I'm looking at some shop space I'll probably rent in the city. Only issue is it has a brand new concrete floor and owner says no drilling the floor. The compressor needs to be secured down but I figure I can just put it on a 3'x3' piece of plate and weld some bolts sticking up to secure it. The issue is I was pretty set on installing a 2 post lift.
Options would be something like this http://rochester.craigslist.org/for/4587143288.html but obviously no good for suspension work / tires / brakes.
So was playing with the idea of how to support a lift without drilling the floor. Would need structure supports top and bottom between the posts. and legs that extend front and back. thoughts?
-
you and a new floor that's not suppose to be damaged sounds like a bad idea
-
this place?
http://rochester.craigslist.org/prk/4648746112.html
whats the electric and heat situation? looks nice ceiling height for a lift.
-
My compressor is still on a pallett.
Not sure about a lift that's not attached to the floor.
Seems like I'd keep searching for a older floor.
-
seems like this would be what i need.
location sucks

-
I'd pass on location, shithole part of goodman
-
yes that one. Best price for size I've found so far. Location is fine with me.
He said he would run 220 to the garage for $425 per month. I have a buddy who is throwing in $150 a month. its 22 wide by 28 deep, so not really 2 deep in terms of being able to work on stuff.
roof slopes downward side to side. where left side is tall at ~14 and right side is ~10. which actually works ok since the left bay door is larger so is conducive to that being the main work area.
electric included. no heat. my salamander would heat the area fine.
-

in the HOOD.
but a consideration if its "drive up and drive in" kinda place. too far for you though.

That's in a commercial complex behind Charlotte appliance, not bad at all, cameras on the buildings ,might of been a skatepark in there at one time

x2 billionty
My horizontal compressor sits on a couple of 2x4s. It'll be fine.
-
You're right. Father north than I though.
-
Could build a steel platform with enough structure to support loading front/back and side/side...
-
Something to consider is the surrounding area.
If it's a residential area they won't be happy about an after hours fab / repair shop making noise. Business use or not!
don't sign anything more than a month to month lease.

seems like you could buy for that price instead of renting

is this the norm for "commercial" space? we actually have not discussed lease at all. I will ask owner what he expects.

This was my thought.
-
sounds like a hassel. i drilled holes and didnt ask haha
-
Typically for commercial space an owner is looking for yearly lease.
Seperate out the shitbirds!
But being marketed as "non commercial" space, noise after normal business hours could be an issue for surrounding homes. Don't get locked into a year lease with a property owner who doesn't under the full scope of what your planning to do.
And then shrugs his shoulders if the neighbors shut you down.
Without really knowing the neighborhood. .. im saying just bee cautious.

good thing to consider.
he said he was flexible with the lease. probably will just ask for month to month? what kind of risk does that impart on me for him being able to kick me out for a tenant who will pay more?
sounds like a hassel. i drilled holes and didnt ask haha
I should have gone with this route. ask for forgiveness, not permission.
-
Ha ha.
Yea good point.
hill Billy shenanigans won't get you anything but in the back of a patrol car.
-
In a lease agreement it should disclose how much notice you will receive if the property owner decides to terminate the lease for any reason.
30 days minimum is safe bet.
If not make sure it's rewritten in.
-
Notice recieved must be in writing delivered in person. Not emails or texts.

this is what I was thinking.
-
bottom ties suck
subtract 2K from chineese ratings
lead time would be un acceptable
much better options for 1200-1600 on ebay
-
just looking at design...would over engineer and retrofit to a used lift.
how do you feel about scissor lifts? Chadley uses one primarily. Even with the cummins trucks :o

how the hell are these so cheap??
-
get a top tie
junk on the floor is no good.
chinnese 9K is a good 7K lift
my max jax was 2300$ to my door
i would pay 3X that for the next lift without thinking twice after having a lift.
i would not buy something that can safely lift your cummins truck.

