i have been looking at some options. buy a real furnace new, buy a used one, make something meh
did some bench tests with some high pressure nozzle burners today. i think i need to step up my game if im going to do it.
-
i am thinking a double barrel style stove i can put a waste oil pot styled burner in and still be able to burn wood or cardboard shit from shop
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2hyr27W7Xzk
-
That’s pretty cool
Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
-
might be a futile attempt and not neat enough heat
have lots of oil, fans, and 55 gal drums so might be worth a try.
-
I did a double barrel stove like that and wasn't to happy with how looking it lasted. I think I got two or three years out of it. The metal is just to thin and doesn't last. I seen one guy take a 250 gallon heating oil tank and make a big furnace.
-
...The metal is just to thin and doesn't last.
That's what I was thinking
-
picked up a barrel kit and double barrel kit from TSC today, also stopped at lowes for some misc items.
plan is a double barrel kit with wood or waste oil option.
need to grab some sand / bricks tomorrow and ready for first burn / clean out, then start tweeking the waste oil forced air setup.
-
whats your oil pot look like and how are you feeding it air?
-
oil feed will be 1/4" copper line inside a 1.5 or 1.75" steel tube. the tube will have a shop vac blower hooked to it with a variable speed drive.
sizes for oil line and air line will mostly be driven by the junk i have laying around. will tweek later but basically you need to be able to throttle the oil and air to get a good burn. shooting for 1-1.5 gallon per hour burn should be more than enough to max out heat from the two drums with fans on them.
after that i might try a compressed air / mixer nozel setup but they look more of a pain to light/ control and you have to listen to your air compressor kicking on a lot.
-
pot will be literally an old trailer cooking pot or whatever the biggest thing i can fit though the barrel door.
-
it always amazed me how you think of something and it just happens...
-
You know of any backroad routes from mine to yours? I hear stories from those who go south that Scottsville and E River can both take an hour to get to I90 in a bad snowstorm. Sitting in traffic is totally not what an offrAudi is for. It's for sending me into the ditch when I get overconfident in my abilities while running around in a snowstorm because I don't have to care about road conditions!
-
i see zero traffic at 3:45 everyday. between 4:30 and 6pm every week day its back up past my house and down the road from the village signal
not really sure any other way haha
-
I'll may be running around a bit after work. someone misplaced her keys and isn't testing out the new snow tires just yet.
-
i started off with a shop vac, but its way to loud and if i fried the motor its a wasted $70 ,walmart has plug in mattress pump for $10, put it in a box surrounded by insulation with vents and its near silent with mass air flow
-
i was gona start with the small shop vac. i did read they really arent 100$ duty rated. if the end solution is noisy, i can just put it down stairs. i have a few marine inline blowers that are DC and much cheaper to control speed also. I might even have an extra air pumper from the brolite somewhere.
120v mattress pump might do it. i have only used the junk 12v ones
-
troy in your ventures what was the gal/hour you were burning about? didnt know you tried the air pump version
-
I had considered the marine blower, but hacked a computer psu and got the highest cfm computer fan they make, problem was trying to cram a 4" fan down a 1 1/4" pipe, there was too much back pressure and no matter if the fan was on low or high same amount of air traveled through, whereas a shopvac or mattress pump force air no matter the size of you air intake
-
squirrel cage blower from auto HVAC could be plumbed too if 12v is on the table, or a household furnace blower for 120v.
-
troy in your ventures what was the gal/hour you were burning about? didnt know you tried the air pump version
At full blast I think I was at 1gal per 2 hours
-
im shooting for 1-1.5gal per hour burn
-
burned a load of wood through this tonight, should be ready to vac out tomorrow cool and start working on waste pot
-
trying to pick up a bounce house blower today after work. high hopes!
-
bounce house blower is a monster! its HD
-
oil burning forge? ;D
-
oh boy
-
lots of fail tonight. cant get enough fuel to burn. need to research importance of pot size / shape ect.
-
pot size and shape isnt really important ,heat is, are you having problems just igniting or continued burn?
