25K rear axle rating
11k front axle rating

started life as a 24' box truck

guy has two of them, its twin is at 560K

had recient king pins and service, drives and tracks straight, not a drop of oil i have found.  looks like a small weepage leak on some sort of low pressure return line.  Also an issue around the passenger front brake has some fluid on the tire.

tires are 22.5's rated for 6300lbs or so

cable e pinion brake.

50 gallon tank

fun to drive.

gona research gages and tuners and such.  im pretty sure tuners are a no no on this rigs, but a gage setup would be nice for boose and EGT ect

tuners absolutly... but might have to be dealer done..

They can be turned up, no doubt about it.

Bully Dog advertises such things; if it's not already there CAT could load a different program and bring it to its highest factory power level.

It's oil bath front hubs I'm sure, it's probably an inner hub seal that's oiling the wheel.

Granny-shifting, not double-clutching like you should. You're lucky that 100-shot of NOS didn't blow the welds on the intake.

Sorry it just came to me lol

A freebie mod is to up the fuel pressure. Pull the doghouse in the cab, then pull the fitting on back of the head. Inside there's either a square drive(use a small EZ out) or some odd shape like a torx. Tighten it all the way in, then back off a half turn. Still within factory spec, but at the higher end. Should get you about 70-75 pounds. It'll help the responseiveness a wee bit. Even more if you do injectors

Start with asking a dealer for a reflash(re-rate) on the computer.

FYI dealers should know they cant set to a private buyer with out running though there business.  Lady was nice, but 2 hours wasted and i need to go back to his dealer ship, FML

realized i have no receipt for 3000$ cash given towards "trailer"

Doesnt pull like a cummins and is no drag racer on the hills but i like it.

first 196miles i got 7.7mpg

on the way home from jeffs i bumped a new button on the shifter that lit up an ECON light on the dash- need to research.

First failure weeeee.   Fuel filter burst with a pin hole.  Not sure how much fuel I lost but made it home and noticed the spraying puddle.
Title: Re: 04' 4300
Post by: M4wdFab on June 03, 2013, 12:32:42 PM
stopped by regional to pick up a fuel filter and ask if they forgot about getting me a service quote....

636$ for trans / motor oil and filters and NYS inspect.

i found it kinda funny that the parts cost for the fuel filter was 32$ on the service quote, and at the parts window 10 steps over they handed me a filter for 12$.

i think ill take my business elsewhere.

I think your too used to getting parts from Arie and doing work yourself.  Higher prices on parts if your having work done is not out of the ordinary.   That said towing company will not use them for business anymore for a reason.

Diablo sport M1000 claims 50hp and 1-2 average economy for about 350$

new fuel filter in, filled and didnt hickup at all.

i think it has an electric lift pump, with a primary filter / separator, then a secondary filter (the one that blew) before the hight pressure pump driven off the timing gear case.  high pressure pump says reman on it.  injectors are burried under a guard of some sort.  i dont see anywires. going to them must be pop injectors.

onlything that matters for NYS is they claim rear brake pads have some cracking- sounds like bs gona run over there and take the truck back regardless unless they quote like 150$ or less to do it.

time for big boy truck work!

dealer guy called left voice looking for inspection number he is suposte to Fing do.  i decided instead of having him stick a sticker on it why not have someone else look at the truck.

Pads on sale at regional Parts for 79.95

if service tells me 150$ in parts we are going to have some words and ill be done there.

He mentioned 3-4 things i knew about, belt squeek, wet return line, and chip in windshield that one or 2 of those fail DOT

NYS pads fail only.
Title: Re: 04' 4300
Post by: M4wdFab on June 06, 2013, 12:00:30 AM
service said 183 for parts, 538 installed.  i walked to parts and for 86$ i walked out the door for rear pads.

They were FUCKED on both sides, and a seized slider on pass side.  all fixed and swapped about 3hrs hard labor / learning.  Broke my 3/4 ratchet with a 5' bar.

Thanks to Alex for subbing in to get it back together.

Truck dropped at Regional and he wanted to do it for me tonight but realized his liscence guy was gone for light duty. fine by me since the ZJ was left there earlier.

Good catch on regionals part on this one.  truck stops 3x better than i thought was already awesome stopping.

