picked up this guy tonight, in the rain. runs and kicks good.
ABS light popped pulling it on the trailer, weird.
in the light, only one fender has a really small portion starting to blister, other wise clean body, clean underside.
front clip needs reattachment after failed dismount from wedge >:(
everything looks to work, a few latches and snaps broken in the center consol. clean tan leather, heated seats, moon roof.
stock wheels, 1 year old tires in great shape. cant wait to go through it, plate it, learn some stuff from mikemike, and run it another 100k
-
lmk what it need ;D
-
nice! this the roof rack machine?
-
ya.
has some break in damage. glove box / center consol / roof rack.
-
Glove box, center console are common wear items too. may be tough to junkyard.
if the windows are power and are still good they're probably fine. 99-01 had regulator problems.
I grabbed my diag computer and cable and threw them in the eagle. we can turn EGR duty cycle all the way down if it hasn't been done yet, I'll show you where to check to see if the manifold needs cleaning. Can check timing, and can adjust IQ for smoothest operation.
There's also a free mod you can do for about 30hp with a resistor in the fuel pump harness, it's probably plenty of power to be satisfied with. I eventually did injectors in mine and it was a little cleaner power since it was shorter duration, but not much more power to be had than that without a turbo upgrade. Called the "evry mod". Needs a switch (and deserves latching relay setup, since it throws codes if you start the car with it on) and an adjustable pot.

cool, thanks mike
The abs light popped after i skipped and lugged it a little on the trailer. he said he had never seen the abs light on before. hoping it shuts off after a few road miles :-[
ill try to get some plates on it today, but it needs to get thrown on the lift and the front fixed before driving. also wana check lug nuts as guy swapped them 5 min before i arrived.
-
leather needs a good washing and vac, they had kids :o
no surprises under the seats or trunk.
-
The abs light popped after i skipped and lugged it a little on the trailer. he said he had never seen the abs light on before. hoping it shuts off after a few road miles :-[
Funny, my 3500 will do the same if I lug it a bit. ABS light is always on but it'll throw the brake light until the next key cycle. I've never figured out why.
-
brakes feel squishy to me, but i have never owned a car haha
the battery in this thing is like the size of my international batteries :o
-
everytime I get in the grand cherokee I almost go through the first stop sign :o
-
5.9 plates transfered, got a sticker for it.
i swear this year i should have just done the dealership liscense. no way the coin i have given the DMV in the last 3 years would have paid for a dealer fees for 10 years
-
have you seen the paperwork to get a dealer plate...
like the bible... New and old testament..
-
a few of my co workers do it, cant be that bad. one guy said he has gotten audited in once in 10 years that was somewhat of a hassel.
-
brakes feel squishy to me, but i have never owned a car haha
the battery in this thing is like the size of my international batteries :o
A lot of that is a battery jacket, but it's still a biggie. I ditched that when my batt went and got one damn near the size of the jacket thing :)
I recall good pedal and good brakes in mine. I have the tool needed to turn in the rear calipers when you do pads. They rotate & squish, not just squish. Something about how the ebrake works.
-
I hate those brakes, I whish i knew you had the tool. ... took me an extra hour to do Melissa mom ford brakes.
-
this thing screws!
super fun to drive lol
need struts and springs around, probably a few wheel bearings.
power train is def not stock!
-
And you laughed when I had a GTI commuter.
-
and id still laugh at you in a GTi
;D
-
I'm still trying to figure out how you guys get into those.
Granted me squeezing in an MG is probably more of a magic trick.
-
german cars are huge.
i had to slide the seat up 2" to reach the clutch when i got into it the first time.
tons of room
we had 5 adults in it for the first test drive, granted it was a little clown like, but do able lol
-
wheel bearings look like the lame ones you have to rebuild bah. miss jeep unit bearings
-
I did front wheel bearings on mine. It was a shit show, but done with hand tools. I never had to do a rear. I'm pretty sure it's left rear on yours that's noisy
-
rear emblems ebayd! because im that guy!
-
You know what guy group is the largest purchaser of Jetta.
-
diesel nerds?
-
jeff did you man up and get a real truck yet? ;D
-
aw man the badge colors mean different HP rattings, opps. well im close haha

good read for someone of my level

That wont sit will with the tdi crew...

