed before buttoning up the interior.

so where I left this sitting after sickness and Ram failure was with a couple small open roof penetrations, and a need to run wiring back from those roof penetrations to the solar charge controller.

Need to punch a few feet through roof foamcore if I can to cross the ceiling directly, then spot clean a couple places and glue down the glands. Once that's sealed up, get the camper outside, wash the roof really well, then install the panels. They're semiflexible and will get a couple screws around the edges and butyl tape underneath. Make up a couple solar plugs, triple check polarity, and should be wrapped up??

Seems like a couple days' work if I remember right exactly where I left off.
I want to get jack extensions made up for ease of gooseneck on/off too, and there might be a couple other lil things

So far this week, got the interior put back together but not cleaned up and have 2 of the 4 panels final mounted on the roof.
Ended up unable to go through the foamcore, there's support structure in the way somewhere around the skylight that I could not get over or under, so the TV antenna hole got sealed up and foamed, and the wiring has to run across the exterior.

Tonight I'll reseal the roof to front cap joint that I cleaned out last thing yesterday and get the last 2 panels mounted, and wiring final run.

Should have a test run at Erik's party saturday into sunday.

I did have it outside with all panels on the roof and I was able to top out 50 amp charge capacity with clear midday sun. not sure how much I'm giving up, but I bet 20+ amps. I could easily add another charge controller to split the 2 strings, and have enough overhead in voltage to add a third panel to either string for more capacity. I wouldn't need to change anything to add one more, to add 2 more I'd need to remove the luggage rack and replace part of it with a handhold to be able to get up the factory ladder. If I did that, I could probably hold up the AC with solar alone in bright sun - it draws 80a through the inverter. No sun, it would run for something around 4 hours on batteries. Only have tested that for about 40 minutes but everything stayed cool and happy. The hottest running component I have is the 30 amp 120vac battery charger. It'll keep it warm in the cabinet for sure when bulk charging for better or worse.

After a couple cycles the batteries’ BMS all roughly agree and agree with the battery monitor. 29-31% according to the batteries and 27% by the shunt.

Leaving the camper
Up and out and running, curious to see where battery charge will end up. I parked in partial shade in the house driveway.

I need to check my 12-12 charger, it doesn’t see power from the truck now so no charging from the trailer wiring circuit presently.
That and a pissed off fridge were the only issues at all. The fridge door wasn’t shut all the way when I first started cooking it down and I think something froze up. The freezer was fine but the fridge took another 20-30 hours to cool off after I closed the door. It’s good again now.

Couple pictures of the outfitting

The jumpers aren’t on but fur blocks are mounted and feed and load wires installed.

I don’t currently have a battery disconnect. I probably should add one, the easy place will be between the shunt and the grounds. Will need to do minimum 200a continuous, I’ve seen 125 drawn from inverter loads.

Couldn’t get through the core of the roof to use the tv antenna hole for a gland so they went next to each other above the kitchen. The dirty one here was the am/fm aerial.

Not sure on wheeling yet. But getting this much “done” sure feels good.

Still want to extend the jacks for fender clearance and clean off the bottom (bumper, sewer pipe, gen exhaust) for gooseneck use so I don’t have to have it up on 6x6s.

Looked at the 12v-12v charger today. Must have had a loose plug that it wasn’t working at all but the wiring to the back of the truck is CRAP. It’s only 12.x nominal with the truck running and the cigarette lighter showing 14.1. It is down to 9.x with a 1 amp load.

Didn’t check if the drop was hot or neutral, but it’s no wonder charging from the truck isn’t worth much on anything and didn’twork at all through an actual charger.

So in addition to 4awg leads I should probably check out the trailer wiring again too. I last did plugs probably 10 years ago and never re ran anything from the front of the truck.

If you have the power budget to support it, the old full-size hardware is only $175 new now.

That’s what I did, I didn’t get the Mini

Hopefully it plays nice with the inverter, not sure how much draw would change between the inverter and doing a 12-48v step up dc power supply. Iirc that’s what it needs.

Jokinen’s have one and it’s pretty great. I think Harry has still only been threatening but I don’t remember for sure.

There are a bunch of options like this all over Amazon and eBay. They look like cheap junk but I'm sure it would be fine? We're still only threatening but probably will at some point. I think they're rated to consume 50-100w, readout on Andy's app said about 60w so pretty low energy consumption. I'm guessing consumption would be less with this adapter rather than inverter to go DC to AC back to DC but I doubt it's a big difference either way.

