Title: M4 Ball Joint press
Post by: M4wdFab on September 30, 2013, 10:40:56 AM: MLC Ball joints were in there like it was they job. most suborn set i have ever done to date- i got mad enough and finally made a tool that i have been thinking about every time i do them.

2 hours of frustration beating and heating things like normal ball joint press with no progress
10 minutes of fabrication
5 minutes to remove 4 ball joints.
5 minutes to install 4 ball joints.

I'm taking it for granted that they don't need any of my $$ which means that unless I can provide all the TLC that MLC needs, she'll be coming to see M4.

Post by: M4wdFab on September 30, 2013, 12:52:09 PM: we had a small engineering discussion on the tensile strength of 3/8"x1.5" mild steel. decided "it would be fine" for 6 ton on each side. Top and bottom is 2x2 .250 wall as short as possible for bottle base.

I'm tempted to do some maths on psi, but I can't really see a point in shear psi and the vertical pressure is just a known quantity somewhere between 8000 and 24000#. that's not so interesting...

that's some crazy shear resistant rust.

The HF pos bent on the first ball joint. >:(

I have a sketch of how I will build the "good" one.

Basically telescoping sides. 1.5" X .25 wall inside 2" X .25 wall outer with through holes for bolts to set the over all length.
2.5" X 2" I beam top and bottom. captured top to hold the jack in place while you load the cups on the ball joint. EZ :)

I think a 12 ton with a screw top would be perfect. Maybe even air/hydraulic...