people rebadge em all the time. meh!

i think im close though. silver T with Red DI was all i could find on ebay

-
you'd be crucified on a honda forum lol
-
haha, i am no car guy
-
You have an ALH - which I could swear ran through 2004.
-
had this on the lift last night
someone cut the bottom tow coils off the stock springs on all 4 corners!
clean underneath, needs brakes, springs, i think the front inner fender wells are rubbing on tires making the noise
-
Oh boy, at least heat them. Lol
-
maden buffalo voyage tomorrow!
packed a tool bag and code reader. she got some fresh zip screws in the front clip!

so much want on this unit
http://rochester.craigslist.org/cto/4748054399.html
-
seems 2K over priced compared to what i paid
wagons are Fugly
-
i gave 2700$ for mine, 2000 with 296K on the clock. Rust free, repainted. needs 300$ in OE parts thrown at it to be 100$ but more than road worthy as is.
-
Yea but your not a Mason Smike.
I can see the Troy driving around with the hatch bungee Corded down and a wheelbarrow sticking out the back.
-
its a commuter car not a work van lol
-
I'd rock a wagon!
-
its a commuter car not a work van lol
golf/jetta sedan: commuter car
jetta wagon: work van!

I love my wagon commuter!

I love my wagon commuter!
Merc != VW

I love my wagon commuter!
Merc != VW
Not sure what this means haha
-
you're driving a Mercedes wagon aren't you?
Not quite a vw wagon...
-
Yeah, I just don't know what != means
-
Yeah, I just don't know what != means
Computer-nerd-ese for "not equal"
-
Oooooohhh ok. Gotcha. Yeah, far from computer nerdom here.
-
Mike, do you know if a 14" wheel will fit my TDI?
looking at snow tire options, and summit has these
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/crr-83-4418/overview/
the snows that came on my ranger could swap and id be in 160$ in wheels and done
-
I think you need 15s to clear your brakes.
-
poopies ill have to look when its on the lift next time.
-
sent you an email as to when you want that next time to be
-
worked on this guy tonight.
rear springs
rear shocks
front struts
front rotors / pads
oil filter
fuel filter
air filter
need to grab brake tool to put rear pads in from mike
grab some oil
-
popup is in the driveway, tool is on the floor inside the side door. In case you want to grab during lunch and schedules don't align, or if you beat me home after work...
-
man im glad this thing isnt a customer car haha
bad luck and continue to screw myself.
looks like i need a rear caliper, and snapped a fuel fitting on second dis-assembly of fuel filter to fill.
brakes are odd- first half pump tight, then terrible squishy. going to do a full bleed, then replace the sticky rear caliper. zone and advance were way to proud of them to just grab and go. kinda lost my ebrake so that needs some adjustment i guess.
oil changed. driving. ride much better. still some clanks up front.
-
brake squish and ebrake probably related? rear calipers need to come back out. self adjusts with ebrake application IIRC
-
ya that rear caliper needs to get replaced. the piston dust seal was torn / flapping. left side appears to be newer and retracted easily.
gona do a fluid level check also. something goofy could be going on if its way over filled
-
for some reason that reminded me of an ABS bleed mode that can be triggered in the computer.
I think that was only if the master or ABS pump was replaced though, so hopefully nevermind on that.
-
this thing is getting on my nerves
front driver wheel bearing had play and was def shot. you have to pull the knuckle and press in new parts. done.
still makes humm like a jet ski
abs issues taken care of with rear sensor swap. PITA but done.
abs functional in a panic stop, brakes are weird until a few cycles after a panic stop.