Torque multiplier may be more useful. I kinda have been wanting one for a few things here and there.

The price for parts on the service side vs from the counter in the same building is insane.

Title: Re: 04' 4300
Post by: M4wdFab on July 02, 2013, 01:53:43 PM
The class of license you need depends on the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of your truck, and on the GVWR of the
heaviest vehicle that you tow with your truck. The gross combination weight rating (GCWR) is the GVWR of the
tow truck, plus the GVWR of the vehicle being towed (see Diagram 1, Chapter 3, page 6). If the vehicle you tow has a
GVWR of over 10,000 pounds, and the gross combination weight rating (GCWR) of this vehicle and your tow truck is
more than 26,000 pounds, you need a Class A license with a tow truck endorsement ("W"). If the GCWR of your tow truck
and the towed vehicle does not exceed this weight limit, you will need at least a Non-CDL Class C license with a tow truck
endorsement ("W").

A car carrier can also be considered to be a tow truck. If you drive a car carrier with a GVWR of over 26,000 pounds, you
need at least a Class B license. If your car carrier has the ability to tow a vehicle of over 10,000 pounds GVWR behind

R permits are intended for big motorhomes. Idk if you can get one if the trailer is the RV as opposed to the power unit being the RV

A car carrier can also be considered to be a tow truck.

they use all these Fing terms and do not define them properlly

I know they don't define stuff well.  I believe there is a section somewhere with every definition car carriers generally refer to the big trailers that hold lits of cars.   A wedge may fall into that.

Different states define "car carrier" differently.

In Florida it's important because they have funny length laws, and if you have 4 cars on you're a car carrier regardless of trailer type.
By most other states, a car carrier is a stinger steered trailer. (WRONG. looking for right hitch name now. The low 5th wheel plate)

NYS DMV's use of terms without any reference to what the fuck they mean infuriates me. These are great examples. So is their use of "commercial" - do they mean a CMV, or an s10 with "commercial" plates?

Fuck you, NYS.

Just run it until you get a ticket then you will know and can inform everyone on here of what that officer decided the law was that day for you.

fixed.

Assuming you're intending to be legal and making an effort to be such, you need to have the damn code printed out and with you so you can defend yourself roadside before it turns into a ticket. If you talk to a DOT inspector or trooper about the specifics of these fine lines they probably don't know it off the top of their head and probably have a different interpretation depending on the day of the week. This even happens with clear-cut stuff.

I'm just glad we don't have weigh stations out here to have to deal with.

Becky at Explorrer RV is out of office today so i get a hold of her manager who informs me the quote she have me is incorrect, and that he must request an exception to the policy allowing to insure with out comp / collision.  He gets back 2 hours later, request denied.  1400$ quote with 2500$ deductable HA! no thanks

i ran another RV policy on progressives site- all questions answered truthfully, personal use, non rental, non business of any sort, and used 30 days or less a year.  162$ a year, new cards printed.

guess i deal with this again if they cancel it in 2 months, and try again to fight the improper commercial insurance they want me to get.

this insurance crap is about as F'd up as the DMV.  Every place i call tells me i "must" do this or that.  crazy.

1.5 months ago when progressive called me and canceled my "rV " policy, i played the game and gave all info to a commercial rep.  gave me 758$ for a year quote.  RV quote was 162ish  fine.

I tried a local agent yesterday who just gave me a commercial quote for 1600$ and required me to give her my trailer information- claiming that for commercial libility you must included the trailer on the policy.  personal auto, its included with the truck, not so with com.  bah.  she didnt care that i have 4 trailers, and only gave here one trailers info- seems fishy

re insured as an RV take that

i had to meet with my insurance guy about potential work and i picked his brain about your situation,i told him what your trying to do as getting it insured as a rv with living quarters and bathroom. he says you may be able to get around it for some time but once insurance sees a vin# doesnt come up as a rv theyll drop it or once you make a claim and see its not a real rv,toilet or not youll be in trouble.only way is to get a homemade title but then no one wants to insure a home made trailer.

those are usually plastic threads in either plastic or aluminum, in a fuel bath. they don't tend to seize up. I'd check availability on the housing/filter as applicable and go to town on it. hopefully it's just a sticky o-ring

ryan and i looked at it last night,  as i reached for the pet cock a wire broke off so i am thinking that was my problem.  reefed on it a little bit and got it to turn and glug glug, was clean fuel no water.