-
tarps in the car next time I come south.
-
had this thing ripping for about an hour pretty good with a new pot style. it appears the variable speed drive has killed my bounce house blower. sad face!
-
new 10$ amazon mattress blower installed and just cant get it to run right last night. not sure my problem bah
-
Are you allowing the oil to burn for a while to heat your bowl/pan up before you add air.once everything is hot enough, even if you run lean the bowl will continue to ignite the oil
-
if i pour like a 1/2 cup of diesel in it takes off and does what i want. cant get only oil to just maintain any kind of good burn the size im looking for.
time does not matter- will go from cherry orange pot to no flame. im using stainless.
im going to try a different air inlet tube thats smaller.
i know its just going to take some tweaking, i almost had it working fairly well sustained before the bounce house blower died.
-
what does your air and oil feed tubes look like, did you copy someones elses design?any doubt the oil has been mixed with other nonflammable liquids.
-
Add a feature that preheats the oil before it enters the combustion chamber? Lower viscosity and bring closer to ignition temp.
-
i was wondering if my oil is junk. so i dumped in straight new 20w-50 and same results.
i have a 2" air inlet with a curve going into a gallon size stainless steel pot mid side entry to promote swirl. 3/8 tube in side the 2" for oil.
will do more reading. i think i want to get away from the pot style and try a plate or tube burner setup.
need to just spend more time on it. cold sucks
-
Wonder if 2" is too big for mattress pump, mine was 1 1/4" with the 3/8" inside , I did have a problem with air blowing directly at the oil which I capped of the 1 1/4" with just a hole for the oil feed
-
Add a feature that preheats the oil before it enters the combustion chamber? Lower viscosity and bring closer to ignition temp.
that's the first place my head goes, too.
-
ran about 6 or 8 gallons though this thing. my oil was junk and full of sludge. ran some of the stuff nick dropped off and it fired right up.
ready for heat exchange tubes and upper fan to start reclaiming some real head out of this thing.
-
Nice!!
-
Last of my oil burning today, will take any if you have! Have empty 5 gall jugs too.
-
i have a small drum (35 gallon) that's almost full.
Pick up if you're this way or ill get it to you sometime.
-
I have 15 gallons for ya.
-
picked up some free oil off Facebook local. they loaded it into a tote fore me too haha
-
i think this is version 3.0 i now can pull down the stack temp and keep the lower barrel not orange.
it was 24 outside tonight when i shut down, and was 45 between my lift posts after 2hours run time.
still lots of room for improvement but i think there is some hope this might actually be not a waste of time and 200$

-
looks fun!
-
need more fire! hard to get a video its so bright when really ripping. the flame pot goes pretty rich when you open the stove door also in this case.
-
last night had this thing running as hot as possible with the hardware i have,
blower on full power, oil as fast as will drain though my current 3/8" feed line
it was 20 degrees outside, got the barn to 34 in 2 hours. still need more fire. thinking of moving to oil/air injection with a legit burner next.
-
Do you think more surface area would give more fire, for instance if your using a 8" diameter bowl a 12" bowl would burn more
-
i tried a larger cast iron pan and it didnt work very well, can get hot enough with sides only being 2" tall.
the current thin stainless steel wine bucket im useing seems to light super easy and really gets ripping. i just need like 3x of what it produces.
a tall oval bucket maybe with some internal fins is what im gona try next time.
-
solid 8 hr burn today no issues. got the upper blue tarp wall up too!
-
tarp wall really gave a massive improvement. almost tee shirt working weather!
another solid 8hr burn today- was up to 58 degrees at the lift post and 49 all the way at the tarp wall away from the stove.
thats awesome. 33 degrees out side. 25 degree for free im happy.
have about 20% of the roof more to insulate to go.
yes!
-
Sweet that the tarp made such a difference. I’d hoped It would but wasn’t betting strong on it
-
perfect size folded in half for a double thick door on bottom section. i didn't even cut it. used 3 other smaller tarps for the top part, and strung two winch cables tight between the truss ends. got some tarp end things with carbiners in hopes for a shower curtain style door, but got impatient with late amazon delivery so used beam clamps i had today.