running it for now. rear hubs dont look at all like they want to come out easy.
-
has been cold starting ok so far
let me down this morning. 4 failed cranking starts with 3 key cycles each. pleanty of crank but no fire. not even a pop.
Truck said -8F after walking over to the shop.
booooo.
-
dipstick oil heater...
-
haha
-
outlawed in Canada from car fires lol
cant use in plastic dipstick tubes (like VW)
-
I have them here
-
They'll start fine without glowplugs until it actually gets cold. can check resistance on them, or can just replace them and the harness and be done with it "forever".
-
i figured a glow plug failure would be known to CEL
something def partly works cause it gets mad if you dont cycle the key enough
-
you probably have 2-3 at least kinda working. but not 4 fully working.
-
Mercedes glow plug light stops illuminating if more than one plug goes bad. I've replaced 3 total so far. In low teens at night leaving work, it usually takes 5 attempts to start. I let the glowplugs glow for about 25 seconds as the relay keeps them on for 30 seconds even after the light goes off.
Do the glow plugs stick right into the combustion chamber on an DI?
-
Skip the technical stuff and spray some ether in the air cleaner.
-
im gona go with no on that one haha
i guess a cold hole or two would agree with the banging and thumping on 2-3 cylinders for a few seconds after starts this week haha
-
Ether worked on the old backhoe every time. If the battery was up to it...
-
Skip the technical stuff and spray some ether in the air cleaner.
Don't you dare do that with operational glowplugs OR grid heaters!!
-
OK, fine. Don't blow it up. Or start it on fire...
I guess the ole backhoe was glo-plug inop.
You know my motto...
-
choke cable is frozen on the mowzer. ether got it going!
I really hate having to park that outside :*(
-
Not to hijack the thread....mike, we always sprayed the hell out of our choke cable on the 140. If it's the same wound spring style cover as ours, they love a good soaking of wd40 or whichever is your favorite stuff. Bent it one winter from freezing up and learned our lesson.
-
Castle makes a white lithium grease with a red straw deal...
Use that in all cables and linkages... Works nice on seat slides
-
this guy kicked and spit and started though, relocated to shop lot to think about what it has done.
-
god this thing is really pushing into the negative investment. i think one of my worst choices. bah
Got it on the lift tonight, found one vacated driver lower ball joint bolt, and the other two were loose. fixed, and test drove. stopped for fuel and rear left locked and smoking.
changed out Caliper. delco copper washers supplied wrong size by a lot but get it on and bled.
no pulls or drags and all seems good. gona put 200 miles on it tomorrow.
meh
-
Since the dippy craped out on me I was looking at these sweet rides.
-
What happened to the Diplomat?!
-
they just want stupid money for them even to 200K
they are sweet little cars- just seem bitchy to get the bugs out that come with high miles.
-
Something went in the transmission on the diplomat.
I was finding them pretty common between $2000-$2500 but high milage. Right now I have just been running the truck I will probably pick one up this spring
-
god this thing is really pushing into the negative investment. i think one of my worst choices. bah
Seems like a ways to go before that's true...
Tapatalking in traffic
-
if not for Arie parts id be in $4500 and 30hrs of labor, for a 3K jetta....
thing is WAY paste poor investment
-
It may have crossed that divide... :-x
Tapatalking in traffic
-
i start bitching about it and yup- comes home on a flat bed.
