Wanted: SM465 of any kind
« on: November 14, 2017, 11:24:41 AM »
Tom is trying to get at least a functioning transmission for his '64 CJ5 with the Chevy V-8.

It used to have T14 3 speed. We're missing parts and cannot locate a front bearing retainer anywhere so he's considering to abandon rebuilding the T14. Do anyone have a SM465 for sale? Either 2wd or 4wd will work just fine.

I think I have a "modern" SM465 in the shop, GM bell housing and hydro throwout bearing

Offroad Design makes a 32spl tail shaft and adapter to make a super short and stout combo.

That was going to be my solution if the auto didn’t work out.

Enlighten me on why it won't fit?
T14      8-11/16" long
SM465 12" long
The SM465 bolt directly to the bellhousing we have, so no adapter needed, not 3" longer as if we reuse the adapter.

Nope.

If we do use a SM465, chances are we will use this. Only 1" thick.

You really have 6 forward, 2 reverse...
Overdrives don’t increase speed.. they just reduce operating rpm..
So you can run at 50 mph 500 rpm less
I never wanted a red car.. always thought they were tacky and common...
I now have 4 very not common cars and they are all red.. :o

i guess when i said it wasn't going to work, i delete confounded expensive solutions to force fit big things into small holes for my mind.

you will also find that 4" in an early CJ5 is enough to make you have to start to push the engine forward like i told tom i did in mine.  your early CJ is even shorter i believe than my 75, 81, or 83 would be.

i had a 60's CJ5   Buick 225 / T98 / d300 texas bolt.   This was the the shortest & strongest combo at the time.   I was on 36" TSL SX tires.  2.5" lift SOA.
My rear driveshaft was crazy short and high angle.  you can see it in the bottom pic