-
15 pannels to go on the roof, another good 8hr burn today.
this is what was left after yesterday
-
ill have this thing fired up after work wednesday if anyone wants to stop over before club meeting!
have the last 30 pack of blue light to kill from aug shop party still!
all welcome!
-
sad day for whatever bird or other thing made it into my flew vent.
sorry i did not disassemble my stack, you got smoked and cooked.
-
man if this winter keeps holding at 25-30F i am super happy with this guy still.
found another spot im loosing a lof of heat at the peak on tool side end. need to cut a piece of insulation for that, i bet its going right up there over the furnace and out the big roof vent!
im thinking with about 2 more hours of work i could really seal it up a lot more to get past the 30 degrees over outside mark where i am now.
-
How’s the temp in shop this past weekend and tonight?
-
it was 5 degrees outside this morning when i headed to the barn. inside it was 17. i think the earth around the lower 3 sides of the foundation holds some heat. within an hour the shop was up to 45. 2 hours i was at 53 max temp. later tonight when the sun started going down i was back to 48 degrees when i shut it down. burned about 10 gallons today.
very happy.
i still have a lot of easy insulation work and parts i could seal up a lot better- thats the next step when i run out of jeep work.
-
still looking for a good pot solution. 2nd wine chiller tin has a hole in it already.
this might be fuck you level stainless. need to measure my barrel door to see if 10.75" will fit.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/304-SS-10-Sch-10-Butt-Weld-Pipe-End-Cap-Stainless-Steel-Fitting-Coyote-Gear/223747130585?_trkparms=aid%3D1110001%26algo%3DSPLICE.SIM%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20131231084308%26meid%3Dd288f9117aa84d47bf25a716f3a30068%26pid%3D100010%26rk%3D2%26rkt%3D2%26sd%3D333307210848%26itm%3D223747130585%26pmt%3D0%26noa%3D1%26pg%3D2047675&_trksid=p2047675.c100010.m2109
-
2nd amazon 18$ wine chiller bucket only lasted about 5 or 6 burns before failing.
dragged in a snowy sheet of stainless left from the kitchen hauler gut out that i have been saving for probably 6 years.
made my own pot. as big as i could to get though the door.
thing rips and really heats up nice.
-
o no! my go to air mattress pump is MIA of the intewebs. ill have to source a new one.
have plans to step up efficiency this winter, maybe add a second unit lol
-
picked up a big oil tank from the Jokenins woodshop land lord today. probably 30 gallons of fuel for free, and a good tank for storage or the next furnace!
-
knocked all the sot and ash out of this unit and shoveled it out. cut axis hole in heat exchanger too.
made some mods and cleaned how the oil source and blower is mounted. no more using the press and vice grips all winter lol
fired up and burned a bit, all good ready for winter.
-
nice!
-
wonder if you got better efficiency out of your exchanger if you had a fan setup like this guys https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RXY0JKU12jg
-
Squirrel cage blower is a good call, I dig the look of that fuel oil tank.
-
my exchanger is way over sized and needs to really be less efficient to not keep the flew temp so low.
-
thought it was good, but i think my flew is caked up and drastically reduced in size, so picking up materials to replace. even if its a once a year replacement, im not upset about it for free heat. I also kinda know now more fuel is not better and will try to run it cleaner.
-
flew was plugged by huge birds nest.
had about 3/8" thick of black soot entire pipe.
replaced with all new, added expanded steel at end cap to keep out bird.
burned about 5 gallons tonight, thing rips again great. 450degree flew temp when its cooking.
blue tarp going back up soon!
-
*flue
damn birbs! I have chimney brushes now, 6" round might be useful to you? As cheap as your single wall stove pipe is though, maybe meh to bother!
-
been burning a ton of oil last 2 weeks being home.