at least it took me to 30 for my first tow truck ride at 186$ to get it home
-
gona try to push this thing in tonight and look at it
bah
-
what happened exactly?
-
blue smoke, loss power, kinda came back for a sec, more blue smoke, coasted to side of road.
suspect skip timing belt tooth, or fuel deliver issue. appears to have lots of air in clear supply line to inj pump
-
Mike does it have to be running or just cranking to get timing through VAG com?
-
has to be running to graph timing, I believe.
I believe I have all needed tools to set static timing on a ALH. Not a small job but not horrible. pull full timing belt cover, rotate engine to TDC (there's a nearly invisible mark on the flywheel and a sight window), pin injection pump, check cam position.
-
My guess is bad turbo.....
Is timing jumping teeth a thing? I have never had anything just randomly jump timing. I have had belts break, or gears strip, but never just random tooth jump and everything else is fine. I am guessing its a chain?
-
check the tee on the top of the fuel filter. these are notorious an issue and let air in. its on the return.
-
timing is a toothed belt, and old belts can and do skip teeth. This is supposedly not an old belt so if the job was done right that should not be the problem. If the tensioner was reused and locked up or failed, more likely.
bad turbo the car would still run. also, smoke should be black.
blue smoke does say oil to me.
white smoke should be fuel starvation, but all other symptoms are pointing me to a fuel supply issue.
-
That tee was already broken once, and glued somehow? Bad o-rings on there can cause big issues as well.
here're two fixes:
http://www.idparts.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=1798
replace the filter base and run a spin-on filter, with return bypassing. not finding great links... I don't recall where I bought mine but I think I did reuse the troublesome tee http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/325340-2-micron-fuel-filter-cat.html
there also used to be a couple places that made a bypass that plugged the hole and sealed things up while reusing stock fuel lines. didn't find quickly, and have some work to do now instead of searching :(
-
Has the fuel filter been changed recently?
-
less than 1000 miles ago she got a new fuel filter.
i didnt fill the fuel filter when i changed it, but then talking to mike 2 days later i took it apart to fill and the little plastic POS had dried out and snapped with out fuel in it
in an attempt to get it mobile we crazy glued it and lubed it, and its run for 1000miles no issue no bubbles.
the first place i was going to start was bipass the supply and returns in a fresh jug and see if it runs. then go to timing stuff
-
sounds like a 12v
-
it was single digits Saturday morning 8am when i left. probably 15 degrees when it died on the way back.
car had sat for basically 3 weeks with half tank of fuel. then i topped it off Friday night before heading to buffalo. made it 90 miles before dead.
-
gota be hopefully this. need to track down a new filter and plastic thing a ma bob
check the clear, plastic line between the fuel filter and the Fuel Injection Pump (FIP). Beetles don't have this clear line and >2004 cars don't have this line. There will typically be a small bubble at the top of this line that is maybe an inch or so long. This is normal. What is not normal is if the fuel line is empty. This means that either the fuel tank is empty, the filter is plugged from contamination or gelled fuel or you have an air leak and the fuel is draining back to tank. If there is any fuel leak on the pump or if the little hoses between the injectors are wet then you have an air leak and the fuel is draining back to tank.

