Plan to brake clean and JB Weld the oil pan. One pinhole. Rest of it put up with tapping.

Trans electrical connector has a drip on it. Not certain if that’s the leak point or not. Needs more fluid still.
Exhaust is open manifolds. No O2 sensors in play. Driver side plug not immediately found.

Would love to find this for a 2500 for $150 or less. Will probably patch up existing crossmember.

The nut ripped out, he jammed a bolt in there to hold it off the bump stop a little.

Proper patch would require removing swaybar and this bracket.
Could bandaid by tying swaybar bracket back to bottom of frame, but that’s not a full fix. Would Need to check steering clearance. Doesn’t help the inner frame where the steering idler is mounted.
Thoughts appreciated.
I am thinking it’s worth a couple hours, but not much more. It’s a few years from other parts of the frame disintegrating anyway but it would be good to keep the plow well attached until that time.
Will need a few brake lines if I want to keep brakes on it too. Need stock of brake lines!

If there’s any issue there it’ll get hard locked in. Doubt it’ll ever leave 4L again

Find a truck, then find a plow to put on the truck. This is equipment you'll need to depend on.

doesnt look worth putting any effort into. if it moves plow as is this year. cut off plow, scrap.

Committed to building new torsion crossmember. Broke in the new chinaplasma removing the old. It’s good.
Could not get keys off of bars, unsurprisingly.
Will dig through materials trailer and scratch at it this week. Back to work tomorrow.
Might do a little work plating the frame while

Depending on outcome of crossmember and power steering:
$55 for an exhaust y pipe on Amazon. I’m thinking worth it to put exhaust gas behind the cab instead of in front of the firewall with likely leaky floors.
How was exhaust on the old Ford, smike? Ever bother you during a plow session?
Also thinking I’ll put some hours on it driving around the yard as an oversize Gus when I can, for durability testing.

never even looked at the exhaust on the ford, seemed to come out pretty far back. it had one functioning caliper on a front corner and that was it

Crossmember took about half a day, maybe a bit more. Would have been faster if I had full threaded 1/2†bolts to run the keys up with. Would have also been faster if I had 5†channel instead of 4â€. Had to do a bunch of grinding to make they keys fit inside the channel, which is how I decided to make it instead of fully fabricating something.
Few other little things to do on the truck. Need to do a bit of fab on the plow foot brackets for the feet I got.

Plow shoes are only good for making furrows. Learn to manually float the blade until the ground is frozen, then you can go at it without too much care. Just accept that you will move a bit of material and need to rake in the spring.

key to plowing gravel: dont push piles of snow past your gravel area on to your lawn.....

Betting you guys are right.
Trans leak was 4x4 actuator hitting the trans electrical plug. Won’t know if that’s good after bending linkage and plugging back in right until refill.
Passenger frame horn is real bad and will not survive without patch work. Swaybar and steering stabilizer in the scrap pile to gain access. Mental templates need to move to cardboard then to steel as long as the leaks can be dealt with.
Found another oil pan pinhole. Drained, cleaned, and JB’d. Will put oil back in tomorrow and see if there are any more.
Power steering return leak may take a pump swap. I think it may be leaking at return tube to the can. I have several spares.
I’m going to not take your advice, and try to patch up the passenger frame horn as long as the leaks become manageable.
If not, calibrated eye says plow could be on the buggy in an hour or two hung from tabs on the front axle. Lift with winch through a block, probably swap to junk winch line. Order parts and a week later could tap power steering for angle rams. It’s a fallback plan.

Mark is right.
Water pump leaking after run time and trans check.
Trans seems marginal.
Shifter wouldn’t reach low. It’s in low now with no linkage installed.
Rear brakes are gone. Front has a seized caliper and are super tight.
Was evaluating trans before patching frame.
Pretty sure I’ll be last owner on this one and it’s scrap sooner or later. Engine runs real rich or burns oil. Smoky.

Patch frame tonight. Hopefully test with tonight’s snow. If the trans seems okay, use it.

Yup, brakes are fucked.
Trans seems fine. Stalled when shifting before it warmed up. One headlight. One brake. One parking lot and one driveway.
Have 2-3†now. Fine for proof of concept, and concept seems proved-ish.
I’d throw front brakes on it if the rotors weren’t behind the hub face. I can deal with caliper bolts but not unit bearings. Maybe knuckle swap from a parts truck? Ball joints might be replaceable. Not much else is.

i only put about 1000 miles on the ZJ this year, really have been driving hot rods a lot.
if it had a new torqe converter and a pair of front seats it would be a 4K jeep. i have about 1200 total cost into it after it got a full front end rebuild and windshield last year.

Put in the shop for Tuesday’s snow. Brakes didn’t fix themselves.

Lots of places at 10-12†now and it’s coming down pretty good. I think around 8†of it is fresh? Tough to tell in the pitch dark.

I'm not very good at plowing yet but the truck did fine. I think the plow is a little low on fluid. I had to fill it up when I fired it, and it was moving slow. Probably aerated.