FB market place lots of free oil, by chance i pull in and same place i grabbed from last year - ha! another 100 gals or so in 5q jugs loaded into a tote. should be good for a while now.
need to build a settling tank with two valves so i can sort some bad oil, drain junk from bottom, pull good oil from 1/2 top.
also id love some kind of electric damper valve on my barn fan. i have a 2x6 block to stick in that locks it closed, but sucks if it start grinding rust or leaf blow out the shop and then need to get the scissor lift to open the damper. def needs a remote mechanical lever or an electric damper addition lol
-
need to build a settling tank with two valves so i can sort some bad oil, drain junk from bottom, pull good oil from 1/2 top.
Will a 55 gallon barrel work for you? I still have the barrel I built just for that. I was going to scrap it. You can have it for free.
Also have a pump/strainer with dispenser for transferring needs.
-
yes a barrel would work fine if its in good shape and doesn't leak. if its an open top barrel even better. I have a bunch of 5 gallon buckets with questionable stuff in them but if you solo cup off the top its fine.
-
still cranking shop was 60 tonight- with about 28 outside, ill take it.
new coleman air pump came in thats a little more CFM that i need to build an adaptor for. I can tell im losing a little heat through the exhaust fan even with the damper jammed shut with a 2x6.
-
o man. had an event today! i did something dumb. and she blew! blew shit all the way to my lathe across the shop. sounded about like a 12 gage where i was standing right next to it! blew stove door open, blew my clean out hatch in upper drum open, and blew the stack apart in two places like a banana. flame went out while i was adjusting stuff, i dumped in more kero, and stove must have filled with oil / kero vapor, and it blew when i turned air back on.
security camera footage is excellent.
haven't figured out how to get video off my security drive site though, so phone to monitor lol
https://youtu.be/4BFF9yU5QJw
-
i think the next stove will have a rear facing blow out door. maybe a few other things. i now i know not to do what i did. even though i have done that many times. hmm.
-
Did you have a blowout?
-
damn, you handled that well, not even a flench or a jump
-
Ah, I didn't see post above. Damn. Is this unit repairable?
-
ya, i had it back up and running in a half hour. turned on the shop exhaust fan and shoveled out some soot, decided to clean out the upper drum again and inspect since my inspection cover was blown off lol
couple zip screws and some new foil tape with the scissors lift, all good.
i am down to my last 5 gals of oil so need more!
-
whole problem was caused by the oil line was plugged/running slow and over flowing the funnel, so i was trying to clean it and unplug while the stove was hot. flooded the burn chamber with oil, should have let it cool down before re lighting. bah.
-
damn, you handled that well, not even a flench or a jump
THIS! Unfazed!
-
The s in smike is for steady
No flinch was the first thing that struck me too lol
Glad it didn’t go in bad directions. Keep being lucky!
-
beyond my better judgment drove out to Ontario to pick up 7 drums of WMO
got home, found 4 drums of clean used solvent, 1 drum rock solid ice, 1 drum full of WMO and 1 drum 2/3 of WMO with 10" ice block at bottom.
Meh. bad at this game.
ran a test burn of 50/50 solvent/WMO and seems to burn fine. research says the fluid is Kensol 30, a mineral spirits or stoddard solvent like i use to use to test injectors lol
-
tried a new blower. need a bigger one still.
https://youtu.be/-pertXgWaCw
-
Anyway to run more voltage through that pump to get more cfm
-
ordered another one with 120 CFM and rated at higher static pressure. the wheel blowers really suck with any back pressure.
-
The way the “real†furnace is set up is that it’s got 15psi to atomize the oil and a cage blower to give it a lean burn environment.
Fwiw
-
Cool design this guy came up with
https://youtu.be/9mHNLWGjVRk
-
watched that before actually, ya.
his burn is pretty poor- orange flame with black tips, not very efficient.
but free heat is free heat.
-
this thing was giving me fits today. Must have spent 2hours with it throughout the day after a fresh clean out this morning. my hose bib lost 80% of its uniformity and randomly chokes off flow or goes wild. have no idea whats up. disassembled the valve and cleaned it no change.
still running the quiet blow up pump thats not quiet up to par, but new one should be here any day now to really rip.