drug into shop tonight.
Maybe i was wrong about air in supply- now just has small bubble. fuel at #3 when cranking.
pulled turbo boot, checked shutdown thing is open
monkeyed with stuff for about 2 hours in the heated shop, gave it one last foot to floor and long crank- fired.
runs fine, 10 mile test drive.
guessing water in fuel broke free, i put some diesel gel treatment in it. bah.
annoying!
-
Key word heated shop
-
i guess i need to make a "recovery bipass kit" with a small under hood fuel bottle and hoses to bipass tank / filter / lines to avoid future 186$ tows.
and keep fuel additive added... not really a big deal. 5$ for 2 fill ups
-
4 key cycles seems to be the trick in current preheat condition
12degrees this morning started quick on first crank
-
possibly have a buyer looking at this tomorrow ???
-
Yeah I saw it on CL. That was quick. Just lost interest?
-
its a nice car, i think i bit off too much with a 300K car
i cant loose any more money or labor on it.
it sucks in the snow so half the time i have taken my truck to my moms, and that was really the only point of it to cut down on diesel costs.
surprised i haven't gotten a ticket with it either, its fast
-
200 miles yesterday no issues with fuel treatment added.
changed glow plugs, no change. old ones bench test good anyway. wrong glow plug relay so didnt swap.
-
Still behaving
something seems to stick on the ebrake occasionally, and also the head light idiot chime is very selective in operation.
-
took two weeks for my asshole mechanic to get this on the lift to change out the alternator.
About what i expected took 3 hours. all of the write ups and John said you have to pull the right fan. none of the write ups said anything about pulling the tensioner. no fan removal needed, but i could see how that might help a bit.
learned something about alternators and ac compressors- never new the little metal thread things moved as you tighten up the bolts.... for install you slide the bolt threaded in a few threads and wack it to open up the mounting hole! one of those things that just makes sense but i never knew i guess.
fixed light issues, and also a few zip screws to cure the shut down rattle that was a loose heat shield. should be a new machine. still needs a rear left wheel bearing.
-
and once again thanks to Arie for providing the proper parts 1st time every time!
-
up to 300425miles and driving daily
still for sale. some of these people are comical.
-
ran to buffalo Tway exit to meet up for a CL deal. 540miles to fuel light on this tank! love 6$ Buffalo trips!
-
bump for Nick
current issues
exhaust rattle / temp fix of failure before cat
has had a wheel bearing hum since bought, cant find which corner, replaced loose front driver, still noise, all tight.
hard starts below 10F, probably needs a harness. plugs changed.
needs NY inspection
wont have time till Oct to deal with anything on it, still daily driving.
-
power steering whine twice in the last 2 weeks found low fluid and filled then ok. guess she has a leak somewhere.
boo
-
ah, the joy of cold hard starts has begun. need to work on that bah.
-
put a toggle switch in for the glow plugs, works mint!
-
On a new relay? Must be a bad temp sensor somewhere if not. Weird.
Tapatalking in traffic
-
completely bypassed and just put a 50 amp fuse and relay to the 2 wire glow plug harness. no idea what the issue was, not worth my time to dig
-
-
fired right up this morning without 8 seconds of cranking.
-
power steering high pressure hose changed
exhaust welded up
tire pulled and patched.
unit is 100% ready for winter. still looking for a good deal on some snows maybe.
-
What size? I bought some 195/60/15's foor a car that is now in Texas. Brand new
-
thats the size i need
-
found hardline on rack leaking. pulled hard line and cleaned and soldered up the pin hole haha fuck you VW
-
back on daily duty from wonder down
http://rochester.craigslist.org/wto/5329756403.html
need!
-
home run
tires are mint and like new! 140$ delivered to shop! steal!
-
snows swapped over!
-
snow tires thumbs up!
-
yesterday, started up at work cold, fine- then drive to Jeff rd all the way felt like no turbo, 1/3 power. parked for 30min, started then fine. fine today.
no idea. weirdness.
-
Codes? Smoke? Probably fine...
Tapatalking in traffic
-
CEL still on for glow plugs not sure if anything else.
no smoke when foot on floor. usually it rolls coal and makes POWER but it was like something wasnt fueling right, or no boost to call for fuel. It was fine after sitting in the lot for a hair cut and drove home 100% power
-
no start with a heavy slow crank sunday! probably be fine later this week, i didnt want to beat on it.
-
Mine wouldn't start today. Needed just a lil boost. I think the terminals need cleaning.
Tapatalking in traffic
-
took a deposit today, gone tomorrow.
boo for loosing money on this one. was a good run, TDI's are not for me though.
-
thats a shame!
found a screaming deal on a SUPER clean Passat TDI. putting that money into 571 instead though :(
-
thats a shame!
found a screaming deal on a SUPER clean Passat TDI. putting that money into 571 hiinstead though :(
Not good enough of a deal to buy then flip to get more money for 571?
-
spring car buying season is upon us.. mike will be fine ;)
-
the only way to make enough profit on a flip is if it needs work, and I don't have time or space to do work.
-
gone paid in full.
perfected the "im sorry the plates are home in the safe" "o thank you for balance of payment, i just have to scrape the registration and inspection sticker off" your welcome to leave it here as long as you like.
