Chad has a zj with blown motor he said $450
-
I don't want to work on anything. I'm old and lazy.
-
if i was to do it again i would definitely do a niner or a 4.7L WJ
i know you had a ZJ and probably know all this, but i'll just throw it out there. i didnt know till i had spent years reading/working on Grands
a wj is 63.5 WMS where a ZJ/XJ/TJ is 60. something to consider with an axle swap using, say, a 8.8 at 59.5 WMS (wheel spacers would work and would be needed to convert from 5x5 to 5x4.5
WJs only come with cv shafts in the font axle. if you want ujoints you have to have custom inner shafts made
96-04 Grands with a v8 have the 44a rearend. its safe to 33s locked and 35s locked and trussed. all niners have lsd, some others do. obviously lsd means no aussie. iirc, the shafts are only 0.012" smaller than the 8.8 shafts. problem is the tubes spin in the alum housing.
niners have e-fan stock
most v8s have a 6ball cv joint at the axle end of the front driveshaft. if you lift it over 2 inches you have to convert to a regular ujoint.

Looks familiar

Liz and I talked about it last night and decided to get another small buggy.
We both liked how Atom performed for trail riding. It was nimble and smooth on the rocks. The race buggy was too rough because of a lack of low low gearing.
We want to get another buggy that is light, but has some room for a cooler and tools. 2 seater
I have some options to consider. Do a transaxle (front or rear mount) or do a Tracker/Samurai engine trans-tcase like Atom was in the beginning. The Samurai case held up to the 1.3/1.6 engine. It did not like to big block 2.0/
-
I would prefer to buy a incomplete project. But a cheap chassis might be a good start as well.
Waggy 44s or Toyota axles. NO tons
37" tires.
Bare bones, not fancy.

Tow rig and trailer time again :)
he's got the sweet Durango!!
-
We already have many trailers, and I can tow it witht he Durango, or pick up if I choose to get another one. Even a GC with a V8 will tow fine.
-
so silly
-
i will be laughing the first dana30 stub shaft you blow so hard ill have to go take a nap after
-
if I was ever to start over I'd go Zuk, 6.5:1 w/toy flanges, toy axles. Cheap, light, nimble, schrong enough.
-

Waggy 44s with Chromos will be plenty strong, Toy with Longs plenty strong too.
The stock Scout 44s on Atom never broke a shaft. The spindles fell off, but the shafts were fine. ;D
Eroc is a smart man.
Transaxle might be interesting, lighter and more compact. Driveshafts are where I have issues all the time.
Transaxle is alway in a 4:1ish low range, outputs are large enough, driveshaft adapters are non-existant. Either custom made or welding shit up.
-
Whole 'zuk. Enclosed with wipers and heat? Still cheap and light...
-
Liz is scared of Samurais. :'(
-
tracker then? haha
is zuk tcase the same for auto and standard?
-
Samurais never had auto.
They are divorced mount cases, will work on anythign
-
sidekick must have then? i know theres some kind of swap they do
-
Track/Kick did have auto, I had one in Atom. 2 wheel drive will bolt in and work on the 1.3. Or make a sweet doubler like we did in Atom. ;D
-
Ah OK. Divorced toy adapters are few and far between.

it should be "easy" to use the inner CV joint and part of the axle shaft from the car's axles and adapt to a splined stub on the other end to accept a yoke.
CVs do have some plunge capability to them though, so that could make things interesting and maybe not that easy. Could certainly be the head of a 2 piece on one end, and set up the links on the other end to be the proper geometry that there's nearly no plunge through travel & articulation and just use the CV and no other slip. Could be done but hard to design around.
-
This is how they be doin it

I like that idea.
The only problem I see is placement of the motor/transaxle. Seems it would leave a short front or rear driveshaft, depending on the way you orientate the motor (front engine or rear engine)
-
A traditional t-case set up you get the t-case in the middle(ish) of the car
-
whats wrong with short?
-
Toss Liz and put the engine in the passenger seat... ;D
-
whats wrong with short?
Too short, is the problem.

jackshafts to pillow bearings to run identical driveshafts front and rear.... makes it even easier to run stock CV axles to those pillow blocks.

plenty of guys running them
-
specially with 2 seats and storage room, no prob bob

You're married you should know better than that :)
Did not like the samurai at all and hated the way the profender buggy rode. I liked atom.
-
man, that is rough comming from profender wife
haha
-

I am and I do. :-[
;D

Ryan said it was the way it was geared. The shocks were awesome :)

Looks like a sweet hawg. Very odd drivetrain.
-
suspension and gearing are two completely unrelated things
i think HP agreeing with driver was the main problem liz :)
-
She did not like how it was not slow in the rocks. She should have explained better. It rode fine, until the rock parts, like rock creek. Then it was not geared low enough to make it smooth.

What he said ^

Go faster and plane out!

This is decent. Except for the pink paint.

FS: 94 ZJ, d44, 8.8, 35" PBRs, exo cage
I just don't seem to have time to enjoy this rig, so I am putting her up for sale so someone may be able to.
I bought the jeep about a year ago bone stock and after I barrel rolled my built 93 ZJ. I swapped everything over from my 93 to this 94 within the last year.
Here are the specs:
94 Limited Grand Cherokee
5.2 with ~140k miles
231 transfer case
46RH transmission
Front axle is a d44 out of a 1990 Grand Wagoneer. It has chromoly shafts, CTM u-joints, warn premium hubs, 4.88 gears, Aussie locker, and one ton steering from ECGS.
Rear axle is an 8.8 out of an explorer. 6 lug chromoly shafts from Dutchman, detroit locker, and 4.88 gears.
Has Clayton longarms and Clayton skid.
BDS 6" springs.
35x12.5 r15 Pitbull Rocker radials with less than 500 miles on them.
Corbeau Ultra wide front seats with 5 point cam lock harnesses.
Exo cage built by M&M Offroad (exo cage goes through the roof and floor board behind front seats, seats are tied into cage)
Front ARB bumper with Warn 9000i winch.
Custom rear bumper with swing out tire carrier.
Jeep is street legal and has current tags and registration, but I trailer it back and forth to the trail. This is not a DD, but can be driven on the road.
I am sure I am forgetting some things. I really don't want to get rid of it, but life seems to dictate otherwise.
Price is $7,800
Located in Winston-Salem, NC
-
Way too much money.
-
for your goal or for that rig?
long list of spendy things there..
-
I am leaning heavily to a front engine transaxle setup.
Waggy 44s or Toyota axles. 37" tires.
-
Lets get something bought.

After christmas.