Ac clutch started dragging and making bad noises and stinking. Hvac off at the time. Unknown if system charged. Unplugging made no change.
I parked it outside in case the belt starts on fire or something. I didn’t check clutch temp.
Packing in the plow lift ram leaks, that’s my fluid loss.
After checking solenoids for plow angle problem, the blade now lowers gently instead of dropping like a rock. Come to think, I think there’s a bleed screw I touched. I’ll bet that’s it.

Ac clutch wasn’t hot. Just noisy. And the screw is the bleed thing so blade drop speed is fast again

Need to cut the fan shroud. Noisy. Some body mount moved.
20 min quick plow. Not sure if I could avoid spoil piles if I took 30 but they don’t much matter. It’s 30 for a more thorough job but it snowed 2 more inches while I was plowing so F it.
Wishing for a sled and loving this weather.

ZJ got stuck today me being dumb trying not to push snow at the RAM and avoid falling off the RTI wall
tractor 3 point was nice to just chain to the hitch and lift, drive away with it in N haha
Also nice to have a Tractor that cold starts 100% fine
moving snow with tractor is painfully slow though, did that last week to clear lower door. meh

Snowplow is MUCH faster! Tractor only useful to stack snow or push back piles.

I hung a plow blade on the front of my tractor off the bucket. Its nice to be able to adjust height and tilt and angle. Also to be able to push snow up into big piles.

All issues were low volts. Probably in combination with terrible wiring, high resistance grounds, and god knows what other fire risks…

I suspect it’s the wiring between the controller and solenoids. I’d suspect solenoid power supply except it does drop. Thankfully I had parked it in the air. Hopefully take a look at it tonight

Nailed this one though. I haven’t measured but it’s just below my knees. Probably 14ish.
Did most of my lot, the neighbors driveway, my driveway, and finished my lot. Not a champion but it’s functional!
This is a lot is now for the size of my lot. Piles are probably 8’ or more.

With any snowfall of substance (volume or moisture content), you should be doing it in stages. It's tough to move all of it at once.

Trans tested for a couple abuses getting unstuck when pushing banks back. Good.
Plow almost wasn’t moving after I finished plowing. Tore into it, changed milky fluid and flushed rams, cleaned filter. Almost like a new unit.

wasnt expecting mid 40s today!

Pushed 3-4” before sundown. 2” since. picked up a third driveway in a row due to a small dog mishap. T got out the other day - opened 2 doors, one inward opening. Neighbor 2 doors down brought him home right away but got nipped trying to put him back in the garage.
Plow tried to lose a mounting pin but I caught it in time. Plow was short a lift pivot point but the 1” pin was still just hanging in the bracket. Spring clip vacated, replaced w giant Cotter key. Good to go.
Lights looked a little dim when done. Didn’t check charging system. Batt shows 12v on dash (not 13-14, 12.). Grounds are known shit. Tomorrow will tell. Probably should have checked before i came in and charged if needed. Alt may be shit but not stone dead? Otherwise it probably wouldn’t run lights and a plow and hvac and a tbi 350 for 4+ hours on a charge

Brake rotors for this thing are 50-60ea
I wonder if I could quickie fix these front brakes with half a dozen bolts and some welding. Probably crack and fail immediately?

Fired up without touching anything but the key and drove around the yard. Still likes to stall if I don't ease into the accelerator but it's tolerable. Plow either needs more volts, or a fluid change again, was moving real slow. Will deal with that shortly.

Fought me to fire up tonight to park inside for the storm
Was running on half its holes at first. Didn’t clean up till I pulled the air hat to look.
Fan was rubbing the shroud bad. Probably collapsed trans mount. So I ripped off the brittle shroud and nicked a very fragile rad. Will got a bottle of bars leak after I buy one tomorrow. Damnit.
Lubed the ac clutch too, was squealing fierce.
Might be coming to the end of this unit. We’ll see.

Anyone need this? Will be up for sale or get scrapped. White XJ replacement won’t push as hard, but I think it’ll be more dependable.

Only picture I have of it, it seems.
Drive around for almost an hour all I’ve the yard pushing grass. Adjusted pivot point so blade lifts higher. Could use some bushings or newer pins, lots of rattles pushing across grass.
Dash is dead. Shows “no bus” I forgot to unhook the battery when done, not sure how long that takes to die. Shifter way too tight, I will break it. Otherwise seems great! that shifter is tight inside the transmission, it has nothing to do with the cable or shift linkage.
not sure why dash is dead, everything worked last time it left my shop.
i think i put front axle ujoints, exhaust work, wiper motor, welded the rear diff / fluid, not sure what else.

Will knew about it, he was saying something about maybe something fried from welding with live batt/computer? Idk.
When I look at interiors between them I’ll likely swap clusters and maybe play with computers. Would be nice to have a working dash in the one I’m so far not selling.

Dash pulled out and kill switch installed inside. Plow back on and leaky tires filled. Battery swapped for a good one. Ready for snow.

decided to push it around for fun. jeep sure is a LOT smaller than a 2500 longbed. good for maneuverability. will be wanting for any actual big snow.
plow motor solenoid stuck on just as I wrapped up. interior master shutoff was very nice for that. I after it didn't want to unstick, I just moved the blade left/right as I parked to not deadhead the pump for minutes. always something!