Charging at 50 amps from the truck via 4 awg and Anderson connectors.
Batteries have a disconnect now.
Generator exhaust is turned to clear the bed and reinstalled in case it’s needed.
Starlink seems to work perfectly through the skylight, so it’s mounted in there.
Toolbox that came with the truck isn’t a perfect fit but it’s on and usable on the passenger side.
Good test on diesel heater.

Monitoring power today with starlink running, drawing about 10 amps. Will plug in and get the fridge running tonight.

Solar held up Starlink. I’m facing north and in relatively heavy shading but that’s pretty hefty draw all things considered.

55% at 9pm when I turned it on.
41% this morning 8am
53% right now.
1.9kwh today from solar.

Zero systems issues so far. Went through 100% of water during humble pie with three showers, went out as we were packing: perfect.

0.9gal of diesel for heat. Furnace controller is insane with awful chingrish instructions.

Must be some damn good fishing to ground your boat at the dock daily

Haven’t seen high tide yet. Will be 15-20’ of water here. The shore is hundreds of yards out from this harbor. Tide was up several feet from minimum and the river was still flowing out.

Hows the new truck on this trip for ya?  Assuming you're using it.

It’s quieter than the 3500 and rides better too. I miss my manual. The aisin is always shifting.

Noted a little stutter leaving the line late yesterday. While cornering both times. Could be trans or limited slip. Didn’t notice it today (just townie running today. Trailhead, harbor, restaurant, back to same site)

Takes me seconds to level with my new scrap-built ramps, thrilled with them.

Boats were just setting down on the bottom 2 hours later as we finished lunch

Talked with one of the captains a bit. They dock here because it’s close to both home and their grounds (bay is zoned, permit only good within your zone). Third generation, younger than me. More than happy to shoot the shit for a bit. Prepping for their season that starts 10/14 through dec/jan.

Hopewell Rocks were epic. Visited at low tide on our way to Halifax and hiked around for a couple hours

Here’s a time lapse of the tide there

Dunno how I screwed up the link. This should be it.

Ferry to PEI today. Only had time to drive through Halifax after sunrise breakfast at the beach and then a trip south to Peggy’s Cove. Bigger city than I expected. Would like to spend a bit of time in it.

Have a tiny water leak that has the pump kick maybe hourly. Don’t know where.

Renogy battery shunt gets stuck this way once in a while and I have to reset it. Has to be something with the dc-dc charger.

The controller for the diesel heater won’t cycle it on-off. Just high low, and it’s got to be under about 45F for that to be ok. Maybe cooler. So I’ll need to figure out a solution for that. Not using propane for heat I can run for probably 2 weeks on my 2x30lb bottles for only stove and fridge.

Haven’t had to think about power other than keeping an eye on it. Have had water run out of get full when not paying attention. 3-4 days is where we need to actually mind it

I thought 1.5x/L for diesel was bad, but in QC it’s $1.70!
Only bad part of the trip. Putting in enough to get is to Massena. At least the exchange rate is pretty favorable right now.

Slide spit a roller out from somewhere on the last leg home. Tanks dumped and ready for clean out tomorrow.

Fridge has been getting warm while under way. Need to see what options are to better protect the game from blowing out.

With my truck charging I can run on electric while under way but that’ll always be a 100% manual switch, I think.

I tried shielding the flame on my stock fridge a bunch of different ways unsuccessfully.  The electric was completely useless.  It was also as old as I am ;D.

mine is a 2-way, no 12v option.

120 draws I think about 25amps which sucks out loud but I'm charging at 50 amps while driving so it would do it, just might mean not getting back to 100%.

I don't really want to change out the fridge if I don't have to, but I have heard that standard residential fridges have _tiny_ draw by comparison, so if I could physically size one correctly that might be a way to go. I would want to see the numbers, since as is now I can go 3-4 days with little sun and zero run time and be in good shape.

Oh 120V, I don't associate 120V with camping haha.  25amps @ 120V is a lot.  Absorption fridges have to make heat to work I suppose?  I'm sure someone has figured out how to keep the flame going, there's a ton of those campers on the road.

must be a slide-in truck camper issue.. never had similar issues with my horse trailer campers or RV... hmm..