yay broken wires! my backup lights were the same issue - was 18# of coiled wire from the delete zip tied off to 2 18ga wires that had broken once before and weren't repaired properly. cold soldered to the nubs sticking out the back of the plug. Glad it was clean fuel and not actual water. Considering I think we use lots of the same fuel stops that coulda been worrisome. Mine was dry when I swapped the filter a month or so ago

looks like water in fuel light stayed of from 30min into start of trip, through return trip.  so im going call that fixed

Brake line failure was weird.  Some bitch in a honda decided to try and hit the side of me while not yielding to her on ramp in sing lane.  i pump brakes hard to not hit her.

30 min later, upon exiting my ramp, 3 pumps to get any brakes, notice no electric assit humm and foot goes to floor slowly.  drove home.  used hand brake to stop a little twice

2' puddle below ABS / Electric assist thinggy.  looks like removal of tool box will be easy access to top of module where leak appears.  looks like 6 or so lines all pretty cruddy going into the top of this thing.

bah.
Title: Re: 04' 4300
Post by: M4wdFab on October 23, 2013, 08:59:40 AM
took longer to R&R tool box than it did to fix brake line.  all 1/4" stuff, had to get some goofy fittings since there is 4 sizes used on the abs module.  just cut the rusted part out and patched in a new part.

line was for passenger front, no go on cracking bleeders, so with a little enginuity, she is back and firm brakes.  parts to fix again in the truck since some of the other lines are not looking so good.

rear lines new from bob job, front would require 2 new calipers, flex lines, and hard lines.  probably near 1000$   that will be tackled another day.

coolant level fine, so i ran to international and got a 33$ coolant level sensor that snapped in no tools, and still no fire.

RandR coolant sensor
over fill coolant

clean all battery connections
check both fire wall ground posts (only online suspect noted)- mine are factory seam sealed outside, factory clean and tight inside
no crank
note- intermittent power to gage cluster while cranking- never noticed this before.

Title: Re: 04' 4300
Post by: M4wdFab on February 18, 2014, 10:18:30 AM
the two google searches mostly say its a clean power issue to the ECM.  if there was a fuel pressure issue or injection issue it would throw a code and light.    I did check fuel pressure after crank, tons spraying out of lift side shrader though.

when you key on the gages full swing and all lights go on and off.  when you crank, its almost like it tries to do the gage test multiple times, leading me to believe there is loss of power or ground to the dash/ECM

biggest forum solution is take both ground studs apart and clean, check chassis to cab ground, eliminate 2 sets of weather pack connections in the battery box, check battery connections.
Title: Re: 04' 4300
Post by: mr.mindless on February 18, 2014, 10:52:04 AM
redoing gauge test definitely sounds like intermittent or dirty power to ECM.

Could it be something at they key, losing power on ign while in crank position? wild hare idea, other connections much more likely

talked to insurance. they were helpful and faxed (who still faxes?!?!) documents i need to take to DMV and did not cancel my current policy (yet).  Now have documentation that shows coverage through sum of 4 policies with a 9 day lapse of coverage in June 2013.

Registration was suspended for this lapse and has been suspended since August 4th 2013.

i was cited for
unregistered motor vehicle
uninsured motor vehicle  (BS, its insured, just had a 9 day lapse)

i had no paper work for trailer (with wrong but vailid main plate, trailer not titled to me, but no marks or tags bah), she didnt seem to car about the trailer with two buggies on it.

all in all its a 3$ a day fine, and some running around and a court date- but i did learn what info is avail to trooper when plate is run.  good printout she gave me.

Edit*  running around getting all my documents was waste of time- sat at DMV for 40 minutes to pay 8$ per day, 72$ fine for 9 days of insurance lapse.  they needed no documentation from me other than payment.

have piece of paper now that says suspension is terminated, and you only get the option of paying a fine once every 3 years!  neat!

This system baffles me the gross waste of time and resources.

so Mark, typically would paying the civil penalty, and valid proof of insurance around the the 9 day lapse through current be grounds to dismiss the 2 citations or do i have to do more work / pay more?

