The 94 4.0 block in an XJ is different from the 97 4.0  block,  Correct? Looking for a 97 block for a special project.

blocks and heads probably match but not all same holes may be drilled and all sensors will definitely be different

Sounds like Chips Black 97 is crapping the Bed.
He is looking for a Core to send out for a possible stroker build.

i think the only year that the blcok got different was the 99-up when they went to COP...

as long as there is a distrib hole the blocks are the same... its the intake manifold that holds all the different computer issues..

I've got a 4.2 rotating assy..... (needs removal. and someone didn't remove a head - but that's gonna happen this weekend)

Ha ha. Funny!>:D

Besides, I had him start the motor for me and I don't think its the engine. Apparently his engine shop agrees as well.
I know the 4.0 has some ticking and clacking... just par for the course.
Chip only hears a new clack.
Id say drive it. While M4 works on all his other XJ's

Didn't spend too much time under the hood. It almost sounds like bell housing rattle. Or inspection cover.
I didn't hear anything that would make me think there is a mechanical issue with the motor.
And it was random.  No clear pattern.

Flywheel or torque converter? He says he always shifts into neutral at a stop sign or traffic light. And it gets more noticeable then.

How hard would it be to throw a 231/D20 doubler on the back of that transmission?

My chassis isn't used up enough for me to really consider this but it is soooooo tempting....

I'm not sure if it's just a tail housing swap on that or more. I think with an AW-4 it's more.

On my 44RE it's the whole rear extension housing including overdrive - but it's just 6-8 bolts and some RTV, can be swapped in half an hour in the truck ignoring shafts and tcase

I'll take the 2wd front axle if you decide to turn it into 4wd.