-
You have a needle valve in play as well? Or just direct from hose bib? I don’t remember.
-
1/2" hose bib has worked great for 2 years. im wondering if the rubber seat is finally chewing away from oil/solvent. cant think of any other thing that would make it so random all of the sudden. i have another one i am going to try today later.
-
That was my first thought. Rubber seal failing.
I was gonna stop by later today but didn’t finish my waste oil pickup. Have to go back through fairport. I’m glad the “250 gallons†I’m grabbing is more like 100.
I need a better pumping setup. The 120v centrifugal pump I’m using is tired and needs a shaft seal. I’m outputting via garden hose now, need something larger.
-

You saw how fast my gas pump move oil. ~5 minutes to pump a full 275 gal tote. I spend more time setting it up than pumping. Lol. I neck down my pump’s inlet & outlet to 1.5†NPT, to use the much cheaper suction hose and to fit through barrels’ 2†hole. I use suction hose on discharge side, to flow better and won’t get punctured & leak as easy. I put locking cam lock couplers on the pump & hoses/valves, make it much easier.
https://www.harborfreight.com/2-in-212cc-gasoline-engine-semi-trash-water-pump-158-gpm-63405.html
I can loan out the pump, hoses, pick up tubes, valves and fittings if you’d like. They just sit in corner of my shed.
-
Definitely will keep that in mind for next time.
I have a bunch of that cam lock stuff on a shopping list, would be awfully nice upgrade but at $7-9 each it adds up real fast.
-
changed to a new 3/4" hose bib and still same fits with it all day every 5 minutes.
too much going on dont have time to really play with it. but its beyond annoying such a drastic change in performance. it was awesome for along time. planing to do a deep dive on it when the new blower comes in
bah
-
Crap in bottom of bucket plugging intermittently? Or some in tubing run somewhere?
-
bucket cleaned out weekly (i did it 3 times in the last 2 days, not the issue)
problem before funnel/tube.
im almost starting to convince my self its a viscosity issue with the WMO not mixing with the solvent im trying to burn. like its settling out over time and thinner stuff is flowing all of the sudden. i might try switching back to 100% WMO tomorrow to see if that is different.
-
changed out to a 1/2" ball valve lol has been working ok.
im down to about 5 gals of WMO and i have 2 drums of solvent left. hoping to make it a few more days/weeks but its Fing cold lol
-
if you need more I can give you the names a few shops that don't burn.. they might be willing to have you come collect?
-
could be a good list for both of us. the Fairport shop I just collected from said they now need to pay to dispose of the oil. used to sell it instead of have to pay not long ago.
I need to find an inspection place down here, figure I should ask about that too when I do. have an april reg renewal that's blocked so I guess it's time.
-
I still don't understand why auto parts stores still not required to accept used coolant, like with wherever whoever sells batteries and automotive oils and tires. I still have some to dispose from years ago. PITA.
Smike, how do you dispose your waste coolant, from your shop activity; parting out jeeps or from repairs/maintenance/builds? I am this close >< to just start mixing motor oil and coolant, just so its "used motor oil" and take it in to auto parts, but I don't really want to, and you need waste oil for heat lol.
-
coolant is great weed killer in gravel.....
-
picked up about 200gals from Jeremy Sunday night. he is about 10 min from my sisters house which i was headed to for a birthday party
im thinking i have about 400 gals now which should get me through most of the winter plus what i normally make (10-20 gals a month)
-
https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/636043677579634/
-
great deal, im guessing she needs a bit of work at that price though
-
was the price of that 650? it says 800 now lol
Processed 211 gals of oil today into a tote ready for use. separated about 20 gals of hydrogen peroxide and goooo from multiple buckets and drums of donated oil. JJ, Tucker, and Jeremy all have to do way better with their oil storage lol
-
picked up one of those rotary drump pumps, seems not terrible. 50 cranks in a minute or so to fill a 5 gal bucket
-
https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/636043677579634/
down to 500 today, i might have to make a run tomorrow
-

down to 500 today, i might have to make a run tomorrow
Seems like a reasonable price to pay, even if you have to put a couple hundred bucks into it, to have a reliable heat source that doesn't blow your face off
-
cleaned out the furnace and replaced the flew with all new pipe, cleaned up waste oil area and processed a bunch ready for burn. didnt make any changes to setup for this year.