If there was no lapse at all, I'd guess that they would dismiss everything.  No telling what they'll do with yours.

I had the same situation.  They suspended my license for failing to pay an out of state ticket (that I paid and had proof of) WITHOUT telling me.... >:(

Found out when insurance company went to renew my insurance.  That was a nice phone call.  "Hello Mr. Meyer, do you know you have been driving on a suspended license from .... and we can't renew your policy. WTF NYS

Wiring diagrams need to be procured.

I would shortcut fix it with 3 relays in the battery box. Fuse their outputs separately or just run em all off a ~30a self-reset. Trigger right left and run with the truck's wiring and just feed the trailer from the battery. At least you'd quit killing truck power from faults in trailer wiring.

i think there is more going on.  test would be to run trailer with matts truck, we dont seem to have issues there other than matts plug lock is worn / broken

would make more sense its the rigs problem if it happens with several trailers
Title: Re: 04' 4300
Post by: M4wdFab on June 02, 2014, 09:09:03 AM
my guess is there is two things going on.

a limit the truck has for trailer power- and broken freyed melted wires.

for the last year- it has gotten pissed with the kitchen hauler after 1 hour ( all non LED), and my black trailer has made it go dark once or twice (all LED except brake lights)

never had problems with wedge (all LED) until recently.  found lots of wire issues on wedge.

3 relays should fix it easy when i get the time, but i think improvements have been made.
Title: Re: 04' 4300

any chance of broken wire randomly shorting?
Title: Re: 04' 4300
Post by: mr.mindless on June 02, 2014, 09:40:46 AM
100% chance on wedge of frayed wires shorting. most of the wiring is jacketed and fine, but where it's stuffed in the tubes (which almost all of it is) and not jacketed it's wearing through. I found one really bad spot at one tail light but could not get the other three out on the side of 5&20 returning last weekend, and that was not the final issue.

Post by: M4wdFab on June 02, 2014, 10:48:40 AM
i pulled all that apart in the back and fixed like 3 places.  found a wire wich i believe to be an original plate light location, hot, shinny, and melted!

relays next dayed from summit!

Title: Re: 04' 4300
Post by: M4wdFab on June 13, 2014, 02:13:24 PM
trailer power for running, left bright, and right bright are new fed through a 40 amp auto reset breaker, and 40 amp relays.

gave me fits, one of the relay socket pigtails i got from summit two of the wires were swapped in different pin locations!

once i got that figured out, everything i did worked the first time!

There is a guy in Williamson steves truck repair.  I bring my dump truck to him to do any work on it since I just look at the lug nuts and my back starts hurting.  He did my inspection and is a straight guy

175$ in parts and in stock at regional- about same cost at rock auto.

Ill probably lube everything and ride dirty this weekend- asses options next week when i have time time.  Ill probably tackle it.  i watched a youtube video on doing a big truck and it didnt look too bad just heavy

bought parts- got home opened the hood and pulled a hub cap.  decided the parts were wrong.

went back to regional, different guy at the counter.  handed him again the registration to pull the vin, he comes out with another box and asks for 40$ more.  haha

drank 3 beers and decided my impact gun still didnt budge a lug nut, pumped a tube a grease into the truck and called it good!

bah

Yeah, pretty much a mandatory to have 1" impact gun for MDT and up equipment. I worked at a HD repair shop and they had HF's earthquaker 1" impact gun and it work wonders.

alternatively, get a torque multiplier? http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/tow-rigs-trailers/1726730-anybody-use-torque-multiplier-remove-truck-lug-nuts.html

Alex helped me do the rear lug nuts.  it was terrible whip lash with a 5' bar on a 1" ratchet.  it was quite pain full in anyway we got them to budge.

I thought about getting another impact, i guess its inevitable i need one. bah

i figured you were on the phone when i was trying to push you , then you were gona again.

i set the cruse at 65 and slow down as marked.

i almost slammed into an aztec, i locked up the rear axle and was skid steering away from it with horn on into the other lane.  i think it was my fault as i saw you turn right on red and i assumed there was a green arrow for right turn.  bah

also missed a dear by 8" right around earthday camp ground road sunday morning.  not good but 2 lucky calls! ill take a lost battery box cover.
