looks like a lot of other neat classics in that barn.

Truck is in awesome condition

bunch of weird stuff in that barn, he owned them all.  some odd balls and some high end stuff.

truck is pretty solid, was hoping it was in better shape for what i over paid for.  bottom of inside of doors gone, 2 spots in side the cab gone, and bunch of body filler cracking spots on it- meh.  Ill probably end up having to paint fix some areas and paint it.

found the missing emblem on ebay for 100$ actually (usually they are 2-$350) and need to track down the glass marker lenses.  only found one broken one in the parts crate it came with.  did find the missing head light bezel and windshield hinge out parts.

listed axles and frame for sale.

cab, front clip, hood mated

realized today one the inner fenders is missing, that sucks.  didn't see that.
other parts missing: front bumper and front bumper deck piece.  i have a chevy bumper, and can make that other piece i guess.

found missing hood emblem and glass marker lenses on ebay for not too bad.

all glass, seals, fender seals available

much more body work needed than i hopped, bah.  probably 10 spots outside and 2 spots inside require metal / fill

2016 chassis rolled under

some prep and then start lower/cut/lower/cut.  have too look back at my last KS5/2014 build to remind me a few things i did but looks pretty straight forward.

also noted i searched my entire shop for no less than 45 min for and assumed missing first section of the steering shaft for this 2016 rig i swore that i never removed from the chassis, and then realized i was thinking of one of the escalade chassis still had mounted, and all parts needed were sitting the bench.  bah!

continuing on tomorrow.

starter motor is intermittent too but got it so i confirmed it doesn't pop with brake clean

found a 50 page build thread guy did same swap in a c10.  also he has an LS wiring swap thread.

didnt document what he did, bah.

i had john delete vats.
wondering if there is more that needs to be done

it seems e78s are hated in the LS comunity lol.

did find one tit bit to try after 2 hours searching!

Quote
Just a heads up, if you're running the e78 ecm make sure either your "starter enable relay control" wire from the ecm is either hooked to a ground or make sure your starter diagnostics are turned off in your tune. If not, your injectors will not pulse no matter what you do.

Quote
The e78 make sure you turn off the starter diagnostic along with the normal VATS / 02 etc. the starter diagnostic will cause no fuel via the injectors. soon as I disabled that she fired right up.

I've used the Ram Body Builder manual for some specs on my truck pretty often. Nowhere near 1600 pages of material though, that's got to be close to FSM. Nice find

ya that GM doc is what i tried looking at, its usless no connector pinouts, just endlesss wire diagrams- i gave up there.

still no fire, so i guess its a trip to shortsville to have a box unchecked on the tune.  all i can hope is that the starter motor diag shuts off more than the injectors (i have no pop with brake clean) and grounding the pin like stated on the forums doesn't change anything so not hopeful.

engine issue resolved. fired right up.

I had the Vats patch installed, but not enabled.  also did not have starter motor diagnostics disabled.  both of these items kept engine from firing.

all good now engine and trans.  on to more details / wiring.

glass, radiator, and a new starter motor showed up.

Glad I came here to see the rest of the process after seeing the raw materials on FB... nice work.

Did Nick cut those out for you or are you just that good by hand with the plasma?

took about 15min into an extended drive tonight to pop a 30amp fues that was feeding the relay for electric rad fan and fuel pump.  i have done this the same way on 15 trucks and never had a fuel pump that draws 16amps lol

coasted over to the side of the road about 9pm tonight on jefferson rd clay?   :o

found a melted fuse, warm wires.  got stuff bipassed in about 10 minutes with some trash i found on the ground (had zero tools or materials)

made it to autozone and bought some stuff.  bettered my fix and made it home.

added a 3rd relay, separated out the fuel pump on its own.

packed a little roadside bag.  need to start throwing fire ext in rigs too.

yes fuel pump draws 16 amps

fan draws 15 amps.

too much for 30amp circuit after warm wires

first GM i have touched the front a arm alignment bolts/bushings wernt F'd.  both sides cranked to get rid of the large amount of negative camber, it almost looks ok now!

not sure what happend but left lights on while fueling and then smelled sulfer and wouldnt start after fuel.  was kinda blocking exit to fuel station so had to hussel and stick a different battery in and get it moved to parking to further diagnose.

I think the battery just plain gave up and this engine/setup wont run with out a battery connected to it (even with 14.2v on the leads)

swapped and zip tied a wrong size battery under the hood from the bucket van and drove 15min back home without issue.

fresh battery installed
replaced electric cooling fan and changed to front pusher

first fan was blowing 30amp fuses and sounded weird.  bench tested bad sounds and pulling 27amps at 9v on my big charger set to 40amps
new same fan pulls 9amps @ 12v

felt like it lost 4 cylinders on the way to Toms with the bucket truck this week in tow.

in N no load revs up great, in drive or reverse, refuses to give more that 15-20% throttle from a brake stand or normal start out.  20-30mph it comes back but still runs rough.

scanner shows no PCM or transmission codes relevent other than failed MAP sensor, and zero MAP data.

runs same with MAP plugged in or out.  (scanner plot shows no MAP output, but it does show calculated MAP)

i guess 40$ to amazon is easier than research and wire chase first.  bah.

well, 90$ maf local no change.   data still says zero maf, dont know why.  does have a calculated maf shown.  john said it should switch to speed density and be fine anyway unpluged, no change.

kinda feel like i want to check fuel pressure and throw a set of plugs at it.  just feels sluggish and pulsating under 3000rpm.

stumped one why it was just a step change in performance.

I'll say out loud here that maybe it sees brake acuation signal and is eating throttle input to prevent Toyota problems.

I don't know if GM computers do that, but I know VW always has. If you're on the accelerator and the brakes, you have to do some special something to get any acceleration. I think let all the way off and stomp on it maybe more than once.

It's a weird one for sure. And totally worth checking fuel pressure for sanity

i guess when plugs are completly shot you still will never get a misfire code or misfire event logged.  its just pulls fuel based on 02 feed back to not kill it self? weird

i had ordered plugs for it with a rear wheel seal.

pulled pluggs.  second from top only one that had some what of an electrode left, the rest completely hosed, way out of spec, probably 0.200 gap or more (.040 spec)

changed plugs and wheel seal on lift today (both rear wheel bearings had 1/4" play in hub preload)

power / stumble problem gone on test drive.

finally a win!

fixed tail pipe angle that got welded on angled up.

Amazing it was running at all with those plugs! wow

I threw plugs at the Z3 in hopes of smoothing out a rough idle, made zero difference. plugs I pulled were BMW branded at almost 130k and they looked excellent. Those almost have to be original plugs don't they

sold the original 1947 KB3 frame today for 400$!  i guess it pays to hold on to stuff for a bit, i almost scrapped it last month