probably the last year for the lower drum, she is looking a little burn out and the clamp ring is getting harder to seal on the front. the top drum with all the heat exchanger work looks great and cleaned up fine, so thats good.
probably will need a new burn pot mid this winter, she has a few holes. going to try and grab some 12" stainless pipe like 0.095" wall to make a better one.
-
bah, fail on FBMP oil 55gal drum pickup today. agreed for 6pm pickup in Elba NY so ran the RAM to my moms and planed on pickup on way home
5pm, txt to guy he says oh txt my brother its at his place.
brother answers im stuck on a roof sorry.
thanks
bah
-
this would be cool with a 3gph oil gun on the front door... shoot hot water to the house and barn

burned a couple gallons today, 42 was too cold this morning. rain and cold got to my bones yesterday at the junkyard lol
haven't put up my wall yet, 70s next week, but sure was nice to be 65 and tee shirt working today instead of 45.
-
3-4 burns completed this week.
having some smoke on shutdown so i think i need to change the depth of my oil tube. the lower drum is on its 4th year and starting to sag so i think its time to build a big boy unit next! not sure if i want to go water boiler to feed house too, or just build another big burner for the shop.
-
all back to good today. burned a solid 8 gals no issues.
-
2.0 design thoughts in the works
i want to switch from a 5gal bucket/valve drip feed to a controllable stepper peristaltic pump with some safety controls on it to increase reliability and safety of the setup and work towards 3.0 that will be a boiler to feed the barn and house.
-
electronic pump stuck in today. works great. hope it lasts and doesnt fall apart.
-
this was the pump i decided to try out:

-
picked up a drum out buffalo way, ended up being half a drum and not full drum but it was a nice clamp top and free. took engine crane and drum clamp. not really bad but kinda annoying to set up, pump up, tear down, strap everything.
need to get back thinking about a truck crane
noticed a few places in my travels today with full or close to full totes just sitting out side. need to stop and make some friends.
-
Was thinking about your heat setup today.
Does that control box work based on flow control. Does it have a flow FB loop? Does it allow for external input control?

no there is no feed back, its just a knob that adjust stepper motor speed of the pump (output displayed in approx ml/min i assume of water)
im sure you could add a controller with a few inputs and outputs to automate the entire system with safetys, im just not that ambitous about it lol
-
cleaned out and processed all my left over oil today.
pulled 15 gals of transformer oil (thats heavier than water) and then 15gals of water out of my settling drum today before getting to waste oil lol
all my good oil condensed to a tote. starting not much more than 50 gallons. need to find some for this winter quick!
-
How many gals do you go thru the entire oil-burning season?
-
500-800
-
And I do about the same volume. Im sitting on maybe 200 right now. And without functioning propane backup, need to get that fixed. Wouldn’t do to have my plumbing freeze.
-
picked up a drum on my way home from moms today. guy says he has 5 more at his other shop and can load. hopefully its good oil, he was a landscaper guy that maintains his own equipment/trucks.
-
Nice.
There’s a few on Marketplace over that way that I almost sent you but I figured you’ve seen them.
-
ya not able to agree on a time with another guy
no responce from a full free tote in syracuse way
-
35F this morning and frost on the trucks when i walked out.
i usually fab up a new burn chamber out of stainless sheet metal i have every year, but havent gotten around to it. took a bean tin and popped a hole in the side, threw it in. ran excellent all day. maybe im wrong in thinking bigger is better? hmmmm.
ran flawless all day and turned it off about 2pm because it was 78 in the shop with no tarp wall up yet lol .