lease signed on the place on goodman. 3 month then month to month.
related: school me on running new fuel lines on a car. looks like there is nylon, aluminum and stainless options. how do I tie into existing system? does fuel line use the standard flare like a brake line?
-
High or low operating pressure? Usually cut off where it's good and double hose clamp fuel injection rated hose to the other end is my method for under 50psi

some vehicles have aftermarket units

Get nylon to steel compression fittings

great to hear shop is rented!
i have a lot of stuff i can send your way if you are looking for work.
a few recomendations:
charge 2x what you think is fair
you will get Fucked 1 out of every 10 jobs, accept it.
do not be afraid to say "no, we dont do that"
do not be afraid to outsource and make 40%
mark up 40% on any parts you get from arie / zone / advance
be clear cash only
fix your mistakes at all cost
60$ / hr for clean metal / fabrication / new lift kit installs
80-90$/hr for shit rotten jeep work
do not do work for anyone you work with
-
Yeah if you have customers who you are not quoting I would definitely be interested. Shop is on South Goodman in Rochester.
Please continue to remind me of the advice you listed above. I can see how each one of those is essential.
Whats the thing you use the most that I need to stock that I don't have and wont think of? I know I want to stock brake line, fuel line, random exhaust sizes.
-
Wait are you opening up a legit shop?
We need to talk
-
no not a legit shop. just a large 2 bay garage to work on my junk and pick up side jobs. no lift for now.

Looking for a decent sized tool box of anyone has anything for sale. 40"+ bottom with or without top box.
-
HF is what we ended up with in the shop for main boxs.
Good enough for the money.
The Depot puts boxes on clearance every so often as well.

-
i got the Husky boxes after shopping around. they have 100lb rated drawers that seemed a lot nicer than the HF boxes at same price, even cheaper if on sale.
Make sure if you get a store model you check all the bolts on wheels and anything assembled in house- wheels and handles fell off mine shortly after.
-
I have a Husky box and Snap on...
for the money. Husky is just dandy... I got my Snap on second hand and its WAY better in almost ever way.. but cant justify the cost of a vehicle for tool storage
-
The husky are really nice for the money. 41" 13 drawer top and bottom for $550. I'm looking at a used snap on box tonight that's $800, then will decide. Everyone wants 2500-5000 for used beat high end ones.
-
matt has that model husky- his only complaint the draw catches are weak and it comes unlocked. that is the black version
Mine is the limited edition silver with heavier drawers and catches- something do consider.
-
ok good to know. thanks
-
im getting tired of stuff that breaks
-
i left out matts complaints are when its in travel in the trailer- several times the top comes open and drawers open in the trailer while towing.
probably fine on a shop floor.
-
Ended up buying the older snap on for $750.
Definitely has some dings and dance, but construction is SOLID. She's a heavy girl
-
Good deal.
That's about what I paid for new HF 42" main box with 2- 17" side boxes.
Definetly not Snap on quality.

New better tire machine purchased. Come use anytime. Has a bigger bead breaker jaw. We can try a KRT again if you want.

nice work.
I think all of us are on beadlocks now so the mounting part is easy- it was the bead breaking that was crazy hard. Solved that with the M4 super max jax power bead breaker!
-
I've scrapped a lot of whole cars lately. Anyone know if there is regulations on that? Would it fall under the need for dealer license for "retail or wholesale"? I can't find anything online related to scrapping.

look under "dismantling"

https://dmv.ny.gov/more-info/junk-salvage-businesses
Meh. No talk of "if _ or more per year"
Will continue as is.
-
is the place taking the titles? or?
i know there is a buy / sell more than 6 per year something law.... but i dont think that maters if they arent ever titled
-
junk is junk
they take all the information for a paper trail.. stolen, liens, murder scene etc..
-
ya i cant imagine its any way actively linked to the DMV or IRS.
you working out in the shop this week? i have your hydro ram. might have some tires to swap
-
Stepping up my storage game. Should have done this long ago.
-
Nice!! ;D
-
Your shop fridge is entirely inadequate... :P
Nice improvement!
-
nice!

How much shop rent?
House is on Balsam St Rochester. Foreclosure that needs work then will be a rental in a few years. New garage.
Shop is $350/mo incl electric
-
I'm pretty sure I went to look at that house a few years ago when I was looking at houses...
congradts!
Balsam Bagels is a great place and the owner is a great guy
-
kim used to live right there. nice neighborhood.
-
Moving party! 8)

I can’t get over how useless the parking situation makes that place to me. Sucks since it’s so handy and so cheap but no trailers in the lot plus alternate side parking just kills it.
