Alright, after having it basically just sit in varying forms of disrepair, I'm finally going to start fixing up my 1974 CJ5. By no means will this be showing off the jeep and my work type thread, more a home for me to ask for help/recommendations.
Brief History:
- 1974 Jeep CJ5; Dana 30/44; AMC 258; T18 Tranny; D20 T-case
- Got it in 2012 from my Grandfather not long before he passed away, for this reason I have to keep it.
- Mike has done all sorts of work to it over the years: Built a rear bumper, sliders, and skid plate. Tied the roll cage into the frame. Converted the front to disc brakes.
- In late 2013 I took the tub off, rewired the whole darn thing and gave it a fresh coat of paint.
- From 2013-present it's only moved maybe 100 miles most of that plowing my driveway.
- Was parked pretty permanently after finding a frozen muddy mess in the transmission.
Task List:
In no particular order
- Rebuild Transmission - leaks and was full of mud, also need to repair the reverse switch somehow... leads are busted off and I could never find a replacement part.
- Rebuild Transfercase
- Parking break lever/bracket needs to be replaced. The old pedal is long gone and a generic floor lever was installed by the previous owner, but the bracket is crap. May make a semi center console while I'm at it.
- Needs a new battery, old AGM sat uncharged for too long...
- Front bumper install with winch.
- Front steering box was replaced in 2013 but leaks like a sieve now...
- Front and Rear diffs need new seals all around... they also leak everywhere
- Been debating installing some Aussies while I have the axles open
- Leaf packs are pretty old and rusty, likely do a YJ leaf conversion
- Engine smokes and runs pretty crappy... not sure where to go on that one.
And finally a picture of the heep when parked in 2013.

What is the goal? Ice cream runner? Mild wheeler? Tons and 40s?

Light/Moderate wheeling and cruising down to the bars/breweries nearby.
Still considering buying a wrecked TJ (plenty of them around here) and Frankenstein-ing them together.
-
TJ/CJ sounds like a LOT of work and will yield a rear driveshaft length of about 10"...

Would stretch the body to fit the frame, but again. Just a pipe dream I think.
Saturday the plan is to drop the tranny and t-case and get it torn apart.
-
Good starting point. Next would be springs to get it a reliable runner, smoke or not. That way you can enjoy the process, however slow you want to take it.
-
battery and trans sound most important, followed by steering and axle seals. check steering backlash adjustment. brace may help keep it alive or sealed as applicable.
pull that reverse switch if it's important to you, I'm sure it's relatively generic. measure threads and share photo...

Any battery suggestions?

something with enough volts & amps for activities :)
I really don't.

My Deka Intimidator AGM 34/78 has been resurrected from death 4-5 times now. Good price point (esp from Arie 8) ).

How did you resurrect yours? thats what my current one is. Multimeter says 0v :-[

connect in parallel with another battery and put it on 2 or 4 amps for a few days and see what it does.
I've never had a charger with AC capability but that's the next step
-
The AC is supposed to be able to break up the sulfation on the lead plates, which is what kills batteries.
if you have access to drain and refill, another thing to be done is drain the acid, fill with distilled water and hook to charger. Rinse it that way a few times and put fresh acid in. Not something I've done, but Heard About On The Internet! which you know means it's true.
-
Actually this was a good reminder that I own a variable DC power supply.
Following this page: http://batteryuniversity.com/learn/article/charging_with_a_power_supply. I've got it sitting at 14.4V CV, in the last 20mins its crept up from 0.00A to 0.08A, so perhaps there is some hope here.

Assuming I find no seriously big problems in the tranny & t-case I'm planning to purchase rebuild kits from Novak. They seem to get a good reputation, anyone ever deal with them?

Nothing goes wrong when you buy from Novak..
There kits are complete and they talk shop..
All kits and parts I have purchased from them have been top notch.. actually just ordered some Buick headers...
But be prepared to replace gears when rebuilding those trannys.. then call me because that’s where the part hunting starts...
-
i have a tote full of dana 18 and 20 parts someone can have for FREE... just come get it out of my shop.

Would love to, but I live in AZ now

Yeah. Tom still can’t find a part to fix the T14 in his ‘64 CJ.
-
Have to buy a new jack on my way home today, forgot I sold mine back in Rochester. Got me thinking if I should take out the tranny and t-case from the bottom or just remove it all with the engine. I know nothing about engine work but I did want to give the engine at least a good once over. Would mean buying a hoist and engine stand along with the jack, but thats not a huge deal.
thoughts?
-
Maybe a compression test before pulling the engine to determine if it needs head work or rings? Smoke could be a poorly tuned carb?

Carb is on my list to be replaced, its just the stock carter, always given me issues.
-
whats wrong with the trans or case? those things are pretty hard to hurt.

The last time I was off to go wheeling, winter of 2014 or something, I couldn't get it into gear. Turned out the entire thring was frozen solid with mud... So I want to tear them apart as I'm sure it hasn't been happy running with mud for lube

Everything for the T14 is available from crown and
Gear wizard if you want better quality....

So, what I've thought was an oil leak is actually green fluid way back at the tranny. Didn't seem right
-
clean gear oil is kinda greenish. I don't think you have any of that though.
taste test
check coolant level
check temp probe
check freeze plugs
-
I figure I should drain the tranny and tcase before removing. Any need to drain engine oil? I've never removed this, I assume I just remove the bolts at the bell housing?
Side note, trail damage is worse under here than I recall. New oil pan needed... Mike's skid has held up well though.

Got it out, should have pulled the bell housing too, lots of rattling rusted parts in there...
Pretty heavy for a one man job. Noticed my exhaust header is cracked right where the pipes meet up so they're falling off, will need to source a new one if I keep the engine. Opened the inspection cover, didn't see any catastrophic issues, just muddy.

Thread hijack....
Google search ‘crown and gear wizard’ didn’t find anything?
Red circle is pretty much all what we need but can’t find it anywhere.

Also because ya'll are like minded, here is my new welding table I built that I'm super proud of:

I really can see the climate even all pics are in the garage. Jealous.

I got the two split today, though I can't say I really knew what I was doing. There is a large aluminum adapter mating the two, is that "normal"? It also didn't feel right that the gears separated like that, I mentally figured it would have been mated with a spline, but again.. no idea wtf I'm doing :)
-
Cus its not factory...
http://www.advanceadapters.com/products/50-7201--ford-t18-to-jeep-dana-20-adapter-kit-large-index-cases/
got one of these

short CJ T18s are more hard to find and $$, common option is to get a Ford T18 and adapt it down.
cool!

Since I've gone this deep I figure I may as well replace the clutch. What all do I need? Haven't even gotten the bellhousing off so I'm not sure what to expect. Also considering remove the old clutch pedal linkage and replace it with a hydraulic setup. I noticed novak sells a slave cylinder kit, are there off the shelf parts that would do the same? Any help would be great
-
Called Novak this afternoon, awesome people to work with. Tranny and T-Case rebuild kits ordered :)
How do I replace the clutch and what parts do I need for everything that lives within the bellhousing? :) this is beyond my automotive knowledge.
-
A clutch kit has everything.. off the shelf item at most parts stores.
-
Pedals are where you are going to get into a bit of conversion..
Check my CJ6 build thread.. I have parts lists and OE pedals etc..

Dumb question... What "size"? LoL

Whatever the stock setup is. 258/T18 factory option in 73

Took me 10x longer than it should have, but got the tranny done.

Very shiny. Hot tanked?
